Billy Hundreds Seafood Restaurant and Tapas Bar in Southend-on-Sea

I'd ordered Fish & Chips with a salad. I ate I think 2 mouthfuls and noticed in tge middle of tge fish what looked like uncooked batter, yellowish in colour. It completely put me of off the meal. I took the plate to the counter and asked "what is that, is it uncooked batter". "No I was told, it's Tumeric, we put Tumeric on our fish. "Tumeric, I repeated on fish & chips", that's completely put me off I said". At this point I was told "Well everybody else likes it", "Not in the slightest, I said", and then she went on to say, "we've always put Turmeric on our fish & chips". I wasn't offered an alternative or a fresh meal, equally Tumeric was not listed as an ingredient and I confess I wasn't looking for it in fish & chips. Also, despite handing back a virtually untouched meal, the women was actually offensive when she was overly polite and said, thank you, have a lovely evening and goodbye! It absolutely came across as being really sarcastic. I walked away feeling like I was just a pain to them, the service was awful, dreadful customer service I actually left hungry and paid £19 for the experience!

We all ate various fish tapas dishes. The Bang Bang Hake was the pick of the bunch. Outstanding!!

Wow! Had a wonderful selection of fish tapas. All was fresh and beautifully prepared. Not cheap but definitely value for money. Can't wait to try the meat tapas and their breakfast next!

What a gem this place is. I was staying at the Premier Inn for work and originally planned to eat in the hotel. But their restaurant was closed so I came here, and I'm so glad I did! Next time I stay at the Premier Inn I'm definitely eating here again! I love the fact that it's properly ON the beach. It's rustic and authentic and the food was delicious. Best atmosphere and best food in Southend!

Came here for breakfast. The menu has the usual classic dishes. I had the Eggs Benedict. Fabulous. Very tasty. Scrummy poached eggs with soft with runny yolks, sat on carved ham and a delicious toasted muffin, topped with creamy tasting hollandaise sauce. My friend had a sausage sandwich and a glass of red wine. I washed mine down with a couple of Bloody Marys. Perfect start to my day. Fabulous service and vibe, fabulous food, fabulous drinks! Lunch and Tapas are served daily and there is a special Monday evening menu. I imagine this place gets busy so probably best to boook. Will be back.

I do like this place, sitting outside on the beach tables, food is really nice and so are the staff. Update! If you're thinking of going for paella night, do it! Really good! 😋 Very enjoyable evening.

Took my wife for lunch for her birthday on the 11th As usual it was very busy, so we had sit outside. But, the sun was out and it was very warm so she ordered a sangria. Not many places where you have a table on the beach and can eat in the warm sun, whilst drinking sangria in October! Service was nice and prompt and the food as always top notch. Highly recommended.

Absolutely excellent restaurant. Food, location, staff and value for money all first class. Lovely family lunch for 6 people and we all loved it!

My husband and I had a great time here. Food and drink ( the Alberino white wine was lovely) were amazing. Everything is cooked to order, my husband had mussels, squid & scallops & churrros with chocolate sauce. I had whitebait (the best I’ve had for a long time just very lightly dusted) Cajun chicken and the hake - delicious. The atmosphere & staff are lovely and as it was a Saturday night there was a fabulous fireworks display that we watched from our table (September 28th to November 26th) I would definitely recommend this restaurant and we will be back soon.

Had lunch here this week. I'm not normally a fan of tapas as served up in this country, but I was tempted by the fish menu and wasn't disappointed. I particularly liked the soft shell crab and the baby squid, both dished essy to get wrong. but not here. Although the place has excellent seas views, the weather was not kind during our visit, but the food and service more than made up. We'll be back for one of their "bottomless mussels" nights. If we can get a table.

This place is amazing, a real gem. The location is perfect, the food is incredible and the staff are all so welcoming and polite. I couldn't recommend billy hundreds enough. By far the best tapas restaurant in the town.

I've eaten here a few times and it never disappoints. Lovely location on the beach, great atmosphere, the staff are brilliant and the food is amazing.

So we have visited a few times , this time with the family.The food and service were tip top I cannot praise it enough ! Make sure you have the bang bang hake and the soft shell crab although it was all delicious and great value

As great as this place is for breakfast..(& it is)..I think Monday nights paella night is better! With great surroundings right on the beach & great food what else fo you need? = sangria..& cocktails!! Yep, sorted!

Found an amazing hidden gem... I have been to some top fish restaurants, I have to say Billy Hundreds was 100% the best. Go there or miss out people, thouroghly recommend 👌

Been here a couple of times when visiting friends. The atmosphere is relaxed and the music is chilled. I love fish and all seafood and would enjoy anything on the menu. My partner is the opposite but as all the dishes are tapas size there was a good choice for him too. The place is unique and literally sits on the beach so you get a great view of the sea and the pier although you are at least half a mile away from the pier. We will definitely return on our next visit to Southend.

Fantastic good right on the beach

We were able to get a table for lunch, without a reservation for two/three of us. Great service, imaginative food and drinks menu, delicious tapas style food, with generous portions. Loved it, possibly even better because weather was stunning.

The service is the worst I ever experienced. The staff is not trained at all. They move from a table to another without actually doing anything. 3-4 trips to one table to bring a drink and a dessert. 30 minutes to bring a lousy glass of juice. Wouldn't come back even if they paid me.

First time at Billy Hundreds - was slightly taken aback by the the set up but that was changed as soon as we set down - the vibe and service was brilliant and the food was superb !!!

This is without doubt the best beach restaurant in England . The food is absolutely delicious every single thing was perfect . The staff are friendly and fun they seem to Know what you need before you do . They make you feel welcome in a laid back chilled way and even made a drink based on our loose description of what we liked go there and see I can’t see how you could find a better place on a beach in England

We love Billy Hundreds and chose to come here for our anniversary meal. The weather was great, which always helps when visiting this beach restaurant. The menu has been changed slightly since our last visit and our tastebuds were firing up as we read the tapas choices. There can’t be many Southend venues offering such tasty food. Order the bread, but try to save it until you’ve eaten the tapas and then use it to mop up the remaining sauces - that’s what it’s there for! We had a great time and always love visiting Billy Hundreds. Well done!

Omg what a gem!! Nice atmosphere music on the seaside, smiley service! Had glass of wine and whitebait that was fresh crisp and cooked nicely with homemade tartare. Patatas aioli could have had a bit more garlic flavour but they were lovely next time I'll definitely try the patatas bravas. Awesome place very fresh local fish

Ved første øjekast fremstår restauranten dog ikke som noget særligt. Udefra er der ikke meget, der fanger øjet, og interiøret inde stemmer desværre overens med det første indtryk. Det enkle og lidt upåfaldende indre matcher ikke den høje kvalitet af maden, som vi blev præsenteret for. Selvom portionerne ikke var de største, var smagen til gengæld stor. De forskellige fiske-tapasretter, vi smagte, var nøje sammensat og tilberedt med omhu. Selvom maden var af høj kvalitet, ville en opgradering af interiøret og portionernes størrelse kunne løfte den samlede oplevelse til et endnu højere niveau. Significant improvement in food quality and flavours over the last year. Garlic prawns and monkfish tacos standout. Location is perfect and perception of eating in another country. Great vibe and service.

Billy Hundreds is a much loved restaurant on the seafront in Southend-on-Sea, well known to all of us who live here. It’s on a stretch of beach not well visited by tourists, and that’s one of the reasons we love it so much. That, the five-star food, it’s rustic charm, unapologetic ‘take us as you find us’ atmosphere, the laid back, cool vibe, great music and lovely, lovely staff. I cannot praise this venue highly enough.

Delicious food and friendly service but we visited at the same time as a very large and very loud party of men, so didn't stay as long as we would have, as we could not hear each other speaking at all. Obviously not the restaurant's fault, but it meant we did not bother with dessert or more drinks, we were just unlucky in our timing.

Amazing Tapas restaurant. Gorgeous daily specials, especially the crab and prawn dishes. Great cocktails, atmosphere and service. Our go to place for birthdays and occasions. Always a warm welcome.

I recently visited this charming Spanish tapas and fish restaurant in Southend-on-Sea, and it was an unforgettable experience. It was my first time in the area, and I was especially excited to try the food here. From the moment we arrived, the staff were amazing, particularly a young lady named Lois. She was incredibly friendly and super helpful, going above and beyond to accommodate us despite not having a booking. Lois showcased excellent customer service skills, patiently answering my numerous questions and ensuring we felt welcome throughout our visit. The restaurant itself is very cozy and authentic, with lovely decorations that strike a perfect balance between simplicity and attention to details. Sitting outside and overlooking the sea was really nice; we thoroughly enjoyed the weather and the brilliant atmosphere. The food was nothing short of spectacular—very fresh and presented beautifully. The dishes were simple yet sophisticated, reflecting the high quality and originality of the cuisine. My favourite were the Bang Bang Hale and the Sof Shell Crab. The prices were reasonable given the quality of the food. The highlight was when the owner himself came to present the food, adding a personal touch to the dining experience. We enjoyed multiple dishes, each one more delightful than the last, and the Eton mess dessert was simply superb. We had a wonderful time and I will definitely be coming back. Highly recommended!

The Tapes was excellent, went with a friend for lunch, not every table was taken but most were. If you want to go here, I can highly recommend the place, but you do need to book. We had a selection of 4 dishes, fresh tasty. Well, it's worth a visit.

I’ve been here before for their paella night and really enjoyed it. Went this evening with four friends and the experience was very different. Our friends were seated when we arrived. The booking was for five. The table they were sat at was for four and there was a small table for two push up against it. The young waitress said that the table for two was needed back by 7pm. We explained that we had booked for five. She went away and checked and must have discovered she had seated my friends at the wrong table. She said we could move to the table at the back which must have been our table. No problem, we moved and were happy with that. Every interaction with this waitress after that was bizarre. No please, no thank you etc. no one ever came back to ask if we wanted more drinks. Took ages to get anyone’s attention for 1 beer. We asked her for our bill. Nothing came. Asked the young lad and the bill came in minutes. When we paid, she just walked off. No “thanks guys” or “have a nice evening”. Just really odd and unfriendly. We’re all nice people and didn’t make anything of the initial mistake. Someone should have a word with her as we won’t be back. Food was ok however.

Oh My Lord! I literally can’t stop raving about this place. What a fantastic menu bursting with flavours, presented expertly and clearly cooked with care and attention. I can’t remember when I last saw such appetising food. First class tapas, generous portions and something for everyone. The Bang Bang Hake was so delicious. Now the Churros!! Oh yes, hot fluffy dough balls covered in cinnamon sugar with a chocolate dip.. The best I’ve tasted. I had a piping hot latte coffee to accompany them. My pet hate is luke warm coffee Seriously good food, a little hidden gem along the seafront, literally right on the beach, I can’t wait to come back when the sun is shining, bring friends for a great experience.

Arrived and waited to be served and two other couples arrived after us and seemed to be known to staff so got served while we still waited lots of chat with what seemed to be regulars got to the point where was getting enjoyed left and enjoyed I meal in the half way house

Best Tapas I have had in the UK. Lovely location, service was great and the food was delicious and generous too. In other Tapas restaurants I've felt that the portions are small but Billy Hundreds was different! Huge prawns, potatoes piled high and smothered in Aioli and delicious vegetarian options too like the chickpeas and mushroom dishes. Sadly we are not local but should we be back in Southend this will be one of the first places we go back to. Thanks for a great meal.

I have to say this is one of the best seafood meals i have ever had. We live in Moraira,Spain so there are some great seafood restaurants but this is better. And even Verdeco wine which is local to where we are plus great local ale which is the one thing I miss.

Fun and cozy place. Have been a couple times. Definitely book, and well in advance! Food is delicious and there is a wide drinks menu, including some local gins and beers. Suitable for kids--provided they like fish.

We had the "all you can eat mussels". 3 different sauces available. I especially liked the Asian one - a bit like Thai curry but not as hot. Wonderful atmosphere and excellent service as always

Lovely menu. Lots of history. Staff were really nice and the food was excellent. Prices were very good and all this in a good location overlooking the sea. You will need to pre book as it’s small but well worth the visit. Will definitely go back when in the area. Everyone was happy and in high spirits

I used to work for a Spanish Bank and be in Spain a lot and have tapas. I can definitely say this is still the best Tapas I’ve ever had!!! The staff are friendly and very helpful and seem soo cheerful!! I would recommend this as the number place in Southend to eat!!

Billy Hundreds is a massive favourite of ours. Food amazing, atmosphere great and staff lovely. If you visit Southend, Billy Hundreds is a must.

Such an idyllic spot eat in or out the views are amazing. Great service great staff and great food. Selection of Tapas and freshly caught fish. You will have to book in the summer as they get extremely busy.

Had lunch today with the wife for the first time. Food was very fresh and tasted lovely, especially the soft shelled crab and the monkfish taco. Would've ordered more if we had more time to spare. Only shame was we came to try the Sardines amd Oysters but were unavailable.

My previous visit was a couple of years ago where the place had a more chilled out feel with cushions and nicnacs. This time it was a bit basic feeling with plastic chairs. The food and drink were good, tasty and in decent portions, with a friendly and good service. I felt that the cost was too much though and we won’t be returning in a rush.

Last weekend when woke Monday visited here for a quick freshen up and a couple of first morning drinks A takeaway cup of tea and coffee £5.00 a little abit more expensive than we would typically pay but did freshen up in the facilties. Would come and back to order food in better circumstances Lovely calm environment on the sea front food looked beautiful presented to a high quality. Amazing seafood tapas!! Soooo good!!

We had a table of four. Sadly, all of us got very sick after the dinner. High suspicion of unclean food and preparation. All dishes are small but expensive.

Second time here, had the best Moules Mariniere and crisp frites,I have ever had. Friendly relaxed atmosphere in a casual beach kiosk, great cooking. Sea views and most important dog friendly.Recommended.

I absolutely cannot speak more highly of this restaurant - we visited following a trip to Southend Sealife centre which is a 10 min walk away from Billy Hundreds. We brought our just two year old daughter who was welcomed and accommodated by a very friendly waitress - the service was great and the food absolutely outstanding! Best authentic tapas I have had in England, some dishes with an Asian twist which were executed perfectly - one of the best meals I have had in a long while and in such a lovely cosy environment. If you’re planning a visit get that booking in!
