Hen & Hops in Newcastle upon Tyne

As a Newcastle first timer and foodie, I did a bit of research on where to go for some good food in Newcastle for the weekend. Hen & Hops popped up after a short search. SO glad we came here, buffalo wings were chunky and meaty, chicken tenders were perfectly cooked and tasty, the truffle fries were bloody delicious, BBQ beans also nice and Smokey, onion rings crispy and not too oily and hash bites soo moreish. 10/10 would recommend and would go again. Owners and staff were super friendly and passionate and loved that they did their own rubs and marinades. Nice selection of craft beers too. We ordered loads of food and we thought overall price was very reasonable! Thanks for having us!!

Excellent place for an evening meal. Food and service was fantastic-we were made to feel really welcome. It was our first visit and we’ll try to return soon. Great selection of lesser known beers and chicken done in a really interesting variety of ways. Great for wings.

Just been to Hen n Hops for the first time for Valentines and loved it! Massive menu, which was surprising, and we ordered a load as we thought the wings would be small.... but they were mahoosive! We definitely ordered too much, but we tried to smash it. Next time we visit, which will be soon, we'll order less and check out the dessert menu as well. Really chuffed, we picked here for Valentines, and a reservation is highly recommended as the place isn't massive. Shout to Kalum the server, sound lad.

Restaurant in the heart of the city. Few tables to sit so I recommend booking. We wanted to try the very spicy wing, and it's really an experience that I don't recommend! Even though I'm used to spicy food, it was just too much. However, the idea is also nice in how it is served. In general the food is good, one flaw is the lack of draft beer. Average price

One of my favourite places in Newcastle upon Tyne. This place is always packed and hence a reservation online on the day before your visit is highly recommended! The wings are delicious and they have a nice deal on Wednesday and Fridays ! Their beer selection is also decent. The place is a tad bit tiny, but the food makes up for it. The staff are amazing and are very friendly. I highly recommend this place for their lovely chicken wings (various flavours !) and awesome service.

Was there last night 6 of us and had the keg of wings 60 wings and chips curry and chicken gravy. It not a place I would usually choose but a few wanted to try it alls I can say is wow the flavours were fantastic and next time I'm in Newcastle I will definitely be returning great food cosy place and fast and the young woman that was on is a credit to your business. It was the 22/10 so you know what young girl to give a pay rise hahahab xx

Our daughter booked this for my birthday so we could eat before going to a gig at The Stand, across the road. Booking is essential, as it's only small & walk-ins were being turned away. Staff were brilliant, as was the food, craft beer (cans) & atmosphere. Great 1st visit & would definitely return. Keep up the great work!

food was awful, properly dry and tasted so boring even with sauces, ordered the grilla trilla (i think thats what it was) and some sauces and had to leave half, do have to say the onion rings were class but the chicken appauling the owner will probably reply to this asking why we didnt bring it up on the day, thats because you couldnt change the cooking on the day, owner will probably reply with a sly dig because thats what they do with negative reviews staff were lovely and caring, the joint is small but cool, but the food was shocking, id say i would prefer a kfc but the owner would make another dig.

Went couple of weeks ago for wing Wednesday and was blown away so much choice and flavours to die for. The staff were friendly helpful and gave good recommendations for wing flavours will 100% be returning getting that rewards card stamped

My mouth is watering just thinking of the place! The wings are absolutely lush! Everything has so much flavour. Honey sriracha 10/10 😙👌🏼 I’ve been a few times on Fridays (for the £5 wing deal) unfortunately got turned away once because the place is so popular and small, I’d recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment. Best chicken wings in the North East, crispy skin, succulent chicken, lovely sauces, great price, nice people.

We ate here again tonight as we do often when we’re visiting Newcastle. Fabulous saracha honey wings and ‘oot and aboot’ loaded chips…..to die for! Huge portion and so very very good. A gorgeous can of Blue Moon beer served with an orange slice too. This place really is the best, if you haven’t tried it already then you really must try it asap. Ali and Lee in the kitchen have made it the perfect double act with Callum and friend serving out front. This is a must when visiting the Toon.

We came here by chance for a quiet dinner, the place is small and welcoming, the atmosphere inside is pleasant with good background music. We ordered chicken wings and a cesar salad which satisfied us greatly, the wings in particular were an explosion of flavour. Lastly, the friendliness and helpfulness of the owner were exceptional, always kind and welcoming to us. It's a small place but it deserves all these 5 stars. If we return to Newcastle we will definitely stop by

Absolutely delicious. We shared a platter and got extra dips and the staff member was really accommodating. Loved the BBQ beans. Can you get a beer or two on tap?!!

Some of the best wings I’ve ever had, loads of flavours to choose from. Service was great, food was great and staff great. Couldn’t have asked for more. Highly recommended, booking a table is essential as more than 10 people were turned away while we were there. Will definitely be back as more on the menu I want to try.

Lovely little place I visited with my girlfriend on a Friday night and had a nice meal. We both had chicken tenders. I recommend adding a rub because the plain ones were very dull. The 'Italian Job' rub was great, but I have had much better tenders elsewhere. The place is best known for the wings so if they're your thing then I highly recommend here. The mini hash browns were nicely seasoned and the poutine fries were also delicious and big portions too. The staff were a delight and the venue is cosy. Not a very large drinks selection due to the size of the place

Visited here with my son for the first time on a Sunday lunch time. We were made to feel really welcome the moment we stepped through the door. The food was exceptional, wings were on point, dirty fries were amazing and the spicy gravy I could take a bath in. Keep up the good work. I’ll definitely be visiting again.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Not often we give 5* but this place is definitely worth it. We did a Google search and this one came up and sounded very good, but when we got there, they were fully booked. However, the lady said there would be a table in about 10 mins and we are very pleased they were able to fit us in. It's a small place, and clearly very popular, it's got a really good buzz about it and the 2 waitresses were very friendly. The food was fantastic! We both had burgers and they were delicious, awesome in my husband's word and well worth the 7 hour drive we had done. We upgraded the fries to the dirty fries and they came with cheese and chicken gravy. The gravy is the best we have ever had, any my husband makes good gravy!! Husband had 2 gluten free beers, but he didn't like them, but that didn't put us off trying to get booked in another night, but they were fully booked in the evening. Highly recommend this place

Food was delicious good portion sizes well priced service was good and friendly. Visited on Sunday lunchtime would recommend booking a table as it is quite small and fairly busy we got lucky and got the one table that wasn't reserved. Will definitely visit again

Went In here for my daughters graduation meal wow what a beautiful little place greeted by really friendly staff made us feel really welcome lovely nice smile very polite and the food omg haven't tasted anything like it amazing flavour some and funny querky names like oot and aboot chips smothered in a gravy that tasted out of this world and chicken wings so delicious we got pretty please with a cherry on top and old faithful my son had a saucy bird chicken burger to whitch he said dad this is better than McDonald's coming from my boy that is a huge compliment to the chef believe me and the onion rings and coleslaw wer something ells we will definitely be back 😋

I came here with a mate to try something new and it really was an experience that you don't see on the high street every day! We loved it, the quality was great and we had plenty to go at! The restaurant itself was cosy, too! I think next time we'll try the wings as that seems to be big on the reviews!

Terrible service horrible witch woman, wouldn't let us in even though we booked a table, it was full and noisy the space is way too small, I would strongly recommend you avoid this establishment and go elsewhere eg.. chicken coop / roost as it is known now

This is one of the best restaurants in Newcastle. All the staff are wonderful, especially Allie. The tenders are perfectly cooked and seasoned, the wings are divine and the sauces are sent from heaven (especially Lee’s). The ranch is perfection. I’ve recommended this place to all my friends- it’s DELICIOUS and affordable, the music and atmosphere is brilliant. I highly recommend this place- but make sure to book before hand!

This place is definitely a regular visit whenever taking a trip to Newcastle with a group of friends. The restaurant is small but the atmosphere is very wholesome and friendly. The service is professional, and they make you feel like you're wanted there. The food is top tier at a very reasonable price, with plenty of wing options with great sides that are worth trying.

Met up with some friends for lunch on a Saturday. I'm not usually a fan of wings but this place is different level. Plump chicken wings with amazing flavours. Absolutely top notch.

Went in a group and ordered a lot of food! The staff were really lovely as soon as we walked in. The place was busy and I'm so glad we booked as people were getting turned away at the door. The food was hot when it came and tasty, we all enjoyed everything we had. We spent a lot of money but I don't think the prices are particularly high, we just wanted to try a lot of things. Would definitely revisit here!

Been wanting to try this place for ages and finally got a chance last week. We got the Garlic Buffalo, Sesh Whan and Sriracha Homey wings. We also got some of the Arriba Arriva and Truffle loaded fries. Everything was top notch. I think Shark Bar has got some stiff wing competition. I honestly think if this place moved location to a bigger venue it would do massive business. Hen and Hops is a must try for sure.

Delicious food, i had garlic chicken wings and they were perfect. They had a bit of a kick, just how I like them. I work on a nearby bar and hear lots of customers talk about how delicious their food is at hen and hops, and the staff give excellent service

Nice cosy atmosphere. We came on Wing Wednesday when they have 10 wings for £5 so it was great value (obviously we had to get 40 wings) we didn't manage to finish them all so we took the rest home for tea. The wings and the sides were delicious 🤤 definitely will be back!

Couldnt finish it, had no seasoning on either of our tenders. the chips were very mid. Tenders were shocking, basically birds eye. Couldnt taste any seasoning on anything. The wings were the only saving grace. Music was good and staff are absolutely lovely ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for them. Oh and the ranch tasted like mayonnaise left on a windowsill on a hot day I miss wingstop right now

Booked a table for two yesterday Great little place food was amazing and plenty of it. Very reasonably priced too. Will deffo be back. Deffinatly recommend it.

Heard a lot of good things about this place before we went, and it lived up to expectations, burgers trumps the big dogs (popeyes ,slim chickens, kfc ) lots of good choices. Very friendly hard working staff. The place is a little small but has a homely sort of feel to it. Few small criticisms, but by no means hinders the experience, menu is very cluttered and source options are almost hidden. Drinks are expensive. What shocked me was schofferhofer at £7 this is a £2.50 a can even at Fenwicks. Could do with some draft options, even on the pop as large drink would be nice, also £2.50 for a 330ml can. I'm sure if I asked I could of had more napkins but these are certainly needed with the winds. 100% be back as flavours and food price was good. Looking forward to see this place grow.

Dropped in for the first time today, whilst passing by down High Bridge. Only a few in, but it was nice and warm inside. Background music at a good volume and set a good vibe. I ordered the King Naga Burger 🍔 it should come with a government health warning ⚠️ 😅 I went through the 3 stages 🌶🌶🌶... Hiccoughs, watering eyes, and a runny nose 👃 It was bloody delish 😋 😍 Nice young lad serving, with a bit of banter. As Arnie would say... "I'll be back"! Had a 💍of 🔥 the next day 🥵

We went here for the first time today and the food was amazing. We got three different types of chicken wings, onion rings, halloumi and this week's special of mac and cheese bites (hopefully they put it on the main menu as they were so moreish). Staff were very friendly and the lady was so helpful, made us feel so welcome. Portion sizes were huge so took most of it home as takeaway. Would highly recommend and we'll definitely be going again.

Not the best wings in the toon, but I would say they are 2nd. The wings have much more options, but could done with being asked how cooked you would like wings. Chicken was cooked to almost perfection, however, skin wasn’t crisp, which was personal preference. Beer cost £15 for 2 cans. Staff are lovely.

My first visit to Hens & Hops today with my husband and daughters. Been wanting to visit for ages as heard how good the food is. Thoroughly enjoyed the chicken wings and chips. It's not often I find somewhere where there is something everyone in the family enjoys. Lovely friendly staff, food is amazing, good atmosphere and some of my favourite tunes. 😋 highly recommend and will definately be back x Elaine x

Came here on Saturday as part of restaurant week. The food was fantastic, and I’m not wing lover. We upgraded our fries and was really surprised with the portion size. They tasted amazing. As I’m not a fan of hot food, I asked if they could replace the hot sauce in the Nashville burger with something else and it was incredibly tasty! The service was great too, the nice waiter encouraged me to keep going with dry Jan, when I was about to give in and both waiters offered great recommendations!

Amazing chicken restaurant for all things wings. Visited to take advantage of their amazing 50p wing deal. Hen & Hops offer an amazing range of flavours and sauces, together with lovely sides. Wing sauces are also available as dips, in generous portions. The homemade ranch in particular is a standout. The wings themselves are huge and are cooked to perfection. Particularly recommend the habanero banana for a sauce option, and the Italian inspired paprika and parmesan rub for a drier option (which can then be dipped in a sauce of your choice!) Highly recommend booking in advance as it is only small, but this creates an intimate atmosphere with great service. Staff are friendly and helpful.

We had a team night out at Hen and Hops last Friday and it was a super amazing experience. Everyone loves the wings! My favourite is the honey one - it's a must-try as you don't often find such flavour elsewhere. My colleagues had burgers said these are the best burger they've ever had. Attention - if you are not ready for the death wing yet, suggest you try the death chips first. Not as starter though:) Merry Christmas!

Me and my partner frequent here every other month, best chicken wings in Newcastle by far! Garlic buffalo and the bbq wings are absolutely berserk. Fiver for 10 wings on Wednesday can't be beaten. Staff are awesome, shame you guys don't have a bigger place otherwise I'd pop in more often, however for the sake of my waistline, this is probably for the best! ☺

A little under whelming. Wings were lovely but £3.95 for seasoned chips? They were literally just frozen chips with salt & pepper on they they were dry and bland. The chicken burger was a plain bland pale piece of grilled chicken. Small and boring. Strange atmosphere not somewhere i'd want to visit again unfortunately.

Great food, great service stopped in just me and my girlfriend and tried some different wings top quality food. Probably not a good idea to drive 5 hours back to Essex after trying the hottest wing they offer. Toilet paying for it now. Could be a bigger place but for what it is spot on 👏🏾

Want the best chicken wings, here you are, serving from mild flavours up to hot flavours that all will enjoy, probably the best I've had, staff we're great however if you want a table best book in advance.

Amazing place. A true gem in the amazing food city of Newcastle. My wife is gluten free and the staff always look after her and shes always well informed of what she can and cant order. Amazing independent restaurant. Amazing owners and staff, always friendly and welcoming and the menu has so much to choose from . Will be back for more .

Service was worse, waiting time was super high and the waiter was angry somehow!

Had heard great things about hen and hops from a colleague so thought I would try. The wings and the selection of sauces were great. Especially being able to take some of these home. My friend had the alreet hen burger and it was more burger than hen. The sides were good but not great with "seasoned" mini hash browns i was expecting more than just what tasted like a bit of salt and pepper. Excellent potential and just a few tweaks could be excellent. Would consider going back to try more varieties of the wings. But i feel there are other places that do what they do better in the area.
