I recently dined at Zula Restaurant and was thoroughly impressed by my experience. The vegan food was absolutely delicious, showcasing a variety of flavors and creative presentations that made for a delightful meal. The atmosphere of the restaurant was equally remarkable, providing a warm and inviting setting that enhanced the overall dining experience. In addition to the fantastic food and ambiance, the service was lovely. The staff were attentive and friendly, making sure that all my needs were met throughout the evening. Their professionalism and warmth added to the positive vibe of the restaurant. Overall, I highly recommend Zula Restaurant to anyone seeking a memorable dining experience. Whether you're a vegan or simply looking to enjoy some great food in a beautiful setting, Zula is definitely worth a visit.

"I had an incredible experience at Zula Restaurant in Newcastle! As a Habesha (Eritrean and Ethiopian) restaurant, it truly delivers authentic flavors that transport you straight to the Horn of Africa. The service was outstanding—warm, friendly, and attentive. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, perfect for enjoying traditional dishes. The food was absolutely delicious! The injera was soft and perfectly fermented, pairing beautifully with the rich and flavorful stews. The tibs had just the right balance of seasoning and texture, and the shiro was smooth and full of flavor. I also had Shikla, which was an absolute delight—well-seasoned, juicy, and cooked to perfection! A special thanks to the staff for their amazing hospitality. I highly recommend Zula Restaurant to anyone looking for an authentic Eritrean and Ethiopian dining experience in Newcastle!"

First visit here, went with friends who had been before. Entry up the stairs into a cost room, wasn’t sure what type of food to expect but I was open to trying different cuisine and new flavour experience. We ordered a vegetarian platter for four. What arrived was a large platter with a huge number of various dips along with a platter of a bread I can’t spell, used to scoop the food. Underneath the dips was another one of these very light large breads. The food was fantastic, utterly bursting with flavour. Staff were very friendly too and we chatted about the food. I’d advise everyone to give something new a go and try this place out. Will certainly be back.

After recommendations from a foodie group I follow, we really wanted to try some Eritrean/Ethiopian cuisine and visited Zula Restaurant Newcastle. It was honestly one of the best meals I've had and I would 100 percent recommend this place to anyone! The place doesn't look much from the outside and you could easily bypass it but once you get inside, it's lovely, a real hidden gem! The staff were very friendly and accommodating from the moment we arrived. They will adapt the spiciness of dishes to suit you. We opted for the meat and veg combo (usually for 4 people) but they had no problem reducing the amount to accommodate 2 people instead as we really wanted to try a mix of dishes. You can choose any 5 vegetable dishes and you also have 3 set meat dishes. (For anyone who is vegetarian or vegan, they have platters to accommodate too with plenty of options!) The platters are also served with injera bread which as you can see they provide plenty of (these are the rolls and also what covers the bottom of the platter). The platter was served with a traditional woven lid covering it and the presentation was absolutely phenomenal. We couldn't believe how amazing this platter looked and how generous they were with the portions! Everything on the platter was delicious. Full of flavour and they really know how to use their spices. We were just gutted we couldn't finish it all as it was super filling! You could easily have a third person share this and you would still be full! We had our food accompanied by a couple of drinks each, I had a homemade honey wine (which I highly recommend trying) and a mango juice and the other person I went with had a guava and a mango juice. After our food, they served us some traditional tea on the house, served in a strainer to share. Full of flavour once again using different fruits and spices. Total bill for 2 people: the meat and veg combo for 2, the tea and 4 drinks came to £31 exactly. Excellent value for money. We will be back again soon. Thank you for a lovely experience!

Staying in a hotel nearby for work. I Saw Zula on google and after just coming back from Tanzania, I wanted to go experience some more African culture and food. This place was so friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere was really cool and authentic. The food was so flavourful and really filling. The price was more than reasonable. Really enjoyed my visit. Highly recommend

We chose this restaurant because of the many positive reviews. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. It appears to be a meeting place for the Eritrean community. We were the only restaurant guests. Communication with the waitress was only possible to a limited extent. She seemed rather uninterested. It took a very long time for the food to be served. We ordered two meat dishes, one with spinach. The meat was tough and didn't taste good, and the spinach was completely missing. The other dish tasted okay, but was so spicy that I stopped eating after a short while. Overall, the visit to the restaurant was very disappointing and I don't understand how all the great reviews came about.

My first experience of Ethiopian food (visited 05/07/24). The food is very tasty and the restaurant is extremely underrated. The whole restaurant was essentially empty. The potions were huge and of great value. As a group of four, we struggled to finish the sharer plate (probably enough for 5+). Think it cost ~£12 each including drinks. The waitress was very attentive and friendly. The only downside was that the waitress didn't understand English very well which made it difficult to communicate that I had a minor nut allergy, although the food seemed nut free. I plan to go again and have recommended it to friends.

This is really confusing. This place used to be called mosab which we visited exactly a year ago for my sins birthday. Mosab are now in the middle of a move to different premises elsewhere in newcastle. The place is now called zula although photos (menus etc) and reviews seem to be mostly about mosab. Anyway, we (2 adults and 15/17 Yr old) returned this year for my son's birthday. We booked for 8pm on a Friday night and we're stunned we were the only people in there (considering it closes at 10). 2 other parties (of 2) came in so 8 in total(which is why I marked down on atmosphere) . We placed our order which was the meat sharing platter for dad/son and veg sharing platter for mum/daughter. Our order took over an hour to arrive (which is why I marked down on service). When the food came it was equally as good as the same dishes last year although, again, way too much food. Surely a restaurant can't survive on only 8 customers on a Friday night although I do hope they prove me wrong. Also as this cuisine is new to newcastle, photos of each of the items on the menu would be a good idea

We gave this a try because of the vegan options. We had a takeaway therefore I cannot comment on service or the ambiance of the establishment. One of my family is vegan and the vegan dishes were nice although nothing spectacular. The meat dishes were poor, the meat was tough and the sauces bland. The injeras are tasteless and and nothing to the meal. They look like grey tripe and has a similar texture. I do not know what tripe tastes like, as I don't like the look of it but it cannot be worse than an injera. In short a major disappointment.

First time trying East African cuisine. I was surprised how tasty the food is. Although it looks simple but it has some interesting taste. Ordered the veg/meat combo for two and I was so full at the end. They also have some imported beers (Asmara and St George beers). Will recommend to anyone who want to try something new. It was not too expensive as well.

We had an amazing lunch, the staff were so lovely and told us all about the amazing food we were eating and how it’s prepared. We had vegan combo for 3-4 people and a meat dish which was very generous and more than enough for 5 of us. The waitress explained how to eat it with our hands and the tradition of making a bite to eat for other people on the table and giving it to them. Everything was delicious especially all the amazing vegan dishes (the spinach one and the okra one especially). I highly recommend! The coffee was delicious too.

This was a great meal! We ordered the assorted veg and meat platter for two, a cola and a honey wine as they did not have any beer in stock. All of the food was fantastic and a great introduction to Eritrean cuisine. We had complimentary tea and popcorn which was a really nice and considerate plus. I would 100% come back here to try the rest of the menu. The only negative is that as I was recommended the honey wine due to the beer being out of stock; I would have assumed a glass would have been a similar price (£3.50ish) however I was charged £6, which had I checked beforehand I would have gone for a cola. We spent £43 including a £5 tip.

We picked this restaurant for something a bit novel and it 100% delivered. We had Eritrean lager with their sharing platter for 4 and I think it might be one of the most interesting meals I’ve ever had. You don’t get cutlery, just dosa like pancakes with delicious dishes to scoop up. There was a spicy lentil dish I could’ve stayed eating all night. This unassuming restaurant tucked away behind the life centre in Newcastle delivers more than expected from its one door exterior. After trying Ethiopian food before I have struggled to find it again outside of London so wasn't I pleased when I came across Mosob and it certainly didn't leave anything to be desired. Another added bonus was the freshly squeezed orange juice - some of the most refreshing juice I've tried in the UK. This place is not to be missed.

Poor service! The whole restaurant had to wait to be attended to while they catered to a table of 8. Took 30 minutes to get a menu, and after 45 minutes of waiting for my food I decided to leave. So I cannot comment on the food. The manager begged me stay, saying the food was on its way out (but the waitress promised me that 20 minutes before). His only excuse was there was a table of 8, and that the chef could not handle the capacity. I told him to rethink being a restaurateur, because an establishment cannot survive on a table of 8 per night. He took my comment to heart, and did not charge for my drink. It was only right, considering I left the restaurant still hungry after an hour 15 minute wait. My advice, don’t come here if there are lots of people.
