We sat outside and to have coffees but after seeing the menu we switched to have salads for lunch and a glass of beer. Our salads came quickly and were excellent. Despite everywhere inside and outside being full, everyone who served us were so friendly. We cannot recommend this place highly enough. (apologies for late review)

Whilst wandering the streets of Penzance we hadn’t really planned a schedule and noticed this cafe while looking for somewhere have lunch. We asked to see a menu and liked the amount of choice available for a cafe lunch and asked for a table under the awning which they were more than accommodating. There was a sign saying there could be longer waits due to staff shortage but we were happy to wait.We ordered a macaroni cheese and a crab linguine which I asked for without chilli as I’m not very good with spice! There was a small delay which we had been warned about but the very nice cider made up for that and when the food arrived it was more than worth the wait! It was easy to tell both were fresh and homemade and so tasty! Despite being busy, we didn’t feel like we were rushed and they even recommended a taxi company for our vineyard tour afterwards! Would thoroughly recommend, thank you for making part of our honeymoon in the UK enjoyable!

Lovely meal by the harbour front. Really good selection. And well presented food. I chose a cheasy heaven burger. Really nice. Good sized burger. I could only say the cheese could be melted a little more. Other than that lovely. My wife had a ploughman's and equally delicious .

We stopped here for fish and chips after a long morning out and about and even though the food was really nice the staff need a kick up the backside. we waited over 10 minutes for our order to be taken as we were told it was table service but people were ordering at the counter as they were fed up of waiting. The two young girls who were on service were poor and need to be taught customer satisfaction and service as they do not posses any. When the food eventually arrived it was nice but the service let this place down. We wont bother returning.

All members of staff I spoke to during my visit were incredibly busy but still made time to check up on you and make you feel relaxed and welcome. Finding somewhere to take the kids for breakfast in Penzance when you haven’t been organised enough to book and during school holidays at the tail end of a pandemic is hard work but luckily we stumbled across Helly’s! There was a small queue but we were quickly seen to and asked if we minded waiting for 5 mins for a table, I’m glad we did because the food was lovely. Between us we had the half English, eggs royale and the veggie breakfast and they were absolutely perfect, service was quick and nothing was too much trouble especially when I asked to do a couple of swaps on the veggie breakfast. Oh and kids said the milkshakes were 5 stars!! We are from London but I’ll definitely be returning next time we are in Cornwall.

Value for money yes and food was good however we ordered pasties and toasties and were waiting for nearly 40 minutes. I ordered a water when our drinks order was taken and everyone in my party received their drinks except me (I was the only one who ordered water). I asked the waitress if she wouldn't mind bringing me the water I had ordered. It was a baking hot day and the restaurant was boiling inside. Then our food arrived. Again, still no water. I politely asked again: 'please could I have a glass of water.' Started to eat my meal however as I had ordered a toastie which contained a lot of cheese....I quickly became very thirsty! Another 10 minutes went by and still no water. I then went to the counter to get water and was told 'sit down we will bring it over to you.' I didn't sit down as by this point I so desperate for a drink I was going to have a sip of my partners beer and I don't drink alcohol. The server handed me a plastic cup with around 200ml of water. I gulped it down and could not finish my lunch as I was not going through all the same hassle to simply get water. So top tip....don't drink water!

Popped in for lunch with my mum and my 5 year old daughter whilst staying in Cornwall. Placed looked clean, busy and friendly - so far so good.Drinks order was good, especially the ice cream milkshake which my daughter loved! She probably has never had so much sugar. After that it went a little downhill. We ordered a pasta dish for my little girl, but it was loaded with spice (I tried it and was VERY warm). She was fighting back the tears as she tried to eat, and once I realised how hot it was I asked the lead waitress if we could have a substitute. She kindly obliged, although at this point the pitta cheese bites provided in place didn’t really fill the lunch void (though we were grateful for a quick replacement)My mother ordered a plant burger (I think) which got a thumbs up, but the accompanying chips were thick, cold and greasy. I ordered a salad, but found that it was swimming in oil. I also found a piece of meat (I am a STRICT vegetarian and eat mostly a vegan diet). I can even let these things go, but to honest the oil (or crouton) throughout had a distinct taste of meat - only to be confirmed that there was indeed meat in the meal. It looked as though the oil and crouton had been heated with meat and dropped into the salad. I was hugely disappointed, but by this point didn’t want to make a scene having already complained about my daughters dinner. In hindsight, I should have done.In summary, lovely looking venue, nice and clean, friendly service, but the food left a lot to be desired and certainly did not seem to take vegetarian requirements seriously. Maybe it’s the chef that takes that attitude, I certainly didn’t get any bad vibes from waiting staff (they were great). Equally perhaps a simple mistake. Either way, as a regular visitor to Penzance I will now avoid unless popping in for a drink.

After a few visits they continue to be spectacular! Today was the Sunday Roast which was a very generous serving and thoroughly enjoyable! Yorkshire pudding is always a "why bother" for me but theirs are awesome - light and tasty, almost like a choux pastry...Previously it's been the sausage rolls and while all are great, the one with mustard is the best by far!!!!Previously I've found the service a little slow, slow to take your orders and slow to deliver but today was OK for orders and great for food arriving at our table. To be fair, they cook many things to order but need to speed up the arrival queue and taking ones' orders somewhat!

A lovely location with great staff but the portions are so small that for the high price we felt unhappy. When offered a half breakfast for nearly seven pounds we expected more than half a sausage with the other depleted amount of items. When the lovely waitress brought out the full English we were disappointed with the quantity so when the half breakfast came out we were left in a state of hunger. If the place wants to serve half a breakfast then charge half the full English price and please fill the Full English plate. As a local we are looking for a regular breakfast place every week but alas this is not encouraging.Quality of food excellent but quantity will leave diners leaving hungry

We did not go in here for 4 years after moving to Penzance - We were put off by Wally Wallers Ice Cream Moronium and USA Chicken being either side of this place and assumed it was junk, how wrong we were! Also we were foxed by the name "deli bar", to me it's just a really good cafe for epic breakfasts (egg benedict type things, full english, healthier/vegan breakfasts too) and sunday roasts. It's expensive compared to eg Wetherspoons, but what you pay extra they pay you back with quality local food.

We popped in here for lunch as we'd stopped off in Penzance. We were originally shown the takeaway menu as we wanted to see if it was suitable for our children to eat there. Of course, that menu showed takeaway prices. We decided to eat there as we were all hungry and it was raining. We were given the sit down menu and the prices were a lot higher but we'd already ordered our drinks so felt we had to stay. Plus the lady who was serving us was obviously new. Our food took a long time to arrive and they'd forgotten the potato wedges we'd ordered. My husband heard them talking about them in the kitchen and heard them being microwaved but it still took an extra 10 minutes for them to arrive. There wasn't much apology or even money off for this. We won't visit here again if we happen to be in Penzance again.

Second trip to Cornwall in September and several return visits to Helly's. As well as the excellent breakfasts, we recommend the ploughman's lunch, eggs florentine, garlic mushrooms on toast, cheese on doorstep slices of toast, pancakes are to die for and the tastiest crab linguine I've ever had! Even had the pleasure of meeting the creator of the best sausage rolls ever. ..Julie! Plus the nicest coffee in Penzance. Staff are brilliant, very friendly & welcoming and extremely hard working in the current situation. At which point, like a previous reviewer, I'd also like to balance out a recent poor review as I was also present at the time. A couple sitting at a nearby table enjoying their coffees were joined by 2 strangers who didn't even have the courtesy to ask if they could take the seats, never mind that it is against the current Covid restrictions. Despite clear signage asking to customers wait in a queue and only enter the café when called forward, they proceeded to shout their order for 2 coffees despite being politely told their order would be taken when other customers had been served. Then a menu was demanded to look at while they were waiting. Quite rightly when the manager came out to take their order they were informed that sitting too close to an occupied table wasn't allowed. Their uncalled for petulance & rudeness to the staff member was nothing short of remarkable and their parting shot to the rest of us that we "needed to get a reality check for eating here" was met with the response it deserved. Despite that unfair review, Helly's appears to be as popular with the locals as it is with the tourists so long may it continue through these difficult times and we look forward to seeing you all when we return again next year.

Some of the best roast potatoes I’ve ever had as a former chef I’m also a little jealous of the crispy and light Yorkshire puddings. My wife loved the linguine with locally caught crab, if your not driving I highly recommend the vintage cider. Puddings and cakes are to die for, the service we received was great Sophie and the who I can only assume is the manager couldn’t have been more attentive despite the fact they were so very busy. Reference the unfavourable review that was posted on the 10th September. I was there at the cafe at the time and watched the whole event unfold. I felt that the situation was entirely caused by the two customers and I believe the cafe manager acted in a very reasonable manner. The service is good and the staff are lovely. I have always found the service to be timely and efficient and I absolutely believe that they have the best interests of the local people in mind. These are difficult times and I think we all need to be flexible and a little bit patient. It's a great place to sit and have a drink and watch the world go by.

I have been to this establishment twice recently and as a local I can honestly say that there are far better places to go. The service is exhaustingly slow and the staff seem to think next year will do! As they were unable to take my order for two coffees until their other orders had been dealt and I had to stand outside due to social distancing measures I suggested that they came to the table to take my order. The draconian manager / owner then followed me outside to inform me and my friend that we were breaking the law because we were sitting on two chairs too close to another table. I realise that certain measures need to be in place but they could at least be polite and accommodating, or at the very least, try smiling! At this point we decided that we’d find somewhere more hospitable to have our coffees. This establishment no doubt relies on tourism for the majority of its revenue as its on the harbour front, so if they are rude to customers they don’t worry because some other holidaymaker will soon take their place. However, they will miss out in the Winter months because I for one won’t be returning to be spoken to again in that manner, and I will not advise my friends to go there either. The only benefit of dining here is that there’s plenty of outdoor seating, but there are equally relaxing outdoor venues nearby such as The Boatshed and The Jubilee Pool cafe just a little walk further. As for Hellys, I think it would be better titled Hellish.

We were in a rush, so had some coffees and a quick bite to eat. The crab bisque was absolutely delicious. And the service was outstanding, they put the coffee in take away mugs to help us out. Thank you, we'll be back!

Came here for a bite to eat when visiting Penzance and was convieniently opposite the car park we found. It's a small place and we were lucky to get a seat indoors on a rainy day. Top marks to the staff for doing social distancing measures and track and trace without any awkwardness.I had a bacon brie and cranberry toastie pand my partner a traditional Cornish pasty which we both enjoyed. They were fresh and well cooked and a good size. The added extra of a lovely deli salad was fab especially the cuuried potato salad. I do like different sides rather than limp lettuce and coleslaw. Well worth a stop in if you are in the area.

The toasted sandwiches and paninis were excellent. We thought it seemed expensive but it's well worth it as the side salad is awesome and the fillings were plentiful. Coffee and hot chocolate were also great. Would definitely visit again.

We popped in to grab a quick bite to take away for Hellys. We ordered a pork, honey and mustard sausage roll and a pork, cheese and marmite sausage roll. They were immense!! The staff were friendly and chatty. I also ordered a piece of carrot cake which was so tasty. So much so we went back and ordered the same again a few days later. Would highly recommend.

I only wanted a coffee but stayed for lunch. My decaffeinated coffee was lovely and it was made fresh which is unusu7al and didn't cost a fortune like the major coffee shops. I stayed for lunch as I heard the magic word Panini. A lovely menu with plenty of choice. I thought I would treat myself and wasn't expecting a dinner plate full of salad . But it all tasted gorgeous. Lots of homemade salad and I was told the chutney was also homemade. Well worth a visit and will come again

We visit Helly's every year when on holiday in Penzance and always enjoy excellent food served by lovely staff in a great atmosphere. Breakfasts are fit for a king! So tasty, fresh ingredients & beautifully presented. Always a mouth watering choice of meals on the specials board and we will make it our mission to try some more of them on future visits. We gave in to temptation and bought some of their huge, homemade pork, cheddar & marmite sausage rolls to take away and they were so good! For a fairly small cafè they offer quite an extensive menu of food & drinks with good vegan and gluten free options too. Whatever you're looking for in Penzance be it breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks or simply coffee & cake..you will find it at Helly's. Even though these are difficult times at the moment, this wonderful little cafè is running smoothly, safely & efficiently and with the same warm, friendly welcome that brings us back year after year. Thank you Chris & everyone for looking after us so well, we will see you again soon!

Stopped off here to grab a quick bite. I had the afternoon tea, the scones are heavenly! Other members of my party had the half English and the pork sausage roll which were both superb. Portion sizes are really great! Service was fast and staff were really friendly, will definitely be returning.

Admittedly we are in an odd time with the new COVID measures but this place was slow and staff rude! We sat outside in the sun (on the main road) ordered 2 coffees and 2 breakfasts. Food came 1st coffees about 5 minutes later (odd order) i was forced to pay while half eating my breakfast as (should have paid at order but staff forgot) and were worried I would run off. Shoved the chip and pin machine at me as I was eating my bacon and when I said I would pop in and pay in a minute was told the manager had told the waitress to take it now ! Was very rude and unnecessary - you don’t force people to pay half way through eating. Told off for entering the cafe and asking for milk - need to wait around at the door with other hovering customers for someone to acknowledge you. Very slow and very poor service. Nearly £25 for 2 coffees and breakfast wish we hadn’t bothered !

Called in with some elderly family members in need of a cuppa, wow! The staff were so accommodating especially as were in the early stages of social distancing. Coffees & teas were served in good time but I went for the hot choc with marshmallows & cream.. yum yum! Lemon pimento cake was so moist too. There’s a good selection of art by local people and we decided to buy a pair, Lisa carefully wrapped them for us after explaining a little about the artists. A well presented, clean & tidy establishment which I would highly recommend for eat in or takeaway. Wish I had similar near my home !

We’ve been coming in for a few months now so tried coffee and cake, breakfasts, and lunch. It is our favourite ‘go to ‘ place. Service is great and so friendly. The chef uses the best ingredients. The menu is really varied so there’s something for everyone. I love coffee and I love this coffee. I really want to try their Sunday roast

We only wanted a snack so ordered two sausage butties and one glass of coke. When they came the bread was cut like doorsteps and the sausage inside tasted foul and had yellow and green bits in with the skin like leather. It was totally uneatable so we left 99% of it. The price of this was a staggering £12!!! The worst food ( if you could class that mess as food ) we're ever had in our life. Not fit for a dog. Avoid this rip off place at all times.

I wrote a review on Friday and I made the mistake of putting only one star instead of five stars. We couldn't fault the service, food or atmosphere. We had the Valentines Day menu which was delicious. All freshly prepared with local produce. We will definitley be going back. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Generous portions, and a great selection of comfort foods! We both had a crab meat sandwich, it was very nice. Good gluten free bread, too! I’m finding that everywhere in Cornwall has great GF options. I’m taking one point off because I specifically asked for no dairy (I’m allergic to dairy and gluten, amongst other less PITA allergies), and my sandwich arrived covered in what I though would be margarine/vegan butter. Well, it definitely wasn’t a dairy free product! Other than that, thumbs up.

Stopped here for a spot of lunch on a wet windy day looking around Penzance was met with a very warm greeting. We ordered the roast dinners and omg arguably the best roast dinner I’ve ever eaten, gravy and potatoes were amazing not to mention the Yorkshire pudding. We also had to try the home made crumble for pudding was as good as the roast, we even bought some cake to take home if you’re in Penzance and hungry this is where you want to go.

myself , one teenager and a three year old popped in today. Had two very enjoyable toasties , well presented on large white plates , with a fresh salad , pasta , dressing and crisps , the kids eat what they could , but couldn't finish it all! I did though and very tasty it was...From what my daughter said the family beside us were probably having the same based on the look of our mealsThere was a few handy toys to keep the three year old occupied. Staff helpful and friendly as always and we'll be popping back soon no doubt. We have a dinosaur to return...

I loved everything about this place. The staff were young and helpful and professional. The food was perfectly cooked (and in massive portions). The menu was everything you could want on a cold rainy weekday in mid December. This is the best place ever for brunch.

Called in as fancied something hot with it being quite cool. My partner had ham eggs and potato wedges and I had toast. Was very good and filling. Well worth the money. A bit of a wait but in my opinion, if you want freshness then the wait doesn't matter.Friendly service from the young lady behind the counter and her equally pleasant male partner.

Don't bother. Cheap and nasty tea. Croissant from a microwave. Had to request that the bloke behind the counter didn't put his fingers inside the cup he was handing me and to give me a different one holding it by the handle.

Absolutely wonderful visit. The cream tea was the best I think I’ve ever had. Warm scones, huge pot of cream and delicious jam, must be homemade. The tea was piping hot and came with an additional tea bag should you like it strong.
