Heath Sports Club in North Hertfordshire

We were just out for a drive and thought we would stop here for a sandwich or something. Turns out they have a full lunch menu which looked good. I went with Hake in a pepper and tomato sauce, my wife had a steak with blue cheese on a flatbread. I’m a big fish lover but wasn’t expecting too much from a little place in Royston ! How wrong I was, the Hake was cooked to perfection and the sauce absolutely delicious with some new potatoes this was a really nice and unexpected lunch. My wife’s steak was also brilliant apparently. This was a very hot day and we sat at an outside table with shade with a lovely view over the Heath. A hidden little gem that is well worth a visit.

We wanted lunch for 12 on the way back from a site visit with work and as I frequent here often with my dog, and this was on the way back, we stopped on a Thursday at 1.30pm. I took down all drinks and food and ordered at the till and the service was very quick and faultless. Food delicious as always. I have to say in reply a previous comment about the 'Indian' salad being told it's not spicy, one of my colleagues had it and it is 'not' spicy, but 'indian flavoured', like a 'coronation' flavour. If you don't like spicy food at all, you wouldn't order anything 'Indian flavoured' (in my opinion)! The breakfasts are amazing too. Never disappointed here. Keep up the good work all.

Following a family party get together the day before I booked for our large family to have breakfast at The Heath Cafe on Sunday 2nd June 2024. There were 31 of us in total and can only say the service we received from the point of booking to the actual breakfast was amazing. The chaos was caused by us but somehow the staff managed to create order out of the chaos and serve us all a lovely breakfast. Everyone very happy, a great team with a special thank you to Alfie and the other team members working with him that morning. Can highly recommend!

Impromptu lunch.. I ordered the Indian Summer Salad with King Prawns. I don’t like spicy food, and was assured by a staff member it wasn’t spicy, but it was! It was really lovely apart from the hotness. Sat outside with beautiful views of the Heath. Great service. Lost half a star because my salad was spicy, when I was told it wouldn’t be.. and the other half a star as the ladies toilet flushed when I was still sitting on it! Sort that out please! Other than that, a pleasant lunch.

A beautiful location and good staff. A really nice way to spend a hour having a drink. The food is nice too. This cafe could really do with an attractive makeover. The interior is very dated. It would be nice if they served food later in the afternoons at the weekends

We enjoyed a wonderful Mother's Day lunch here. The food was absolutely delicious with a super menu to choose from. The young team of service staff were friendly and helpful with a very pleasant manner. Every effort was made to make it a special event.

Came for lunch and I was dissapointed with the quality of my food. I had the open sandwich with beef brisket. Beef was on the tough side, for £12.95 I expected more. The sandwich didn't come with anything and I ordered chips which were £4.50 for a very small bowl. Dont think the food was value for money, left very underwhelmed. Not sure I would try there again.

After a lovely dog walk we stopped at the cafe for 2x hot chocolates and two icecreams for the kids. I was told the wait was only a couple of minutes. I sent the children outside to eat their icecreams while I waited inside. After a 15min wait, I asked how much longer as I wanted to make sure they hadn't forgotten my order....was told its next to be made...then after another 10mins O asked again and I was told my order was being made when it clearly wasnt...5min later I asked for a refund and left. The manager and 4 other staff kept making eye contact with me, they all knew how long myself and 3 other customers had been waiting for hot drinks but not apologied to once. One lady only wanted a black coffee and a black tea. Shocking service!

My partner is just back from the WI Christmas lunch at The Heath Cafe. The food was superb and the service faultless. Her soup and brisket of beef were delicious. She would recommend it without hesitation.

We used to love this place being regulars for breakfast or lunch. We haven’t been for a while and visited for breakfast recently. The quality of the food has definitely dropped, the bread isn’t nice at all (used to love the fresh bread previously) , the fried eggs were hard….the “fresh” orange juice is very diluted , hardly tasted of fresh orange juice. Very high prices for what it is. Disappointing visit and would prefer to go somewhere else next time ….

Nice staff and a tasty menu but they can get pretty busy (eg Sunday lunchtime) and then the service gets very slow,

Excellent lunch. Fresh ingredients well presented. Good range of menu choices. Best service we have experienced in ages. Only regret is that I didn’t ask for our waiters name so I could mention it on here so his effort could be recognised. Will definitely go back again.

Stopped of here on my way to visit my parents. As an alternative to a services breakfast! Great breakfast service was excellent. Great to hear the staff communicating with each other and letting each member of the team know what was going on as they started the shift. Great portion size, fast friendly service and reasonably priced and an amazing view whilst eating! Well worth the diversion off the main road to have food and a little walk before a long drive. Highly recommend

Ate here this morning for breakfast.. Not our first time.. I myself had smoked salmon and scrambled egg on granary bread.. Was v tasty but tiny portion! All comes on 1 piece of toast! Smoked salmon was barely there! Hubby had waffle with berries and was surprised as 1 small waffle with yog and a strawberry but up on top! Not worth it ! Staff friendly..

Because I’m fed up with coming to a place that says they are open and yet you can’t get any food I came at 14:55hrs but food service finished. My last two trips with the dogs were at about 13:30 hrs but they couldn’t take food orders as they were in a muddle. Their prices are now ridiculous and portion sizes very variable. It’s still a lovely place to walk the dogs but the cafe really needs to sort themselves out. I’m very disappointed

Dont try and have lunch on a Sunday ! Told to wait until 12:30 to order, then 12:45 then 1 O'Clock, " the rugby team must be served tirst" .They were not busy, why the long wait ? unhelpful, uncaring untrained staff. Seemed to be chaos in the Kitchen! Gave up. Been going there for 25 years never again! Lot of unhappy families . Went to McDonalds instead, at least got served!

We popped in on the off-chance today and, whilst they were very busy, we had a most enjoyable lunch. The waiting staff advised us there would be a delay in food as there were two large parties ahead of us but they kept us updated and managed our expectations well. The food was very tasty, well presented and good value for money. They even accommodated our request for a ‘doggy sausage’ cooked for our pooch. Thank you The Heath Cafe, we had a lovely lunch and your service was excellent, despite being so busy.

Never had a bad meal. Whilst the interior is a bit basic the food is exceptional. Staff great and hats of to the kitchen team as it’s been perfect every time. Well behaved dogs welcome

Popped in for the first time for a few drinks, warm welcome, staff very friendly, great location. Good selection of beer.

I went for lunch and always enjoyed eating here. It was awful yesterday a club sandwich thrown in a roll no side salad ir crisps. Had to call the waiter/waitress over to order and to pay. They have been open the whole if lockdown what the hell are they doing?

Waited 30 minutes for our ORDER to be taken, food arrived after being there for 45 minutes. Was told this was so our food can come quicker, but others around us were getting their order taken after 10 minutes of being seated. Food arrived, ordered a ‘sandwich’ and this arrived. Awful service, overpriced. Never coming here again.

Myself hubby and dog visited here (again) for breakfast last Friday! Plenty of tables undercover to choose from. I had the scrambled eggs and smoked salmon on toast, was simply delicious but thought a little skimpy on the S Salmon! Hubby had the full Heath breakfast and was delicious! Lovely young waitress served us! Highly recommend and we will be back 😁

The Heath Cafe Bar is a great place to go to on a sunny, or cloudy, day and have a coffee and a sandwich or a piece of cake. Staff are always helpful, plenty of room to sit down and the food good quality. Highly recommend.

Fabulous gluten free breakfasts. Service and COVID regulations are all good. One of my favourites places to eat.

I’ve eaten here pften and enjoy the food but it’s impossible to order Friday night food on my iPad. None of the options on the screen respond to touch inputs

We used the Friday Night Take-Away for the first time last night (19 Feb 21). The family agree that all the burgers we had were excellent and they were the best we had had in a long time. The service was also excellent, the meal was ready to be picked up exactly on time. We will definitely use again. You could not ask anything else from a take-away service.Peter Nightingale

Nice location on the edge of Royston by the heath. However we found it expensive. There are no prices displayed on the large blackboard menus. However one small plastic tub of chips was £3.50 with service from a kiosk window and seating outside. Given the takeaway atmosphere and small portion size, this was too expensive. On that basis we didn't bother to order anything more substantial.

We went for dinner last night and sampled the new winter menu which was absolutely delicious! The staff were excellent, the atmosphere was great and food superb! Particularly the chocolate and caramel bread and butter pudding!!

Dinner with special friends here last night and all enjoyed the special food and service! Spicy prawns followed by a superb chicken sausage and mushroom pie and ended with a very large Eaton Mess! Great location will be back very soon👍

Well, I was very impressed. I did email and although they answered, it had gone into my junk mail. When I mentioned I emailed about the subject, the lovely waitress/Manager said she had replied, so I apologise I said no one answered ! the staff kept me informed of how it worked and gave us 1st Class service. the food was fresh and yummy. I will be coming back and highly recommend for an informal ut lovely surrounding and food. They are COVID safe too

Wonderful view. Gorgeous breakfast. Ambient music and Lily was a wonderful friendly waitress. It was a relaxed and happy experience. The food was fantastic.

Ate here today for breakfast... Yes the cafe was packed and can honestly see why! The staff ... everyone we dealt with was very polite, and professional! We initially had to sit inside then when a table came free we were told and was lovely to sit outside in the sun. I had the Paleo breakfast and hubby the big heath! Both absolutely yummy! Only little negative is we had to wait 40 minutes for it to arrive.. We did get told at the beginning there would be a wait but didn’t really think that long! Would not put me off recommending and we will certainly be back

Felt so safe, food and service brilliant. Not been to many places recently and everything they did gave us all confidence, tables very clean, walk ways clear with arrows. Staff very knowledgable, friendly and helpful. Would definitely be going back.

Visited here the first weekend of freedom following COVID lockdown ...& it was amazing. The food was great - such high quality (halloumi sticks were delicious and HUGE). The service was quick and friendly - staff constantly checked how we were getting on and apologised for any delay (despite the fact there was none!). Very professional and will definitely eat here again!

Toby and the team at the Heath cafe have done an amazing job of reopening in this crazy time. They've planned out everything to ensure safe use of the facilities and to ensure that everyone can have a great time despite covid changing the way we need to behave. Everything from queueing systems to a great food ordering system to antibacterial wipes in the bathroom make it a great place to be able to go back to with all the family for food and drinks. Thank you for looking after us all!! So glad to have you back and setting the bar so high for all local businesses.

We visit often for all occasions. Breakfast or lunch with friends, birthday celebrations or a quick coffee after a dog walk on the beautiful surroundings. Visited today to try their special Shrove Tuesday menu and had banana and chocolate American style pancakes which were to die for! Always a 5 star for this wonderful venue.

Popped in for a coffee on a wild and windy day courtesy of Storm Ciara. Surprisingly it was busy with both individuals and parents with their children just coming off rugby training. The ladies at the bar were very efficient and the coffee was brought to the table and was an excellent brew. I could imagine this would be an excellent place for a visit in warmer weather when you could sit outside and take in the view over Therfield Heath.

Excellent gluten free selection both for lunch and for cakes! Staff seem to be on the ball about food intolerances.Reasonable prices.I had fish and chips - crispy coated fish and scrummy chunky chips - looking forward to eating there again!I have knocked off one star as dogs were allowed in the cafe which doesn't suit everyone, luckily, in this instance they were across the room from us.

We had our golf society dinner here the other day. Super menu, super food and super service. We all enjoyed our food everything was prepared fresh and tasted great. This was a really good deal super value for money. We had a private room and we were looked after really well by very friendly helpful staff. This is a great place for breakfast and lunch. They also do evenings for groups. Right on the edge of the heath. There is plenty of parking available.

After walking our dogs on the hills and through the woods, we took a table in the smaller area in the restaurant.

The Heath Cafe is one of my regulars. It's close to where I live and after a walk across Therfield Heath this is the perfect place to pop in on a sunny day and have the best fish finger sandwich with skinny fries in the area.

I visited here with several friends and my mother for her 90th birthday and the afternoon tea was fantastic. Everything was homemade including the bread rolls for the sandwiches. The cakes were delicious and different and everything was plentiful. Service was excellent and the trouble gone to to make it special was great. Highly recommend.

Visited here just for a drink and sit out on a lovely sunny day.The cage has a lovely outlook and the area is great for walking in bringing your kids.The service and drinks were fine, although I did notice the prices were in the high side for a cafe.Would come back as it's a nice location for a sit out in the sun

Can recommend the fish finger sandwich and the goats cheese and vegetables sandwich (think that's correct) - both absolutely yummy. Cakes are also really lovely - my friend and I usually buy one each and share!

Came here on Thursday lunchtime for a walk round the Heath. Got chatting to a elderly couple who had a dog like we did and the recommended here for lunch! So glad we listened! Lots of outside tables available. Both me and hubby ordered a fish finger sandwich with a portion of thick cut chips. Absolutely delicious! Proper chunk of fish in a crumb in the sandwich as was expecting birds eye fish fingers! Bread was ciabatta and so fresh! Loved it! Delicious and highly recommend!

Stopped here for breakfast before a round of golf yesterday. They have a great breakfast menu and indeed lunch menu. There is plenty of seating inside and outside if the weather is good. They have great coffee and teas. The service is always with a smile and very professional. There is plenty of parking outside, they have a fitness set up with a number of professionals on hand also they have some nice tennis courts as well. Great venue....

We visited this cafe for the first time today, and - I am afraid - the last. Our food took nearly 50 minutes to arrive, even though we were there before the lunch rush, and when it did, it was nothing special. The website talks of "handcrafted food", but I can recognise a freezer-burger and chips when I see them. Apparently my burger came with "salad" - which I guess is one name for a lettuce leaf and one slice of tomato. A fair enough burger, but way over-described and over-priced (£9.95 for burger, "salad" and about a dozen chips). My husband's ham, egg and chips was very good, he said, but again pricey at £9.95.

Living locally and I walk up the Heath every morning but we have never eaten at The Cafe Bar. So on a rainy day we decided to have Lunch there. The Food was very good. Burger with Bacon was delicious and the Chicken Bacon,Avocado Sandwich was very good. Nice piping Hot Pot of Tea. Service was pleasant and we enjoyed our Lunch looking out on the Heath. Bet it's nice on a Sunny Day sitting outside. Will definitely return to sample some more of their good food.

Eating at this bar/restaurant gives you a beautiful and interesting view of the sports fields, excellent food, extremely competitive prices and friendly, helpful service. Nothing to complain about here.

Great place to grab a bite and a cup of tea after walking the dog on the heath. Recommend the freshly made tomato soup and the great burgers.

Sometimes let down by slow service, but they never know how many people are going to turn up at any one time!

Visited the heath to have breakfast and walk the dog. We walked in to just stand there like a couple of idiots for 5 minutes before I asked the guy in the shirt (who I am guessing is the manager) if I’m standing in the right place. He just said other side and walked off. Turns out they were fully reserved for Mother’s Day and were accepting no walk ins what so ever. What a waste of a journey. Will never go back

Our new rescue lurcher has already realised that the best part of a walk on Royston Heath is definitely the cake afterwards at the cafe. Excellent cake and coffee!

Reserved a table and arrived to find the place heaving with people from various outdoor activities! In spite of the number of customers, service was efficient and the staff very friendly. We enjoyed four excellent lunches served in timely fashion. Very enjoyable experience and will definitely visit again!

Visited the cafe for drinks after playing with dog on heath. Very busy at the time as it was a lovely day for people to enjoy the sunshine. Lots of mums with babies/toddlers.

Discovered this place recently, been here twice and on both occasions received great service from friendly staff. The coffee and cakes are lovely, the cafe is warm and tables are well set out. Great for families and couples alike. Added bonus is the parking facilities. Will definitely return.

Had a lovely works Xmas lunch today.All ran smoothly, 1 vegan, 2 vegetarians , 2 nut allergies all catered for as well as us 'normal folks '.Everyone enjoyed the food.No hiccups with service for 15 people.All food hot on arrival, all well cooked.Look good,tasted good,not one moan.Good going.

The best breakfast around for miles. Excellent choice, well presented, good quality produce. Good coffee, excellent selection of cakes. Try the scotch eggs & sausage rolls, mmmm! Thanks again Toby & friendly staff.

Been quite a few times for brunch with friends and it seems to be our go to place! Really lovely food and friendly staff. Definitely recommend.

It's nice to report that my second visit here for lunch instead of breakfast produced a really enjoyable plate of food. It's when a place is trying and mostly succeeding. The decor and service suits a cafe but the food is more interesting than that. The beers are good pub quality. Overall then it's a bit confused but who cares, I'll be back.

Website and Cafe menus say breakfast served every day until 11.45am so to turn up at 11.35 and be told the kitchen stops serving at 11.30 and there is nothing they can do is very very poor service indeed. It’s rare I feel the need to leave a bad review but I cannot accept a business being operated this poorly. Get your act together. Unfortunate I can’t offer any opinion on the food for obvious reasons.

Had breakfast here, pre a round of golf. Great menu, great coffee. Very friendly staff, everything was prepared fresh and tasted delicious Plenty of parking, you can sit inside or outside weather permitting. They also have a great gym set up.

Lovely stop just coming home from a wedding on Sunday. Beautiful view of the heath, buzzing atmosphere and courteous service. Also great food, 30 quid for 2 cappuccinos 2 mains and a shared starter. Would definitely come again!

We stop here a lot for drinks but decided to have lunch there on Sunday. The food was delightful and the staff wonderful.

Pleasant location with inside and outside seating. All informal but good cakes, teas, and the usual cafe fare. Recommended.

We took our friends to the Heath Cafe for a light lunch, We had three x fish finger sandwiches and my wife had mini bake brie. Not your normal fish fingers but good size pieces of breaded fish (cod) which was very filling and the mini brake brie was again a good size. Venue was good in sunshine but plenty of room when our normal British weather returns. Service was very good and staff very receptive

I stop here a lot when playing golf or going for a walk on the Heath. Great British menu, good breakfasts everything is always prepared fresh. The service here is good the staff all have smiles on their faces a good sign. Toby runs a very friendly place, there is plenty of seating both inside and outside. Nice bar area as well if you fancy a drink, great coffee's. There is plenty of parking outside.

We are occasional visitors to Royston and enjoyed a return visit to the Heath Cafe/Bar on a hot Summer day (early evening) for a cooling drink and a slice of cake.

I usually only have a coffee but the cakes on offer are very enticing. Plenty of seating inside, outside under cover and in the open air. Dogs are welcome. Good honest cafe fare and the menu, although limited, is satisfying. Good bar too. Staff very friendly.

This cafe is a little hidden gem and I love it. The staff are brilliant and the service is excellent. They have loads of tasty gluten free options. Once again I enjoyed the full English breakfast gluten free and the coffee is delicious.

Visited recently with a few friends and family. It’s in a great location with loads going on all around you. Food was very good as were the staff. The owner(Toby) was full of energy and enthusiasm which you can tell rubs off on his staff.

Had breakfast here the other Friday, great menu choice, great service very friendly everything was prepared fresh. Lovely coffee as well. There is plenty of seating and plenty of parking. They have a great view over the Heath. If the weather is good you can sit outside as well.

The Heath is a jewel in Royston’s crown and parking up at the Cafe Bar for good food and people watching is one of the best ways to pass the hours in the town. Love the cake, the atmosphere and the service.

If your hungry well worth a visit. really nice coffee and teas as well. Everything is done with a smile and friendly attitude.

I’ve visited here many times since moving to Royston and the food is always outstanding as is the coffee, both the breakfast & lunch menu has always been lovely. They also do a earl grey cake that is unreal..it actually tastes of tea!! The atmosphere is lovely and chilled too. One of the best places in Royston.

Excellent lunch with a friend. Been eating and socialising here for many years on an occasional basis. Always bustling with activity, nice mix of all ages, and food always good.

This is our second visit to this cafe. Our first visit was for breakfast and this one was for lunch. I’m a coeliac and I was very pleased with the options available for me. Today I enjoyed the battered fish and chips. A very good portion size and very tasty. The service was very good and the cafe was clean. We will definitely return.

After a lovely dog walk my husband and I stopped for early lunch and coffee. We where welcomed with a smile from the gentleman behind the bar. Ordered ham egg and chips and a chicken avocado salad. The food was delicious, the salad was really tasty and fresh. The rugby was on, there where families, lads watching the rugby and dog walkers all welcome. Would highly recommend.
