Great place. Food was yummy. we had the set lunch menu. The chilli fry to start which was amazing. Followed by the chicken curry which came with rice and a lentil dhal. We also had a side of tandoori mushrooms and onion bharjis. Now the onion bharjis are possibly the best I have ever tasted! Crispy and salty. I could have eaten loads of them they were soooooooo good!!!! The staff were friendly and attentive.

This is our second visit within a few months. Certainly one of the best Indian restaurants we’ve ever been to (and we’ve been to many!). Their butter chicken is the best and a kids favourite. The eclectic menu is one you won’t find elsewhere and yet is truly authentic. Staff were also top notch. And it’s within a setting of a delightful Tudor hotel which we also stayed at. Worth the trip to charming Amersham for this restaurant alone. Can’t recommend it enough.

This restaurant is situated within The Crown Hotel and there is a car park, albeit with slightly difficult access at the back…. We were unable to book a table online for 1pm but took the 1.15 pm option…. On arrival at 1pm there were only three tables occupied and the restaurant never became full, so that was a little strange… However, we were greeted by friendly staff, who were helpful throughout the meal. The two or three course lunch menu is really good value but I am unsure how often it changes, which is the other Atul restaurant, Vassu, in Marlow’s problem… We tried all of the starters between us and they were all tasty…. The curried fish was extremely good and the butter chicken was enjoyed too… The desert choice was limited so three of us opted for the milk dumpling which we all enjoyed. Overall, it is a more friendly and relaxed restaurant than Vassu and we will probably visit again or even try the one on Beaconsfield….

Had the tasting menu. Started with a complimentary cocktail. Nothing was too spicy which was good but still had amazing flavours due to the spices used. The malai sauce with the salmon was amazing. The duck was excellent and the venison kebab was tasty. The lamb and accompaniments were good. Nice chocolate dessert to finish. Great service.

After reading other reviews, I was looking forward to to my meal. Putting aside the good location, nice ambience and good service, the food was very average and disappointing. Our food looked and tasted very different from all the hype of the website and other reviews. Most dishes were in thin sauces with very little substance. At £70 per head for two courses with wine is expensive, and we expected better. Remain Dissatisfied and Dissapointed.

Came here for a couple of beers before dinner in a nearby restaurant. It's a pub where you go and order your drinks in the bar, barman pours them, takes payment and you take your own drinks to your table. So I was surprised to find a service charge on the drinks?

We were gifted a Virgin Experience day at Hawkyns, and were really looking forward to trying. We were disappointed to find that several of the dishes on the "price fixe" menu attracted a hefty supplement. We were asked if we wanted popadoms and water which also came at an extra charge. The dishes that we did try tasted oversalted, and sadly , no better than you could get from a supermarket. Service however was pleasant and friendly

Negatives on this occasion: Slow service - had to wait over 30mins for the 2nd course to come out. Hair in my food in one of the dishes Lack of real apology / trying to rectify the above. The waitng servers were very attentive, helpful and on point. The venue is beautiful as is the location it is sited . The food was a total disappointment which we were really surprised about as our expectation was that it was going to be good. For starter i had the squid which was like cheap frozen squid from the supermarket - i sent mine back. The lady on the table next to us made same comments but didn’t send it back. It needs to be done well not like this, it’s such poor quality, tough to eat and cheap. For the main i had paneer tikka masala - i had two pieces of paneer and very little sauce- i ended up pinching some of my husbands sauce from the butter chicken as i had so little food. i had the raspberry tart for desert - it was tough and felt like a ready made case that had been filled - whether it was or not it was hard and tough to eat and cut. As i say the waiting team were great but the food was not, i would not return, recommend or visit any of the other restaurants that we were planning to do based on this visit.

Loved this spot...who wouldn't £21.5 for 3 courses and a glass of bubbly... you can't even get one dish for that in most places! Starters and mains were perfect (size, flavor, cooked) the deserts were okay (not much to write home about) and the service was attentive and efficient. You couldn't ask for much more (except maybe a bit of a cozier / warm atmosphere (maybe have a fire going in the fireplace).

We stayed at the Crown Hotel & had the New Year's eve menu & wine flight. The dining room was nice & the staff were a little distracted at first but got better as the night wore on. This was our first experience of Mr Kochar's food & it was different & tasty. The wines were also excellent. We moved through to the bar to welcome in the New Year & the kitchen staff came out & danced to some Indian music which was truly joyous since they'd had such a busy night. Since been to Vaasu at Marlow for lunch & was a bit underwhelmed by staff & atmosphere.

I always seem to choose the lamb dishes and the spiced lamb chop was just right. Our visit was marred by a series of regrettable incidents. To begin, the food, typically a highlight of our visits, was consistently served at an inadequate temperature. Despite multiple attempts to address this concern, the issue persisted, significantly diminishing our enjoyment of the meal. This was particularly disheartening for our vegetarian guest, who had to dine separately. Polite requests, such as my brother's plea for a water bottle refill to the general manager Rohan Dixit, were met with unexpected rudeness and disrespect, including the suggestion to walk around and fetch it himself as they were too busy. When seeking clarification, the general manager not only shouted at my brother but also exhibited behaviour inconsistent with the professionalism we expect from an esteemed establishment. When my brother requested an apology for the disrespectful treatment, the general manager outright refused to provide one. This refusal contradicts the fundamental principles of customer service that we believe should be upheld in any customer facing establishment. The overall service fell far below the standard. This experience has left us questioning the reputation that initially drew us to this restaurant. Caution to those seeking insult-free dining: reconsider visiting this establishment!

Christmas lunch today was our 3rd year ant Hawkyns and it was not good. The service was haphazard eg wine pairings came mid way through the course. The Turkey dinner was basically inedible.. the meat was not breast as per other two years but dark and tough. The Brussels sprouts were burnt and the stuffing was like something from a Paxo packet. The only elements worth mentioning were the Dahl, rice and garlic naan. We were a party of 3 and when desert/canapés served I person was given an individual plate and the remaining two had to share with no other plate to eat from. Desert elements were missing from the plate given for two and I have never had to share a plate with a fellow diner whilst I tried to eat my desert!! As we had coffee tables were being dismantled as would happen end of the day not whilst diners still eating … another table were still eating. Overall our Christmas lunch was not enjoyable and we shall not be returning. Such a shame as Christmas 2021/22 very enjoyable, food delicious and service exceptional.

I met a friend for a cup of coffee here. Neither of us had been before, both of us are local. We sat at the back of the bar and ordered coffees. I'm not sure what happened next, but an entire, fresh cup of latte was launched all over me. The young man who had been carrying the coffee was very apologetic. I was relatively calm, considering that I was wearing a new, expensive, jumper, and very fortunate that the coffee was a latte, and therefore luke warm. The coffee also missed a brand new white coat by inches. The 'management' did not appear to know what to do. Another young man in a suit drifted towards us and away again several times in an ineffectual manner. My friend suggested that they pay for the dry cleaning of my clothes - he went away, came back after some time, and mumbled something about sending the jumper to the hotel's dry cleaner. I said that I would prefer to use my own dry cleaner. He went away again. I asked for a business card from him, twice. He drifted off again. I didn't receive a meaningful apology from him, let alone a business card. We were provided with replacement coffees, twice, as it took a considerable time for someone in authority to speak to me. I was wet through, and not inclined to remain there, but we needed to wait for some sort of resolution/gesture from Hawkyns. Eventually, a 'manager' arrived and agreed, at our suggestion I may add, that if I invoiced them, they would cover the dry cleaning of the jumper. Unfortunately, when I returned home, it transpired that the jumper was not able to be dry cleaned, so I had to hand wash it, and wash my trousers. I wrote to the manager via an e mail address that he provided, to express my disappointment in our visit. I am still awaiting a response. Accidents happen, but the way in which they are handled can make the difference between a customer who will return, and one who will not go there again.

The food was good, however, the service needs working on. We were left waiting in the bar well past the time we had booked the table..they had forgotten us. Made our way to the Table which was tiny... we both ordered the full tasting menu and the wine flight and both left “hungry”. When we asked for more food the kitchen was apparently closed. Stayed an hour talking only to see food on the table of the private dining party… Left feeling like a spare part and somewhat discriminated against.. I won’t return until the service improves. The waiter also knocked my wine over soaking my top, jeans and jacket. I wasn’t too bothered about this, as mistake’s happen.. on reflection the table was so small and busy it was an accident waiting to happen. Got home, made a sandwich and devoured a mince pie just to fill the void…

Hawkins is really very good, but unfortunately was not a patch on a previous visit to Atul's old Mayfair restaurant Benares. However, the depth of flavour and ingredients really do shine through compared to your average Indian restaurant, and Hawkins is set in a beautiful grade 2 listed building with period features. Service was professional and the wine list was well chosen to compliment the menu. Some dishes were certainly geared towards the English palette and everything we sampled was cooked mild to medium ( nothing too hot). Dessert was also delicious, but were certainly not Indian! My fruit tart most certainly had its roots in classical French cookery, but was really good. Overall it was well worth a visit and I'd certainly like to go back and try some more of Atul Kochers food.

I visited Hawkins for a birthday meal on 11th November. The restaurant is in a listed building and has been very well laid out whilst preserving the original features: The were options of tasting menus with or without wine and the option to swop out certain courses was available. We both chose a la carte and and have to say the flavours of all courses were exceptional. Rarely do I find the need to write gushing reviews but this was something special. The combination of flavours was something I’ve only found in a few places worldwide and outshines some Michelin star restaurants. The staff were helpful and attentive the atmosphere relaxed and the overall experience excellent. I will be visiting again very soon.

This was our second visit but sadly the service was very poor. In fairness, three people came and apologised and the bill was adjusted to a reasonable degree. But it was like a comedy of errors. Firstly we had different menus. That was sorted and we tucked into our delicious poppadoms. I asked for extra mango chutney which I was told was no problem but it never arrived. We ordered and the starters arrived promptly. They were delicious. Bit of a wait for the mains, but when they arrived I was given the sea bass dish whereas I'd ordered the Hawkyns Chicken curry. They took it away and a few minutes later came back, apologised and gave me the fish to try, on the house while they rustled up the chicken curry. I asked for another bottle of water. I went ahead and ate some of the fish (also delicious) so my partner wasn't eating alone. It was quite a while before the curry came. By that time the bottle of water hadn't arrived, I was no longer hungry and the bread that I ordered to go with the curry (instead of rice) had gone cold. I ate half the curry, 1/4 of the bread and called it a day. While the food was delicious, our anniversary evening was somewhat marred. That said, thankfully they didn't add on the 'discretionary' service charge and they adjusted the bill in certain areas (although I felt a reduction in the curry charge should really have been 'no charge' given I couldn't eat it all). We will probably try there again as they did adjust the bill unprompted and mostly appropriately. And the person who made the mistake came and apologised personally. Just expected a better experience than that. Hey ho. First World problems eh?

Very disappointing! Visited with family for the third time and feel the standard keeps dropping. Booking via phone, I was met with a very can't-be-bothered attitude. The seating area is very compact and there is no atmosphere in this restaurant- the music played also feels like you're in a cbeebies show! The service we received was terrible! The worst I have ever had- the waiter was not attentive and ended spilling my £5 bottle of water over me and the table. He didn't come back to clean it or even offer to provide a new bottle. Our table was left dirty throughout service and when I asked questions about the food, I had useless answers. One guest also had an allergy and even though I asked multiple times whether a dish contained it, I was advised it was fine. It turned out it wasn't. The food was the main disappointment. Flavourless and the same base curry used for everything. Chicken pieces are of terrible quality and there is a £8- £10 supplement for just about everything- why am I having to keep paying extra for every dish (+ the ridiculous service charge on top!). The worst dish was the lemon tart- it tasted of the fridge and the pastry was extremely soggy. Not the quality I would expect for the price being paid! When we were in the restaurant, there were quite a few disagreements between other guests and the staff- all in all a very disappointing restaurant and not worth visiting!

Most negative reviews here refer to price, which is just plain silly. Chalk and cheese. It's a shame the words "Indian restaurant" lead many into false expectations. Hawkyns compares very favourably to several of the up-market London Indian establishments, and at a far lower price. Yes it may appear expensive, but only when compared to your standard Indian, which this very definitely is not. Don't expect conventional renditions of Indian restaurant food here. For the culinary skill and quality offered, Hawkyns actually represents very good value by fair comparison. Without exception (so far) every single dish we have tried here has been universally excellent - in flavours, textures and presentation. The menu is refreshingly small, and dishes are understated which leads to lovely surprises when they arrive. Special recommendation for the Samosa Chaat starter, the Travancore Prawn curry main, and the Carrot and beans Foogath as a side, but frankly without exception everything any of us have tried here has been seriously good. Service is also excellent of course. Surely a 3rd AA rosette can't be far away.

The food at this place was bland and expensive. An average cost of a main meal was about £35, for a curry, rice and roti! My hubby asked for a spicy chicken curry and wanted one around 8 on a score of 1 to 10. It came and was not spicy at all!! I had a ribeye steak and to be fair it was ok but nothing more. There are ants running along the window sill and then coming on to your table. Avoid, save your money and go elsewhere.

I had seen the mixed reviews but thought we would give it a go since we were staying in the hotel… how bad could it be, right?? Well, we booked a table outside and it was all set up on our arrival. Promptly provided with food and drinks menu. My partner ordered a Cobra (has to be done with Indian!) I had the local gin - pricey at £8.20 + £2.90 for tonic!! I did think though, since we were there I should at least try it! Well that was disappointing - not much flavour to it, but that’s no bearing on the restaurant. We dined from the al a carte menu, which didn’t have a huge selection but I welcomed that because some menus can be over whelming! We weren’t struck by any of the starters so chose to have poppadoms for a starter, they were nice. Came with mango chutney and a tomato sauce thing, again it was just nice. We were surprised by the amount of them we got but they were £4.95, so I guess value for money wasn’t too bad. We were give a complementary amuse bouche - chickpeas with some sauce on top, they were unusual but ok. The waiter expressed his opinion that it should be tried in one mouthful, my mouth isn’t that big! Next our mains arrived. We chose the prawn curry, butter chicken, pilau rice and plain naan. The prawn curry was very nice, the prawns were huge and the sauce was flavourful. The butter chicken was disappointing it tasted like it was chicken in a tin of Heinz tomato soup! Very unusual for a butter chicken. Also, I’m not convinced it was chicken tikka, it seemed like plain chicken! We shared rice since normally this is plenty, but I guess we should’ve considered getting 2 as it worked out about 3 tablespoons each for almost £5!! We expected small portions since it was a Michelin restaurant but this was exceptionally small for rice! The food came in dishes that you’d have expected it to be cooked in, except they were cold so the food cooled very quickly, not that it was particularly hot to begin with. The naan was nice - probably the best bit! After all that our meal came to £90.11 which included a 12.5% service charge. I don’t mind paying a tip, but 12.5% for a table of 2 seems steep, especially for mediocre food! We have had better food and more drinks at our local for around £70! Definitely wouldn’t bother if we were in the area again, we walked away considering more food elsewhere, not at all full.

Went on the virgin voucher which is good value. Of course there are extras to pay for if you want them. A real nice touch was allowing to swap the free Prosecco for a pint. The food was good but I could have done with more spice in the sauce for my steak main. The lamb starter was very tender.

This was a birthday celebration. Possibly my mistake but the only menu available was the set menu which consisted of 3 starters and 3 main courses. We expected more choice. The food when served was bland and tepid. The overall impression was microwaved M&S (although that does a disservice to the later). The bill for three was almost £180; we did have 3 small glasses of champagne, one beer and a white wine plus water. The bulk of the bill was for the food and it simply wasn't worth it. I could have made it myself. Staff were pleasant although service was a little slow at times.

We went here for a family Sunday lunch as an alternative to going for a roast. The food was fantastic and very good value with the lunch time set menu. The dahl is exceptional and the first time my two boys have enjoyed lentils- didn't know they could be so tasty! Everything was perfectly cooked and spiced and it felt like a special meal without a huge price tag. The Crown is also such a lovely pub so it creates a fantastic setting for the restaurant. Staff were great as well. We will definitely be back.

The reviews of this restaurant are generally good but this was not our experience. We had scallops as a starter and the purée was very bland and under-seasoned. For mains we had butter chicken which was too sweet and tasted of tomato ketchup. The lamb biryani was just dull. Again under-seasoned. £108 for two. Really disappointing.

Very disappointed with their butter chicken - seemed like it was cooked in supermarket bought gravy. The chutney to go with poppadum tasted like tomato puree - never tasted anything that bad before. The restaurant instead of concentrating on maintaining the quality were more focussed...

Started the tasting menu was lovely until the main meal which was lamb. Full of gristle and tough. Very disappointed as it was all building to a lovely night but the main was tragically dissapointing. Informed the manager who agreed it was tough but no compensation until I pointed out the the fact we did not eat it.

Ordered food for collection. Just 2 small mains - took a long time, about 50minutes to collect. Staff seemed annoyed by the order for some reason. Seems as if they should let you order by phone rather than online so you get and idea of how busy the kitchen is before order is placed. When you Google the telephone number you get a generic one that says it is closed.. Food was mixed. Black dhaal was very nice but the lamb biryani I thought had way too much cardamon and not much heat to it..

I am really disappointed. The person who receives a customer like I have done something to him (I don't know about others - I am an Indian, so i felt like.........). All the time(sunday) needs to be booked. My family (3 members) didn't get a table 3 times.
