I'm vegan and was prepared to have just chips. Pleasantly surprised they had a vegan burger and big vegan sausages, which I had battered. Really made our evening, and everything was super tasty!

Shocking service and food..AVOID

Without a doubt, the worst fish and chips I've ever had. We went in to order and were told there would be a 45-minute wait. We ordered and returned in 45 minutes, then waited a further 15 minutes before our food was handed to us in cardboard boxes. The skin on the chips were grey and bitty, and the cardboard box they were served in would have tasted better. The fish was soggy and tasteless. I wish I had checked the reviews before we ordered, but how hard can it be to fry chips!? 🤦‍♂️

It was busy so we thought this was a safe bet. Unfortunately it was not. Ordered haddock and chips and a kids chicken bites meal. Waited over 30mins for the food. The batter on the fish was inedible, it tasted absolutely disgusting. The fish was mushy and not cooked properly throughout- some parts were cooked and flakey however most was mushy and underdone. The chips were ‘skin-on’ and were not nice (lots of black bits and bad potato bits) Not what you’d expect from a fish and chip shop. The kids meal was inedible too, the chicken bites were not chicken bites but breaded chicken strips. Not what we wanted and didn’t taste very nice at all. Would not return and would not recommend.

Waited 10mins for it to be cooked fresh, so really disappointed when the chips were cold and tasted stale, fish ok but really greasy. Think the oil was old as it was all very brown and not worth £13.50.

Don’t spoil your holiday in Fowey by ordering fish and chips from here. I can’t understand what’s wrong with the place but it’s badly organised and the food is awful. Come on ‘owners’ step up and sort this out. I’ve never know such a poor chippy. AVOID.

Well ordered large portion of fries and a sausage Friend ordered small portion of chips and scampi ! Small chips were larger than large portion and scampi was five tiny pieces for £5 !! Had I of open before getting home would definitely taken back for a re

I do enjoy fish and chips and eat them regularly but I’m afraid these were pretty terrible. Chips were soggy and very very greasy. The fish was cooked ok and was tender and not chewy, but the batter like the chips was soggy and really greasy. Ate half of them and binned the rest off as I was feeling queasy due to the grease. Would definitely not go back or recommend.

Probably the lamest chips I ever had. Ordered salt and vinegar chips plus some cheese topping as well - cheese wasn’t even melted, salt and vinegar hard to be found. Service seemed to be quite bored - understandable… Chips were soggy. You’re better off getting an ice cream sandwich around the corner.

Delicious fish, delicious chips and delicious curry sauce. Can’t fault it. Freshly cooked to order. The staff were friendly and gave us the heads up about a possible wait due to everything being cooked from scratch. We were happy to wait in the shop but the staff offered to bring it to us if we’d have preferred to sit on the harbour to wait. Recommended.

Fish and chips very good but staff do not know how to cook chicken bites…….they were raw! Good thing I checked before giving them to my children. I’ve been hospitalised before from eating uncooked chicken in a restaurant!! It was not pleasant!!

Slow as hell… 40 minute wait… didn’t bother in the end. Be quicker to catch your own fish and grow your own potato. Not cheap either.

Worse fish n chips I’ve ever had. Great if you’re on a diet because the fish is the size of the palm of your hand and the chips are disgustingly soggy and it’s so expensive for this tripe that you can’t then afford to buy a replacement meal so just go hungry. It’s the type of rubbish you expect from an inner city miles away from the coast not a coastal town. Don’t waste your money.

Not great. Ordered two large cod. Received one large and one very skinny small plus another extra morsel. Heard the chef saying he'd got that wrong! Chips were so dry they stuck in your throat like they'd been cooked and reheated. Real shame. Service was good - we got there as it opened. Don't like giving negative reviews but it was disappointing. 😢

I had a gluten free fish and chips here and they were good! Especially the portion of chips was enormous. Paired with tartar sauce which was also delicious. Couldn't reccomend the vines they carry. I tried the rosé and it was definitely the worst wine I've ever had. I dread to try the white one now ;)

Great little find, great service. Food was delicious and bonus if you are a Vegan. My wife said best crispy battered Vegan Sausage ever along with something never tried before a yummy pea fritter! Highly recommend and sit on bench for a priceless view of Fowey Bay

Worst fish and chips we've ever had, threw them away and went to a Restaurant. Very disappointing as one of pleasure in life is to eat fish and chips overlooking the sea. Maybe just a bad night, but we won't be going back on our next visit.

I recently visited Fowey Fish and Chips, and it was an outstanding experience! The portion of chips was impressively generous, and I loved that they were served with the skin on, adding a rustic touch. The haddock was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and tender – easily some of the best I've had. To top it all off, the prices were very reasonable, making it a great value for such high-quality food.

Ordered the following: - Large cod and chips - Curry sauce - Small scampi Ratings: Fish: 9.5/10 Scampi: 7/10 Curry sauce: 6/10 Chips: 4/10 For context when reading this review: I’m the kind of person for whom fish and chips is all about the fish. I’ll eat some chips, I’m not unhappy they’re there, but they’re very much making up the numbers. My wife on the other hand loves, LOVES, the chips. For her, the chips and the curry sauce are very much the star of the show. So how much you appreciate this food will very much depend on whether you’re more like me or my wife. The fish was honestly some of the best takeaway fish I’ve ever had. The batter was so thin, yet beautifully crispy and the fish was plentiful, flavoursome (not easy for cod) and succulent. The scampi was good, not amazing, but good. Honestly, I don’t know if I’ve ever had world class scampi, something tells me I haven’t, as I’ve never been blown away by any I’ve had. And this scampi was better than most I’ve had. The fish inside was plentiful and the batter was crispy and tasty. It’s a solid scampi, but it won’t change your life forever. Curry sauce was ok, according to my wife, but a little “poncy” as she likes to say. Fish and chip shops tend to either have a very classic curry sauce or a curry sauce that they tend to get a little too “creative” with. This one fell into the latter camp but only just. It was decent enough. The chips need work. They do have a slightly grey appearance but to me this just seemed to be a combination of the variety of potato used and the fact they keep the skin on. I like a soggy chip, the fat ones that flop around on your fork, but every “floppy” chip I identified turned out to be quite tough upon eating. They’re not inedible as some have suggested and seemed to be cooked fresh, but they’re a far cry from good. For me, this was no big deal, but my wife was disappointed. But the place was clean, the staff friendly, and the wait time 5 minutes (ordered on a Friday night at around 18:45). I would come to this fish and chip shop again for everything bar the chips; I’d sooner cook McCains at home. But everything else was either superb or good. So, it all comes down to how much you care about the chips really.

I’m not especially fussy when it comes to fish and chips and I’m really conscious that the reviews here are either really good or not so great… well we clearly got unlucky. I couldn’t manage more than a few bites, and I was actually pretty hungry. Really grey, soggy chips fried in what felt like pretty old oil, and fairly tasteless fish. A real shame and a waste of a fairly long walk in the rain.

Awful, awful, awful!!! The ‘chicken bites’ were in fact the cheapest, most flavourless chicken nuggets I have ever experienced and the chips were grey and undercooked. Combine this with extremely sullen and monosyllabic staff and you have a place to avoid!!

Was the most rancid fish and chips I have ever had, skins on the spuds cooked in dirty oil, as for the fish tasteless. Find another place to eat, save your money.

Sad to say, looked very inviting when ordering.. 1/2 hr wait was unexpected & then feeling it would be a personal order cooked… the chips were undercooked despite being new potatoes with skins still on.. BUT the large Cod was completely rolled up head to tail crunchy batter scorched really & the fish looked as if it had died twice!! ! Had I seen it, it would have been refused as it was definitely not edible!! Short staffed, not prepared for service & overwhelmed. Customers were patient - hope they all got a better meal.. Easy to take good money BUT not the standard of food expected! Wouldn’t recommend.. too many other options..

Grey shrivelled chips, probably been cooked 10 times and went rock hard after 5 minutes. Got 5 pieces of tiny scampi for £5. Fish batter was dark and rock hard. Would not recommend! Went down the road to Charlestown the next day and had far better for the same price.

Best chips I've had in ages, so much so that we went back to comment. We had just popped in as we were passing so hadn't looked at any reviews (luckily, as it may have meant I missed a good thing). We only had the chips so can't comment on anything else but what we saw looked good and was well priced.

This is an excellent fish and chip shop. Would highly recommend and would even say go out of your way because it’s worth it. Excellent fish, the batter was crunchy and so lovely. Beautifully cooked fish and the chips were great too. Best fish and chips I’ve had in a long while. Very friendly new owner who is trying to turn this business around. Ignore previously bad reviews as this doesn’t relate to the new owner.

Best fish and chips about , ordered a fish and chips and curry sauce, the fish cooked perfectly and the batter was delicious and so crispy, mountain of chips nice and crispy on the outside and light and fluffy inside, would highly recommend this to anyone visiting fowey, I believe there is recently a new owner so please ignore any other reviews

Don’t understand what all of the bad reviews are on about. Service was good, very reasonably priced, food was decent. £1.70 for a cone of chips is a bargain

The chips seemed to think they were still in the field, undercooked and bewildered in the bag. The chicken burger was a masterclass in aridity, crying out for a splash of sauce. The fish was passable, but its batter wore a coat of grease like it was going out of style. A friendly suggestion: less time spent jousting with online reviews, more time perfecting the fryer's art. If there were any other options in the village, that's where we'd be.

Good Friday 2024 - you would hope the local chip shop would be prepared! The most awful service I have ever experienced in a takeaway! The man in charge was clearly stressed and very rude to every customer! Had there been an alternative I would have told him to shove his fish and chips up his a*se! The poor assistant was thoroughly embarrassed and tried to make up for his colleagues awful behaviour! If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen! To top things off the food was awful… completely overcooked! The chicken burger had no salad or mayo…just a plain bun with a costco chicken burger in! Never again! What a shame this is the only chip shop in Fowey!

Stopped in here today just to get a small portion of chips to eat, whilst walking to Readymoney Cove. Ordered a small portion, costing £2.70. Was told there would be a 6 minute wait, as they are cooked fresh to order. Being from Cornwall, I have eaten from many different fish & chip shops, and I can honestly say these were the best chips I have ever eaten. Cooked to perfection, and fantastic portion size, I've had smaller large portions before. Can't wait to have them again.

Chip portion was huge, and they were possibly the best chips I've ever eaten.

We was genuinely shocked when we unwrapped our fish and chips to find that the fish was swimming in oil, so much so that it had gone through the wrapping paper. The fish was warm (and should have been hot as we were staying just up the road from the fish and chip shop). The chips were soft as if they had just been warmed up. I am writing this review as I am concerned someone will become ill with the standard of food that is being served. I now regret not reading the reviews first before going to the fish and chip shop.

Probably the worst fish and Chips we have ever had! Frozen fish for starters, like you would buy in a supermarket, Grey rubbery scampi, the cheapest kind! cold chips! I mean, really! You are positioned on one of the most beautiful Cornish coasts with an abundance of fresh fish on your doorstep. You don't deserve to be in such a beautiful place. Your response is arrogant, you clearly don't care about what you serve your customers We took our food home, 2 minute walk. Had the best fish and Chips at Walkers in Padstow. You could get some lessons from them.

The fish was good but the chips were horrible very oily and we asked for pea mash we paid it and never have it!

We were hungry and decided we would try the local chip shop for cod and chips as we were beside the sea and as they are meant to be the best! £13 for a single cod and chips was a bit expensive but we are in Fowey. What we received was chips that were reheats! The cod was overcooked. But for the money we paid we should have had fresh chips and a nice bit of cod! I should have read the reviews! I was in Mousehole and had the best fish and chips for £10 they were 1st class as for yours they are only fit for the seagulls! As for your auto reply it actually says a lot about your customer service! I have copied and pasted your auto reply below. The worst chippy we have ever been to. £30 pound down and honestly it was vile. We waited 40 minutes, the staff really need some training on how to prep in advance fish for orders instead of doing 1 order then the next. The fish batter was horrible and even my two kids refused to finish. Don't waste your time with this place. Also the owner clearly doesn't take responsibility for trying to improve the establishment and blames the customers attitudes for the reviews. Clearly needs to look a bit closer to home with the issues.

The staff also got a few other peoples orders wrong in front of me. Hygiene of the back kitchen was suspect. EDIT - thank you for replying but no it’s not that the fish and chips weren’t like my local. I have had dozens of fish and chips over the years in London, Newquay, Swanage even Derby. Yours were by far the worse. The fish batter was very hard and over cooked. The fish was hard and chewy. The chips are okay at best. Everything was cooked from frozen so not fresh.

Worst piece of fish I have ever had. Thin, grey, watery, tasteless fish (supposedly cod) surrounded in greasy, overcooked batter, cooked in old stale oil. Absolutely vile. All topped off by appalling customer service.

Poor service, waited 10 minutes before I was even spoken to. Then had to wait 30 minutes for over cooked chips. I can't believe they can only cook one order at a time and still over cook chips . The only upside is that it wasn't a busy day and the town full of tourists.

How can you get fish and Chips this wrong by the sea side - the chips tasted like they were from yesterdays lunch serving. Cod was over cooked and fish cake was undercooked. Wish we had read the reviews before we went there! Spend your money your money somewhere else — like the curry take away xx

Awful, don't go. Only gave one star because no stars wasn't an option. Everything in Fowey so far has been very good if not better, but this place is grim.

Run by incompetent imbeciles. The staff were rude and fine swearing in front of customers and didn't seem to cope well multitasking jobs. If you enjoy waiting 30 mins for a small fish and chips, with the chips being undercooked and the fish being soggy and oily then this is the place for you. I have to agree with most of the negative reviews unfortunately. They have to be the worst fish and chips I have had in a very long time. The fish was very overcooked and some how they managed to undercook the chips. Just wished I had looked on here first to avoid the place unless to are desperate for something to eat I would go elsewhere.

I'm always reluctant to leave negative reviews as I know the challenges that come with running a business. However we had such a poor experience I wanted to share with others and hopefully the owners will start to take notice of all the negative feedback. Everything was terrible and I wish I'd read the reviews before we ordered. There's a sign on the door that warns of wait times of 30-40 minutes during busy periods. It wasn't that busy (see photo) and we waited longer than this. They missed a tub of gravy from our order and we had to wait a further ten minutes for it. They boiled a kettle and made the thinnest gravy you could imagine. It was more like a cup of OXO. None of the lids were put on our curry sauce and mushy peas pots properly so they leaked in the bag. The fish batter was awful. So dark and spongy and the chips were overcooked. We go to Cornwall every year and always have fish and chips sitting by a harbour and we have some amazing memories. Now we have a terrible one. I wish I'd read the reviews and got us all a pasty instead.

Very disappointed to say the least. To start the portion sizes are terrible clearly trying to make a quick buck during tourism season but to make it worse there were two raw lumps of potato found in amongst my undercooked chips. Spend your hard earned money else where.

On a lovely night in Fowey as a holiday maker, hungry and looking forward to fish and chips I was looking forward to food from here. It was busy and looked popular. Food was awful, I waited over 30 min despite being told 10 and the lightly battered cod I ordered was cremated and bone dry. I’ve never seen such poor fish and chips in my life I demanded money back as I couldn’t even eat them. The owner agreed without quibbling and that was appreciated but they need to sort the quality / the cooking and the service. Disappointed !!

Overpriced chips that were raw and not salted or with vinegar at all. Service was less than friendly. I am in the food business. It is hard to not do chips well. Sad to see this isn’t the first bad review and no changes.

This was just so disgusting I had to write a review to warn people. We go down to fowey twice a year and have tried this place 3 times in the last couple of years each hoping it would improve or would change owners but had fish and chips last week as it was really grim. The fish was a pulp in a greasy gooey batter - I think because it was frozen and definitely wasn’t cod and the chips were if possible worse. Think also frozen and a really weird consistency with grey bits in. Never again and we will make a note in where we stay to hopefully save other guests a ruined supper. We threw it away in the end.

Ordered 2 kids cod bites and chips as me and my partner just wanted a light lunch. There was only 1 girl working who was obviously in a difficult situation given she had to do everything, however wasn’t exactly rushing to do anything. After waiting 20 minutes we got overcooked dry chips which were obviously supermarket bought and frozen. Pretty disappointing for a lovely seaside town, they are going to struggle in the school holidays!

5 stars for service, 1 star for the establishment. Bad impression from the offset when I saw a box of McCain's chips on the floor. There was no distinguishing a large cod from a small haddock, and I just know the fish was frozen. The batter was thin but not in an elegant way, like in a badly made way. Everything tasted of old oil even though they'd been closed on Monday and there were black bits in everything. Poor guy running the shop on his own was obviously having a rough time and was very apologetic, 5 stars for not walking out on the job.

Food was made fresh to order and very good. Told at order that it would be 30 mins, which isn't great when it's just deep fried. After the 45mins part of our order was missing but didn't bother going back because they had stopped taking orders as expected order completion was 1hr, (prob more like 1hr20), so didn't want to add to their stress. Need more staff urgently.

I read the reviews before using this establishment, on the whole pretty good, obviously made improvements since some of the comments, if portion size is important to you, you won't be disappointed, may want to share in some instaces....Operated by The King Of Prussia pub around the corner, if anyone interested.

Had takeaway cod and chips for the family a couple of times over the Easter holidays and the food was great. Fish cooked to order that was fresh with a nice crisp batter. Will definitely have again the next time we're in Fowey.

Half an hour wait because there was 5 customers in front of me! World's smallest portions at the most expensive prices. However I could forgive all this if they were any good which they were not! Just cooked although my daughter did get a un cooked chip ( and I mean raw) and they forgot salt and vinegar on two of the orders although the orders that had salt and vinegar did not have a lot. Insult to injury they charge a pound for sauce mayo etc which is a total rip off and poor quality. Do not spend your money here!

Visited Fowey on 3rd April 2023. Decided to try some fish and chips with my family, as this chippy was close-by and unexpectedly open (apparently usually closed on a Monday). Cooked to order, so we had a short wait. Very, very poor - the chips were undercooked, (almost solid inside), the batter on the cod was unpleasantly stodgy and completely came away with the paper wrapping - again, clearly undercooked. The actual cod, beneath the batter was ok. The battered sausages - to quote my daughters - "weren't too bad, but the batter was soft". The fried onion rings were the only part of the meal which wrre actually good, with crispy batter and tasty onion. A disappointing experience, and not cheap either, coming to about 35 quid all in. We left most of the chips for the seagulls. Absolutely would not recommend, and will definitely not be a returning customer.

2 adults & 2 infants for £31. The large fish (cod) (£8.50) was ok for size and flavour. The chips were poor. They were dry, not very hot and I’m guessing had recently been frozen. The portion size was small for something billed as “large” for £3.70. Sausage (singular) on the adult menu was imo a crime . £2 for a 3” at biggest mass produced processed sausage ? Yes that’s £16 for a frozen pack of 8. That’s maybe a 700% profit. I’m guessing that there’s no immediate competition and that locals will go elsewhere. Saturday teatime and it was quiet.

Quite taken aback the price for what i recieved. Got the food home... began to tuck in, the chip were rock hard and the fish tough and overdone... batter was alot to be desired too!!! £25 for 2 fish and chips! I would review these prices for the quality of food that you provide, hence the 1 star im afraid

Lovely food, and the 1 member of staff was doing such a fantastic job. Great fish, and our boy loved the battered sausage. Chips were not greasy and tasted lush. The owner should give that lady a bonus!

Excellent food.. We read the 2 negative reviews and were pessimistic but tried it anyway and was excellent. We had small cod and chips and scampi and chips mushy peas, curry sauce excellent and good portions and all cooked fresh whilst you wait. Don’t be put off by the negative reviews we enjoyed ours.

Wow, the fish and chips were made to order and were delicious. Very fresh ingredients, cooked beautifully. We had a range of items between five of us and all were lovely. One of the best I’ve had.

If you are visiting Fowey you must go & grab a bite to eat here. Had fish & chips for me plus the Mrs & I tell you what.... WOW! Fish is stunning, chips are so tasty. As for the staff they are so friendly & you can have a good laugh with them. Will definitely be going back again. Keep it up because it’s fantastic what your doing.

Cash payment seems to be beneath them and was flatly refused service despite cash being legal tender, and everywhere else in Cornwall is happy enough to accept cash! Even offering the exact amount, still ‘NO’ So they are happy to refuse customers paying with cash, but they are happy enough to accept cash when it comes to the lousy tip jar on the counter! Based on customer service alone, I would not recommend this place! There are nicer places with friendlier staff in Fowey.

Very friendly staff, great local knowledge and very yummy chips. Welcoming and helpful when asked about area too.

We had fish and chips from here and the fish was really good with nice crisp batter and a good size the chips on the other hand were a frozen verity and not the best which is a shame as the fish was so good

If we had read all the bad reviews we may have given it a miss. Maybe we got lucky. Cannot comment on whether the chips used were frozen to begin with but when cooked we could not tell. The chips were delicious nice and crunchy on the outside and not soggy. Fish was delicious not too greasy and a nice light batter. Portions were really generous. This was one of the best fish and chip takeaways we have had in some time and we eat a lot of fish and chips especially on holiday. It's way better than any of the chippies in the area we live. It was so good that we went back a second time. This time my wife had the calamari which she said she would not normally have as if cooked poorly is revolting but she trusted it would be ok as the food was so good last time. She had no complaints at all and my fish and chips were just as good the second time. Still mystified about the bad reviews double checked we were reviewing the correct takeaway.
