Food hot and homely - the chicken tikka and the lasagne were v generous portions . Black sheep ale on tap . It has upstairs seating too . New car park just up valley - p and d but not expensive. Value for money J reckon , all round .

Nothing to shout about. Average pub, serving average food (starters and mains) and average beer. Not too much competition locally, so that might explain it. Food and drinks are a little bit pricey for the standard of quality. The only exception was the ice-cream sundae, which was really good quality, plenty of it and good value for money. Total score is 3.5 out of 5 (an extra half point because of the ice-cream sundae).

We had been recommended the Hart Inn at Sandsend by our son in law who has been quite a few times. It did not disappoint. The waitresses were attentive, friendly and lovely. The meals outstanding and good value. Pints were a bit expensive at £5.20 a pint but we only had one with our meal anyway. Starters we chose were scallops, prawn cocktail and fried Brie. All well presented and delicious. Mains we had Prawn and dressed crab salad and a Sunday roast massive plates of delicious food 10/10 Total bill came to £100.85 We would absolutely recommend.

There are two areas for sitting outside for drinks after your meal which are both lovely attractive areas.

We come to the hart inn every month when we are in Whitby - you cannot get better, healthier food for your money than here The chef is a lovely lady who is so clean and slim, she puts a fab salad garnish with everything she serves, her salads are a revelation and her vegetable selection is seasonal and excellent Her fish and meat dishes are plentiful and filling, healthy but tasty - she has it just right Nothing is slathered In fat and gravy/sauce The wine menu is fab - a bit of everything You can also get a bottle of bollie if it’s a special occasion The roaring log fire warms the bones to perfection and the landlord is a quiet but constant presence I havn’t found a nicer place to rest my weary bones after a long day walking or cycling than the hart inn - you will not be disappointed if you stop off at the hart inn

After disappointing meal in nearby 5 star hotel decided to try this pub after a long day touring. We were welcomed by friendly barmaid and told us We could eat upstairs .Two lovely rooms upstairs and as starters had the best/freshest crab ever then main course of Whitby haddock which was the biggest and best haddock we have ever had. The previous night we had eaten in the so called famous fish and chip shops in Whitby where apparently all the fish comes from Iceland and Scotland. Head to the Hart for proper Whitby fish. A terrific meal and lovely looking pub. Wish we had stayed there instead of the 5 star hotel.

This is a cracking little pub in a stunning location. We went there as a party of seven for Sunday dinner and were very impressed. They do the usuals for roasts (which were all good) but the reason for the five stars is the seafood. Crab salad “starter” was enormous and made with the freshest and whitest crab, the prawns in garlic butter were sensational. For mains most had the roasts (good value at a tenner a go) but the smart money was on the Whitby cod and chips with mushy peas. Enormous, fresher and whiter than snow and with great peas. The one average bit about it was the chips, but it still gets a five from me.

This pub is the heart of Sandsend Village, you will find a mix of locals and tourist and everyone is made to feel welcome. Dogs allowed in the downstairs bar and in the outside seating area, but not in the upstairs restaurant. You can order food and eat in any of these areas. Food standard pub food, most of it seems homemade etc, I ordered the lasagna which was really enjoyable but had a distinct lack of meat in it. In fact one layer was just 2 sheets of pasta with béchamel sauce, but the mincemeat that was there was very tasty. My husband had the smoked mackerel pate which was lovely and son had a burger. Decent size portions and good value for money. Oh and they have proseco on tap!!

We were stopping near Sandsend for our weekend in Whitby, so ate here on our second night. The Hart Inn is a proper cosy pub, obviously popular with locals (always a good sign), and serves good food. It is dog friendly, and allow dogs in the comfortable, stylish bar area, though not in the restaurant (fair enough). We enjoyed starters of garlic prawns and mussels, followed by 1/2 lobster and chips, and a T-bone steak. At which point we were definitely too full to consider a pudding! The portions were generous, very tasty and served promptly. The only slight issue (hence not five stars) was there was some confusion with what was available, with the waitress having to come back a couple of times for us to change our minds. It wasn't a huge issue, and at least it's a sign of fresh food rather than an endless freezer full of meals!

While visiting Sandsend for a long weekend we were advised to try The Hart Inn through the people who owned our accomodation...And we weren't disappointed. This a very cosy and traditional English Inn. Beamed ceilings, stone floor, roaring fire, with a good cross section of customers...Famalies, locals, walkers, dog owners. Downstairs is the pub but you can still eat here then upstairs is the restaurant. The staff, although young, were very polite and nothing was too much trouble. We had dinner the first day and lunch on our final day and although the menu is tradtional pub grub it is fresh, well cooked and plentiful....Be warned only go for a starter unless you are starving as the mains are massive. The Whitby cod and chips, although £13, is absoloutely massive and just fits on the large oval plate and is fantastic. Lovely traditional place....Recommended.

We just wanted a quick bite to eat after a long drive to Sandsend. Staff all very friendly with a warm greeting. We had one starter and 2 main courses. All 3 dishes were ok, nothing special. From what I could see most of the dishes are bought in, as I have seen the same things in a 100 other places. The food was tasty and reasonably priced. It did what we wanted on this occasion, it is just a pity as it could do so much better with a bit of imagination from the kitchen. Sauces in sachets on the table are a personal hate. And why serve coleslaw and a slice of orange with every dish...this place could be a goldmine with just a bit more TLC and thought.

We have eaten here before in the pub downstairs but decided to book a table upstairs for this evening meal. We arrived and the bar was warm and welcoming - but the upstairs restaurant is characterless and split into two rooms. We had difficulty getting the attention of the waitress and when we ordered extra drinks from a different waitress they were forgotten. They just seemed uninterested. The food was average with nothing particularly interesting on the menu. In the end we just had basic steaks and shared a very basic pudding from the limited dessert menu.Having said all the above about the restaurant, the bar is actually much better. Comfortable seating in cozy bar area with a fire. The bar staff were friendly and there were plenty of local people in with their dogs. Downstairs is a better place to eat if you can get served there. We could not find a website for the pub and therefore could not see the menu or evening specials before booking. This has to be a big area for future improvement.

Disappointing , on Sunday as a party of 5 we planned to go to this pub, nearly overshot entry to car park not easy to get in as its on a very busy road, entered pub just before 230pm looking forward to Sunday meal , but was told by male person behind bar that they stopped serving as they were expecting a party , this person was not apologetic , more sneering , as he enjoyed the situation. Asked were we could eat , he grumpily pointed across the road 'the bistro' .we left all members of my party agreed that the manner of this person was unacceptable. The meal at the bistro was excellent . This person did us a favour. We will visit the bistro again across the road. As were here for a week.sorry hart inn your loss of 5 meals and re visits.

I have visited here several times but never been upstairs to the restaurant (usually visit with a four legged friend!) The food is varied and well priced. My only criticism is the chips are not hand cut.

This is a traditional pub with upstairs restaurant and gets very busy so book in advance if you want to be sure of a table. The menu is varied and there are a lot of fish dishes on the menu.. The Cod and chips are a huge portion with the fish hanging off the plate so a good appetite would be needed to finish all of it. Many of the customers we saw didnt manage all of it. Overall I found the food very good value for money and would return.

Nestled away in the beautiful corner of Sandsend, this pub is a little haven where you will want time to stand still. The beer is great and the food is excellent. Catch the sun in the outside terrace area and there's not another spot in the world to beat it!

£3.70 for not quite a pint of Black Sheep served with a scowl. Put us off eating there. Very bright lights and busy ambience. Not really a pub anymore and too crowded to be a relaxing restaurant.

Use this pub regularly drinks at good price food reasonable for this type of pub. Comfortable surroundings, not the best weatherspoons compared to many others. Come here regularly could do with more staff.

Called in for fish and chips to share - £10. Opened the box to find the fish in three pieces. Rancid oil taste to both fish and hard chips. Truly the worst fish and chips I have ever eaten.

This is a handy place to eat when visiting Whitby Abbey especially after climbing up the steps. Decent number of tables inside and out. It can get busy and likely there may be a queue. It is part of the Youth Hostel and serves a variety of hot and cold drinks, cakes as well as larger meal options. We all had paninis which were nice enough and the side order of chips were nice. Nothing spectacular but it filled a gap well and with nice views.

The cat's pyjamas? Dog's dinner more like. After initially nearly leaving due to the horrible atmosphere we settled and ordered a breakfast and avocado and halloumi on toast with two coffees. Our drinks arrived quickly but the food mustve taken about 45 minutes to come, with no acknowledgement of the long wait. It wasnt particularly busy. When the food arrived it was awful. The breakfast was greasy and badly cooked and I couldnt finish it. The avocado and halloumi on toast was literally a few slices of avocado and overcooked halloumi, on the side of some burnt toast. Dont bother, there are far nicer places in Scarborough.

For a large pub and the fact it was late on in the day on a Saturday, it was very clean and the staff were very polite. Food was good and nice selection of beer.
