Harlees Fish and Chips in East Dorset

We only moved to the area a few months back and have had several trips to Harlees during that time that were satisfactory. Last week, though, my wife popped in to order and collect some food on her way home. So, not pre-ordered and therefore no excuse that it had been packed and was standing waiting. Personally, I would never pre-order fish and chips because you can't guarantee how long it will have been standing when you collect. The fish itself was not bad, although we thought a bit smaller than on previous visits, but the batter on the underside was disgustingly soggy, to the extent that it remained stuck to the chips on which the fish had been placed. The chips were not great either. Guess in future I'll wait for the Tuesday night chip van for my fish & chips fix!!

Order some fish & chip meals online for collection, the order was ready for us when we arrived. Took the order away and opened up the bag to curry sauce everywhere as the lids were not on properly.. the fish was not great, seemed soggy and not cooked for long enough. The chips were very average. Very disappointed in our food and doubt we will be back.

Had to go here through lack of other choices and was too late to travel so as a local thought I’d give it another try. I wish I hadn’t, it is abysmal. I ordered the large cod and chips and battered sausage. Tiny portions, the fish was the smallest and thinnest I’ve ever had, greasy undercooked chips and a horrendous and cold/tough sausage. I’ve given this place enough chances, never again. Run by kids and a rude woman. Won’t ever return and recommend you don’t.

Did an online order, picked up, after stood waiting for over 5 mins why the serving girls chatted to one another whilst slowly doing some orders, my order was ready and waiting in a holding area. The girls obviously didn't want to be there! Got home chips were soggy and pale and tasteless, had asked for salt and vinegar with order, that hadn't been done, battered sauasage was pale and only luke warm. My wife had ordered a mussy peafritter which was awful, dry, tasteless and like cardboard. Have given this place various chances over the years as local, never again. Shame as this place used to amazing years ago!!

We stopped coming here years ago because the food was so awful. We thought we'd give it another try in the hopes that the food may have improved. It hasn't. The chips were anemic and greasy. They seemed to have stopped doing Pee Fritters (they weren't on the online menu), the food was cold and even though I'd requested Salt and Vinegar, there wasn't any. Very poor and the 2 girls behind the counter wanted to be anywhere but there. Wish we had a competitor in Verwood. It can't be any worse than Harlees. 🤢

Terrible food - very poor quality and definetely not value for money served by bickering teenagers who didnt appear to be bothered at all

Oh Harlees, whatever has gone wrong? We had your fish and chips last night and were very disappointed. This was a second chance as the previous collection was also very poor quality. The fish was acceptable but the chips soft, oily and discoloured. We think you cook too many at a time, or, the oil/fat isn’t hot enough. You used to be the best but you have lost another customer I’m afraid.

Oh, dear! The first time we went to Harlees Verwood for a takeaway F&C (4 years ago) it was OK but nothing special. Last time (1 year ago) it was really quite good. Today was awful: I know things have got expensive and I know prices have gone up, but the "Cod savers" weren't saving money for me, they were saving money for Harlees. The cod was small and not too bad. But 12 chips? I ask you! Rather tired chips, too. No wonder the place was empty this lunchtime - I think people are cottoning on. Only one member of staff in the whole place. Overall, Very clean, but food poor. Sorry, but I've got to be honest.

Dreadful. On our latest visit, the regular cod was 75% batter and skin. This chip shop was once a place we would have recommended to anyone. Our last few visits have been disappointing to say the least. Never again.

Wel moved back to verwood and thought have fish and chips save cooking for the night what a mistake Had 2 pieces of fish and one portion of chips £19 very expensive and all of it was poor and fish was all batter .chips were poor as well . I received an email to say my food was ready for collection, but when I arrived I had to wait 10 minutes as the order wasn’t even started. Absolutely disgusting, I have used this service often but never again. Disappointed with the blade attitude of it will be ready when it’s ready when it was them who sent an email to say it was ready. Then to get home and find the chips were not only warm but tasted terrible too, if I could rate 0 stars I would do

Used click and collect to order food for 4, order on time and delicious, friendly staff, no complaints at all.

After reading the mixed reviews, I had to admit to being a little dubious about using. However, it did not disappoint at all. On a tight budget, I could not run to fish, but I had jumbo battered sausage and regular chips and they were great. Just having moved to the village, I will have to see if the standards are kept up. Service was super quick and friendly from the young girl. Perhaps consider doing battered burgers please?

Shocking food. Chips were hard bits & we had to search long & hard amongst batter to find the fish. Servicepoor,frankly staffnot bothered if they serve you or not. Won't be using anymore,they're getting worse despite getting such bad reviews.

Bit naughty, but had jumbo sausage and chips Friday, chips disgusting not chipped properly. Weird colour and taste. Saturday night big order, for family. I did say our chips were not good the previous evening. The girl said check them. I did and they seemed ok. But when we got home again, dark coloured , joined together, and raw, strange dry taste. Like they had been reheated from night before. For God sake sort something out, we always come to Harlees, but not anymore. Such a shame.

We called in Saturday night for quick meal after beach. The front doors were locked! it was 20.00? The shop was busy and there were people waiting for their orders. There were lots of staff inside, all chatting and goofing about behind the counter. No one came to assist us. Another lady turned up and made her way in through the exit and got served so we followed suit. Got our order after a wait. Got to car and just checking as orders are often wrong from Harlees, and surprise surprise it was the wrong order. We took it back in and the girl behind the counter tried to give it to the man who had ordered! I said " He should have fresh food we've had our hands in that" She seemed annoyed and grunted "You'll have to wait" at him! No apology or anything. Then she gave us our "Correct" order which we again checked and this time it was missing a jumbo sausage. Guys, if you want to go home early, give your job to someone who cares, you are seriously damaging this business. Bosses: find out what your staff are up to and change them, this is happening all the time. regular customers such as us will not return as this is becoming the norm! Ordered a “large cod” and large chips, Pea fritter (actually had some this time, only fish and chip shop I’ve ever known that constantly doesn’t have them in stock, guess they’re not homemade?). All portion sizes are tiny. It’s £9.95 for a “large” cod and no joke it was as thin as a finger and as large as my hand. They have trimmed and cut this down to make it something that in most shops would be considered a small. Unfortunately it has no competition locally so it’s standards are awful, but I’ll be heading further afield going forward.

Perfect experience. Easy online order, speedy collection and best of all good was bop notch. I would highly recommend.

Stopped ordering chips a few months ago because they started being consistently bad. Went in tonight and ordered a large plain burger, got given a small one with cheese. Bun was stale and hard on one side, burger tasted off - totally inedible. Not the first time this situation has happened. Won't be going in again, place was good a few years ago but has consistently gone downhill. Borderline repulsive food at unacceptably high prices. For what it's worth, the person who served me was polite.

Absolutely awful service, al staff and rude, shouting at each other and doing food prep, poorly on the serving counter. Staff too busy talking to each other and how they can close asap that they ignored customers. Food was average but having seen how they prepare it I won’t be going back

Never known a take away food shop to turn walk in customer’s away as they are “too busy”. I will never go back to Harlees Verwood ever again and would advise everyone to AVOID this horrible Fish and Chip shop AT ALL COSTS!!!!

The difference between a small and med cod is 30g, price difference £1.75. Both were dry and tasteless, will not go back.

I have been going to harlees in verwood along time some good visits some aweful But I was really disappointed I ordered for click and collect for 6pm for my daughters birthday tea, but unexpectedly I became unwell and un able to drive from sailsbury to collect my order, I emailed harlees twice at 5pm and then again at 6pm explaining my situation I never got a replie just a message saying my food is ready, I also tried phoning them 15 times and no answer I am now £27 out of pocket All because no one responded the last time I had a similar issue the gave me a refund but had ago at me about it due to food being wasted I cannot help it if I have medical issues

Not only was I made to stand outside for 20 minutes in the pouring rain for something as simple as a battered sausage and chips I was watching every other customer who ordered after me getting their food first I also couldn’t even have something as simple as salt and vinegar on my chips. One star given as you can’t give a zero.

Shame this is the only fish and Chip shop near by. I ordered online. When I got to the store my order was ready - I was 5 min early and I think it had already been ready a while, it did not taste fresh. I asked for Salt and vinegar but was told I had to order that online - I did not see any options online for that and was told you had to scroll down to the bottom for it. My Last visit!

Second time In a roll I’ve had a poor meal from here, such a shame as I only live around the corner. Saturday night 5.30pm and I bought two meals, one cod and chips and another battered sausage and chips. The fish and sausage was luke warm. The chips were cold and dry like cardboard, was hoping for fresh chips as it was the start of dinner time, never asked if I wanted salt or vinegar, I would’ve returned it but with current Covid restrictions thought better of it, unfortunately won’t be returning anytime soon as could do loads better with a bag of McCain’s oven chips! Harlees is our local fish and chip shop, however for the last few years we had been using another in Ferndown (please see my previous, not so glowing review). Having wrote this honest review, I felt an updated review was due.Some friends fairly new to the area had recently tried the fish and chips from Harlees, despite our negative review and found them delicious. We decided to give Harlees another try.We are now completely won over!We’ve had weekly fish and chips including tonight which have all been fresh and delicious!The app is brilliant and easy to use, chips are consistently delicious and fish is so fresh! Curry sauce is also the best!We are now completely converted! We’ve also sampled the chicken burgers and pies Highly recommended.Keep up the great work and delicious food.

Been on holiday several times in this area and used this chipshop before and more than once. Don't remember it being this good before. However due to covid 19 measures they have shrunk their menu and concentrated on fish and chips and sausages. No pies no fried extras just fish and chips Well it seems to paid off with perfectly cooked cod with fantastically crunchy and light batter and nicely fried chips that taste of potato and have a slight crunch to them with a soft middle. The mushy peas were not to my taste as were dark, pureed and had no taste of peas. That aside was a very pleasing meal for myself and the two kids on the last night of hols.

Wish I had paid more attention to negative reviews. On Sunday 23rd August booked online to pick up my order between 16:30 & 16:40. They open at 16:30. They opened on time. The girl opening up didn't say a word to people waiting outside. Somebody inside the shop welcomed people in and explained the procedure. She was friendly & polite. Apparently the fryers weren't up to temperature yet so food wasn't ready. Think they may have been caught out by 'unexpectedly' having to open at 16:30. Given pager/buzzer so that could wait outside (covid 19 precaution). Worked well. I think not being ready to go at 16:30 shows disrespect for customers. Had scampi and plaice with chips. The scampi was okay...the plaice was a small portion with as much batter as fish....They report on their website that chips will be crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. These were variable with a few crunchy (very few), the majority soft and greasy, some hard & undercooked, nothing like described. To be honest I don't think the cook knows what they're doing or doesn't care. I would not use again.

Since the social distancing rules Harlees has introduced a great click and collect one way system. No waiting, really fresh food. To be honest an improvement all round!

I am an occasional visitor when I travel down to visit my mum.Been popping into Harlees for a few years, never had bad food or service, sometimes the chips are a bit luck of the draw, sometimes great sometimes ok, fish has always been good.This was my first visit since Covid and I found the whole experience interesting and very professional. The signage explained the rules and regs and the young lady serving was extremely helpful.They use a pager system which was a first for me, but it worked very well.I would recommend Harlees for the food, the service and the pager system.The three meals I purchased, Cod, Sausage, Chicken Nuggets all with chips were excellent.

We have visited 3 times as a family, first face a lot of hostility as we hadn't clicked and collected, being on holiday I am supposed to read people minds. So we clicked and collected an hour later had great food, second time no worries, chips a little soggy. But the last time unfortunately means I not he returning. Clicked and collected as we have previously, realised whilst doing some shopping I didn't ask for salt and vinegar, so arrived ten minutes early, presented my code and screamed at its no ready. I politely said that fantastic could I have salt on 1 and salt and vinegar on another, informed I should have added it to my order, I politely said, well if it's no ready surely this could be added, well I I my got a bloody eye roll and a tut from the server. Fed up with some of these companies thinking they are doing the customers a favour by opening, we are doing your a favour by giving you custom, you need to have a word with your front of house staff and remind them about customer etiquette. But it won't be my custom.

Absolutely delicious fish and chips.Portions were ample for my husband and I. In fact, I chose the small cod and tiny chips and my hungry husband the regular cod and regular chips. More than enough!!!!Clean and very friendly premises and their clock and collect service was perfect. Well done to all the staff and thank you.

Very nice food. However, unfortunately let down by an inexcusable lack of forks in light of the current situation. In the current virus situation you simply cannot offer a take out service without forks. In my opinion, in the current climate forks are as essential as social distancing measures. The business should simply not be allowed to operate until the shop has an adequate supply of forks. Should not be giving people no other option than to eat with fingers of on foot or too far from home. Or there should be a statement online when ordering that forks are unavailable.

Very disappointed after I went for dinner tonight as big now open signs visible from road. Sign on door says contactless payments only. Waited a few minuets as staff were busy moving bags and refilling cleaning products. Then a member of staff asked for my order number, I said I had not ordered yet. She then fold me they are only doing click and collect. Poor Management - instead of big open now signs put up open for click and collect signs. Simple! Poor Customer Service - anyone of the 5 staff could have acknowledged me when I entered instead all carried on with their tasks and left me waiting.

Top drawer fish ‘n’ chips. The world is full of fish and chips shops the service here is excellent. The cleanliness is very good and the staff efficient.

Having ordered we waited 25 minutes to be told that they didn’t have the pie we ordered. They couldn’t do any pies as the microwave was broken. They couldn’t do beans again because the microwave was broken. They couldn’t do a savaloy. Why not say at the beginning. We chose other items. We did get an apology after 30 minutes but why not earlier? They only take cash as well ! If only there was another fish and chip shop in Verwood.

To the review below I was in the chip shop at the same time as described .. . the ‘old lady’ she was not whispering to her other college about you she was asking for a manager to come round as she was extremely busy, she was also making a poin. They forgot my burger which was a 25 minute wait so I went back in, I said my dinner was cold and most of the chips were, I wasnt offered any I had to ask, then the old lady with the blonde hair started whispering to her colleague about me, I only asked for hot chips, I felt very insulted and such poor service, the curry sauce was vile and no one could eat it, food was half wrapped in the bag, wasted my money here .

Just drove 20 minutes for fish and chips as Harlees Verwood advertise as being open until 2pm. Arrived at 13:20 and they were closed. Lights were on but chairs were blocking all the doors. No sign to explain why not open as advertised. Pretty poor show.

12th Dec @ 17:19 Shocking service from staff which are supposed to be in training. If they're in training then train them.I ordered a small cheeseburger with coleslaw and mini chips, what could be so difficult. 5mins after I placed my order I was told they don't put coleslaw on the burgers, obvs an error on the "latest and up to date" till system. I was offered mayo on the burger which I had, and then when I asked for the refund for the cost of the "no coleslaw" I was told they cudnt do this because I had mayo instead, so 50p for not even a sachet worth of sauce was atrocious. Then as I went to get out of the car in Morrisons which is 200mtrs away i took a bite of the burger and it was cold. When i returned with the meal 15mins later they said they cudnt anything about a cold burger as it cudnt stay warm for 15mins anyway.If this is the way a company runs with 2 fryers on a quiet midweek shift then theres no hope for Harlees as the quality of food and service is going downhill very rapidly.

Absolutely appalling, all I wanted was a fish and chips end of the day, I make a phone call order as i have normally done the last couple of times, but apparently all of a sudden they don’t take phone orders which is fine but it hadn’t said that anywhere, but as I go in to collect my food I already had a rude comment from the male fryer, there’s about 5 young girl staff which all stood there having a mother’s meeting laughing, so I had asked about the phone call orders and apparently they do them but I was offered the app but I had called specifically as the app doesn’t let me say about any extra information, I have never been treated like this before by staff, I work in retail my self and I’ve Been taught the customer service and that was awful I wouldn’t recommend this place at all

Prompt service, friendly staff, good food and generous portions for a reasonable price.It’s a fish and chip shop and performs that role very well.I walk in, say “hello”, order food and end up happy and well fed.I don’t use an app, pre-order or ask for delivery, as I like to keep life simple.I would recommend Harlees.

VERY disappointed bought a large portion of chips tonight at verwood Harless £3.10 and not at all large ! Would say more like small/ regular what a rip off. Would say only enough for one person

I ordered via their new app and arrived on time to collect my order. I stood by the collection point and was ignored. Eventually I saw one of the staff label a box with a code and put it in a cabinet to keep warm and then I saw another box with my code on it. Eventually I had to wave my phone and go to the other end of the shop pushing in front of others to obtain my order. By the time I got it, it was 4 mins later than the collection time so was luke warm when I got it home. The food was average, the batter a little hard, probably would have been better had it not been kept in the warmer and given to me on time. No apology from the staff.

The best Fish and Chips for miles around . Beautifully cooked with plenty of crispy batter ,chips not at all greasy and very big helpings

How uncompromising and inflexible can a local fish and chip shop be ? Being in a hurry and having to get someone to watch over the grandchildren while I popped out to get a meal, I phoned ahead to the shop. I asked could i please place an order to pick up in 20 minutes time. I was told, no I couldn't as they don't take phone orders. I was told I could use their app. I told them that I did not have access to the app and could they just write down the order. I was told "no they could not as they don't have the means" I mentioned that their other branches take phone orders. Again, I was told they did not have the means. I said you mean you don't have a pen and paper ? I let them know my thoughts and left it there. Why am I not surprised that so many people go elsewhere when coming home from work ?

Went here for lunch, cod chips, pea fritter & curry sauce. I was sevond in the que, it took 20 minutes to get my food, after 15 minutes I asked if I had been forgotten as at least 8 otgers were served, only to be told its coming be patient and looking at me like i was something you step in on the pavement. Food was then cooked in 5 minutes and i smiled said thank you and left to a grimace. This place used to be good, no it seems they have gone gluten free mad, the chips and pea fritter are great, the curry sauce is titally disgusting now its gluten free and the batter (if you can call it that) on the cod is so thin its more like flowered fish, i assume this us another gluten free crime. Luckily there is another great fish and chip shop close by in West Moors, I will be going there from now on.

Staying at the Camping and Caravan club VERWOOD They recommended the fish and chip shop Even though this is only about 5 miles from where I live as I was staying for the weekend I thought I’d give it a try Can’t believe that seven members of staff it looked packed But I’ve got my mail within 10 minutes And even though I had to do 2 1/2 miles they double bagged it for me and it was still Warm by the time I got back to the caravan I did ask if they could put it in foil but unfortunately not

Food lovely staff need to smile 27/05/19 enjoyed our lunch though. Maybe some staff training needed.

Discovered this fish and chip shop on Saturday while we were travelling back to our campsite nearby. Great fish and chips. Good value.
