Harlees Fish and Chips in Wiltshire

I wrote a glowing review four yeas ago after our first delivery from Harlees Amesbury. Over the following two years we had several equally good meals but tonigh was our first meal from Harlees for some time so we were really looking forward to it. Sorry to say it was the worst fish and chips we have ever had. The chips were hard and the fish appeared huge but it turned out to be mostly soggy batter. Regrettably we will not risk orderng again. Harlees you have definately deteriorated and to think I have always recommended you but sadly no longer.

Just had the worst fish and chips in history soggy greasy chips a thin fillet of cod with soggy batter just terrible sorry harlees your just rubbish you don't even sell pies

Disappointed. Burgers only just warm, chips cold and horrid. Certainly not freshly cooked! Gone down hill badly.

Went to try tonight 06/01 as says award winning in the window. That should be classed as false advertising as I don’t know how they are award winning from what I got. Ordered regular portion of chips at £3.30 I was shocked when I got home and there were about 30 dry bland cold scraps of chips. Luckily didn’t order the small portion or would have got about 5 chips. Will definitely not be going back. Total rip off

Went to Harlees tonight for dinner. I ordered 3 regular fish and chips which came to £33. I wouldn’t have minded but I’ve won bigger fish at the fun fair. I will definitely not be going back, a complete ripoff!

Really disappointed with them, the place looked like it was closed, I got in, customer service 0 they made me feel that I was not welcomed, also they seemed quite unhappy being there. I got a quarter of the order(see photos) (with raw chips and uncooked chicken bites). As it was sealed I didn't open it in the shop! However, you should feel ashamed taking someone's money for that... if you don't enjoy your job please feel free to find something else!

Not the best chippy and probably the only one on the planet that doesn't sell pies the frying oil always seems to leave a slightly bad taste

Haddock delicious, but regular portion of chips ridiculously small. I won’t be going back. There are plenty of better chippies, the best is King Fish in Bulford.

I got 1 large chips 2 large battered sausage the chip was a small and the oil their fryering with is cheap rubbish leaves the most horrible taste in your mouth I am just after throwing up I will never eat again

Harlees is a chip shop perfect for its community! The staff provide an excellent service and are always polite and friendly. Considering all meals are cooked to order, even on their busiest nights, I've only ever recieved the best quality fish and chips! Menu items range from classic battered cod, haddock or plaice to chilli beef loaded chips and pineapple fritters! There are a few options for vegetarians as well! Some items are a little pricier than other chip shops but once you sink your teeth into the grub you'll know why! My go-to order: Garden Burger with Cheese Battered Sausage Regular Chips Curry Sauce Keep up the quality service and quality food guys!

First and last visit. The food is pretty on par in price for everything except chips. The large portion is what I would normally expect as a small and super expensive. Order took over 40 mins to prepare which I could sort of understand if busy but we had nothing special on order and people who came in after left before us. At one point the 2 ladies behind the counter had a small argument with one asking the other why she was preparing orders 40 & 42 before 39, we were 39!!! The reason for 2 stars and not 1 was due to the free battered mars bar given due to our waiting time.

The food was great, although the amount of chips was pitiful. Paying three pounds for a handful of chips was not great

Delicious fish & chips again. We are not that close, but never miss an opportunity to have the most yummy fish & chips when in the area. Best we have had in ages. Skinless haddock particularly tasty.

Friendly staff still,,the fryer girl excellent job fish piping hot nice crispy batter,,also the chicken nuggets spot on!!.For me I would like a loyalty card,😄.

Saturday evening visit, friendly, cheerful staff, food cooked to order nice and hot. Portion size was good.Will be back again.Hope they take cash again one day?

Soggy and greasy,not enjoyable to eat.Found someone’s wallet on floor,so handed it to one of the staff,who just looked at me as if I was a criminal,then she spoke to another one of the staff,who took the wallet,and didn’t even acknowledge me.

Ate here for the second time last week food was really nice it would be good if chip portions were a bit more generous

Came in for burger and chips, plus 2 sausages and a large Battered sausage at £13.60 a Rip-off. The large chips we ordered were smaller than most small chip orders you get in other chippys Rip-off. And the food wasn’t that great either. Staffed moaned when we ordered a cheese burger and it came with onions and relish. Which we didn’t want. Tried to say we had to have it or nothing, cheeky sods. Rip-off with poor staff customer relationship skills

Order here regularly due to living locally. Tonight will be the last time. It was very quiet with 3 members of staff working. They weren’t preparing any orders just stood around. Ordered for a collection and they forgot 2 items. I tried to phone them as this has happened on several occasions before. No answer but funnily enough the phone was engaged after the third attempt. Very bad service.

Used the online ordering system yesterday worked really well the mushy peas were a bit small but fish wash yum as was the batter chips were amazing. Will deffo use this place going forward. Would be good if they did pies 😁

I like this chippy as the staff are always nice. You can order the food over the phone and proceed to the pub next door for a quick pint or those drinkers (two or three). Collect your food in the arranged time and go home...

Poor service, the older blonde lady, assume manager, needs to learn when the right time is to have a chat with staff, she has a go at them in front of everyone!!

I looked online to see when they closed, and it stated 8pm as pictured below. Drove over at 7:20 to find the place locked up and lights off!? Closed before 7:30pm is ridiculous and advertised times need to be changed!!

I have bought fish and chips three times from this shop. On all three occasions both the fish and the chips were overcooked. They were very dry and tasted revolting. Give this chippy a wide berth.

I ordered online using their app. Order was pretty simple 8 chicken nuggets, 1 plain chicken burger, fish cake and battered jumbo with 2 portions of chips. We ended up throwing most of the meal away. Nuggets, sausage and chicken were burnt, the nuggets too crispy and dry to eat. The fish cake was edible. Most of the chips went in the bin, although they weren’t burnt the portions were mostly made of the scrappy bits and I struggled to find any chips with potato in. If I had to guess I would suggest they had been reheated. Far too crunchy to eat. A treat turned into a trauma and 2 very hungry kids Very disappointed. This is the second bad experience in a month. We used to visit regularly-not anymore. I will head into town.

Always have a pleasant experience when visiting Harlees. The manager Ross is always so hard working and friendly and goes above to deliver excellent customer service and food. Will definitely recommend to my friends.

We moved to Amesbury 9 months ago and have regularly had fish and chips from Harlees in Bence Court. However, the last few times it has been disappointing. We usually have two regular cod and one regular portion of chips and the last couple of times one piece of fish has always been better than the other and on two occasions one piece of fish is broken in half. You go with the flow rather than cause a fuss but tonight we had the usual order and it was bad - both were well over cooked and dry and the piece I had had hardly any fish. Sorry Harlees, we will be giving you a miss for a while.

We have fish and chips from here quite often and they are usually faultless. Recently however the standard has taken a nosedive. The fish was over cooked and 50% batter, the chips were dry, hard and inedible and the seafood basket was extremely underwhelming. The young girl serving was rude and spent most of the time I was sat waiting for my food complaining to her colleagues commenting on how busy it was a why were so many people coming in for fish and chips tonight. Don’t worry, we won’t be coming back again.

We visit Harlee’s frequently, and the standard of food is usually ok.

Great standard of food, with good service too. Good range of items on the menu. Busy, but that is just a testament of the great food.

It is very sad to say that here is an establishment that can serve good quality food, but sadly this is too inconsistent and so too the helpfulness of the staff. Despite this, they are busy, so be prepared. Would I recommend this outlet, sadly no. They do have another branch, not too far away, which is excellent.

The food we had was as you would of hoped for. It was a clean and well presented establishment and will visit again.

Ross and his staff go all out, rvery time, to make this the best fish and chip shop around. Everything is always cooked fresh, to order. The portions are great and the staff are always helpful.

Ordered a large chips. Got a small portion of old, not fresh chips, about 1/4 full of remnants. Don’t bother, tried twice, disappointed twice. Noble house Chinese are better at chips than the chip shop next door !

We had 50 fish and chips and 25 sausage and chips ordered. All were ready when we picked up at 8.30pm at the agreed time. All the food was piping hot and not at all soggy despite having been in polystyrene box for transportation back to the party for 10 mins. Everyone said how much they enjoyed the food and what a brilliant idea as there was no washing up. Harlees even took back all the empty boxes for recycling. Ross, the manager, was so helpful and even ordered disposable cutlery. Overall EXCELLENT.

As a local there are times when fish and chips is the order of the day and if you... like me, want good quality food, then here is the best plaice to buy your fish, Cod knows it's the cook who makes the difference between good tasty food. (as to some food you get elsewhere), and I don't mind the wait, especially as the the quality of service and the staff are excellent. I very highly recommend it.

The 1st time I had fish and chips it was greasy, this time round it was lovely, not greasy at all, and just the right amount per portion! normally the portions at other chip shops are massive and a lot goes in the bin!

Visited on Sunday 29th July. Excellent service by friendly staff. I didnt mind waiting for my food as it's cooked to order and they were busy.The food was very nice and worth the wait.

Give it a miss. As stated above, greasy overly priced and not at all appealing. I Won’t be returning.

Bought small portion of chips here and asked for it to be double wrapped as I had a couple of miles to drive home. Shocked at the price and the very small portion size. When I got home I discovered that it was not double wrapped and all the chips (not many) were cold. Will not be returning as much better options available in the town.

La seulel chose à reprocher c'est qu'ils affichent small medium large et quand on commande il y a toujours quelque chose qui manque c'est un peu gênant .Par contre pendant l'attente on a regardé travailler les employés et c'est très pro et propre.

I’ve been to Amesbury Harlee’s since it opened I can honestly say over the the past few visits (last 6 months) the standard of the food has declined hugely. Chips are regularly burnt with black on most where the potatoes haven’t been prepared properly. The battered sausage we ordered, well the sausage wasn’t fully cooked inside. It is such a pity as the standard of food was really excellent in the past.

In fairness, the quality of food and standard of service in the majority of restaurants in Amesbury is probably about as bad as it can get, and Harlees is sadly no exception.

Went the other day after about a year between visits. Ordered a large chips and paid with a £5 note. When my number was called to collect the order the staff member queried if she had given me too much change, I said she gave me back the correct amount, she said she was sure she didn't and I then showed her the amount she gave back as I had just put it in my pocket. She still didn't seem convinced. It's not difficult to give the right amount of change from 1 simple note for 1 portion of chips. I would understand it it was a complicated order but this wasn't. An unnecessary farce. Chips were nice but haven't tried anything else here to comment.

I went in to harlees fish and chip shop the fish and chips were ok but small and not cheap the thing I did not like was you went in gave your order paid then they cooked your order so you had to wait to me the point of a fish and chip shop is you go in get your fish and chips and leave its ready for you to go fast food so I did not like the wait also people with smaller orders got theirs before you so no not to happy with this fish and chip shop to slow high price small portions

We often come in for a chippy the service is excellent and so are the staff ... shout out to Kim she is fantastic in there ! Never ever been disappointed with our meals.

The food is good and what you would expect from a local chippy. Only this is the wait for your order can take 15 / 20 minutes sometimes. But then it has all been fresh cooked when we have been in.

We don't have fish and chips very often but were busy and fancied some . They were absolutely lovely, cooked fresh fish well cooked and didn't leave any on my plate. Well done ladies who were cooking that night.

This is our local and we do visit here at least once or twice a month. The food is great with friendly service but you will find you have to wait. Generally this isn't too long but on Fridays can be excessive.

Staff were extremely rude especially the manager!! Very expensive and definitely not worth it. Will not be returning.

Great fish and chips always polite staff and efficient and you know it's freshly cooked as only cook what's ordered they respect the military as able to get military discount on your order

We have had many fish and chips from here many times, and always been good. But last night it was awful, So much so, we threw most of it in the bin. Fish was dry and the batter rock hard. The chips should have been fresh as the place was busy, but they had been over cooked as well. The only change I could see was the cooks had changed. Please please bring back the original cook, fairly tall chap with glasses. His food is excellent. If this is the standard now, we won't be back.

They have a good deal every month - Buy one meal of fish and chips and get the other one free. Chips are very nice but there can be a lack of fish but on the whole they are very nice. We go there quite regularly. They also have a loyalty card.

Took advantage of a BOGOF voucher for a first-time try of Harlees. Was a little wary due to some of the poor reviews but was pleasantly surprised.Fish wasn't massive, but batter was crispy and not too fatty. At least it wasn't a uniform triangular shape as you can get in some places! Chips did have a kind of chewy texture and didn't seem to be that fresh but did not taste bad.I would go back again.

Worst fish and chips ever! Hardly any fish 90% batter, scraps of chips. Too much salt added. Buy on get one free!!! You'd have to pay me to eat there again.

Great fish and chips, excellent serving and waitress staff. My friend is a vegetarian but will eat fish, and we come up from Southampton for the day and have made Harlees our regular lunch restaurant. We look forward to dining with you again. Well done and thank you to everyone at Harlees

Have had chips from Harlees now on several occasions and can honestly say it's worth the 3 mile trip to have them.

So far I've waited 55 minutes for battered sausage and chips x2. This really is not good enough for food that is supposed to be quick. There are still at least 4 more orders before us.

Amazingly cooked fish and chips by far the best in the area . Will return and recommend to anyone. The chips are nothing less than amazing.

Decided not to ,cook, so of off to the chippy I go. We usually go to Harlees as the fish and chips are always so fresh. Well worth a visit.

This is our closest chippy to home so we use it frequently. Unfortunately the meals can be good or bad and there seems to be no consistency. I find the portions to be great but the fish just isn't tasty enough and is very bland. We always get a kids meal which is probably the best value for money as the rest of the meals are quite expensive.

We felt like fish and chips for lunch. So I went to our usual chippy. The fish we ordered was put into the fryer as we arrived. But I think it must have been left in to long, as when we got home to eat it, the batter was hard and the fish very dry. Which was a shame as it's usually very good.

W e have had a number of meals from here, all have been great. Except for this one. Chips were over cooked and hard. It was early evening so I am guessing that they had been reheated from the lunch time trade. Which ever, not very nice at all. We threw the chips away and, just had the fish ith some peas.

It was truly terrible. Freshly cooked large cod. Dry, burnt batter, uniform shape!!! And not large. I'm not going through the rest of the order but no one was pleased especially as it had been recommended. All tasteless

We have had good meals from here 2 times I think, the rest of the time it has been disappointing to terrible. All orders are supposedly cooked fresh and you will be made to wait even if you only want chips. More than once the already small looking piece of fish has turned out to be mostly hard inedible batter with a tiny morsel of hard overcooked cod inside.

Just moved to Amsebury this was our first visit ordered med cod and chips twice it was a waste of money and will not be going there again, the chips were hard and black and the fish was thin and tasteless, worst fish and chips i have ever tasted.

We often get our Friday night supper from here. The food and service are first class. In our opinion, the best chippy in town.

My partner just came back from the chip shop with mini chicken and scraps twice and a mini mini kids portion of sausage and scraps and 2 half frozen bread rolls, I rang the chippy up to complain and all the girl said was yeah, so disgusting wish I had went to the other chippy round the corner where I normally go really disappointed

Shame that you can ruin an easy to cook meal. Chips were cold and soggy and the fish was cold and mushy. Even my son couldn't eat it. I only live 1 minute walk away so it should have been at least warm. Don't waste your money,

The food has always been ok but the waiting time is awful I tried to call at 5 to order in advance but they never answeredOne lunchtime there was just one person working there!! Couldn't even get a bag of chips in my 1/2 hour lunch break

We were regular to this place but would rather travel, consistently not good, greasy fish and tough chips, really disappointing, won't be using again.

We decided to have fish and chips for our meal last night. So I went to Harlees at Archers Gate. Plenty of parking space. The fish and chips were great, freshly cooked and very tasty. Well worth a visit.

Since they changed the management and team in here it has got worse. Wait's of 35 and 45 minutes for Haddock & Chips is ridiculous. Wrote an email of complaint and was basically told they needed proof. The senior management need to visit the shop and watch the team in here.

OK food - all a little slow as cooked to order and no option to shout an advance order while waiting to pay. Not as good as other Harlees encountered.

We had a take away from here recently. We have had take away's form here before, and they are always very good.

There is always a long wait in this shop, but today was really poor. When I mentioned this they said there was something wrong with the machinery- would have been nice if they'd mentioned that when they took the order. The chips were also terrible. All stuck together and really fatty. Mm- it's gone downhill!

Lovely fresh chips, cooked just right, crispy outer and nice soft inners. The haddock was good too. Pies are not too good though.

Please, stop putting so much salt on the food. It doesn't make it warmer nor does it make it taste better. How can every other chip shop get it right ?

Usually go here once a week, but yesterday evening the batter on the fish was awful being dry and tasteless and there was hardly any fish under the batter. Will look elsewhere in the future I think.

The food is not bad , however waiting 22 minutes for a large and small chips is beyond reasonable. Every time I seem to visit this place my hair has grown 3 inches due to the amount of time spent waiting. This is certainly not a quick stop on way home for chips. I keep getting drawn back to this place for convenience, however I figured a drive into town is quicker by around 10 to 15 minutes LOL.
