We have been regular visitors to Hargreaves prior to Covid, it's our favourite eatery in Buxton and always look forward to our visit. We visited yesterday and what a disappointment. What was once an " Edwardian " tea room , now looks more like a works canteen. My favourite colour is green, but the plain painted walls in a drab olive colour just doesn't work especially with no prints to break it up. Tableclothes seem to have disappeared and the lighting looks awful. Oh and they have fallen into the trap of PC "Unisex" loos. Having said all that, the food was very good and the staff/service efficient and friendly. Sorry, these, I know, are difficult times and it is all a matter of personal taste, just not to ours. I wish them well but we will now have to seek out pasture new.

I appreciate times are different with Covid-19, but I remember this cafe fondly from my childhood. Visited with my elderly mum and we both chose the chicken, bacon and Stilton salad. What I received certainly wasn’t what I was expecting: a plate of undressed salad leaves with cold chicken and bacon straight from the fridge. No salad dressing was offered and we had to to ask for it. Certainly not worth the money. Thankfully the tea was good.

After visiting the beautiful shop I decided to try the cafe upstairs, I hadn’t been in for many years and it has totally been transformed, it was immaculately clean with a great choice of cakes and light bites the staff were super friendly, (especially the gentlemen who came out to check everything was ok) all staff Wore masks and cleaned up after people as soon as they left. I will be returning with my family soon for some more of the delicious Welsh rarebit.

Popped into the shop and then the tea rooms for some lunch and cake with my family (kids 2 & 5). We will definitely be returning soon and I would recommend to anyone visiting Buxton.Adam

Unlike the other better-known cafes and tea shops in Buxton, Hargreaves has time for you and can offer a broad menu and excellent range of tea with excellent attentive service. Excellent Rose and Mint teas, good panini and excellent Welsh rarebit. A good range of soft drinks too. Again unlike other establishments, Hargreaves also take Covid-19 precautions seriously and take care to ensure cleanliness everywhere in the establishment. There is also a very good range of soaps and batterie de cuisine on the ground floor, and elegant pottery in the dining room.

I visited the cafe with family to celebrate my Dad’s 80th birthday. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We sat in elegant historical surroundings, with good social distancing in place. My Chicken, Bacon and Avocado Salad was delicious and the ideal meal for a sunny day in Buxton. The menu has a good mix of choice and size to suit various appetites and scrumptious desserts, well tested by our group! While you relax in the dining room, the showcases with antiques and historical items give the diner plenty to look at. Well worth a visit and a browse around the cook and gift shop on your departure.

Called in for a spot of lunch. We both had a hot bap and shared a portion of chips. My wife had the pork and stuffing and I had the bacon, brie and cranberry. "Extremely tasty" we both agreed. My wife finished with a wedge of apple pie and custard which she said tasted "like apple pie and custard should do". So full marks for the food and service. The only problem for me, being a bloke of largish proportions, was that the seating was a little cramped. But I'd be prepared to be cramped again 'cos the food was so good.

As you walk upstairs past the modern kitchen and gift shop you really are walking upwards, but backwards in time. The Edwardian tea shop could very well be from that era. Stacked display cases of porcelain collectibles in the dining room. You'll get a nice cup of tea here and great cakes and scones. Sandwiches pretty good too. Gets quite crowded but the staff work very hard and get everything out in very good time. A very authentic experience.

In a world increasingly populated by chain outlet anonymity (Costa, Nero etc etc) it's always a delight to come across a one-off, locally run and unchanged by time venue.Upstairs above a gift shop this is a tearoom Tardis - crammed with antiquities (and I don't mean the staff!), full of history, tradition and useful notes about its heritage. Even the display cabinets are a delight in themselves.Plenty of cakes and snacks on offer, sandwiches and usual café fare - all served pleasantly in what is a quite other worldly atmosphere. Take a step back in time and a step away from the crowded streets outside. Oh, yes, the coffee's not bad either!

As part of the day where we met long term friends, we chose this cafe as a lunch venue. We had been into the ceramics shop below before but had not noticed the cafe upstairs until shown to us today.Up the staircase, where carpet needs updating or cleaning, we came to a lovely, bright and attractive counter. Further into the cafe, we found a table for four. So many tables seem to be crammed in that back to back chairs unavoidably push against one another when sat on.A good menu (albeit without hot lunches at the current time - all appropriately explained at each table) is found, with orders taken at the counter. Lots of good food seemed to be on offer, sandwiches, toasties, jacket potatoes, salads and vegan meals. The list of vegan / VG items is impressive.Once ordered, food arrives quickly. The salad with ham and blue cheese I ordered did look delicious and came with a good dressing. Working through the meal, I did find the ham salty and very watery at the bottom of the dish of lettuce. This meal had cost £7.50. Husband's roast pork sandwich was apparently wonderful.Decor is fascinating but overpowering. The same large Morrisesque print wallpaper was on each wall. Large bevelled mirrors on one wall extend the impression. Vintage display cabinets on two sides of the room house famous brands of pottery, china and ceramic. Some of these are fascinating. Could some detail surrounding them be displayed?Stairs seem to be the only access to the tea rooms; toilets on the landing are dated. Cubicles in the ladies' are as small as they could be. We may go again, but with Buxton having so many eateries in such a small area, competition is high.

We have visited this café a few times over a longish period. It has never been less than good but it can sometimes be very busy and too busy for our preferences. Just recently we have called in twice, towards the end of the day when it has been quieter, and thoroughly enjoyed our visits. The café offers a delightful menu, mixing the mundane tried and tested plus a few surprises and posing some difficulties in deciding what to have. On our last visit I chose from the tried and tested (scone and butter) whilst my wife opted for the toasted pumpkin loaf – both were good, the latter being surprisingly light and offering an excellent afternoon nibble. We like the style of the café, the staff are pleasantly normal, the product is good and the prices very competitive, and despite calling in late in the day the service received does not reflect this.

Visited Buxton for a day out and decided to have tea sandwich etc. Main shopping street was uncomfortable with cheap charity shops, beggars and loud mouthed teenagers. The cafes I saw were the tipical greasy run down . I then found Hargreaves Edwardian Tea Rooms and it made up for all the other failings. The tea rooms were clean, well laid out and the decor created a lovely ambience. It would have been nice to have table service but going to the counter was not too much of an inconvenience. The tea served in a tea pot and the bacon bat could have not been any better. The scones were so nice that we purchased another two to take home. Now I have discovered the tea rooms I will certainly re visit for lunch.

Not many tearooms can boast freshly ground Italian coffee served with Oatley [oat milk] and a selection of vegan tray bakes - but this is one can! We also had red onion houmus and sun dried tomato toasties on brown with salad garnish which was very nice. However this wasn't just a visit to a tearoom, it was like a local history tour too as there are interesting displays of historic photos and artifacts detailing the companies history going back 4 generations. Still a family run business today, the young lady with the dreamy eyes had all the time in the world to discuss her proud heritage with me and made me feel that the customer is the most important asset to her business. Contrary some of the other reviews I found all the staff to be friendly and the service courteous as well as the food being fresh. Also that the layout would not lend itself well to waitress services as I think this would cause too many collisions when the tearoom gets busy. All in all I had an interesting and pleasant experience which has stayed in my mind long after returning home and hence contributing this review!

We visited for afternoon tea for two at £25 which was a treat for my mum after looking after me during treatment for Cancer. Where do I start, well the tea room looked quite nice and quirky from the outside, you go through a lovely little shop up some stairs. I was expected to be greeted by someone asking how many are dining but I had to go up to the till and request the afternoon tea. The lady told us to go and find a seat then come back for the drinks. Now this is the only tea room I know of that you have to carry your own teapot/cups/milk/hot water back from the till area myself, bearing in mind I'd just had a major operation for cancer and was having to juggle a teapot, 2 cups then return back for the remaining milk and hot water. The team was really weak and I had to prod the teabag with a spoon, the teapot also had a big chip in it. Now to me a tea room should have China teacups and a pretty teapots but this had plain white crockery, nothing Edwardian at all. We sat near the window which had a crack in it and the tables are too crowded together. I can't believe I had to go up to retrieve my own cutlery, sugar and napkins from a box near the till now I don't know about anyone else but for £25 I expect the cutlery to be on the tables. Next a waitress arrived with a 2 tier consisting of houmous sandwich (yes you heard right it was plain houmous on white basic bread) egg mayonnaise with No cress, lumps of ham on processed bread and soggy tuna, all on cheap processed bread. The scones were dry and unappealing, we had the tiniest profiterole and a slice of dry Victoria sponge. It's a shame as it's a lovely place but the self service and unimaginative tasteless food let it down. I visit a few tea rooms and this definitely can't be classed as one. The people who rate higher must be easily pleased or have more money than sense. Won't be returning back again

Came here after receiving no service at another cafe nearby. Great atmosphere and decoration, friendly service and good coffee and cakes.

Called in here for tea and cake having been ignored in a couple of other places. Beautifully decorated tea rooms on the first floor with huge display cabinets filled with chinaware. Lots to look at and admire! Friendly staff. We had two coffees, a piece of lemon and raspberry cake and a piece of Bakewell tart. Both delicious. Well worth a visit.

Lovely quaint tearoom with vintage china and ornaments displayed around the room. We didn't expect the size portions we received, and had a very pleasant surprise at the value for money. While we ordered salads, which made for a filling lunch, other tables around were enjoying the afternoon tea, which looked very substantial for the price. Would definitely recommend.

My cousin and I stopped here for a light lunch thinking we would have dinner at our hotel in the evening. We both opted for the Ham Hock and Blue Cheese salad - not quite as light as we would have expected - it came in a bowl that was overflowing with enough ham for at least two people plus a side dish of coleslaw and a bread roll with butter - it was delicious and took a long time to make an impresion on. It is a quant little restaurant upstairs from a cookshop - another favourite. There is plenty to see in the family cabinets too. By the time we got to the end of the salad we realised dinner was not going to be required so we sampled the apple and rhubarb crumble with ice cream - yummy. A real hidden treasure.

We fund this wonderful little tea room walking along, at Buxton. Entering a shop full of interesting goodies, the tea room is upstairs. It has a sort of mini museum for you to gaze at as you eat and drink, and a window view if you wish.

We made two visits to these lovely Tea Rooms during our stay. Beautiful quaint atmosphere. Lovely, pleasant and helpful staff. Wonderful choice on the Menu with amazing food with a home cooked taste and quality. A little disappointed that the original "Small "Breakfast seems to have been replaced with a "Budget" Breakfast with less choice. I am sure I had Fried Bread last time. Nevertheless really enjoyed our whole experiences. Wonderful English Tea to drink.

This tea room as such history attached, it looks exactly like a Edwardian tea would have looked, display cabinets show a history of Hargreaves family in the UK. Great selection on the menu whether its lunch or afternoon teas, there was a also a good selection of cakes. The tea room is above a above a shop in the main street so make sure you don't miss it.

It had started raining when we left the shopping arcade so we ran to Hargreaves as I wanted to look at the candles in the shop. My husband suggested we should get a drink and cake upstairs. I loved the decor. We both had a very yummy bakewell tart. He had a pot of tea and I was naughty as last day before new diet and had a retro banana split milkshake this was also very yummy and it was reasonably priced too. Will return next year.

Passing through Buxton, we stopped for a 'cuppa' and chanced on these lovely old fashioned tea rooms. Upstairs over a gift shop, the tea rooms are like stepping back into Edwardian times. The rooms are decorated with period furniture and china and the food was delightful. The menu includes a good selection of cakes and scones as well as light lunches and the staff were very friendly and obliging. A real find!

What a lovely little gem of a tea room! As a fairly good cook (!) I can honestly say the scones were undoubtedly the best we have ever had. Wonderful.

The tea room was on the first floor above the shop. We went there on Saturday afternoon after lunch time but we still needed to wait for a table so it must be popular. Good value for money for their afternoon tea set. Staff were friendly and helpful. Better than the normal high street chains.

We’d just had a doctor’s appointment and were looking for some late lunch at around 3pm on a weekday (Thursday). The staff were not actively unpleasant, but they surely were not friendly either- the level of service and welcome is much less than the other coffee shops in Glossop. We had the potato hash, which was very, very fatty - the hash is made of mince and usually ok, but this was very meat-heavy with very few veg, and it tasted overwhelmingly of liquid fat in the gravy. Having enjoyed it before, several times, this was diabolical - we’ll not be back. Especially as the food hygiene score has now fallen (currently a ‘4’). The service now became quite surly. By 4pm the staff lined up, clearly ready to go home. When asked, very nicely ‘are we keeping you from going home?’, they actually just said ‘yes’. No smile, no mitigation, no explanation, just ‘yes’. We drank our tea, paid, and left. There once was no competition in Glossop. Now there’s a lot, and that competition is friendlier, more welcoming, and- to be honest - seems cleaner also. And their food is now better also. We shan’t be back. This cafe does not deserve our business. I work really hard for that money and it can be better spent elsewhere.

Just popped in for a bite of lunch. The two bar staff were very welcoming. Nice selection of beers/ales on tap, and a good selection of alcohol-free bottled beers. Good selection of dishes on the menu. My wife and I each ordered one of the sausage and mash dishes. Got a choice of types of sausages, types of mashed spuds, and type of gravy. Food was delivered quite quickly and was absolutely delicious. Was a great pub to find and I would not hesitate to visit again next time we are back in the area.

Overpriced, underwhelming food. Portion sizes were appealing for the price. I won't eat here again. The quality was poor too.
