We’ve eaten here three times in a week whilst staying in a holiday home in Sway. Cannot fault the food or the service. All meals have been piping hot, good sized portions, really good value for money, and we’ve enjoyed all our meals. Thank you. Very dog friendly, the pub provides blankets and beds for your pooch. Will definitely return if we’re down this way in the future.

I have eaten at this pub several times and unfortunately todays roast was terrible. I had the trio, beef tough as old boots, tasteless pork with unsalted crackling and the turkey was formed meat. Rubber roast potatoes, veg was very nice and gravy just about ok. A real shame as the staff are so friendly and welcoming. Just need a shake up in the kitchen I am afraid. I think my roast was roughly £14:50 hate to say it but Toby’s is much better and that’s a real shame as I love to support local businesses.

We took some visiting relatives for a forest walk and Sunday roast. We had pre-booked a table. The food was very disappointing - we were booked for 2pm and I feel that the food had been cooked long before our arrival. One family member is coeliac, and they brought her stuffing and gravy with gluten in. Luckily I asked the waiter to double-check, and not trusting their knowledge, went to find the kitchen to ask the chef... Didn't want to make a fuss and spoil a family event, but would not go back, particularly with dietary requirements. Young staff didn't know the menu, and didn't defer to those in charge.

Rang to enquire if we there was any chance of Sunday lunch at 3pm and reserved a table for 4pm, which was such a relief as we’d been let down by the original establishment we’d booked at and it was for a special occasion. Arrived at 4pm and every table was full, the atmosphere was great and the staff very friendly and attentive. Service was great. We all ordered the Sunday Roast. Good choice of variety of different meats including a combo. It was delicious, perfectly cooked, good portion and worth every penny. Fully recommend, have visited before and will again.

Popped in for a late Sunday lunch. Warm welcome. Best Sunday lunch I’ve had in a pub in ages and definitely the best around this area as I’ve tried quite a few and there are some shockers. Excellent fast friendly service, roast dinner tasted very home cooked and generous portions . The only downside was I had too much to eat as I had a pudding which was also very good. I live local and will definitely be making this a regular for Sunday lunch. Cost for two drinks two meals and a pud was roughly £36 and was worth it. Well done 😀

Decided to come here as I had heard good reviews about it. Wish I hadn't. The pub looks really great and the cosiness extends inside. What a pity that the food isn't up to scratch. My starter of pate was a grey mass on a plate. The chilli con carne looked like pureed meat and resembled dog food. My fish pie was done in a creamy leek sauce but unfortunately the chef had not washed the leek sufficiently so every mouthful was gritty - extremely unappetising. Yes, we could have complained, but we were with friends and this always spoils an evening and on second count, washing a leek, which every cook knows comes in layers, is basic cookery skills, so no excuse. May pop in for a drink if I am that way with the dogs but will not be eating here again.

My wife and are vegetarian whereas my 2 children are meat eaters. It’s always been difficult to find a pub in the new forest that offers a varied and decent vegetarian menu not just lasagne, jacket potatoes or Vegi burger. The meat dishes on the menu are never a problem for my children. The Hare and Hounds offered a few additional vegetarian dishes on the menu that sounded, looked and tasted yummy. The starters, mains and desert portions are of a very good size so make sure you go very hungry. The food is freshly cooked, piping hot and very flavoursome. The staff are friendly and always had a smile and the young lady made good conversation with us.The tables around the bar area are pretty close to each other and trying to get to the rest rooms can be a mission. We were simply passing on the way home and having decided to eat on the way were heading elsewhere but saw this roadside and simply turned round and stopped as for some reason we had never tried it before. The pub itself is fine, nice garden and the staff were welcoming. The menu is basic pub grub but it has a reasonable choice on it and, to be fair, not at all over priced. I had a Chili Burger which was fine (as in the burger itself was) clearly homemade and quite tasty actually but simple things let meals down sometimes don't they with the jalapenos obviously out of a jar as the vinegar like taste overwhelmed it, but once scraped off the burger was nice. The chips accompanying were just barely warm and I'm guessing had been sitting under a lamp waiting for the burger. My wife's crusted rump steak from the specials was cooked just right but ditto on the chips. So there you go it was fine, nothing to really moan about but nothing to rave about or motivate us to come back either. But not an unpleasant hour, nice pub and a lovely beer garden. Nice to see dogs welcome

On arrival we received a pleasant reception and our order was taken quite quickly. As we couldn't find a starter that either of us liked we ordered our main courses with the intention of finishing with a desert. The pub was only 20% full but we still had to wait 40 minutes for one liver & bacon together with mash & vegetables & one chicken pie, mash & vegetables. The food was freshly cooked & first class but no warning was given that there may be a slight delay with our main courses. During our meal at no time did anyone check to see if everything was alright or did we want anything else, presumably because the two people behind the empty bar were too busy wrapping cutlery with serviettes in between the infrequent meals coming out of the kitchen. As we had waited so long for our main meals we decided not to have a desert and when I paid the bill I wasn't asked if we enjoyed our meals. This is a nice pub with super meals but the staff should practice their customer service skills.

Place is very dog friendly, so much so that the tables had dog treats on!. We skipped starter and we straight to main. My wife had liver and bacon, I went for a steak. Well prepared and not to long to wait. My steak was slightly over done for a medium rare, but this was a minor thing. Puddings massive, homemade, very nice. Went here for a birthday meal 2 days after Christmas with my daughter. (My husband had passed away on the Monday, he always brought me here for my birthday and she was trying to make the day as good as it could be). Such an awful time. There was another couple and a family party there already - otherwise it was empty. The staff seemed to have sloped into post Christmas fatigue and really couldn't be bothered, I had to ask for someone to come and take our order for drinks and food. I then had to ask for our plates to be cleared and then asked for the dessert menu (Which just resulted in a blackboard being dumped on the floor as a waitress walked past). During our meal, a large party arrived who I can only assume are known as big tippers because all of a sudden the staff couldn't do enough for them - at the expense of everyone else in the restaurant. Another party even arrived, waited at the door, got ignored by 2 girls and walked out and another group just walked in and sat themselves after waiting for some time, to be looked at like something the waitress had scraped off her shoe! Maybe we came on a bad day but it took us over 2 hours to have a drink, main and dessert - due to the lengthy wait between each part of our meal and then we had to wait over 30 minutes to get our bill! They are lucky we didn't just walk out - they probably wouldn't have noticed to be honest. We felt most unwelcome and sadly, we didn't leave a tip on this occasion because the service did not warrant it.The food in general was lovely when we did eventually receive it (Although after asking for no salad or coleslaw, I had to ask for mine to be re-plated when it arrived with yes, you guessed it, salad and coleslaw. Maybe the waitress had an ear infection and couldn't hear me?) and dessert, after asking for descriptions of the dishes - something the blackboard could do with if the staff don't want to stick around to talk you through it (What flavour is the cheesecake? What fruit is in the crumble? Are there nuts in the brownies? Does that come with ice cream or cream? etc...) was very nice and I am sure that on a different occasion, we would have had a very different experience but on what was already a very difficult day - the Hare & Hounds let us down.

Love the 'old style' pub makes me feel very welcome with the fire place but.... the staff need cheering up! Every time iv been I feel like there understaffed. Had the 'chicken curry' which tasted like a microwave meal but my partners food was lovely as I had a bit of his. I also got a desert which was £6-£7 and all I got was ice cream with toffee sauce and a few nuts! Disappointed in that as I was expecting something of higher standard. We booked a table for Sunday lunch at mid-day, and arrived to a largely empty pub. After ordering, we sat back and waited... for around 40-45 minutes. We'd ordered fairly standard fare: chilli con carne, lasagne, spaghetti bolognese, and a vegetarian burger - nothing fancy. When the food finally arrived it was very tasty, and was clearly home-cooked rather than heated up. But it was a bit slow. I can only assume that those ordering at 12:30 and later would have had an even longer wait. In summary, decent pub food, but not recommended if you're in a rush.

Live in Bransgore wanted to try another pub so off we went to The Hare & Hounds Sway.Correct it's not a gastro pub far from it,we had what they called a special: Chargrilled chicken with a salad the chicken was cooked well but the salad consisted of some brown wilted lettuce with a few leaves of rocket and some sundried tomato, no presentation skills what so ever for close to £12 per meal very disappointing.

Wanted an old school pub that wasn't too gastrofied and this fits the bill. Food is varied and great. They are always busy at weekends so if you can't get a table for food they will seat you in bar area (about the only difference is a candle on the table).Very enjoyable

None of your gentrified gastro pub rubbish here: this is a good honest pub which serves excellent beer (Ringwood Best, naturally) and proper food: liver and bacon for me and steak pie for my wife, both of which were delicious. Excellent value for money, nice location on the edge of Sway and really friendly staff. Go there!

Visited here 05/04/14 with my gf,Knew as soon as we walked in this was the cosy country pub we were looking for.Open fire & very comfy sofas with a very welcoming atmosphere.I had the whitebait starter & my gf had the chilli nachos.Very generous portions & very tasty.I had the chicken curry main & my gf had the cheeseburger. The curry was cooked to perfection & full of flavour & the burger was so tender it just fell apart when cut unlike other places we've been where the burgers are like bike tyres!!..Staff were very chatty, welcoming & helpful looking after our every need.Bill for the 2 of us was about £40 including drinks. We had a really lovely evening & will definitely become regulars..

Having lost our car in the recent storms we made several visits here whilst visiting the garage opposite. The pub is warm, cosy and welcoming with friendly staff. It's essentially pub grub but very well cooked and presented and our various meals; shepherds pie; pasta; chilli etc etc were all very good. There is good selection of wines, beers and ciders and they are dog friendly. A great place to visit after a country walk

We loved this little pub. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The beer garden is a lovely little sun trap where we could easily spend hours. We didn't eat, but the menu looked good. I would really recommend, especially if you are doing a New Forest walk as we were.

The Hare and Hounds is our local, and I suspect we've eaten there more than most who post a review. It's a great pub. Pretty outside, comfy atmosphere inside, and super hosts and staff. Good choice of beers, good value wine, and great pub grub. Highly recommended.

Came to this pub for lunch after a long walk in the forest with our dog, we both opted for the burger as it was quick and easy for a cold day before returning home, top quality pub grub, service was good although the one barman was a bit swamped as he seemed to be on his own behind the bar (we did visit in the afternoon however) overall very enjoyable lunch and very accommodating to pooch.

Popped in here on the way back from visiting friends in nearby Wootton.Easy to find on the road leaving Sway to Brockenhurst.Plenty of parking adjacent to the pub.Great buzz on entry and nice welcome from the bar staff. We ordered our drinks and meals at the bar and then chose a table. Various places off the bar area to sit. Some private.Very rustic interior with low beamed ceiling. Lovely traditional feel.Loads of locals so we took this as a good sign.Good selection of draught beers as you would expect and some guest beers too. I suspect you could spend a full day here trying everyone and still leave missing a few.My wife and I chose a curry and chilli con carne to eat. This arrive 15 minutes after we ordered and both were piping hot - plates too. Plenty on the plate and tasty.Thoroughly enjoyed of meals and felt that our food and drinks were well priced - unlike some gastropubs that charge £4-5 more per meal for the same basic food. Will visit again and a big thank you to everyone at the Hare and Hounds.

Nice lunch in this pleasant country pub. Real fire and good decor. Dogs allowed in the bar but not the restaurant, which may be good or bad depending on you attitude to pets.

Truly awful - and no suitable toilets. The food we were served was below average, the coffees were unfortunately not good at all. The service from the woman running the cafe was disgraceful. She seemed off from the outset, and was downright rude in the end after one of our group was reduced to tears by her behaviour. Most importantly the toilet was not suitable for visitors to use, you have to squeeze through the kitchen which is open to the seating area to get to the toilet, which is extremely close to where food is being prepared and completely inaccessible for anyone with mobility issues. The toilet door did not shut, so the woman who runs the cafe had to slam shut another door in order for there to be any privacy (and any level of hygiene), which then resulted in one of our party being trapped inside the toilet unable to get out. When another member of our party was eventually able to force the door open from the outside and the person who was trapped was understandably shaken at the experience, the women running the cafe had the nerve to tell her to calm down, and then denied having said anything at all. All in all it was a horrendous experience, no redeeming features - this unfortunate situation could have been helped with a kind manner but instead was made much worse. Avoid. We will be making a formal complaint to the food standards agency. A bizarre and upsetting experience!

En route back from Southampton we broke our train journey home @ Brockenhurst and dropped into the Forresters for a couple of drinks - Saturday evening husell and bussel - a busy local with atmosphere - great for a drink and being near to station was really handy.
