Went on Sunday to sample the menu to be told they only had burgers or roast dinner! Was served a bottle of white wine which was put on the table with no wine cooler and 2 dirty glasses which the waitress begrudgingly changed. Service was very slow, another table had food brought out by someone who I believe is the new chef in clothes that were covered in paint! We wasn't asked about desserts or more drinks at anytime and the atmosphere was poor. Food on arrival was OK but will not be returning due to the ambiance and miserable staff .

We were invited to a funeral Reception to celebrate someone's life passing. The newly returned restaurant room was really nicely done, with bi-folding doors full length of the room and very tastefully decorated. We had a choice of two home made plate pies, cheese and onion and meat and potato. The cheese and onion was really tasty, with nice lumps of cheese and pieces of onion. The wife had the meat and potato and she said it was lovely with big chucks of steak. Also either mushy peas or baked beans and a selection of pickled beatroot or red cabbage. All in all a really nice send off with good home cooked food. And the bear was nice too.

Twice me and my 4 year old daughter has come to this pub! Once last Sunday understood that they were busy so we got a drink and waited to see if a table came available! Not once did any staff come up to us to be polite and advice a waiting time completely ignored. However gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought we would try and again. This afternoon came in no one hardly in one couple and a family of three. We sat down asked for a menu and staff just said no fully booked. So we left I called up and asked if I could have a table was told we can have one at 2:30pm without saying how many and it was literally. This was in half an hour. So I don't know how they can refuse us but book someone without knowing how many people half hour later! I actually felt not welcome at all and I have no idea what me and my four year old has done. Craven Hiefer is the way forward! Will never step foot in here again.

Had a great meal at the Hare and Hounds, took my mum too. Fabulous food and ate in the newly decorated dining room with the fabulous views. Popped in on a Saturday afternoon as was staying in the area. Warmly greeted by the bar staff who then took our order, set us up a tab and informed us of food options. We had a couple of baguettes which were really nice, very generous portions. The beer was also good quality. Bar staff were excellent, really looked after us and made us feel welcome. Everything was reasonably priced as well. All in all a really nice place to eat and have a beer, highly recommend.

Been several times with no issue. This time we sat on a table and decided to move as it was reasonably quiet and nobody had yet greeted us. Sat down and waited, nothing, went over the the bar area to be told the usual which is fair enough. Young bar staff took our order (no fault to her, shes always polite) the manager then brought the beers over and said quite loudly that ordering 6 beers between 3 had slowed their team down and that we are incredibly rude. Naturally this got our backs up as we hadnt been explained this and thought we was saving the staff from.another trip to the bar. As we then went over to confront them the female.manager tried to square up to me quite literally. Fortunately the luxury of cameras these days caught a nice chunk. I'll be in touch.

All the tables freshly sanistised and spaced out and each of the tables outside were clearly spaced out with their surrounding areas marked out so you didn’t get too close to anyone. We went on Sunday for a get together. We didn't want to go to a chain pub or restaurant and as my friend said we need to support local businesses lets give it a try. The price was £8 approx for a carver which I thought was a bit pricey but it should be good if they charging this much. I was so wrong, the food was disgusting! You paid for the meal at the bar in exchange you received a raffle ticket, you handed the ticket to the service area were the 'chef' asked which meat you desired, beef and gammon or both were the options. I didn't see any sign of a carvery, she disappeared into the back then returned with the meat on the plate already covered in gravy (hot beef and cold gammon) with a cooked frozen Yorkshire pudding. The vegetables were a joke. Sat in a hot server were cooked tinned peas, roast potatoes from frozen, grey green beans, and cabbage and overcooked carrots and new potatoes. There was no sauces to accompany the meal, the knives and forks were set incorrectly and to top it off the fire alarm kept going off. I will not be returning any time soon believe me!

Despite living in the area and the good reviews on Tripadvisor we had never been to the Hare & Hounds until last Saturday. Stuck for a place to go without booking and not wanting ethnic cooking we thought we'd try our luck.A big car park was sparsely populated with cars but had tremendous views across the countryside. The restaurant is an extension towards the rear of the building and, like the car park, was almost empty. Just six other diners (two tables) meant the atmosphere seemed a bit lacking and the décor and furniture seemed to be stuck in a 30 year (or more) time warp. Not exactly a cheerful place to be but the food served was not only good but very fairly priced. The meat in the steak pie was excellent and my wife's pork with tarragon very enjoyable. Starters were somewhat limited and the presentation of the garlic mushrooms was unusual. All in all we enjoyed our visit but couldn't work out why it was so quiet on a Saturday night at 7.30pm. It can't possibly be the unappealing décor and furniture could it?

This is a gem of a restaurant at the rear of the village pub. We had hoped to go during the week but were told the restaurant was only opened at the weekend but we could have the same food served in the bar. The bar is typically a pub bar and the seating wasn't what we wanted for a family dinner. We booked for the weekend and went with family and friends. We were the first in the restaurant and were greeted by all the staff. The service was excellent and we received as much attention even as the restaurant filled with other diners. The menu offered plenty of choice and everyone was more than happy with their meal.I would suggest better publicity and changing the signage over the restaurant which shows that they are open during the week. The views in summer would be spectacular, for those who do not know the area and think it's all industry and chimneys they would be pleasantly surprised.

Myself and my husband, plus the rest of my family regularly go to the Hare and Hounds and have never been disappointed. We always have a good meal. Its not gastro pub food but its lovely all the same. The menu includes includes a selection of tasty pies, gammon and steaks, sandwiches. My favourite is the peppered chicken and rice! The best pub grub in Burnley! We do tend to sit in the pub part for food and drinks as it is a lot more informal and relaxing than the restaurant at the back (which in my opinion is better suited for a more formal meal out, or if you are in a large group, or want to hire the whole room for a function) In the summer it is a lovely place to sit outside and enjoy the fabulous view of the moors and the countryside surrounding the village of Briercliffe (on the edge of Burnley) We have also been to a few theme nights and always had a great time and really good value for money. We decided to go to the Hare and Hounds after reading "Trip Advisor" reviews. Unfortunately the experience didn't match the high rating it had been given. The restaurant is in a dated extension to the pub and is furnished with cheap furniture. There is little atmosphere and when we visited (Friday evening), there were only 6 diners in total. The food was at best average, I had 1/2 roast duck and my wife had steak and ale pie.The service was fine and the coffee was good but if this is supposed to be one of the best pubs in Burnley to eat, according to your reviewers, I feel concerned for the culinary tastes of the Burnley folk. We wouldn't recommend it to our friends and we won't be going back. Sorry.

Leaving our home in “Salmondland” to visit the Lancashire metropolis of Burnley, we have sometimes found ourselves in the Hare & Hounds. This hostelry commands a prominent position overlooking the valley to the moors beyond and has a secure park for your 'horse'power from where you can enter into the warm and comfortable surroundings. The staff are immediately friendly - eager to serve and offering advice on the excellently kept local beers and food available. The food is always freshly cooked to order from a varied menu to suit all sizes of appetite. The seating is in two rooms - one housing a pool table and dart board – the other a more formal lounge. To the rear is a function suite available for hire - or it is rumoured, for the lucky regulars, for the 'themed nights' held during the year. (Start being a regular now and possibly have an invite to the excellent Hogmanay party - one not to be missed!)In fact, The Hare & Hounds is everything a visitor would like to find in a 'traditional'English pub and it is thanks to Sue and Graham for making it so - wish there were more like them.Haggis Hunter

We have as a family experienced some memorable New Years Eve's in different parts of the world, and at our age there have been quite a few !. Last New Year's eve (2011/112) , on the recommendation of a friend ,we went to the Hare Hounds. It was an exceptional night that we all enjoyed, including close family who travelled down from Scotland to join us.Because of this experience, we again chose to bring in the New Year at the H&H. I thought it would of a similiar high standard to the previous year. I have to say to our amazement,it was even better !!.It was a diamonds and black tie themed dinner dance .We were greeted on our arrival in the main bar by friendly staff serving excellent canapes, followed by the really nice touch of having our photos taken. We were then invited into the beautifully decorated Restaurant for our meal. The food was beautifully cooked with each course, exceptional in its own right. This was enhanced by the service from the friendly and attentive staff, who seemed to anticipate our every need without appearing intrusive. The whole evening was exceptional in the absolutely seamless delivery of a fabulous experience and wonderful start to the New Year. There was a free raffle in which very one seemed to the winner of a quality prize. There followed a disco with everyone including the staff joining in. Much to the delight of our Scottish visitors the disco tunes were interrupted by the stirring sounds by of a piper in full regalia piping in the new year, while we all drank pink champagne. Wonderful !. We then caried on dancing well into the early hours with bacon butties providing furhter sustenance. The level of detail and attention to it, from trilbies for the men, diamonds for the ladies was as impressive as I have seen anyhwerein my travels. This created a fabulous atmosphere in a beautifully dressed venue. I think it says it all when our family from Edinburgh have said there is no where else they would rather spend New years Eve than with Sue,Graham and their exceptional staff .I would on behalf of our family and friends, like to say a very big Thank You , and wish you all a much deserved, Happy and Prosperous New Year. From there we was taken to a beautifully dressed room to start our 7 course meal. Every course was a culinary delight cooked to perfection. We then had a free raffle and the prizes were all quality, and to my delight, I won one. We all joined in the dancing and at midnight the Landlady had got a piper in for piping in the new year with complimentary Pink Champagne. We danced till the early hours and at 02.00 Bacon Sandwiches were brought round to keep us going. I can honestly say it was the best New Year's Eve I've had. The decor, ambience, food, entertainment was top class, even down to the table presentation with trilby hats for the guys and tiaras for the ladies, table runners and crystals poppers and helium balloons. Even the ceiling was cover with baubles and decorations. It really was Fantastic and would highly recommend every side to this traditional pub, with all the trimmings of The Ritz. Amazing!! I look forward to calling in this year for bar snacks and meals in your ala carte restuarant and for your future celebration dinner dances. Well done and thank you for making it so so special. All the best for 2013. Les and Jim Dyson

My partner and I went here for our evening meal whilst the children were at their school disco and we had a few hours spare. The Car park is large so plenty of room and the views are amazing from the back. When we first walked in we did feel a little bit uncomfortable, this is a pub and we seemed to get glared at from the locals, however they soon carried on with their evening pints and chats and once we sat down we were fine. The guy behind the bar and who seved us our food was lovely, very polite and helpful and the food was lovely, very tasty and although it does warn you on the menu that the food is cooked from fresh and may take a while but we did not really notice this, we didnt seem to have to wait for a long time at all and the wait we did have was well worth it. It might not be "posh nosh" but sometimes you just want some tasty simple food and this is excellent for that and very good value for money.

We ate here on a Sunday afternoon in a group of four. The service was good and efficient; the food was good and well priced. The restaurant is a little old fashioned and the food is perhaps a little on the plain side but overall a good restaurant in a very nice location with excellent views and ample parking.

We are local to the Hare and Hounds and therefore go there on a regular basis for a bite to eat. After much consideration we decided to book for our Wedding, catering for 51 in the daytime and an evening reception and buffet. The staff were amazing, nothing was too much trouble....they even set up our decorations so we had little stress. Lewis was an absolute star in working with what we want and what is possible in a compact space. The food was perfect and the whole place is always extremely clean. From the rear of the restaurant there are beautiful far reaching views and a large car park.

Party of 23 booked for 03/03/2012 Saturday night for my husbands 'special birthday'. Staff were so friendly and approachable and nothing was too much trouble for them. We all got our food more or less at the same time so consequently all ate at the same time, The food was well cooked, well presented and piping hot. I and the rest of my family would like to thank all the staff and management and not forgetting the chef for a very enjoyable evening. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone and we will be going back in the not so distant future. Thankyou once again. X

Went to the News Years Eve party and it was great. One thing about the Hare and Hounds is they try to do it right ,no overcrowding and everything spot on.At times they could sell more tickets but they want an occasion and refuse to spoil it by over selling therefore limit the number of tickets.I noticed one bad report on the food but i have always found it of the highest standard, and the only way to show that is to go and have a meal you will not be disappointed.Yes i am a regular up there but they must be good because Xmas day 2012 is already full.

We stopped off at the hare and hounds' heath restaurant on a Saturday evening a couple of weeks before Christmas, this was our first time and had no idea what to expect, we were greeted at the restaurant door by one of the members of staff, who promptly responded to our request for a table of 2 (as we didn't book) and the restaurant was almost full, so we were luck to be shown straight to our table. We were then approached by a young waiter who gave us menu's, explained specials that were on offer and also took a drinks order from us.The drinks arrived and we were left for a couple of minutes to browse the extensive menu.I ordered homemade chicken liver pate to start and steak and ale pie for main, which was recommended to me and I'm glad it was, the beef was tender and juicy and the puff pastry lid was light and crumbly. This was served chips and a seperate helping of vegetables (cauliflower, sprouts and carrots). My wife had the black pudding in wholegrain mustard sauce to start and the chicken and sweet chilli sizzler with rice and chips which was impressively served to her from a piping hot griddle plate. Again she loved every bit of it ! We had to skip dessert as we were both comfortably full with the large portions of main courses, and impressive to see we didn't get charged extra for the chips and vegetables. So to sum up, I couldn't fault the place, not this time or the 3 times we have been since our first visit ! And to top it off, on a clear day, the stunning views can be seen from the whole restaurant through the large patio doors.

I took a colleague in for a quick lunch - he was a visitor from Holland who wanted to visit a typical English pub. We ordered homemade steak pie with veg and chips, and what an embarrassment. First of all it wasn't a pie but some stewed / braised steak and a piece of pastry on the plate but not even on top of the meat. This was accompanied by some mediocre chips and a side dish of boiled / steamed Cauliflower / Broccli/ carrots - not in a sauce nothing only a little water in the bottom of the dish. For the pleasure of these unappetising meals we paid £9.20 each which was just insulting. My guest asked me if that was typical of English bar meals and I had to say no, and apologised. As an end note, one could argue that you can't judge a restaurant by one meal, however we were the only customers in - perhaps that explains a lot!

If you are after a lovely country pub, either with a couple of close friends or as a group, this is definatley a must.My husband and I go to the restaurant at least twice a month. I must admit that my favorite dish is the duck, but because the food is so good, I do go for the specials to see if they can beat it !! (close !)I have now tried almost every dish on their menu, and I cannot fault ANY.The staff are great. The waiter is so helpful and excels at his job, he goes above and beyond to make sure everything is to your liking.I can only advise you all of how fantastic the food is, but you need to try it for yourselves, you WILL NOT be disappointed !!!one last word. . . . . . EXCEPTIONAL !

Let me start by saying the staff were excellent. Now to the meal at the best average the pie crust took some cutting it was a bit on the hard side, the peas were on the cool side and for the chips they looked ok. . Would I rush back, don't think so

Met a friend for lunch. The staff were very welcoming. We both had flat breads which were beautifully presented and very tasty, great value for money. Service was excellent. The only off putting thing was that the fitted seating area desperately needs reupholstering, but I understand that it has only recently been taken over and it takes time to get things how you want them to be.
