Called in today for a couple of drinks only to be over run by barking smelly dogs not a good thing for somewhere that does food the dog owners had no regard for anyone else only there selfish selves it's a shame as the pub does good food but not in that sort of environment it made us leave early as we felt a little bit intimidated by it and we can see it wasn't full oh i wonder why ? The Hare & Hounds is situated on the outskirts of Glossop. It has a large car park with plenty of parking spaces. It's a big pub with plenty of room and tables. It has an outdoor seating area with excellent views. The carpeting looked very old and could do with a good clean or preferably renewing. There was a wide selection of drinks including three hand pulled real ales: Timothy Taylor's Landlord, Robinson's Unicorn and Robinson's Dizzy Blonde. The menu was varied and the food was cooked and presented to a good standard. The bar staff were very friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. The value for money was ok and I would definitely recommend a visit if you're in the area.

I have enjoyed our beautiful pub with its magnificent surroundings for over 50 years. Whether its for meeting a friend for a chat and a coffee or lunch or dinner. I've never had cause for complaint and always found the staff very pleasant and friendly. I can only ever remember one meal I had to return and that was too much garlic! Not keen! In my opinion any problems people have (and twas always thus with any pub) can be sorted by talking, instead of negative feedback. Our gorgeous pub is the only one left in Simmondley and it would be tragic to see it go. Ann Homer

Very disappointed with the food after being recommended to eat here. 3 of us had pie and 3 had fish and chips. Wish I'd had the pie as looked nice. My fish itself was ok but the batter was thick and inedible and very greasy. Chips were greasy and loads of black bits that should definitely not be served.

There were a few mixed reviews so we weren't sure what to expect but had no need to fret. Food was great, I had the steak pie, which was a tad over done but I still enjoyed it very much, the wife had a burger which was also lovely 'cause I nicked some. Desserts were well worth squeezing in, apple crumble and chocolate fudge cake both with custard, yum. Beer was really good, Timothy Taylor and Tetley cask was what I sampled and served at the correct temp as they have a casque mark here.

Had visited on Fri evening a few weeks ago and all was ok so have given 2 extra stars for this visit that deserved non. Monday lunch time and place was deserted but lady said they were serving food. 4 adults inc 2 with severe learning difficulties. Refused to take food order until we were served drinks ... 2 pots of tea and soft drinks. 1 small pot of tea half full and even smaller water jug.. total liquid barely filled the 2 small cups .. tea cups and pots were badly stained Steak and chicken sandwiches with fries ordered when we were eventually allowed to order. (Probably about 15mins into visit) Lady who took order sat behind bar eating crisps and chatting to a friend while we waited another 30 mins getting hypothermia as pub was freezing. I approached bar to ask where food was ...the crisp eating lady who served us said she was manageress .. at same time a gent appeared from kitchen playing with phone said it was thick chicken pieces and would take a while( even full chicken breasts would take less time) I felt like I had walked into a domestic arguement between Mr&Mrs and wasn't prepared to be lied to so offered to pay for the drinks we had and leave the food Blonde haired crisp eating supposed manager flew into a rage refused payment and screamed at us to leave and never come back following us to the door with more shouting. No wonder the place was empty if this is how they treat customers. As said stars above for previous visit where the food was OK and staff were excellent on a busy Friday evening.

The food here is much improved here of late and the pub is always pleasant. A couple of things would make it much better though. First off all, sort the chairs out. Everyone of them is knackered. The upholstery has collapsed and you fall in a hole as soon as you sit down. They are so uncomfortable that you just don’t want to sit in them and eat. Second thing, love the cheese and onion pie, but what on earth is that cheesy water sauce nonsense served with it ? I’ve had the dish three times now and it’s been the same. It’s as thin as water and split. Try dipping a chip in it chef, it comes out covered in split bits and wet and soggy. Every time. Try pouring it on the pie and your plate is swimming in water. It should be creamy and smooth... the dish is good but would be even better with that sorted out. Really like this place and it could earn 5stars, but the little things are spoiling it right now.

Very slow service, no Sunday roasts left by 5.05pm. Chilli and Garlic Prawns rubbery and tasteless and the Salt and Pepper Chicken wings were left as the saltyness and lack of pepper made them inedible. Cheese and Onion Pie was nice, but pastry was well overdone. Cod and chips with skinny fries instead of chunky chips, and very dry mushy peas. All in a very sad disappointing Sunday meal.

We visited the Hare and Hounds with some friends at the weekend. The Menu is not huge and has a few quirks to others, in that there is quite a few starters and mains, where chilli is prominent, so if you are adverse to it, you are somewhat limited. Two of us decided to try a starter, Crab Cakes and Ribs. My ribs, fell off the bone and were tender, however there was a predominant taste of the chilli and not much else, plus I like my ribs to be somewhat sticky and tangy from glazing during cooking, but these were served with no real sauce, but a large amount of chilli and onions. My friend said that the crab cakes, didn't impress, lacking in crab flavour. Mains were average. My Gammon & Eggs was reasonable, but two chose Cheese and Onion Pie and both said it was dry and lacked flavour. The other person had a vegetable lasagne, which they said was nice. Desserts are made on the day and are varied. Cheesecakes of varying flavours, Ice Cream and Hot Puddings. Tow of us went for a hot Brioche/Fruit Bread and Butter type dish, with hot custard, which was very nice, another tried the Ice Cream, which was fine and the final member chose a Cheesecake, but commented that it didn't quite meet what they were expecting. Overall we had a pleasant evening, as the company is always the point, however in this instance, we felt overall, that the food really didn't compliment the evening, positively. Staff were friendly and prompt with the meals and drinks. This is a small pub, with limited seating, so larger parties may find it necessary to book in advance.

Having returned from a short holiday abroad at lunchtime on the Sunday and got home and wondering what to do for a final holiday meal I looked at the Trip Advisor reviews and we decided to go for a meal around 6 pm booking in advance by phone. It turned out to be a great choice. Relaxed atmosphere, professional team who genuinely care for customers and excellent pub food - certainly didn't experience any small portions! Honestly can't believe our experience at the hare and hounds, just awful. Went for my 30th birthday and Mother's Day. Could only have the 3 course Mother's Day menu, no other options at all. Chicken strips starter was seriously burnt, tomato soup was so watery it was like dish water, creme brûlée was completely runny and not set at all, I also pulled out of it what looked like a black cat hair. we were asked what dessert we wanted waitress was very rude about it, we declined as I couldn't have any other desserts due to being gluten free. We waited 1hr 15 mins for the starter to arrive, whole meal too more than 2.5hrs, only us and one other table in. We asked the to bring my 30th birthday cake out that we had brought with us, bits had fallen off it even tho we gave it to them intact, the plates they brought us for the cake were covered in butter, grease and hairs. we asked where the bits were they said oh still in the box, when we got the box back they weren't. At the end they decided to charge us for the dessert that was inedible, they said they had to as its 3 courses and that it was tough, they eventually took a drink off. My husband and nan (who has dementia) were sat at the table as the rest of us were getting ready to leave etc. One of the waitresses came over and starting demanding to my nan that we must leave immediately "right now" as they were very very busy (there were 3 tables full at this point including us" when we asked the waitress when she had spoken to my nan like that she said "well I just thought it was time for you to leave the table as you have been here a long time", we were very upset with the comments made. We then said but you took 1hr 15 mins to bring our starter, she said oh right yeah, then we said that we also had to keep hurrying them along to bring the main and dessert or we would have been there even longer.

Un montón de cerveza de barril y no dudaríamos en volver. . . Tenemos la esperanza. oportunidad. P&J; Donaldson los pueblos de FL.

Over the past 4 weeks we have eaten in The Hare & Hounds 4 times, the first 23 December when 11 of us sat down for dinner. the second on New Years Eve 9 of us and then last week, myself wife and daughter have eaten there twiceUnderstandably with a large party things can sometimes go a little amiss, but not here, on the first visit when we had friends over from USA and the rest family, the food was excellent, the presentation as good if not better than a top Manchester restaurant and the food was superb. Dave & Tracey have a gem in George, the chef. New Years Eve, he excelled even more so, with ever table booked up, the food was excellent and the presentation surpassed the earlier meal, we had friends from USA & Canada with us and they all said it was amongst the best food they had ever tasted. The prices are not expensive, as above the quality is excellent and the presentation not to be missed, the specials are inventive and of such quality you are spoilt for choice.I am glad we are back in Glossop having been in Madrid for 2 1/2 years, as the food is so good, we'll be eating there at least once a week,

Really disappointed after driving from Manchester. I've been to this pub several times and recommended it to friends and family. It now has a new menu and new management (sign up outside stating this). New menu is very poor and all the lovely things that used to be on there seem to have gone. We got fish and chips. It was greasy and the chips were laced with salt. Words can't describe my disappointment as this pub was one of my favs for good food when the lady who ran the kitchen was there. I won't be returning. The staff are lovely though. Such a shame but hey ho. The food is poor so I won't be wasting the 45 minute drive to get there again!!

Enjoyed an excellent lunch at the Hare and Hounds on Sunday, sampling the Christmas menu. We enjoyed duck egg and lamb koftas for starters, and venison steck and pork belly for mains. All beautifully cooked and charmingly served. Good value too! Couldn't fault it.

What a marvellous meal, the chef obviously has talent and it's nice to see he's been given free rein to redesign the menu. The specials board provides some good locally sourced treats. Creamy mushroom pearl barley risotto, perfectly cooked rack of Mettricks' lamb with the most delicious sauce. All in all a wonderful meal, we'll be back!

What a shame this place is up for sale! Some of the best pub food I have ever eaten overlooking the beautiful English countryside! The land lady was lovely and friendly and couldn't do enough for us and we didn't leave a thing on any of the plates! Could not fault this place. Perfect after a long day of walking!

Friendly pub in Simmondley village. Great views and hiking opportunities. After a hard days walk why not enjoy the regions best Stilton-Burger and spoil yourself with one of their creative desserts. And of course a taste pint.

Visited today, Bank holiday Monday, 4 adults 2 children. Had lovely meals, roast beef was yummy, pies excellent, cheesy chicken burger great, kids meals brilliant. Very generous portions and well cooked. The ice cream sundaes were fabulous. Little playground area outside was great for kids as food is cooked to order. Staff were very friendly. A very nice afternoon indeed. Would definitely go again, thank you.

Called at the Hare and Hounds tonight for the first time. Very nice outside space. Friendly staff and customers. Nice restaurant area. Wonderful menu choice, all locally sourced. I would definitely recommend the steak on a hot stone and pay a bit extra for the chunky chips. All well cooked, plentiful and delicious.

Delicious home cooked food in a lovely countryside setting with friendly staff and friendly punters. Cheese & Onion pie is my favourite.

We entered this country pub with our small dog and the barmaid just shouted "no dogs allowed" very rudely without so much as a "sorry". We had had a charming welcome from other pubs in the area, so it's not us, it's them. I understand that some pubs ban dogs in eating areas - but if a pub wants to be a successful restaurant, they should try being polite. To be avoided.

Occasionally my husband and I visit this pub and when we sit down and look at the menu we always say 'why don't we come here more often' then we eat and realise why we don't! The menu sounds so appetizing... the food is not. I ordered what was meant to be a mild and fruity Japanese curry with fish and noodles. It was actually deep fried fish goujons, chip shop curry sauce (I am not kidding!) and extremely dry and lifeless packet noodles. I opted for some of the gourmet chunky chips too (at an extra cost) and they are fancy frozen chips. More disappointing is that the person clearing our plates (the owner) didn't ask me if everything was OK given that I left most of my fish, chips and curry sauce and all of the noodles. The main emphasis is on their homemade desserts and it is evident that this is the forte of the Chef and that cooking the main dishes is not. Its such a shame as it has potential.

What a delight to have a local pub selling 2-3 cask ales, good wine at reasonable prices and great food. With meat bought from a local award winning butcher, cooked superbly and well presented, always specials in addition to an extensive menu, but not so much as to compromise quality. All home made deserts, and a great local atmosphere. We'll be in for dinner next week-end, either with or without the family, always made welcome

Friendly staff, good variety of draught ales, local produce served, well worth a visit.I always look in the dessert cabinet before deciding if to have a starter or not. All desserts are home made and the peanut butter is to die for....In the summer I should imagine when the weather is nice it would be good place to have a run out to.Visited November 2015

Yet again another wonderful family occasion celebrated at hare and hounds simmondley. Delightful home cooked food served by dedicated staff in a pub with a warm atmosphere. Staff keen to accommodate all our dietary requirements, including one vegetarian. Choice of very tasty locally sourced "specials" which change each time we visit. Would strongly recommend this pub/restaurant to anyone who enjoys good food which is far better than standard pub grub. Well worth a visit.

Enjoyed my solitary evening at the Hare and Hounds last week. Mine host was slightly diffident on my arrival but he soon warmed up and was very attentive. I had two of the chef's specials - calamari and duck breast on butternut squash puree. Both were excellent. Service was prompt and courteous. I thought the meal was value for money, was well cooked, pleasantly served and altogether it will be worth returning.

Always feel really disappointed when coming here! Firstly, for a country pub in gorgeous surroundings, fancy not having an area for dogs? That rules out the walkers trade! Secondly, the layout, dining room furniture and No comfy seating area! And finally the food is quite expensive for average pub grub,.. I'm quite happy to pay the extra but I like a good menu.... Average burgers, chips, steak or curry don't really cut it anymore in today's climate! Lastly, the outside area.... You are basically sitting on a car park on a tired looking decking! What a shame.... So promising but what a let down!

In Castleton for a few days walking and called in at this pub for an early evening meal and a couple of beers. Although not busy when I arrived most tables were reserved but staff managed to find me one . All staff very friendly and helpful, as a solo traveller much appreciated . Had a very tasty burger with added stilton cheese , and a couple of pints of an excellent Black Sheep bitter . Well recommended , but very popular so best to reserve a table . Will be back next time in Castleton .
