Food was good, although menu a bit limited. Admittedly the pub was short staffed, but the wait for food was ridiculously slow. We arrived at 12.15, ordered mains pretty much straight away. Although we ordered sweets, by 2pm, couldn't wait any longer for them. Masses of flies in the dining room - perhaps that was why everyone was sitting outside. Not a nice experience as we had wanted to take friends somewhere good. Won't be going ever again. Very disappointed.

Obviously under new management and have been twice but not as enjoyable as when under previous ownership. The service charge is probably ok if you're inside but there's no service if you're outside. They bring your food but that's it. I asked for another drink but was told to order it at the bar. Hopefully things will improve but in the meantime I will try somewhere else. Food was good both times.

BEWARE THE UNSPOKEN UNSPOKEN SERVICE CHARGE!!! Great pub in the countryside and friendly staff. Early evening drink with fish and chips and a Goats cheese salad . Food was great. The disappointment came when ordering and paying at the bar. The price was unexpected, on inquiring, I was told there was a 12.5% charge added... No receipt! Just a request to pay, as you would at a bar in any Pub. Wary of this tactic, be ready to choose to pay this surreptitious charge on a future visit !!!!

Having enjoyed a few hours rambling on the downs, 8 of us stopped here for a (pre booked) Sunday lunch - it was a first time for us (having been recommended) and boy, were we not disappointed. Truely amazing - fron the pub itself, the selection of beers/gins, to the service and wow - the food! Everything was perfect and highly recommended the; Pork belly roast - sublime & crunchy crackling, Roast chicken - succulent with a well flavoured gravy, Venison stew - Rich & very, very tender. A superb pub & *highly* recommended.

Visited on a Saturday lunchtime in mid-January. We had preordered as we were 22 hungry walkers. The pub had arranged the tables so we could sit together. The fires were blazing and we were made to feel very welcome. The bar staff coped well with the many small drinks orders. There was a decent range of ales, lagers and ciders. Our food arrived quickly. I had chosen the pie of the day. I received a chicken, leek and bacon delight. Although being a pie top set on the mash wouldn’t be everyone’s taste, I LOVED it! Several diners ordered desserts and these arrived promptly too. Food payments were also handled with a minimum of fuss.In summary, one of the best pubs I’ve visited with my walking group!

Hadn't been to this pub for several years after (so my partner reminds me) blackballing it for poor food & service. Decided to give it another try as it's a lovely old building in a very nice part of the world. The service was good & the selection different beers and ciders was excellent & not the sort of selection you see in pubs these days, a proper country-pub choice. The food was tasty, portions generous, but essentially "pub grub" and a little pricey, especially for the burger. Experience would have been nicer & a "Four" if the bad-drain smell (or was it the bins?) when sitting outside wasn't wafting over us, we moved indoors & then had to contend with the flies, presumably attracted by the smells outside! Nice after dinner coffee & the desserts looked good from what we could see too. Will definitely come back & try again.

Having enjoyed our meal here last time, thought it would be a good idea to take a couple of close friends for a Sunday evening meal, we arrived early so picked a shaded table outside (very hot) & had drinks. The Sunday menu arrived & at first I was a bit disappointed as I just presumed we could choose from the weekday one (I fancied a steak) but after my tasty fish cake starter came the loveliest Cottage pie I have ever tasted apart from 'our lasses'...... we had all chosen the pie & all agreed hooray for Sunday menu :-)

I had checked the website before booking for Sunday lunch options. It showed a variety of options & when I called, I asked if they had vegetarian & gluten free options, which they said they had.

Thanks to David and his team for a great meal with friends. Nice welcome, couldn't be more helpful. Food all very tasty and well cooked. Salad very fresh. Stunning area to enjoy. If it hadnt rained would have been lovely outside with comfy seating.

Our annual stay in Up Marden, West Sussex for the Goodwood races enabled us to enjoy several visits to the Hare and Hounds. We drank decent ales outside on beautiful evenings before repairing indoors for food. Very good, filling fare after days on the Sussex Downs - ham,egg and chips; burgers; fish and chips. Decent wine list.

Two of us ate here this evening. It's a lovely country pub, not too busy on a Wednesday evening. Service was friendly though not desperately efficient. We ordered vegetarian burgers and ended up with beef. It didn't especially matter though - they were good, as were the crayfish cocktail and soup starters. Sensible prices. We wouldn't be put off from trying it again if we're in the area.

Oh no what has gone wrong. To be fair we didn't complain as we like the staff so much. First weekend we ordered two ham, egg & chips ... instead of home cooked ham sliced we were given slices of charred gammon/ham which were not great with pale and unappetising looking chips, yes we accept they had been very busy but even so, we could have been given an alternative ... the ham, egg and chips is usually gorgeous and a very safe bet.. We thought a one off oh well. This Saturday we ordered two burgers (usually superb from a great chef who just wants to please); this week they weren't juicy, not loose and clearly homemade with love but overcooked, spongy and just horrible. A fantastic setting with a sunny patio, charming staff and a lovely relaxed ambience but we are going to have to find somewhere else as the food should be the main event ... has the usual chef left???

Stopped off here at lunchtime after a 6.5 mile walk through the beautiful countryside. Sat outside and chose Beer battered fish & chips and ham, egg & chips. The food was great and the staff were very attentive and friendly. Water provided for dogs. Definitely recommend.

We went to this pub for lunch. The roads in the village are narrow, so given it was a sunny day we parked in the village (it is free) and walked to the pub.

Went tues 14th may as usually there was a special on, normally Thai curry with a pint £15. Took some friends as they liked Thai curry. When I enquirer about specials was told everything was on menu, queried this and was again told everything on menu. So choose from menu starter and main course. Then choose plum and apple crumble with custard, menu taken but then Barnan came back and told me chef had decided to do crumble with ice-cream I responded that on the menu it said custard, guy reiterated that chef had decided it now came with ice-cream,not what it said on menu. It appears they change things to suit their preferences not the customers. My advice would be to think twice before eating there!!!! Yes

Stopped in here for a lovely Fish and Chips dinner with my 93 year old mum. Food and service was very good. We were there before it got too busy later in the evening, probably about 6 pm. Lovely old building, but very clean and modern indoors. Awesome setting in a small quiet village. Easy going and lots of fun, the food was good too. Would go again. Reasonable.
