As a family of 4 we had a lovely Sunday dinner. Great service, food lovely and value for money, we will definitely go again. We was surprised there was not more people there. Finished off by a lovely walk around Melbourne.

The hosts are both very nice,The buildings have plenty of character. The menu is basic but fairly priced.Parking is good. Two problems arose during the stay. Most importantly was that the shower was not working correctly and was not providing hot water. The hot water at the basin was tepid at best. The shower issue was raised with the proprietor. Surprisingly, even though we were booked for a second night, no offer was made to repair / change rooms / reduce the room charge, not even a complimentary drink. Simply, a "thank you for telling us'. Also the wifi in the room had a very unreliable signalled was virtually unusable. Shame because this is a really lovely location and the owners are nice but these were very genuine issues. No hot water in January! Things go wrong sometimes, that's life but the paying customers concerns should have been addressed.

Awful over priced Sunday lunch. Over cooked roast potatoes, you get mainly boiled new potatoes? 👀 Very very long wait for food. Chicken looked grey & old! Is this place a dog zoo? So many dogs in there and it felt unhygienic. Will never turn for a Sunday lunch with our family! Never ever!

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here with family. The landlady is so friendly and they have made real improvements to the pub since we last visited. Great choice of reasonably priced wines, frequently changing beers and alcohol free options. Bar area very dog friendly but don’t believe they’re allowed in the restaurant area. Sunday lunch took about 40 minutes to arrive but we’ve waited far longer for roasts in other Melbourne pubs on busy Sundays. Chicken and beef were both lovely and served with masses of tasty veg. It’s wasn’t fancy but it was a good quality, tasty, proper pub roast. We’ll certainly return.

Visited here for my birthday meal. From the moment we walked in, we were made to feel very welcome. It's such a lovely, cosy, clean and warm pub with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Tracey is probably the most attentive, relaxed & kindest landlady we have ever met. She really is the most friendly, chatty and all round genuine lady. Her and her partner/ husband made us feel like one of the pub family...it was so nice to feel so welcomed on our 1st ever visit. There was a great selection of starters, mains and desserts to suit every dietary requirement. The restaurant area itself is nicely laid out to make good use of the space but still allow room around each table. The restaurant is kept so very clean and Tracey was so careful to clean well after other dinners had vacated their table. Our food was absolutely delicious & such generous portions. The timing between our 3 courses was perfect and the food was cooked exactly as requested. The food was presented well, served hot, freshly cooked & of good quality. The triple cooked chips where soooo good (hubby ate his and most of mine too 🤣). We would highly recommend the chicken wings starter, the fillet steak main and the homemade desserts of apple crumble and chocolate Brownie fudge cake. The value for money here is exceptional as the prices are very reasonable (especially considering the price of food and fuel). Thank you so much to Tracey, her hubby, the chef and all the other kitchen staff for such a great birthday evening. We Highly recommend eatting here...but do try book in advance as its very popular.

We have always loved this pub and visit it whenever we stay with our son. Tracey and Paul are always so welcoming and treat us like locals! We went for Saturday night dinner to try out their new menu created by their new chef - it was excellent. The nacho starter was amazing - as were the prok scratchings. The steak was perfect and the peppercorn sauce the best we had ever tasted. The Boltmaker beer was delicious as always. Cant recommend this place highly enough. Great Value, Outstanding quality.

Booked a table for 4 on a Saturday evening in this tasteful country pub. We were greeted by friendly and helpful staff who directed us straight to our table, where we received our drinks whilst deciding on our meals. We all elected not to have starters, just a main course, Faggots, Liver & Onions, Fish & Chips and Vegetable Pie, which were all hot, plentiful and tasty, though a little limited on the veg as it was only garden peas. We then had a sweet which again was plentiful, especially the hot crumble & custard which we could recommend. All this at a realistic price as well.

The only fly in the ointment on this visit was the fact they decided to put the iPad on with the rugby ( very loud!) and as my partner said 'If I had know pen we were coming to a sports pub I would not have cone' . What was supposed to be a relaxed catch up with my friends turned into a farce.Very disgusted with the service and attitude of staff. We had to wait a significant period of time to get our order taken which was followed by a long wait for what was average quality. My meal of chicken Kiev was tasty but the plate had been sitting around the hot plate for long enough for the sauce to be welded to the plate. My friends meal was barely lukewarm .The owner was unengaging and frankly rude. We were accused of swearing at a waitress which simply wasn't true, when challenged the owner refused to engage in a discussion about the fact that her waitress had lied to her. Her attitude was astounding and when both of my friends went to find out what the issue was and asked to see the waitress who made the allegation she commented on the amount of wine that we had consumed, implying we were drunk. I had already chosen to ignore rudeness of her husband when we first arrived in the hope that I had misheard him but it was quite clear that they had a problem with both of my friends on of whom happens to be Indian and the other is mixed race. It appears that this was reason enough for the landlady to walk away from my friend when she was very calmly and politely trying to establish exactly what the problem was. This pub is currently up for sale and let's hope that the new owners are more welcoming and offer better service to all who may visit this establishment.

Our party ordered from both. Particular highlights were the fish and chips, rib eye steak, kedgeree and gammon. The desserts were great too with ice cream sundaes and a fondant to die for! Drinks were reasonably priced and a good selection of fine local ales to try.The waitresses were professional and friendly, nothing was too much trouble (we saw them "tested" by other diners and they coped really well). We will definitely return and would recommend (do book though as it gets very busy).

Was interested to read that other people have also found the couple of run this place hostile... Glad the unfriendliness was not reserved just for us and they don't discriminate... The food is reasonable although the menu hasn't changed since they got there. Just really unfriendly to the point we felt uncomfortable. Definitely don't take small children as they won't be welcome! Not the type of people who should be running a pub. A smile would be lovely guys! Cheer up. You are scaring people away.

Despite some of the negative ratings i had to go with my instinct and give it a go. The pub itself has a lot of history attached to it and was very nice inside and out, We were greeted with a cheery smile and nothing was to much trouble for the waitresses. The food was excellent and there was a good choice of hand pulled beers. We didnt see the landlady so cant comment on her attitude.

Good food, lovely waitress but landlord and landlady particularly unwelcoming. We will not be spending our money there again. Maybe they need to go on a training course and demonstrate some customer service!!!!

Nipped in here for a family Sunday dinner.Evening so no Sunday lunch left, food ordered though no menus straight away. Food ordered at the bar to speed it up and order taken.A good 45 mins later possibly an hour, not ideal with small children, it arrived.Only us, 2 tables of four, one serve already and a table of 8. Anyway on arrival partners risotto ok but nothing to write about, my cannelloni pretty dry and tasteless, garlic bread dripping in oil, and salmon ok but no vegetables just potatoes.Generally food much worse than before though note it was a lone wait last time. Not sure what happened but pretty average.

Being a family of four with a dog we regularly go for long walks on a weekend but cant always find somewhere that allows dogs. What a refreshing change it was ti walk in here after a walk at nearby calke abbey and be welcomed with both young children and a dog. We were allowed to eat in the bar area as opposed to the restaurant but the bar was lovely and quiet and we had a large comfortable table with plenty if room for our pooch to lay on the floor next to us. The food was delicious, we all enjoyed our choices thoroughly, they were all homecooked and the desserts were gorgeous too. All the staff were very polite and the service was very good. Befire we left we actually booked to go back on mothers day with my in laws. Can highly recommend.

Good selection on menu. Not too much of a choice that they dont do any of it well but enoughto cover most peoples taste. In addition I am sure that if there were nothing on the menu that took your fancy that they would be happy to oblige with something of your choice, if possible.Good food, nicely cooked and served perfectly.

We went along for lunch with a view of taking a party of 24 for an evening meal later in October as we had heard it was under new ownership. We were warmly welcomed on arrival, promptly served and the food was absolutely delicious. Ham, egg and chips for me, fish and chips for Paul were freshly cooked but served without delay and absolutely excellent. Before we left we discussed booking for the party and the owners could not have been more helpful and put together a menu of 3 mains and 3 desserts at a set price - amazing value and something for everyone. Our group thoroughly enjoyed the evening and again the food was delicious and served promptly in the lovely restaurant.Go along - you won't be disappointed!

I have been wanting to eat here for some time and the opportunity presented itself simply because they are one of then only local pubs that serves food late on a Sunday.Warm welcome, good beer and friendly towards the children ( 5 and 2)Menu for kids was half portions and both the fish and chips and ham and eggs were great. Chicken and rib eye steak great too.Chips of note, chunky and rustic!Enjoyed by all and will definitely be back!

We visited this pub whilst cycling locally along the Cloud Trail. It is signposted from the Trail and is located in the attractive village of King's Newton. The pub itself is 16th Century with a restaurant and accommodation provided in the old stables just opposite. The inside of the pub has all the character you would expect for a pub of this age and is tastefully decorated. It looked as if it had been recently refitted judging from the furniture in the restaurant. We had food from the Sunday lunch menu which had several roasts as well as salmon and a vegetable risotto dish. My elder sun enjoyed a prawn cocktail starter and for the main courses we had the pork, chicken and a risotto. All were excellent and the accompanying vegetables were fresh, tasty and cooked to perfection. We had just enough room for desserts - what looked to be a home-cooked cheese cake and chocolate brownies. All excellent once again. My wife and I had an espresso which was great coffee thoughtfully accompanied by a small square of chocolate, gratefully devoured by the boys. The pub has a very good choice of real ales and we plumped for the recently CAMRA award winning Timothy Taylor's Boltmaker. We were not disappointed. My older son commented on the immaculate toilets decorated with suitable period tiles. The staff were friendly and available when required without being over-bearing. Prices were very reasonable. All in all, quite a find and a delightful way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

We had a daughter to pick up from east midlands airport so wanted a basic pub meal some where close. What we got was a fantastic meal of high quality but also with real value for money. I made a mistake having the burger, not because it was poor in fact it was very good, but because my wife had sword fish which was superb. All the food was of a high standard as was the relaxed and welcoming service. The happy chatting in the bar area helped to create a wonderful happy evening. A real find .

We had a family lunch here to celebrate my birthday. There were eight adults, four children and a baby. The staff went out of their way to make us welcome. They dealt with food requests for the children that weren't even on the menu without any fuss. The food was delicious, we all had a great time and it will be a birthday I remember for years. Thanks.

Met here for a meal with Triumph Sports Six Club friends and was really surprised by the quality of the food.We had booked last minute as some of the group were staying over in the accommodation at The Hardinge Arms and had said the food was good.We all sat in the bar area at a reserved table which had a picture of our groups cars already displayed. A very nice touch. We all had a main course which was universally liked. I had the lamb dish which was cooked to perfection and had plenty of subtle flavours. Some of us had desserts which were equally as good. My Summer Pudding was full of flavour and not over sweetened. Lovely. If I had to be critical I would say that the portions were a little on the small side but the quality of the food was excellent. All in all a really great discovery. Excellent food. Well kept Real Ales and a very friendly atmosphere. Will certainly visit again when next in the area.

They didn't ask us to pre-order. There were 14 of us, seated at 2 tables - a table of 10 and a table of 4, which wasn't ideal. We had to wait over an hour for the main course, then over half an hour for dessert. The food was lovely and well-presented when it eventually arrived. If we go again, I think we should pre-order and also ask for the table layout to be different, so that we can all sit together.

We love this place and come here regularly. First time ever I wasn't happy. The sausage meal was tasty but the veg were dire. Grossly overcooked tiny bits of carrot a few gratings of red cabbage and the tiniest bit of broccoli that would have been more appropriate for a toddler trying new foods!
