My wife and I have been to the Harbour Master several times now and each time the food and service has been excellent. Located only a few yards from the bank of the River Trent, with easy parking in a council run (so not free, unfortunately) car-park just across the road and close to the town centre, the Harbour Master is in an ideal location. There is even an auction house within easy walking distance should you be interested in buying or selling. Our most recent visit was on the 14th November 2019. Due to the inclement weather, flooded roads and so forth we opted to cut short our visit to Newark but before leaving we decided to visit the Harbour Master for lunch. Due to time constraints we chose only a main course of fish and chips, no starter or desert. The fish could not have been any fresher had it come straight off a trawler. Really, really good. As usual the service was excellent. The Harbour Master has the atmosphere and general ambience that makes you just want to sit and enjoy the food while chatting with friends over coffee or a bottle wine. We've not visited in the evenings but it is understood there is live evening entertainment during the summer months. Highly recommended.

We went for an evening meal while the weather was still nice with the bifold window open. Two of the party were vegan and vegetarian they were both catered for with a lovely meal. Really nice and and cosy feel to the restaurant shabby chic decor. The host was very attentive and swift when serving. Lovely aspect to the front onto the river Trent. Definitely worth a visit.

I have sat inside and out and always found the Harbour Master a nice place to drink in the evening, but it's taken until now to grab a bite to eat. So pleased we did. Very friendly, relaxed atmosphere and the food was excellent. The salmon and cream cheese bagel was probably the pick of the meal, but everything was very good. We will definitely be back to sample the gins and the tapas evenings.

Impromptu visit this morning for breakfast - what a lovely surprise ! Not what we were expecting - but delighted we opened the door and went in . A friendly welcome - quite formal but very polite. Beautifully presented decor - vintage style - not a typical 'cafe' for a Sunday morning . We both had a cooked breakfast which was so tasty and with quality ingredients to justify the price - 2 breakfasts, a tea and a coffee was £22.40 - service was initially very slow but professional, polite and adding to its charm. Clearly this place has loads to offer at all times of the day -with lots of choices of food and gin! Would recommend it if you want something a bit 'nicer' than your usual morning coffee stop - we will be going back !

We had an excellent lunch today with a particularly tasty Mince and Onion pie. That was followed by an equally enjoyable apple and sultana crumble - both highly recommended so we’ll be back. I had already rated this little bistro, which is excellent for either a cuppa with a lovely cake or a light lunch. I was just annoyed at the gentleman who gave this lovely place 3 stars for some silly reason and even doubted that the other reviews are real. May I for a start suggest to the gent that the word he used in this context, "voracity" means eager to consume a great deal of food, and that he probably meant "veracity", as in "truthful". The Harbour Master is not McDonalds neither is it The Ritz, it's a decent place for people to stop for a short while to enjoy a nice, light lunch or other refreshment in a tidy, clean place with very pleasant staff. My husband and I go there regularly and I have brought friends there too.

Old fashioned values abound, cash only - makes you wonder why, why want extra for a debit card when Britain is now mainly cash free. The produce is ok but nothing special, a suggestion that the chocolate cake come with ice cream was taken up but it was served as a separate dish and the cake on it's own plate cold.Very overated makes me doubt the voracity of the reviews to date.

Conveniently located across the road from the river and opposite a town centre car park. Friendly staff, and a nice atmosphere, you could while away an hour or two relaxing in here, with the front open on a warm day. Would really be better if they had a menu rather than you having to ask what's available though and the waitress then making suggestions. Maybe that's because its certainly not cheap - £17-odd for the two of us, for a slice of cake with a single scoop of ice cream and a pot of tea each.

Sorry this is a very late review from my experience back in Dec 2016 but still wanted to log the visit. I called and spoke to the owners before hand as I had never been inside but had been recommended to visit. I wanted some place perfect for my mums 60th brunch and I wanted it to be special. We had a lovely experience and the owner greeted us by name and immediately wished a happy birthday to my mum. (sorry forgot his name) came out with a top hat that had a candle on it, while singing happy birthday, haven't seen my mum giggle that much in a long time. The lady owner who was busy in the kitchen also came out to say hello and wish mum a happy birthday. They really did make our experience wonderful. A very late review but one that I thought is better late than never. Happy customers and now regular visitors and always recommend to others.

Sadly I only get to visit Newark a couple of times a year, but happily for my second visit of the year, we rounded off a shopping trip with lunch at Harbour Master. Once again the smoked salmon and bagel was phenomenal. It is one of those dishes you have to force yourself to eat slowly to make the pleasure last as long as possible! Parents loved the bacon and brie panini. The coffees were delicious - why anyone would go to a chain shop for coffee when there is such a great cafe in town?!

We stopped off on a journey from Lincolnshire to Leicester, and sure of finding a good cafe in Newark, we were lucky enough to find this fine establishment right next to the car park near the river. It is stylish in an eclectic way and I immediately saw the fabulous cakes on display (I chose Lime and Courgette - very good indeed). We had to wait a while for the order to be served but this was because there was a fairly large group in before us and the careful attention to detail and quality the owners/staff put into each order. When ours came the coffee was perfect and the apple and cinnamon scone with rhubarb and ginger jam was also excellent. The cafe is licensed and we saw several people enjoying a glass of wine and view of the river. He asked if we were wanting lunch and asked us to sit down and he would bring a doggie chardonnay and the menus. Puzzled about the chardonnay when he brought a large bowl for our dog and explained the drink was cool water with a little full cream milk in it. Half the bowl went in minutes. Strange as he had turned his nose up at the water we had brought! We ordered brie on toast with home made tomato sauce and caramelised onion sauce and two coffees. The meal was excellent and there was plenty of brie and two slices of toast and a nice side salad. Our welcome was very warm and the staff attended to us with friendliness and respect. Our coffees were good and not over strong. We fully recommend this cafe for a lunch. Only came upon this by asking for change for the car park nearby, how lucky we were, from the moment we entered there was a nice feel to the place, we enjoyed fresh superb coffee and homemade cakes, service was excellent and the attention to detail was very evident. Give this a try you will not be disapointed, dog friendly too.

Tried this little coffee shop out for the first time today. I'm always on the hunt for a hidden gem and this is most certainly that with its delicious food and cute, quaint atmosphere. I had the homemade butternut squash soup served with a (warm!) seeded bread roll and my partner had a ham and mustard mayo sandwich which came on lovely brown bread with salad and crisps. We both really enjoyed it and will definitely be returning! Tempted to go for the afternoon tea next as the cakes look so tasty!

Excellent cappuccino and good selection of teas. The cakes looked yummy and the lunch menu was very appealing. This time we only popped for coffee, next time we will definitely eat there. You can sit there in the warmth and watch people go by on the wharf.

Harbour Master our favourite watering hole in Newark. Jenny and Andy have a gem of a place here with food, service and location unbeatable. Latest addition to the menu sausage, mash and onion gravy but you must be quick, when its gone its gone! Everything served with a twist of elegance, fantastic sandwiches and home made cakes to finish. A calm and relaxing atmosphere. What a find.

On a shopping trip to Newark we decided to stop for a cuppa and bite to eat. This place was just next to where we parked the car and looked bijou and welcoming. It does light bites, a range of teas and coffees and several home made cakes. My wife had courgette and lime and I had fish on ciabatta with horseradish, Greek yoghurt, chives and salad. The food was very good and much of it is home made. For tea lovers there are 15 different teas and of course the usual coffees. The harbour master is like sailing into calm waters. We were transported away from the hustle and bustle of Newark on a Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed the tranquility of good food, good service in lovely surroundings.

Small but warm and friendly with some of the best tea and cakes around. Also excellent ice cream among a host of delights, well worth going to see what's on offer.

Birthday luncheon, we hadn't planned to come here, we met a butcher at Rutland show, he had just opened a bistro in Sherwood, unfortunately is was not open today. Being probably the hottest day of the year I did not want to travel too far, we have seen Launay's on a previous visit to Edwinstowe. We were the on dinners in the restaurant. I found the chairs a little too low and not quite supportive. Starters which we share were salmon wasabi pea puree and fennel citrus sperified balls, absolutely fantastic then chorizo cumberland and a wonderfully cooked egg. Mains, fried pulled pork and a sousvide steak, I had to try it because I sousvide at home, however I felt that it lacked taste and was a little dry. the tomato relish was pretty good, served in an old marmalade jar. dessert was to die for, basil cheesecake with micro lemon balm Definitely be back to ravage the a la carte menu

Four very nice meals. We had a rib eye steak, pie of the day, vegetarian wellington, & liver & bacon. Well presented & served with a smile. Waited about 25 minutes - good time for fresh tasty food. Followed by sticky toffee pudding & cheesecakes. Nothing left on plates! Clean throughout with ample close by parking. Thank you. Very reasonable prices. Will return.

Went for Sunday lunch with family. All the staff were brilliant and the atmosphere was good - nice to have a pianist playing while we ate. However the vegan version of the roast dinner wasn’t great. There was a nut roast listed on the website menu however when we got there it had been replaced by a different option. It was a spiced cauliflower patty which tasted good but didn’t fit on a roast dinner IMO. We were told that the mash wasn’t vegan so we would get extra roast potatoes instead, but we only got three small roasties each and when we queried this, we were told you usually only get two. The greens were inconsistent; I had a pile of kale while my cousin had green beans. The carrots and parsnips were rock hard (and cooked with honey so not truly vegan). The vegan dinner felt a bit measly compared to the others, with very little effort to substitute items or present a filling plate of food worth the price tag.

Gentleman welcomed us and was so helpful and accommodating. Beautifully decorated for autumn/Halloween. Comfortable bay seating. Couple of steps into cafe, toilets upstairs. Wonderful porridge and extensive breakfast combo menu. Great food and lovely staff in a pretty cafe, could not ask for more.
