Got a takeaway and the vegan pho we ordered which was meant to come with Shitake mushrooms had zero mushrooms in it. Very disappointing considering it is one of their few vegetarian/vegan options. The veg in the pho was very basic (boiled brocolli and carrot) and pretty uninspiring. The pho was tasty but very let down by the lack of mushrooms.

Hundreds of pound spent and they still tried to squeeze money from us. Tonnes of hidden fees on top of the £4 corkage (we were aware of as this was the cost of bringing your own alcohol) which meant our large group paid almost £50 extra on top of this they charged a discretionary 12.5% and a large group 12.5%, the corkage was included in the food bill so is also subject to the service charge. This is before they asked for a tip on the card reader which may make you think that you hadn’t paid a service charge. Came here for a friends birthday, large group of people. The food was good, service was okay they just need to be more transparent with the pricing.

I’ve been here before and previously really enjoyed the food so I went with my friend for lunch today. We had drinks and a starter (tasty, very nice) but when we got our tofu & vegetable pho we were horrified to find multiple little insects in both of our bowls. The staff didn’t apologise and became argumentative when we explained we didn’t want to pay (they wanted us to pay for our starters and drinks and we said we didn’t want to because we were concerned with the overall hygiene). Mistakes do happen but the total lack of apology made this visit terrible. We also noticed that some waiting staff were preparing some vegetables in the dining area which seemed odd, don’t know if that’s normal practice however.

I was having a birthday weekend and had booked to go to my favourite noodle bar. Turned up and it was closed, so had to look for an alternative. We walked around a little and found this place and took a chance and went in. It was absolutely the best decision we could have made. We ordered noodles, Caramelised Pork, Chicken Wings and vegetables in Ginger. The pork was melt in the mouth and the wings crispy and seasoned just right. The chicken Noodles were so good I found it hard to stop eating. We topped this off with some Sake and the evening's feast was complete. I cannot fault this place, if you want delicious food, great company (our waiter was funny and charming), then this is the place for you. It's my new favourite and I would definitely return.

FOOD: starter of beef wrapped in betel leaves was delicious. Loved it. Tasty and well presented. Main of beef pho I felt was bland and I wouldn’t have it again. AMBIENCE: restaurant needs a tidy up SERVICE: Cheated me on purpose!! The waitress handed me the credit card machine with just a total on. It asked if I wanted to add a tip, so I did. I thought it was all a bit much bearing I mind it was on a £10 Covid offer so I asked for the bill. She had not taken off the £10. Also. A tip was included anyway so my tip came on top! She said she’d forgotten the £10 discount. Funny thing is a guy who left just before me spoke with me outside. The waitress had also ‘forgotten’ his £10 discount and double charged his tip. Clearly trying to cheat us!

Came here with a large group. Food was superb! Lots of choice. Lots for meat lovers and vegetarians. To be honest, it’s like a regular oriented place. Noodles, spring rolls and sticky rice. Lots of flavours but not as spicy as Thai food. My only issue was the ordering of food, the arrival of the food, and the billing was hap-hazard and frought with stress! They started taking the order down one end of the table and then the lady disappeared. By the time she cane back for the rest, the food for the first lot cane out! Then there was no organisation between starters and mains. It all cane out in a disorganised way. Some in our group finished their mains but others still had no food. And they took the food order before the drinks. The drinks cane out very late. Is was stressful to get them to bring everything out. Not a chilled experience! They also got into a mess with billing and we had to spend half an hour helping them! Bottom line is a small intimate group would be fine. But these guys struggle with large groups. Although the food was exceptional it was not a relaxed chilling affair and I felt we were so preoccupied with whether everyone got what they ordered, we didn’t actually chill and talk with our mates. There was no socialising as the most if the chat was about who didn’t get what they ordered! Small group yes, large, definitely not!!

Just dined at Hanoi Cafe and frankly shocked at the disgusting service we encountered. Our starters were taken from the table before we’d finished, the bill was presented before we’d finished our mains and then the chair was taken from beneath me before I was ready to leave! We were two hours from closing and the place was half full, so no excuse. And the toilets were disgusting. Do not recommend.

Went to this restaurant new year's eve with family and friends. "Bring your own drink" it said outside. What it didn't say was corkage fee was £16!!! £16 to allow us to open a can of beer each. Absolutely discusting. The food was ok but I won't be returning to here. Our waitress said it would come out her wages if we refused to pay it and said we couldn't discuss it with her boss because he was in Dubai. I'm not surprised charging that much for nothing. Avoid

Absolute terrible service. They tried to sit us down at a table with someone else when there were tables spare. I asked for us to move, which they agreed to. Sat down and chose our food, but we were never served and after a friend asked the waiter, she snapped ‘wait a minute’ - we waited for 40 minutes and then gave up and went to a restaurant down the road. Several other groups left without being served too. Those that had been given food sat ages without being given the bill. Only go here if you have hours to spare. Can’t comment on the food as we never received any.

We love the cosy vibe, tasty food, good menu and the fact it's often busy.

I went here with my girlfriend last night for dinner - I must profess, I am not the biggest fan of Vietnamese food going around, so my review will be slightly bias as a result. We ordered the salt & chill ribs and summer prawn rolls for starters. I expected the ribs to be grilled as per normal but they were fried, as a result they were quite difficult to eat as each riblet consisted of 70% bone. The summer rolls were nice and fresh but the very essence of the roll means that it lacks pure taste, you have to dip it in the peanut sauce they provide to 'save' the dish.

I live nearby and occasionally visit one of Kingsland Road’s many Vietnamese restaurants for a quick lunch or dinner. I hadn’t been to Hanoi Cafe for about a year, but saw it was participating in the ongoing Amex Shop Small promotion. I ordered the beef curry with sticky rice, which was served in 15 minutes and was piping hot. The food was tasty, a decent sized portion and authentic. At £13, with a subsequent £5 discount it was decent value too. My only constructive observations are that some of the staff can’t speak great English so nuances to your order can get lost in translation. There was only man serving the whole restaurant too: I decided it was quicker and easier to get up and pay at the counter in the end. Not my favourite Kingsland Rd Vietnamese, but a solid choice on this occasion.

I used to work nearby and this was a weekly staple, as from 12-3:30 they have a lunch set deal which used to be £6 but is now £6.50 for a meat/tofu pho/noodle/noodle salad/curry or £9 if you also want a starter (spring rolls, tofu, prawn summer rolls were the BEST!) So I thought it was great value. I always got the tofu coconut curry, but the lemongrass tofu is also good. Otherwise once I had a tofu banh mi (baguette) and it was DELICIOUS, I've never had such a delicious banh mi. Highly recommended at also a £5-6 range. If you're going a-la-carte, other favourites include spicy seafood pho (HUGE BOWL for £9 I believe, minus £2 for a smaller but still fillng bowl!) or the best thing ever - sizzling fish with dill and herbs, with a noodle salad to eat it with. Everytime I order it the lovely lady who works there tells me it's a good choice! I've tried a few of the other Vietnamese places on Kingsland road, but this remains a strong favourite!

We were in the area and felt like something new. We've been to a number of Vietnamese restaurants in the area, and many are good. This place was different. Bright, with brightly coloured posters (old propaganda?) from Vietnam. Friendly service and the kitchen area visible from the tables. We had one of my old favorites, spring rolls, and these were amazing. The wrap was crispy and made from sort of lattice work (noodles?) instead of the usual wrap. The filling was lovely, and the sauce bright and delicious. We ordered roll-your-own summer (salad) rolls. This was fun but messy. We wanted a fish, and they gave this to us for the rolls though it wasn't a listed option. The fresh herbs were abundant, the sauce was lovely. You can also have them make the rolls for you, but this was fun. We topped this off with a beef and green papaya salad. Delicious. I had a homemade lemonade which was not over-sweet and had lime as well. Tea was nice too. The meal was delicious and relatively light, the price was decent for London. The service was friendly. There were many things on the menu we'll go back for. A delightful lunch.

I was looking to try Vietnamese cuisine for the first time and saw a lunchtime special advertised in the window of the Hanoi Cafe for £6! Went in and saw the owner and his wife, very kind, gentle people who made me feel at home straightaway. The decor was clean, tidy and welI laid out with the cooking done at the back of the restaurant - no hidden kitchens! I asked the lady waitress for her advice and she recommended the chilli and lemongrass chicken. I thoroughly enjoyed the simple, honest fair with a pot of green tea in a gentle calm lunchtime atmosphere. All done including service for £7.50!! A pleasure and a treat and I would go back tomorrow and try a Pho (the bowls look so huge that I thought I couldn't manage one first time!)

I booked in advance but there really was no need for lunchtime. The place wasn't much to look at but the ambience was pleasant and the service was good and attentive. The food was great and was served quickly! Good selection and reasonable amount of vegetarian options too. Definitely worth a visit and would go back.

There are plenty of other Vietnamese restaurant in the area and this one really isn't that special. The only thing that I liked was the retro posters from Vietnamese, that was really cool.Food was it wasn't outstanding : The spring rolls looked weird (or old and refried), the egg fried rice was a bit dry. The service was pretty bad too...we took a glass of wine each and at no point the waitress offered to also bring water. When we asked for it at the end of the diner, she only brought one glass of water. When she saw me pouring water from that glass into mine, she was like "oh you re fine, good."When I paid, she said she was going to come back with a tax receipt, but didn't bring back the £2.5 change ... As if she has deserved a tip

We had hot and sour vegetable noodle soup. Absolutely superb!! Lots of crunchy vegetables, chilli, ginger and coriander. Fantastic. A huge bowl £7.40 on the menu. However, the young assistant charged me £17.60 for two and said that 10% was added for service - I only realised this mistake after leaving. One thing was unpleasant. On visiting the toilet, I noticed an elderly cook leave the cubicle without washing his hands. He went through to the bar area, dipped his hands in a bowl of dirty water and briefly wiped them on some old rags by the sink. Fantastic food, but that prevents me from visiting the Hanoi Cafe again!

The food was delicious. I was pleased to see there wasn't too much choice (a huge menu is always a bad sign). I had the pho which was great. My friends had curries - also delicious.

Only downside - the service wasn't very attentive. Took forever to bring us the bill and they didn't check up on us throughout the meal to see if we needed more drinks or anything. Really felt like we were fighting for the waiters attention which was disappointing because it wasn't very busy.

MORE AT OpenTable

Hanoi Cafe is one of the oldest Vietnamese restaurants on the strip of Kingsland Road just north of Old Street. I remember eating there in its early days and being pleasantly surprised by its varied menu choices and near authentic cooking style, which brought to mind memories of Parisian Vietnamese restaurants if not quite of travels in Vietnam. I went back a couple of weeks ago with a largish group of friends, one of whom is quite an expert on Vietnamese cooking and ordered starters for the table. Everything was nice, fresh and tasty although the crepes and minced beef in betel leaves stand out in my mind as particularly good. For mains we formed sharing coalitions of 2-3. I got to try whole tilapia in lemongrass sauce, coconut duck curry and aubergine braised with tofu. I have read complaints about a dearth of duck in the curry. Perhaps, but our group was satisfied with our order, although in hindsight the curry was a bit on the bland side compared with, say, its Thai counterpart. On the other hand, it helped balance the other, spicier dishes. With quite a few rounds of beer and soft drinks ordered, the bill came to less than 20 pounds each. Service was fine, although at times stretched a bit thin as the restaurant began to fill up. Except myself, everyone else in our group was new to this restaurant and said they enjoyed it both for the food and the homely ambience.

Our daughter, who lives in London, took us to this restaurant. The menu has great variety and the food we ordered were delicious! Cold prawn rolls, spicy pho, satay, grilled Hanoi pork, and something else I can't remember the name. All were tasty, salad and herbs were fresh and crunchy. Friendly waitress, efficient service and casual atmosphere.

We are regular visitors to Hanoi cafe. One of the best things about it is that it is so cheap while still being very tasty. Dishes aren't always consistent - I've had the tamarind prawns twice here and they were quite different the second time. BYOB is great and they have no issues uncorking wine for you.

The starter - steamed rolls - was wonderful and we thought we'd be in for a real treat. The mains could not quite keep up: the prawns weren't fresh at all and the crispy duck was really dry with little meat to chew off the bones. The wines on the menu are not worth bothering, however the restaurant kindly let's you bring your own for a very fair 2.50 charge per person. Around the corner is a supermarket/off-license with some really good wines. Overall still good value though I'll be back to the neighboring Vietnamese places which seem slightly ahead.

Although it was pretty decent value for money the food was quite average standard fair...starters quite greasy. There are better (in terms of quality) Vietnamese in the area. Staff were superb, very efficient.

The outside of the appearance of the Hanoi Cafe is not as flash as the other Vietnameses Restaurants in the area, the inside is clean with basic furniture, but the food is excellent. Meals are well cooked and the service was good when we visited. The prices are very reasonable for authentic Vietnamese food.

Small cafe/restaurant amongst the largest concentration of Vietnamese restaurants in London. Offering an extensive menu at low to moderate prices. We had summer rolls (you can even roll your own) the best being the lemongrass chicken, followed by Pho and a all in one pork dish. The soups were tasty but a bit thin on meat/fish content. Service was good although for most of our dinner we were the only ones in the restaurant. They also serve bubble tea and French baguette sandwiches with Vietnamese fillings - a great lunch option during the week. At £20 per head including copious amount of tea and two beers it was perhaps the cheapest meal I had this year! Recommended.

Had a lovely lunch at Hanoi Cafe today. Really authentic tasty summer rolls, bahn xeo and crispy rolls just like I enjoyed in Vietnam. Plus the lemongrass ribs were really good!! All washed down with cold Saigon beer! Attentive service in this family run restaurant and much cheaper than some of the "trendy" vietnamese places along Kingsland Road. It's not a fancy place but for casual, reasonably priced, good vietnamese I'd highly recommend.

Adorei!

Hadn't been there for quite a while and last month finally got a chance to dine there. Unfortunately, the menu has slightly changed since my last visit and so instead of my favourite dish I ordered a poor replacement.. Veggies were rather soggy, bland and boring, however veggie summer rolls remain as tasty and crispy as before. Even though the prices have jumped a bit, they are still reasonable. Service wasn't particularly in a hurry, our request for tap water was ignored at first... After a meal we asked for a bill and a waiter brought us wrong bill twice and finally returned to us with the right one saying 'next time ask for a receipt, not a bill'. I don't think that was necessary, really.I am disappointed after my last experience, seems that lovely, family run business has lost its charm. Next time I will give a chance to a different restaurant on Kingsland Rd.
