Guy's & Owd Nell's Tavern in Wyre

I have been coming to this venue for over 30 years and it used to be excellent. Our meal today was totally disappointing, and sadly this is the second time . I was prepared to overlook the first as a one off, after so many good meals there is the past, and as it was extremely busy. But today we all left a substantial portion of our meal and two of our party said they would not be coming back. Two of us ordered the steak puddings. The pastry was too thick and frankly tasteless. The meat lacked flavour and was under seasoned (if seasoned at all?) The person who ordered a pizza said it was edible but the topping was very sparse. No one enjoyed the chips and we send back plates which looked almost as full as when served. Such a pity and embarrassing for me as I booked it! The venue is delightful and they do make a lot of effort with event days and weekend activities. The staff are pleasant but young and untrained. (We watched a young man wiping tables before we left. He did not move a single item, salt and pepper pots, menus, vinegar bottles were all skimmed around in a perfunctory manner. I do not blame the young staff but the lack of proper training for the job!) No amount of pleasant service and nice views is going to compensate for tasteless and unappetising food. Sadly what has been a favourite place for many years, until recently has now gone way down my list of places to take people.

Magnificent cask ales! Well worth a visit if you like real ale. The garlic bread is also very nice, be sure to have it with cheese. Unfortunately I’ve had to update my review. Everything above still applies however, wait times at the bar are abysmal at best. You really do have to bar watch and go when no one else is there as the moment there’s one or two faces at the bar, you will be there for going in 20 minutes to get served! Walk-ins often get immediate service and not those patiently waiting. So, if you want a promotion service pick your spot well at the bar. It’s the difference between 1 minute or 15+ (I ran a stopwatch on my phone, so I know these times to be accurate)

Wow, this place has gone down hill. The whole place needs attention from a basic clean right up to needing building work and decorating. Sticky tables and carpets. Bad smell and expensive. £3.85 for two small scoops of ice cream. Never again. Stay away. Billy Bobs near by and cheaper.

Steak pudding was heated up not fresh.The meat was burnt & the crust was rock hard. Potato skins had no taste & again you could not cut through them with a knife. The side salad was probably the only part we ate without having a negative thought. A pint of Stella & a sparkling water was £8.50 which in my eyes is taking the piss. No wonder it’s up for sale Atmosphere is crap also

Our fave place from our first days of dating to 5 years later. Never fails to hit the spot. Both lodging and eatery are fantastic!

I had steak and kidney pie,my wife had what should have been beef sandwich,to start the beef sandwich was more like a thin steak on bread from a loaf,very dry,no pickles and the chips felt like they had been warmed up a while ago,then the steak and kidney pie,more suete than anything,two small pieces of kidney and simular to the steak,again the chips were very chewy,in all a very waste of £35,usually a member of staff come to see if things are OK,not this time,they must have known that the food was not to thete usual standard

Food was ok but not to the standard of the prices, I assume the manager (old blond lady who works the bar) was very rude, after serving us our first drinks and taking £50 for two meals then told the young girl behind the bar not to serve us any more drinks until me and my partner went and got our ID from our room mid meal! ( we are also both in our 30s so don’t exactly look under 21 anymore). Very miserable lady, by looking at other reviews it seems this definitely isn’t her first complaint! Won’t be coming back and will be spreading the word so people don’t waste there money.

Been coming here for years and always had great food. However the last few times we noticed it wasn't as good. This time we noticed that the staff are unapproachable and off handed. We were overcharged for our food because they had the 'old' menus out. We did receive a refund for the difference. The manager explained that they had to increase prices which I can fully understand but the total was £5 overcharged on 2 meals!!! The steak and kidney pudding was £12 .95 now it's £15.95, that's nearly a 25% increase on 1 dish. I don't paying more if they food is great quality but it has gone downhill. I ordered a pizza which was £11.50 but it was so small, even my daughter commented that the 'ASDA pizzas for £6' were bigger. The place is dark and morbid and could do with a clean and refit. Maybe the 25% increase will help them pay for it?? Doubt it! I always visit here when visiting Garstang or Lancaster, but am seriously thinking of spending my money somewhere else.

Fantastic, as always. Great atmosphere, extensive menu with fast service and really good tasing food. Suitable for all diets too.

Took my son for his 16th birthday meal tonight food worse than wether spoons repaid us money for 1 meal out of four nothing like I'd remembered in the past visits such a shame for a lovely place seriously disappointed and ruined my son's birthday

Went there with my brother dor his birthday food was an absolute joke and when complained was told that was hos theh served there meals ive had way better in a soup kitchen but its such a shame they are bringing down such a lovely historic venue

Nice pub surrounded by lovely traditional thatched roof buildings next to the canal in Lancashire. Cosy and warm inside.

I have eaten here several times, each time the food has been excellent. There is a variety of dishes to choose from. All have been top-notch. As well as myself, several members of my family have eaten here, we all choose dishes different from one another. So far, there has never been any cause for complaint. The service has always been friendly and efficient. The staff are always ready to answer any questions and offer advice on dishes. The bar/restaurant is always lively with a great atmosphere. This shows what a great reputation the establishment has. The prices have always been reasonable for the amount and quality of the food. In fact it is so good we are going there tomorrow en route to the airport.

Went for lunch on Boxing day and it was great. I had the hot roast beef sandwich and would fully recommend it.

It's OK for the money you pay. Good team of people.

What an atmosphere! Proper buzzing British bar/pub with a great choice of beers and food on their menu (see photos) for enjoying in the restaurant. Mozarella cheesy garlic bread is lush!

Lovely Christmas 2 course meal for £20

This is a very busy spot- but despite that, the staff are excellently attentive and the food was amazing. We are veggie and the festive menu accommodated that very well. I can’t believe how much I love this place.

Lovely setting by the canal with plenty of outdoor and indoor space. Food was nice and plenty of parking to.

It was an enjoyable visit and, crucially, the food was reasonably priced, tasted great and was served hot and in a decent amount of time. I used to be quite a regular here when I moved to the area around 10 years ago so it was nice to visit again and I hope to return again soon. My only negatives were the service at the bar where you order food & drink as this was quite poor and led to queues forming frequently even when not too busy. Another member of staff on there would have made all the difference and should really be picked up on by the shift manager. The other slight criticism is that the place could do with a bit of a glow-up, as they say, it's looking a bit tired now and whilst it was nicely trimmed for Christmas a bit of investment in the general decor would work wonders I feel. Overall though we all enjoyed the visit, especially the food and value so I will certainly be returning soon based on that alone.

We visited Friday 29th November for my birthday treat (my birthday is the 30th) The staff were lovely and friendly . We really enjoyed it in there . We enjoyed it last year svd have enjoyed it this year .

Had a lovely visit to your car park. I stopped to rest my eyes for just a minute. When I woke up I saw a blue Volvo parked up with what looked like a Arne slot lookalike with his Nana. He must of been helping her practice apple bobbing as he had his hand on the back of her head and was bobbing it up and down. The apples must of been in his lap tho as there wasn’t enough space for a bucket of water. Good on him tho.

What to say the place is very good we been there 3 times in last 2 weeks. Food amazing ,staff helpful. One fault i need post to the owners More place to eat inside for guest with dogs.

Had the seafood sharing board was wonderful except for the cockles. A friend had the sweet potato soup which she said was delicious.

Very poor service, i had to get up from my table 3 times for cutlery and to ask for the mint gravy which was missing from my meal. The ladies toilets were disgusting and the baby changing was out of order wont be coming back.

Always a treat coming here beautiful setting on the Lancaster Canal. Im dieting but cannot resist a little indulgence!!! Just the best steak and kidney suet pudding. And the chips are to die for. A must for hearty food lovers will not be disappointed.

We go to Guys often and highly rate it but decided to try the tavern for a change as there was a fair outside. Granted it was very busy but we won’t return. Food was quick arriving and was ok for pub food. However, it was the service that was a real let down. We found a table and asked for a menu and we were given a very stained paper menu. We asked at the bar for some crayons as there was a card for kids to colour and told they had none. The food arrived but we had no cutlery. We asked a passing waitress who looked put out we spoke to her. Not sure what was worse the fact she handled the fork end with her hands or that she practically threw them on the table while giggling and chatting with another waitress. I think people will forget an ok meal and return but they won’t forget poor service. It’s fantastic you hire very young people but please train them.

Changed quite a lot since my last visit, not for me .

Fabulous food nice atmosphere and very nice service . I had the ribs with salad and my husband had the steak and kidney pudding. Fabulous home cooked taste . Generous portions and reasonable prices . The halloumi fries were delicious too. It was warm enough to eat outside so that was an extra bonus . Great for a walk of the canal afterwards.

It's a popular place and with the seating outside and it's location it's a great place yo visit. Beer was spot on

Lovely old buildings and great outside space in the summer, however inside the place looks very tired with old dirty carpets, paint coming off the wall etc. The past couple of times I have visited, the bar has been covered in used glasses- even at less busy times. Food menu is average and could also do with some work, the pizzas can be good, however I have also tried the Sunday roast there which I felt was extremely poor. Has potential to be a fantastic destination after a bit of a revamp and more care taken but as things stand, not worth the visit.

What a fantastical place good food and good drinks and what a star James was as a bartender drinks were served quick and with the up most respect he truly made my experience 10 times better will definitely come back to just have a drink 5 star rating

Used to be a regular here when I lived nearby. Was passing by today and thought I'd stop for lunch. A slightly surreal experience - I haven't been there for, it must be 35 years, and it doesn't seem to have changed a bit! Seriously.......not a bit, I swear even the menu was the same, albeit at increased prices. Had a roast beef sandwich.....which was just like it was 30 or so years ago, too. Had a slightly dingy feel back in the day, but there was a good atmosphere. Can't really judge what it's like these days but seemed a bit lacking today. It was busy so I guess it can't be all bad.

An excellent, if a little odd, place for a meal, especially if you have to eat gluten- free. The food is recommended. On the outside it looks like one of those creepy, slightly run- down theme parks you get in horror films. On the inside, it is a rustic- themed and quite dark restaurant and bar.

Catered for a table of 10, and the food came all together and was delicious. Good menu, good atmosphere, and an ideal setting alongside the canal. Love it

Good place to go with kids ....

Mmmm not very happy travelling 45 minutes to get there worst Sunday dinner. No roast potatoes, no coliflower cheese and gravy was like water. Staff did bring it over on separate plate tho after asking for it Chicken burger was cold. Although pork belly and wings was lovely

Be going here 30 plus years always for the steak and kidney pudding always delicious except for this time we ordered 4 and all 4 were awful no taste only 2 and 3 pieces steak or kidney we traveled 35 miles to be totally let down hopefully it was just one off will be watching reviews

Visited with my parents, the burgers were good but the chips were terrible - only just cooked and not very warm. The ducks enjoyed them though! There is ample parking and is fairly flat for wheelchair users. There is a brilliant car boot in the summer about 5 minutes up the road. We will definitely be eating here again.

This place has gone downhill. Is there new management? Visited last night around 7pm expecting a nice relaxed canal side tea. Music blaring inside and out, way too loud. Ordered vegetarian pizza, pepperoni pizza and salmon sandwich. Vegetables on pizza, looked like they had been thrown on top of a margherita pizza, cold and raw. Pizza base not cooked through either, very soggy doughy base. Salmon sandwich (salmon surprise, as very little salmon) served on what looked like Aldi bloomer bread (not granary as it once was) fries, and shop bought coleslaw (No side salad) Pepperoni pizza was greasy. Staff attempting to tidy tables and chairs around us, throwing chairs under tables, making more noise. Place looked unkept, tables could do with a revamp…just tired looking and short of a deep clean. It’s a shame because Owd Nell’s was once a lovely place, sadly that’s not the case anymore.

Fantastic place lots of caricature. Good choice of food on the menu. I had the pudding and chips very good.the bar prices are very reasonable for a restaurant. Then take a stroll down the canal to work of your meal.

Owd Nells feels like Old Nells as people say. I went here with high hopes but unfortunately the food wasn’t great. The country pub atmosphere is nailed and the service is wonderful but the eating experience could really be improved. My fish was overcooked as was the chips. I’ll definitely visit again and see what’s improved!

Great place to grab a cheap dinner, very nice and lovely ice-cream. Kids loved it.

Large canal-side pub with large outside seating area. Piped music is a tad too loud outside, if you are close to the speakers. Good range of food at a reasonable price. Great range of beers and drinks (there were 3 golden ales to choose from). Order food at the bar and table service is very efficient.

Been there before and the food was lovely, however this time the Food was unfortunately greasy and I couldn't eat it. Would still go again as we have already rebooked for December. Wouldn't let one bad experience stop me.

I visited with my daughter for a catch up lunch. Service at the till to order was very slow with the staff making coffees and talking. I ordered the cheese and onion pie for my daughter and I asked if I could have the prawn sandwich but have the sauce on the side. The girl said yes. When it came the sauce was already on. I asked the waitress who was not interested. Poor as she just didn't care. Poor training. I wouldn't go again as it is very expensive and has a very busy, not remotely relaxing feel. Such a shame.

Great venue and atmosphere. We had a slight issue with one of the dishes. The way the manager sorted this was impeccable, minimum of fuss and rectified beyond what we had originally expected.

my friend and i visited on a sunny saturday at the end of June and although the atmosphere was great and we enjoyed ourselves, we felt the price increases for the food since our last visit were ok based on cost of living challenges but the quality had dropped which was disappointing. We will absolutely visit again but next time maybe only for drinks - especially if it is busy.
