Just an overnight stay at a nearby Travelodge and needed dinner so something ordinary would have done but this was really great. Nepalese food so similar to Indian. What I loved was that the flavours were so good but didn't overwhelm the flavour of the ingredients so the vegetables still tasted like themselves. That is so fantastic. Otherwise you could be just eating anything and it tastes of spices only. Out waiter was also absolutely lovely. I think this is a really great place and hope they get some extra customers from this review.

I've wanted to try this place for ages and finally got around to it for dinner. Honestly some of the best food and service I've had a in a long time. We shared a number of dishes from the menu and the star of the show was the lamb shank. It was literally falling off the bone and the portion was huge. The waiters were so attentive and knowledgable on the menu. It is also 15% off Monday to Wednesday and the meal as a whole was sooo fairly priced. Couldn't recommend more. A gem!!

What a lovely place and what lovely people. Very attentive service and plenty of explanation if required. The food was excellent. The knuckle of lamb was to die for. This is beautiful and spicy cooking (not necessarily hot spicy, unless you so wish) and each sauce is obviously different and individually prepared. The Rice was the most delicious and delicately flavoured I have had - ever!

We celebrated my partner’s 30th birthday party at Gurkhas with 15 of our friends. We went for the set menu for starters and between us enjoyed a sumptuous range of menus, much of it shared as the food was too delicious to not sample! Personal favourite was the Sherpa lamb, absolutely wonderful. I cannot say enough about the level of service we enjoyed - nothing was too much, the team were attentive and went out of their way to ensure we had an amazing time including a birthday cake for my partner (a surprise I hadn’t even requested!). Please come to this Balham gem - you will not be disappointed. Thank you to everyone for making it such a special evening!

We visited Gurkhas after a busy moving day. We didn’t have a reservation but the stuff were really accommodating despite the restaurant already being very busy. They even moved us to a bigger table when one became available. The servers were lovely and very attentive. Every single dish that we ordered was delish. We particularly enjoyed a sizzling chicken dish. Just as we paid our bill, we had a round of Baileys on the house as a “welcome to Balham”! 100% would return again and would definitely recommend 😊

I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. I celebrated my birthday dinner and the staff decorated the tables with fresh flowers and placed balloons in the greenery around. It was cool and attractive. The food was delicious ...ie as good as the previous week and vegetarians were well catered for . I am returning next Wednesday evening. Do try and you will discover why Ghurkas in Balham High Road is a favourite eatery of locals.

January 2023 Sunday lunch. Empty when we, a party of four arrived, Drinks as everywhere served quickly, meal ordered fairly soon after. Starters arrived moderately quickly but were cool, lamb dishes were chewy, tempura squid was undercooked and cold, home made onion bahjis, very generous and hot. Half an hour after we arrived, two more couples also came in. It goes downhill from there. Both parties had all of their orders served and yet we were still waiting for ours which did not turn up until over 50+ minutes after ordering. No apologies or explanations. Food arrives. Portions poorly presented with sauces slopping over the bowls onto the table. They were also meagre. Most of the dishes, each had seven discernible items ( tofu, lamb, veg ), floating in a large amount of sauce. A sizzled dish of seared lamb was even more tough than the starters and in some instances, was hard to cut with a knife. One pudding ( of two), was an homage to "master chef" program but to all appearances, was also an homage to the chest buster scene from Alien. It is a sunny January with an outside temperature of 6 degrees. The expansive dining area with opening walls, was chilly and suffered excessively from cold drafts One of the later tables complained and a portable heater was provided. High points. The one serving staff was pleasant and helpful with the menu. Real linen napkins. Individual cotton hand towels in the lavatories. Very quiet, unobtrusive background Indian music. As a guest but not the host, I estimate that the four starters, two meat mains and two vegetable dishes, two rice portions, a single bread, two puddings, three pints of cobra, three coffees plus 10% service (?), came out in excess of £160.00 Summary, very ordinary although other customers did appear happier with their meals. Cold , SLOW service, poor value. I could not recommend and two stars is generous.

Be prepared to shell out for an evening meal here. Nice enough setting & clearly a popular spot with the locals. The 660ml beers are all nigh on £6 each. I can't comment on the other drinks other than the coffee & desserts at the end which were reasonably priced. The food however (when finally recieve it), is good. I had a knuckle of lamb with a plain rice. The meat was tender & falling off the bone. The breads nan, roti, fulka etc are well overpriced in my opinion. I came here with friends.

We're no strangers to Indian food but this was truly exceptional. The food appeared to be cooked using very little ghee, so we didn't feel bloated afterwards. Spices were mixed and well balanced. For three adults, we ate a couple of mains and three side dishes with rice: excellent variety and quite sufficient volume. Pity that the beer was bottled rather than on tap, but it also wasn't the standard Cobra and Kingfisher.

Because prawns crackers are part of Chinese food. Secondly, when ordering Tandoori Roti was told that they don't make it but will do as it's not busy. Again this is strange, too! Tandoori Roti off menu at a Nepalese restaurant .....well I find it difficult to grasp as being an Indian and a Nepalese food fan. Though their food tasted good, it doesn't convince me that it's a true Nepalese Restaurant as they claim.

More generally this is a very laid back place for a quiet meal with friends or family, has a local restaurant vibe but the Nepalese food is a little unusual and certainly worth travelling from further afield for - Balham train and tube station is a few minutes walk up the High Street. The food has elements familiar from both Indian and Chinese cuisine, but with distinctive twists. The food was tasty and well seasoned or spiced, the breads were fluffy and the portions generous. As well as the attentive service the food and drink is good value for the location, not incomparable with an average curry house but a different experience.

High quality food and dishes a little different to the norm with a good choice of dishes. I've tried three different chicken dishes and all have been lovely. Nice prawn crackers to start with and food delivered efficiently. All staff are lovely and friendly and the table settings are pristine.

This is not a usual curry house. Most dishes are similar to other curry houses but all are different because they have genuine flavour and spices. Lamb is excellent here and there is a variety of breads all of which are tasty and fresh. Service is great and you are not too hemmed in. Recommended.

Food amazing, Staff very friendly, Great atmosphere. Would highly recommend this place! We all had different and everything was so tasty. Not as spicy and hot as Indian food I felt, though my husband found his hot! He had the lamb knuckle. Will definitely return. Young families were there but not sure if they do a separate kids menu.

I'm just so upset that I've waited this long to try this restaurant - all that wasted time in Indian restaurants with the same food that whilst often good lacks a sense of adventure. So we braved it, a menu with no familiar names (fortunately the descriptions were more familiar) everything with a twist that told you, or shouted at you Nepal is not India... and that's not a real surprise. I'm just so glad we have a new spot.Inside it's smart, an airy dining room with white table cloths, precisely laid cutlery and attractive napkins. I let the waitress know that we were 'first-timers' and she guided us through the menu with sensible recommendations. We ate well, wine was reasonably priced and it's just such a shame I won't be in Balham again until October but something to look forward too and more than just an alternative to an Indian.

Ate here last night and was blown away by the standard of the food. The momo dumplings and knuckle of lamb were excellent and everyone in the party of 4 enjoyed their food immensely. The atmosphere and service were brilliant. Me and my partner had never had Nepalese before but we will certainly be having it again at the Gurkhas Diner. Definitely recommended and well worth a visit if in the area.

I had dinner there last night and the food was superb. The restaurant is clean and classy, the service was excellent and the food was amazing. I recommend the Khumbu Charmri (Roasted cottage cheese diced, filled with coconut and fresh mint) which came sizzling to the table.

Great food- very tasty and great if you want to try something a bit different, as there's not too many Nepalese restaurants around. Also the food is a fair price - could have a better beer selection

This has become our local 'go to' restaurant for a delicious, casual, affordable and a cultural escapist meal. The service is really genuine and wonderful. The food is consistently delicious. The ambiance is a nice blend of authentic bric a brak and slightly tacky wall hangings. All in all, we are consistently happy and leave sated and smiling. Try it. Can't miss.

A really tasty meal. We ordered far too much but were able to take food away in a 'doggy bag'. Friendly and helpful service and a calm atmosphere.

We visited this restaurant on a Saturday night with family who live in Balham and we had no problem booking a table for our large party. Staff are very pleasant and took drinks orders immediately, then giving us time to peruse the menu. We only had main courses and these took a little time to come, but as we were talking and catching up this was not a problem. The food was delicious and one or two of the party thought that this was the best of its type that they had had for a long time. Nepalese cooking is similar to Indian, but with different spices and different choices, eg noodles, instead of bread or rice. One course with breads, rice, noodles and drinks, including 3 bottles of house wine £18 per person, including service charge. Attractive but small restaurant with clean toilets, which always shows a good level of hygiene. If we lived in this area would certainly be a regular.

I've been wanting to try this place for ages as it has an interesting sounding menu and great reviews. However it didn't quite live up to expectations. The food was quite nice but a bit lacking in flavour. The service was good but I wouldn't rush back given the large number of restaurants in the area

We went here because the reviews were pretty exceptional, so our expectations were pretty high. I would say that the food was fairly ordinary and luke warm in a restaurant of only 6-people (you'd expect everything to arrive freshly cooked).

From the flabby orange battered stone cold courgette slices - which I think were meant to be fritters although I can't be sure - to the three marooned prawns on a plate, flayed and dry as a cotton wool bud with no sauce or flavour, the meal we had would have given Gordin Ramsay a field day and was well worth an episode of Kitchen Nightmares - Gurkhas Nightmares perhaps. After those tasteless almost unswallowable starters came two mains, one of which was fairly edible and did at least have the good grace to have a sauce on it, the other sadly which was sizzling pieces of bone dry lamb. And nothing else. We asked for some sauce and the waitress said 'no sauce'. So we had to make do. We did consider running out to the corner shop to get something to lubricate it - possibly engine oil - but in the end we just smothered it in the sauce of the other dish. I am considering opening up a restaurant at which I serve three dry prawns on a plate followed by three dry pieces of burnt lamb as I feel it will be a great little earner with very low overheads. I shan't be visiting Gurkhas diner again however.

Gurkha's Diner was my first experience of Nepalese food and I have been going there regularly ever since. The food is lovely and a fascinating mixture of herbs and spices which generate very interesting flavours. There is a slow cooked lamb dish in particular which is absolutely delicious, the lamb falls off the fork and is coated in a wonderful aromatic sauce. Its so much better than going to your average curry house and a wonderful addition to Balham.

I have been a regular customer to this place for the past 6 years. They serve amazing food and the service is very good. We haven taken our family and friends and they all love it. My favourite is the lamb dumpling. Every time I do a take away I order 3 portions of it. It would be great if they do chicken dumpling too. I will whole heartedly recommend this place.

We really like this restaurant. Many of the dishes are not too spicy, though they are very aromatic and delicious. We go fairly regularly and we are going to try a take-away this evening

Our first experience of Nepalese food, which proved to be delicious. Subtle flavours and interesting combinations of herbs and spices. An immaculate and well presented restaurant, much more than a diner. Service was friendly and unobstrusive. Highly recommended.

This is a great restaurant. The staff always smiling and are very friendly. The food there have a rich flavour and the atmosphere feels welcoming. The displays in the kitchen are quite interesting (they even have a Guinness world record certificate!) The desserts are lovely and so are the mains, esp.the still-sizziling lamb and the salmon in a top notch sauce! One problem though- the price is stupendously expensive!

Its not every High Street that has a Nepalese restaurant! You may go for the curiosity factor but you won't be disappointed by the food, which to me is a wonderful mix of Indian/Thai/Malaysian/Chinese!....familiar but different, which is no bad thing. And you gotta love a restaurant with crisp white napkins....I do anyway.

Had dinner last night, restaurant is an extrealy popular venue so i would book in advance, it is about 4/5 mins from Balham tube & mainline. Staff are very friendly and polite, great variety of wines on the menu, we had several dishes to share between the 3 of us and all the dishes were superbly cooked, the tastes of each dish was not over powering even the spicy HOT dishes, we were not rushed to finish even though it was very busy.

Excellent food, excellent atmosphere and lovely staff. Tasty, fresh and delicious, the food is soooooo good. This place is really fun and buzzing. Make a booking because it was extremely busy and the locals would love to keep it a secret! Everything we ordered was 5 star but you cannot miss the steak tataki or smacked cucumbers and the Margaritas were very good. Go. It’s excellent. And they’re good people. Oh and ps they are opening a ‘Speak Easy’ below the restaurant that will be superb.

This place is a local secret. Its run by a Japanese family who have been in the area for years. We first happened by here by accident looking for a Chinese takeaway on a wet night. They have Chinese on the menu and we started to order to cater for some kids in our group but noticed the Sushi guy working away. We converted most of our order to Sushi and nooddles and bought a relatively inexpensive bottle of Saki. The Sushi, Noodles and Sake proved excellent. Tempura vegetables is also one of our favorites. The kids did like the Chinese, which to our taste was a bit average but most kids will not eat sushi - they do like the noodles. It is better to order ahead to avoid a wait because they make it all to order. If you crave Japanese beer they also have a good selection. They wil delver but we general enjoy a weak after ordering.
