Gurkha Corner in Powys

Very simple restaurant (reassuringly old fashioned!) Clean, quiet, excellent food, attentive service. Been before and will go again.

Just had a takeaway from Gurkha Corner. We had poppadoms and chutney, chicken tikka masala, Himali kukhura, pilau rice, and naan. Every dish was superb. So tasty and delicious. We’re rapidly becoming regular Friday night customers - and why not :-). Also, the staff are very nice and polite. Five stars all the way.

This restaurant is small and a little tired looking but serves excellent food, good beer and has good staff. We had the momo’s and crispy salmon to start, which were excellent. We had the chilli chicken and nettle curry as main courses which were more spicy than expected but tasted great. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Wife and I dined here on 23 2 24. We had the Momos and Gurka roll to start - they were fantastic! I had the lamb nettle curry and she had a mild prawn curry, with stuffed Nan. Both were exceptional in taste and quantity. A fantastic place in Brecon that you must try. Excellent waiter that night too. A nice small intimate venue.

Very tasty & fresh food. Well cooked & something a bit different. The momo starter was amazing then noodles & chicken curry infused with nettle powder top notch. Little gem, not huge place but was packed on a Thursday night which says it all.

We throughly enjoyed our selves, the food and service was excellent 😋. We'll definitely return next time we're in Brecon.

Absolutely beautiful food. My Partner and I have visited a few times and the food has always been excellent. Good service and pleasant staff.

This restaurant has great reviews so we were keen to try but sadly definitely a bit let down. My onion pea and mustard seed rice had carrots and peas and literally two mustard seeds in. Both rices were quite soggy at the bottom of the dish. Curry’s were very average, like a Tesco curry. Bread was nice and drinks and curries cheap. I would say this seemed like a place definitely trying to get by on cheaper ingredients. Our waiter seemed miserable too. Oh well. Maybe an off night but we wouldn’t go back again in a hurry.

The Momos' were very good - nice portion size. The king prawn starter was very tasty but very small in terms oif portion size. The Curry's were flavoursome but again lots of sauce, and not as much meat as expected. The Black Dahl was different to what I expected - which is more to do with me than the restaurant. The waiters were very pleasant and efficient.

We visited this gem of a restaurant for our 37th wedding anniversary. The food is fantastic. Far better than your run of the mill Bengali Indian restaurant! The service was typical of Nepal: Friendly and welcoming. We will definitely eat there again.

What a gem.. Delicious food! This is a very special find with traditional Gurkha home made curries and momos.. some of the best I've ever eaten. If you've been to Nepal then the flavours bring back fond memories, for me this was a most unexpected surprise to find in Wales. We were looking for an Indian restaurant and smelt this place driving past.. I'm so happy we stopped in. There was a childrens menu too so our 5 & 2 year olds were very happy with their sausages and chicken as well. Staff were very friendly and helpful, the prices are very good and the golf club running there makes it all the more curious. We had the best meal and will definitely return.

So there we are my not girlfriend and I (in joke, but she'll read this), having spent about 4-5 hours trekking around Brecon and surviving on a cheese string, 18 pieces of corn and a bottle of water. Needless to say we were pretty tired and hungry. It was about 26 degrees outside so what better way to cool off than a relaxing dip in a pool, or river. Unfortunately, despite there being no better way to cool down than a relaxing dip, we opted to go for a curry at The Gurkha Corner. Not content with just going for a curry, we also, never having tried Nepalese food before, ordered what felt like the hottest currys in Brecon. Despite this, the food was incredible. My not girlfriend is a vegetarian, and as a result of her beautiful nature and temperament, she allows me to eat chicken. We were both well catered for. The paneer was perfect and my dish was perfectly cooked, accompanied by an exquisite naan bread. Service was perfect, with the staff being attentive but at the same time giving us time and space. There was a good atmosphere with a lovely couple commendeering the secluded corner table to have some privacy whilst they snogged. In any case, after sweating our way through our amazing food, and utilising the complimentary napkins for our runny noses (romantic) we left satiated and very happy with our experience. Very highly recommended.

We came for a takeaway while staying in town in our campervan, after a local recommended this restaurant. Unfortunately, it did not live up to the recommendation. First the good bits. Indian restaurant menus can get a bit repetitive, with mostly the same dishes, so the menu here was quite refreshing. Unusual ingredients such as nettles and meats other than chicken and lamb - beef and pork! - made a great first impression. My wife, with her small appetite had the lamb chop starters and I had the stinging nettle curry with chicken. We both had roti/naan bread. First the bread - it felt undercooked - really quite soft and a little doughy. The nettle curry (warm) tasted, as far as I could tell, OK but it just didn't have much flavour - it was quite bland. It certainly didn't have enough chilli to earn it a 'warm' rating. The lamb chops were similarly dissapointing. They were quite dark and crispy - they looked like they'd been well spiced and then deep fried. Unfortunately, while the lamb was reasonably tender, they were over cooked and a bit dry. All those spices? Very little flavour from them. Again, rather bland. This restaurant apparently has a good reputation but, unless our meal was an abhorration and they are normally better, they need to do better than this

This restaurant was a brilliant discovery, Small entrance that’s easy to miss. Can’t recommend it enough, Excellent service, fab food and a lovely busy atmosphere.

Really Terrible, Myself and 3 friends attended this evening after a long day's walking. We had booked for 8 30pm. We finally got served burnt flavourless food at 10pm. Terrible meal, clearly microwaved and to add insult to injury on flagging at payment no consideration reflected. They are literally having a laugh and chancing it on tourists.Don't waste your money go elsewhere. I'm always very fair in my reviews and credit when credits due. This however is probably the worst restaurant meal I've ever had.

We had a takeaway from the Gurkha on the last night of a holiday near Brecon. Ordered a set meal for two and it was pretty awful! Chicken in a thin spicy sauce without so much as an onion, watery tasteless lentils…the meal was supposed to include yogurt, popadoms, chutney and salad but they were all missing. £25 badly spent.

Had a great traditional Nepalese meal here. Momos were great. Fantastic Dahl Bart, followed by a few Gurkha beers. Staff were really friendly. What's not to like!

Stayed local on the weekend and fancied a curry so came here. Been a few times before and it’s always been good the Momos are amazing to start they’re a must. this was recommended to me and had high expectations, but was kind of disappointed. I'm sure the meat options must be amazing seeing how well reviewed it is, but as a veggie, won't be returning I'm afraid as both dishes were either a bit bland, or just not particularly nice. that being said, the naan breads were spot on, stand out.

After a busy day hiking in the Brecon Beacons my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. We had pakora and aloodum (excuse spelling!) potatoes to start and I had a paneer dish for main with a yummy butter naan. The staff were pleasant but not overbearing and the pace of service perfect for us. At a time when travel overseas is all but impossible this place took me straight back to Nepal, a lovely experience.

The starters led us to believe that this was going to be a good meal but what a let down the mains were! We chose mostly vegetarian curries and found them incredibly bland. The vegetables seemed to either just be thrown into a ready made sauce raw or they had been boiled and then added so there was little flavour. Weatherspoons curry is better!!

Booked a table online. Turned up at the correct time but was informed that they had never received he booking, despite having an email confirmation. Suggested to the young lady that they should change their booking system. Despite claiming to be the manager she said “Yes, I know”. Rudely treated, no empathy for the fact we had booked, no offer to do anything to rectify the mistake that was clearly their fault. Went up the road to a Thai/Chinese that happily accommodated us. Will never return.

We arrived on Sunday of Bank Holiday weekend on time to eat for email booking only to be told that we did not have a reservation. The girl who said she was the manager suggested we went to Abergavenny 20 miles away despite us having told her we’d cycled from Cardiff. We had a reply email confirmation of our booking which we showed her but she just apologised saying that she doesn’t get them! Absolutely appalling service. Beware booking with them as you might find that they don’t honour your booking.

Both dishes we had were very well cooked and tasty. Prices are reasonable. And the menu provided a good selection of food.

My Wife and I have always had good meals here in the past, but never a takeaway! Due to restrictions we had one recently and it was a 100% disaster!We ordered two curries, two special rice and two nans and waited around until 6 p.m. for the order.My wife went in to collect it - it was one rice short and one Nan.She informed the waiter, who went into the kitchen to put things right and he the gave my wife the order in a large bag!When we got Home, the rice was missing; instead there were two pappadoms with chutneys!How could the waiter who took the order get it wrong twice, and what went on the kitchen that night?We won’t have a t/a meal again, and by the way, the rice was just bland, the one curry had massive chunks of chicken/lamb and was tasteless, as were the Nans! I think the waiter/chef on duty that night were on another planet or in Nepal, as nothing registered with them night!My advice, steer clear of the takeaway service.

My Wife and I had Lunch here recently! Both curries and rice were superb, as was the vegetable nan. Very special place, and if you haven't tried it, you must do so!

A small restaurant which was full on a Saturday evening. Excellent tasty fresh-cooked food and good service, all for a decent cost.

Delicious Nepalese dinner, friendly staff. Varied menu, good descriptions of dishes and good selection of veggie dishes as well.

Although we had pre-booked online it had not been entered in the diary, but we were made to feel very welcome none the less. Social distancing was adhered to for all the dinners, even in such a small restaurant and all the staff wore masks and gloves. The food was superb, having lived and worked with Gurkhas it was a very tasty reminder of some fun times.Neither my partner nor I like food that is too spicy and their recommended spice limits were spot on. We were also very impressed that rather than serve a room temperature bottle of our first choice of wine in a bucket of ice, they came and told us it hadn't been chilled and would we like to choose another, which we did and were very impressed with the quality of the house wine.A very enjoyable evening that was more than complimented by the wonderful food.

Very disappointed. We were looking forward to something interesting and reasonable quality given Brecon's links with the Gurkhas. The food as a whole was just like and poor takeaway. The beef dish was tough. The rest generally uninteresting. A real shame.

Introduced my Daughter/Son in Law here on 5 8 20.My Wife and I and them all had epic Starters, followed by four different curries, rice and Nan bread.My Daughter stated it was the best meal she'd ever had and was far superior to the usual Indian food.Nice to see it open again and my compliments to the young man that served us, he was a credit to the place.See you soon!

I was not sure at first reading the menu, but I can tell you the food is excellent and the service is great, if I ever travel back this way it will be my first food stop. RICHARD B

A group of 8 of us had an excellent dinner here on a Sunday evening. Service was not particularly fast but none of us cared, we knew we were not in a Macdonalds and we were happy to wait for the excellent food which we got. I had Gurkhali Special as a starter which was superb and my wife had the Jhinga Machha which she thoroughly enjoyed. We both had the Amilo Mitho Piro with chicken and it was very hot and delicious. Drinks service was fast enough and the bill for us all was quite fair. We will be back much sooner next time - Corona Virus permitting.

First time visiting the restaurant and the food and service were equally astounding! I had the chicken chow chow which was absolutely divine. Unfortunately there were a table of 8 senior citizens who I have no doubt are serial complainers out for a freebie who were extremely rude to the staff making extremely rude , raised comments. Unfortunately life experience was  certainly not on their side in terms of knowing their alcohol limits. Despite all of their boorish slurs the staff handled the situation extremely well and we certainly did not let this spoil our evening in any way. Thank you for a great evening and the most delicious food . I will certainly be passing on high recommendations to all friends and family and look forward to visiting again soon. Thank you ☺️

Table for eight booked for 6.30. Meals arrived at 9.30. Two tables arrive d after us, obviously local regulars and were swiftly served and left before we had eaten. When I queried why everything was talking so long I was verbally accosted by people on both these tables. 73rd birthday celebrations for my husband, and friends ruined.

Absolutely amazing food, full of flavour. The food is all reasonably priced and the portion sizes are great. The staff are polite and attentive. They could not do enough for us. Unfortunately when we were there, there was a table of eight OAP’s who were extremely rude and obnoxious to the staff. Despite this, the staff were extremely professional and handled the situation well. Overall, I would 100% recommend the restaurant and I was blown away by the food.

First time visit to this amazing restaurant. Food and staff were amazing and couldn’t do enough for us. It was a shame that there was a table of 8 ill-mannered customers which were extremely intoxicated. We arrived at the restaurant and were served in a professional manner and the food was piping hot and very tasty. The table of 8 were extremely rude to the staff and when a member of the public from another table asked to have a bit of consideration for the staff, one person from the table of 8 got off his chair and approached the young man ready to start a fight which was absolutely disgusting. This wouldn’t put me off as the staff were professional and we couldn’t fault our meal. Can’t wait to visit again soon.

Had an excellent meal here. First time I have been and would certainly go again. The chicken ghurka curry and special fried rice was really tasty and thoroughly enjoyed. The staff were amazing and friendly and had to put up with very difficult customers that evening (who coincidentally have left a one star review). If only there was a way to give that group of customers a zero star review and warn other restaurants not to accommodate them. The staff went above and beyond and the meal was delicious! I cannot wait to visit again!!

Booked this restaurant as heard it was popular. Having visited, don't doubt it's usually very busy - but fortunately we visited on a quiet night, which meant we got excellent service. Small but intimate place, traditionally but nicely decorated.Food very tasty and dishes just that bit different and unexpected - like the Momo dumplings! Also loved the way they cooked spinach - means I could really become a fan of this veg. Oh - and I recommend the black lentils. And the Gurkha beer. Delicious!

On a cold crisp day we dropped in here for lunch, purely "on spec". It's tiny inside, but big on flavour and welcome. We chose Nettle curry, a Nepalese paneer dish, momos and butter roti. All of them were delicious and all were served with friendliness. Thankyou, we'll come again.

The best meal out me and my partner have ever had in Brecon! And good value too! 2 starters, 2 mains with sides and 2 beers and a coke, cooked fresh (didn't mind a bit of a wait for this) and couldn't fault, we ate every last mouthful!
