Had a takeaway, gotta say the food was Excellent. I had the chicken tikka methi and mushroom rice, wife had naan and a rogan sauce. Mixed tikka starter and onion bhajis. Friendly atmosphere a fair few dining in, lovely ambiance. Will definately go back, a very diverse menu. Well done

My friends and family are (were) regular patrons of the Gulshan and have always thoroughly enjoyed the food there. Last month though we ordered a takeaway and found a large piece of chicken in the vegetable kurma. We are all vegetarians. I emailed the Gulshan the next day to ask for their feedback on how this might have happened (and before I left a review) but haven’t had a response. So here’s the review.

The cuisine is the same as it was 20 years ago. I can live with this lack of imagination if everything else is done well but sadly this is not the case. We ordered lamb mains and the meat was cooked but on the chewy side. The plates were brought out cold and no plate warmers. I went for a naga lamb which should have been fiery but had barely any kick. The food went cold so quickly due to the issues mentioned previously. We asked for the bill and gave up and had to walk to the bar to get it. The bill came to £68 for 2 which is pricey for the lack of quality. You can find better.

Enjoyed a lovely evening with work colleagues. The restaurant is bright and airy and has a great atmosphere. I wasn’t sure which curry to choose- I don’t like too hot or too sweet- so the waiter recommended the chicken bhuna, which was a perfect choice. Thank you for your kind help!

We’ve lived in and around Shrivenham on and off for over 30 years, enjoying a wide selection of cuisine. The majority has been first rate, but this experience the other night at the Gulshan was anything but. Service was especially poor, food was disastrous and the whole ambience of the restaurant left a lot to be desired. We’ve just travelled further afield to find another Indian restaurant so we can have a better experience. This wasn’t difficult as we returned to an old favourite The Jewel in the Crown in Old Town. Couldn’t fault this. Everything that was bad about the Gulshan was great here. If you can travel then don’t waste money or your time at the Gulshan.

We visited this restaurant last night and found it lacking in every way. Unhygienic staff rubbing their hands through greasy hair or across their faces while delivering food, rice that was certainly not basmati (it was overcooked pudding rice with tiny grains) and some of the most unremarkable food any of us had ever eaten. No obvious management - had to keep waving to attract staff members who were not wanting to be seen, and after catching the eye of one waiter, with one half of his dirty shirt untucked, he made an angry point of throwing down the napkins in his hands before angrily coming over. Food was literally thrown down onto the table. Wish we had gone somewhere else. Shrivenham needs a good Indian restaurant, but the Gulshan Brasserie is about as far from that as you could possibly get.

I visited here after nearly 2 years of walking past and seeing it busy and smelling the food. I hadnt read the reviews and to be honest i am glad i hadnt - as if you take them at face value, you may not. Make a decision yourself - go in and if you like great and if you dont - then dont go back. However, we decided to go on a Tuesday - the £15.95 banquet night. It would appear that most of the Defence Academy also went, as bar my wife and 2 other ladies, the place was packed with men - a bit akin to The Blue Oyster Bar in Police Academy, had you not known any better - but, all well behaved. So, upon asking the waiter for a poppodam and chutney tray, we looked at the menu and couldnt quite work out what you did - as it was the normal menu - but, the waiter basically said anything and if it was a cheaper dish, fine, if it was a more expensive dish, you got a smaller version OR, you could pay extra for Prawns etc etc. So, we choose 2 Chicken Chat to start. Chicken Tikka Masala for the wife, Lamb Dhansak for me and Aloo Gobi to share - now, this is where we had a slight misunderstanding - as i wanted 2 rice and an extra naan (which i would have paid for) however - we got 1 rice and 1 naan (as part of the banquet deal) - thankful though, as my wife would never have eaten her own rice. Suffice to say, we were midway through the poppodoms and the starter came - sadly the waiter took the raita off the tray, then took the rest (so the lime pickle, onions and mango chutney were no more - at least though the remaining poppodoms could be eaten with our quite large and very tasty chicken chat - with a side of salad - never know why Indian restaurants do this - however, the chat was lovely. Then came the 2 mains, the rice, the veg dish and the naan. The Naan (peshwari, we opted for) was lovely - the rice - was nothing great and nothing bad - rice is rice - the cauliflower and potato was brilliant. My dhansak was excellent, the lamb was just right and it was spiced as it should be. My wifes chicken was lovely too - large pieces of chicken and a big portion too (as she didnt finish it) so i did. I am not really a fan of Tikka Masala - as it is not as hot as i would like them. We came and paid - £47 which is not bad, throwing in a pint and a half. Will we come back Probably not, as we live in Wales - but, if we were in the area and perhaps with another couple, then yes - as we only come here a few times a year and like to try different places. But, if we were local - we would certainly try to eat here and definitely would recommend - but, remember its your decision.

Really poor service from the start. Asked for a round table away from a particularly loud group and eventually told it was okay (manager had to overrule the obstructive waiter). Food was okay, but nothing special. Dreadful service hit a new low when the (same obstructive) waiter refused to get us a coffee after we’d paid the bill. I’m his words “o asked if you wanted coffee and you said no, so I cannot get you one now”. Incredible. Other issue was number of staff not always wearing masks.

We visited with some friends after seeing the restaurant many times from the outside. I have to say that it wasn’t an enjoyable experience at all, very poor quality service and reminiscent of a 1970’s curry house. The dining area wasn’t great, apart from the music, there weren’t any Indian themes or decor at all. Not tidy, and the huge cobwebs hanging from the roof lights looked like they’d been there a while. The service was very poor - whist still eating our starters the waiter began clearing the table, “telling” us that main course was on its way. As it arrived, my friend was still eating his starters. The food was just put on the table quickly, it was very rushed, very unprofessional. The quality of the food wasn’t the best, very little chicken in my main course, not particularly tasty. We weren’t asked if everything was okay with the food. The whole atmosphere was one of us being terribly inconvenient for them, keeping them away from the takeaway business. If you’re looking for a really nice night out, fine food, lovely atmosphere, great service, keep looking. Very poor value for money, won’t be going back, there’s far better out there.

Visited early evening on a Saturday, the phone was ringing off the hook with carry out orders and the queue of customers collecting their take-aways extended out of the door. Although the food itself was very good, the few front-of-house staff were over-stretched and lacked any kind of attention to eat-in diners. So placing our order, requesting a second drink and getting the bill all required trying (in vain) to catch a waiter's eye, then getting up and asking. Had to ask three times for the bill and still it didn't come; eventually I pushed into the take-away queue so we could pay and leave. Needs more staff at these peak times and existing staff need to be reminded to make eye-contact with diners occasionally.

It is impossible to judge from one visit so we have now had three take aways and two have been off the scale brilliant and one just plain old excellent. You can tell instantly that the chef(s) care about what they produce. Fresh tasting vegetable dishes and as a fan of all things Aubergine...wow they know how to cook a Brinjal. My preference is for seafood in a curry and I have now enjoyed three fabulous ones. Only very minor complaint...perhaps give the nans a little longer in the tandoor. All in all a marvellous choice for an Indian (Bangladeshi) take away...probably the finest I have ever come across.

We shared a starter as they are quite filling and then had a curry and naan each and a rice to share. Only let down was that the service was a bit poor, waiters more focused on reading the newspaper at the bar rather than bringing our water over and then same again when I asked for some mango chutney - considering it was a Monday night and not busy, there is no excuse for it. We were quite a large party and every single person selected a different dish - they looked different but the tastes were all very similar. The salad was fresh but there seemed to be little usage of Asian vegetables in the dishes most of what was on offer could have been purchased at any chain UK supermarket. With all the recent enhancements, the restaurant is comfortable and roomy. The welcome is genuine and you are immediately shown to your table. I love the tandoori food, served piping hot with excellent nan bread and the wonderful table sauces all washed down with cold Cobra beer. This is a modestly prices, bangladeshi restaurant with great food, excellent service and a warm welcome from Mr Ali and his staff.

While not been changed on the outside the interior of this restaurant has been completely altered since our last visit there. We always try to fit in a dinner there when we pay a visit to our family and friends. We were five people and we ordered the menue for four. This was still plenty of food for us. The taste and the seasoning was excellent. The service was quick and very good. Our food arrived in only a short while since the place was still only half full which changed later on and it was packed.I can recommend this house for its great indian food.

Visited this restaurant tonight for the first time. The staff were welcoming , friendly and efficient. The waiter delivered nicely warmed plates for our food and a heated warming plate for the table to ensure all the curries were kept at a good temperature. The food itself was very tasty and of good quality with main courses excluding rice starting at around £7.I chose a Chicken Jaipur which I had not tasted before. I found it to be a deliciously good choice.Would be happy to return when next in the area.

Our friends from Manchester regularly visit us and now they are always pleased to here if we're getting a takeaway from the Gulshan. Excellent food again but this time it was a bit spicier than usual so there might have been a different chef working.

This is our 3rd visit there. Me and my Mrs we been there last night with our other friends. As usual lovely range of choices and quality cooking which are really tasty. The service was very attentive and friendly even though they were really busy at that time. Staffs were so helpful and modest that we did get help from choosing dishes till splitting the bill while we were paying. Had a nice complementary drinks after meal for everybody on behalf of the manager. Every single time this place makes us feel so humble and friendly to be somewhere for dinner. Recommendable and will visit again surely.

We bring our friends and family here because the food is so consistently good, and we often get take aways too. It can be a bit busy on a Friday, so book in advance. Recommend the green lamb.

I regularly dine here at the Gulshan. We booked a table of 5. The Restaurant was buzzing as it was busy on a Thursday evening. The atmosphere and ambience here is lovely. The food here is tasty and there is a variety to choose from. Highly recommended from me and my family.

Rather good food with an interesting menu with many unusual options on it. The dry and tasteless naan breads let the place down as did the pickles served in plastic pots, which looked like they had come straight from Ikea. Come on guys, if you are going to charge for pickles at least make the effort to serve them in tableware appropriate to the surroundings and the price. The food is delivered by staff barking out the dish name as if they were working in the local fish market. The food was well presented, (except pickles in industrial plastic pots) colourful and tasted good (apart from the bland and dry flavoured naans), just a shame about the poor service. I made the mistake of asking for a receipt. The restaurant manager refused saying that this was not possible. Very strange, especially as I paid cash. Still I have let my accountant deal with that suspicious activity. The restauramt was busy on a week night, maybe this made the staff a little more flustered and caused them to rush, but my cash and custom should be just as important as that of other's should it not?

I have eaten here on numerous occasions either with friends, family or a take away and cannot fault the food. I'm no curry expert but I have eaten enough of them and the Gulshan always comes good every time. They are helpful if you are not sure what to have. And never disappointed me with their suggestions.Prices are the same here as any other curry restaurants in the area.My only complaint is on a couple of occasions some of the waiters keep pushing you to order more drinks. Now there's being attentive and there's being annoying. Especially when you politely say no and they frown at you and don't seem to take no for answer. I was in there recently and it wasn't too bad. The guys seemed to border on the more attentive than annoying. Maybe the waiters I encountered before aren't there anymore.

We ate in here for a change (normally use it as our takeaway). We were quickly served and it was great quality and great quantity. I always feel more full when we eat in as you order starters and sides you wouldn't have with a takeaway. It does give you an option to choose something different and discuss with the staff before ordering, which is nice. The service was very good with the staff who served us being very attentive and quick.

My wife and I visited Gulshan Brasserie on Tuesday 23rd. Augusta 2016 when we were visiting Shrivenham. It was a truly worthwhile experience. The Restaurant is a bright and beautiful environment in which to dine. The Restaurant staff were courteous, friendly and efficient and we felt very welcome. The food was wonderful and price-wise we felt we had a very good deal. We will certainly go back there next time we stay in Shrivenham.

Nice quality and tasty food again. There might have been a different chef as some of meals were put together a little differently but it tasted great all the same. Quickly prepared and well packaged so didn't lose heat on the 10 minute drive back home.

We had previously visited this pub under its previous management where we had a great lunch. A little disappointed to find out the new management does not have a lunch menu anymore and there is only the main menu. Nevertheless we had stopped for lunch and committed ourselves. Food. Starters: We had a starters and a main. £9.50 for 6 pieces of calamari, and a smear of mushy pea on a plate, which in my opinion came straight out of a packet, and was an extortionate price for a disappointing plate of food. The other starter we opted for was chicken wings. For £8.50 we got 4 plain chicken wings drizzled with soy sauce and a scattering of sesame seeds, again not worth the money. Main course: the steak and ale pie was very good, home made a very tasty with plenty of veg and gravy. No complaints at all. However, the fish and chips was not so great. For £16 we were served a half decent bit of fish accompanied with 9 chunky chips and what was supposed to be mushy peas and tartare sauce. There was more tartare sauce than mushy peas but at least the lemon was chargrilled. Drinks: 1 x Diet Coke and a medium glass of wine which was very nice but at £10 a glass it should be. Service: it was quiet and we were served adequately. In summary, overpriced food and drinks. We usually do not mind spending good money on good food but unfortunately this is not the case here. A lunch time menu, as previously served, would help as other customers were also asking for sandwiches and lighter bites. It is a lovely pub in a lovely location.

We called in here as I’d never been and thought we’d try it out. We ordered two cheese scones with butter and two coffees and sat in the garden. Our very small scones arrived before the coffees, We thought as we buttered our not very cheesy cheese scones that the butter had a strange texture, the coffees were very small and not that hot. As we sat chattering I noticed on the butter wrapper, ‘use by 6/6/23’ The date of our visit being Monday 19th June!! My friend caught the attention of the waitress and told her we’d just eaten two weeks out of date butter, she just said ‘Oh sorry, I’ll tell the kitchen’ We sat for another 15 minutes half expecting maybe a further apology from the kitchen but nobody came near us, so we left having spent £12.30 on two small un-cheesy scones, stale butter and two small warm coffees. Obviously there won’t be a return visit.
