Super friendly staff, great coffee, awesome breakfasts and better lunch specials. A great local gem! Would throughly recommend!

Never been before but will be back. We had gorgeous coffee and delicious avocado on toast with seeds and chilli and perfect poached eggs. Good service. Other food looks delicious. GF alternatives offered and lactose intolerant options. Lovely staff and ethos.

Came on Tuesday and really enjoyed the New York Deli Sandwich. Lovely and fresh, crunchy and very filling. My friend had her favourite Mushroomy. Dogs enjoyed a biscuit from the box. Lovely coffee as always.

Cool, quirky cafe in the lovely town of east Preston conveniently located a stones throw from the beach. Opening times seem to vary though? I’d say about 80% of the time we’ve visited we have been told they’re closing even though it’s been early afternoon with a seemingly full compliment of staff. We used to love coming here during a beach walk although recently we feel like more of an inconvenience to some of the staff for placing an order. We’ve since switched to the Lighthouse Cafe a few doors down who seem grateful of our custom and stay open past 2pm!

Nice place but not that friendly. Arrives just after 2pm and told immediately’we don’t do food after 2’ well this was ok as we only wanted a cup of tea. At 2.30 they started to put chairs up on tables and then we were ‘reminded’ that they were shut at 3pm well yes we knew that. At 2.45 again we were reminded they shut at 3 and were still busying around generally making us feel uncomfortable. Don’t think they should be pushing their customers out either they are open until 3 or not….

Been here a few times but really gone downhill, was served by a young guy who had no knowledge of basic hygiene- kept playing with his hair all over the cakes. Portion size was very small & overcooked eggs. But the worse thing was the awful smell in the whole place maybe more ventilation required.

Smashing flat white (one of the best I’ve ever had) and a very nice chocolate and almond pastry. Haven’t seen this barista before, young lady, keep it up.

Visited just for coffee today. Excellent as always. Have been many times for a small breakfast, sausage sandwich or a lovely mushrooms. Always presented beautifully and delicious. My dogs are always welcomed and enjoy a treat whilst there. Keep up the good work guys, it is appreciated.

Appalling customer service and a total lack of respect for the customers! I phoned G&G @ 13.20 to ensure they were open and still serving food. I was categorically told that if I placed my order by 13.45 we would be served. We arrived approximately 5 minutes later to be told the kitchen had closed. There was no shortage of food or staff, I made the point that I had been promised to be served but no explanation was given. I asked to speak to the manager who, again, couldn’t explain why they had broken their commitment to me. I asked what was the problem/constraint? The ‘manager’ merely said “ there is no need to be rude “ . I asked to clarify how she could accuse me of being rude? She couldn’t think of anything to say apart from “the kitchen is closed”. I said I was very dissatisfied and would reflect this in a review, they were not bothered and said that it wouldn’t impact them as they had been doing ok for the last 5 years. Absolutely appalling and disgraceful in my opinion. I actively search out small local businesses and try to support them, this establishment deserves no support whatsoever. It is interesting that the staff were prepared to spend more time arguing with me than it would have taken them to make us a sandwich! BTW the noticeboard stated closing @ 3 o’clock. A beautiful sunny bank holiday with many potential customers, why not stop serving early and go home! A strange business model!!! We went to Bluebird café and had great food with fantastic customer service despite the significant number of customers.

What a fantastic place. Such a warm friendly place.lovely staff, the coffee and food are both excellent. I am local and have only just started using this little restaurant/coffee shop, and have discovered that I have really been missing out . Cannot recommend highly enough only open daytime.

Having visited grub and gumption a few times, we were really saddened to see how standards had slipped, sitting in the window seat the area by the wall the gap between the wall and table was disgustingly dirty as were other areas when we looked the out side area has had a good sweep for months !!!! When the food finally arrived my avocado on toast was bland sliced avocado on toast!! Nothing else not mashed no chilli flakes and prepared by someone who had there loose style sleeves in everything, not great! My partners food was just the same smoked salmon slapped on a plate overcooked scrambled egg! When this cafe first arrived we were excited to have a taste of London in east Preston. It sadly no more !!! Standards have really slipped and we will not waste our money going there again……

Arrived in E.P. on a brisk walk and fancied a bite and a cup of tea. It was just after 2:00pm. I was greeted with an announcement - 'kitchens closed - we are not serving food'. Nice welcome when you walk into a cafe - taken aback I said nothing and left and went on my way. No grub - no gumption!

Great food and well presented - only criticism is that they do NOT serve semi skimmed milk - only Full Fat or Fully Skimmed.

We arrived bank holiday Monday at 13.10. There were some free tables outside (dirty) and it was clear that the staff had had a very busy morning. The outside area was really pretty and I really liked the feel of the space. There were dog water bowls and a box of dog treats and all the guests seemed to be very happy. We sat down before going inside to ask for a menu. I was instructed that they were not serving lunch only breakfast. Fair enough. I ordered inside a few minutes later. This was slightly painful with a member of staff calling out for a colleague to assist him as he was busy. Again, fair enough. After sitting back down, the same member of staff came over a few minutes later to tell me that they were no longer serving food. I commented that he had just charged me £29 for food. I was slightly baffled as he hadn’t told me this a few minutes before. He apologised to me and asked me if I had paid to which I replied yes. He then moved over to another table and told them that they were out of key ingredients for food and so couldn’t serve them. I appreciate it must’ve been a busier day than anticipated so they were running out of food perhaps? More people sat themselves down outside. Got menus. Got comfortable. Went inside to order and then were disappointed to be told that the venue was not serving food after 13.30. I would have personally liked to see a member of staff approaching these potential customers rather than allowing them sit and settle. It also baffled me that a venue that regularly serves lunch and is open some evenings would close on a potentially busy bank holiday with lots of foot fall. But I’m sure they have their valid reasons. However, I believe we saw at least 5 groups be turned away in 30 minutes. It was especially awkward when said groups would stare at us and another table eating! Our food arrived. In fairness it was delicious. We both ordered the full breakfasts. The sausages and bacon were great quality and the toasted sourdough was incredible. The beans could have used a little less time in the microwave or some water as they were dried out but no complaints. I was very impressed. No napkins were put down with the food so we had to go inside to ask for these but I believe the staff were getting ready to close. By the end of our experience there was only one table left inside. After they had left and our plates had been cleared I heard the front door slam and looked up to see it closed. I couldn’t help but giggle at this not to subtle sign of closure which did kind of sum up my experience. Overall the food was very tasty and the feel of the restaurant is lovely but I did feel slightly uncomfortable. This would not stop me from visiting again if I was ever in the area.

We had a great lunch today the food is always full of flavour and supports local producers. the food is good value.The staff are very friendily and accomodating nothing is too much trouble. The brownies are to die for

Checked the website before driving there, says open until 3pm on Mondays. Arrived at 1.20pm to be told they don’t serve lunch after 1pm. Absolutely ludicrous! Who does that? So we left and won’t be back.

great place, have eaten very well here before. menu has fair prices and food and coffee vg. however today they decided to close the kitchen for food when tried to order at 1.25pm and refused to warm up some soup (on special board). disappointing! many walkers were left hungry. there were several staff there and not supposed to close until 3pm on Mon :(

We have been to Grub and Gumption five times during a period of annual leave during September 2021. This review encompasses all of those visits. There is no doubt in my mind that Grub and Gumption is one of the best cafe/restaurant in West Sussex....

Fantastic food, service and great specials board. A little bit off the beaten path but the best ones always are and always worth finding 😉

Lovely experience at this cafe due to very polite staff and even better coffee! Situated beautifully near the beach which meant we could walk down with our coffee! I will return.

I have been here 4 times in 3 days, having just discovered the place. Perfect flat white coffee, and had the very tasty yoghurt bowl with seeds and muesli this morning. A great find.

We happened upon Grub and Gumption on our way to Littlehampton and decided to stop for breakfast - what a great decision! Lovely food, beautifully cooked but we were really taken by the relaxed and friendly vibe of everyone there ... we will definitely be back! Highly recommended

A second review for us, we love coming here, it’s our favourite local cafe for breakfast. The poached eggs on sour dough toast and the G & G breakfasts are delicious. Coffee is lovely and it’s got such a nice feel to the place, inside and out. Special mention to the staff, particularly Penny and Marjory, really lovely ladies. The owners are great too. Keep it up!

We haven’t been back to Grub and Gumption since not long after it first opened and we really enjoyed our lunch.

It was our first time here and it was not disappointing. Good menu with not too much choice and interesting. My mushroom toast was rich and flavourful. My friend's hummus with tzatsiki and Olives was also tasty. We didn't need it but we had cake to follow. The coffee suited my friend as she likes a strong brew but I found it a tad too strong for me so if you do prefer something you don't have to stand a spoon in get some extra hot water or milk.

Been to Grub and Gumption four or five times now. Food is excellent. Quite quirky, very modern menu. When you choose what sounds like a healthy option you know it will be really tasty. We had a hummus, roasted veg and Halloumi sandwich - very nice indeed. Coffee is really good too.

I dined here for a brunch before we walked along the coast and I chose it entirely off of the positive reviews. The people spoke the truth, it really is very nice. The prices are fair and everything is fresh and clearly off a high quality which is great. I opted for the vegetarian breakfast and I would choose it again.

Why have we waited so long to try this little gem of a cafe. After a good walk we decided to stop for a coffee, then I spotted their special board - Hot Smoked Salmon and poached egg, my all time favourite, but could it compete with the best I’ve had so far down under in NZ. The quick answer is YES and by a long way. The salmon was just divine, the best I’ve had in a very long time, and that’s saying something because I always order it if it’s on the menu, as Tina Turner would say ‘simply the best’.

I had my first visit to G&G; last weekend and I wish I'd gone sooner. The food tastes amazing, the coffee was perfect and the cafe itself is wonderfully decorated. The staff too were wonderful and couldn't have been more attentive.

Just been to Grub & Gumption for breakfast with my wife, and I have to say it’s possibly the best breakfast we had locally for years.

I ordered a standard plate of poached eggs and it came out as the most beautiful breakfast I have ever had! the waiters and waitresses were exceptionally kind and food was impeccable i will defiantly recommend this to everyone. :-)

Wow, this place is somewhere I have been looking for all my life, my wife is lucky she married me (some may say) before I discovered this little beauty, I honestly couldn’t think of anything negative to say about this little gem, in fact if it wasn’t for my wife and(fussy) little daughter I would probably have asked to move in!! Now being a normal man in his forties there are rumours that fly around about men of my age being a bit grumpy and fussy... well I loved everything about it here, the decor reminded me of travelling, the music was spot on, the staff.... well I didn’t know people like this existed, what a team and you could see the relationship that Lottie has with her staff, the old saying was never so true “happy staff happy customers” I’ve never felt so comfortable.

Lovely independent restaurant. Breakfast was fresh and crushed avocado and spinach was really tasty. The other breakfasts our friends had were also very good. Service was cheerful and you can sit outside if weather is good. Short walk from beach too.

This was my first time at this cafe. I had sourdough toast with crushed advocado, spinach and topped with two poached eggs. Sprinkled over it were pumpkin and sunflower seeds and chilli flakes. It was a lovely combination of flavours. The staff were also nice and attentive

Only had toast but the best bread ever is used at this restaurant which I've found out you can put an order in the day before and they will get it for you! Husband had a home made shortbread which was lovely, staff and atmosphere is lovely here!!

Nice food, really different. The only reason it isn’t a 5 star review is because I don’t like sourdough bread and nearly all the breakfasts come with it. Nice outdoor seats and friendly staff

Popped in here on Easter Sunday after it caught our eye (we had originally intended to go to the pub!). Staff were friendly from the beginning and service was great. My husband had avocado, poached eggs and smoked salmon on sourdough toast and he said it was delicious. I had the breakfast and it was fantastic - one of the best I have had. A lovely lady (I think she was the owner/manager) chatted to us at several points throughout our visit (we had our children with us and she stopped to ask about our littlest who is just 6 weeks old) and it was great to have such a friendly interaction.

I have been quite a few times now with friends, my husband or just me and the dog.

I live in EP but first time here with girlfriend who loves this place. I love the decor, seating, ambience. I ordered the veggie breakfast which is a slice of sourdough, medium flat mushroom, 3 small cherry tomatoes, ramekin of baked beans, spoon of mashed avocado & same homous. Having just been on a 3 hour dog walk I was hungry & this was lunchtime. I felt this breakfast was overpriced & left hungry. A veggie sausage etc would have added some more solidness to the meal.

Fourth visit, the standard has consistently been excellent, the food is not bog standard and yes you pay a little more but it’s worth it !

Make a point of going for breakfast way down near the Sea in East Preston, well worth the trip. They really care about what you will get to eat and drink and there are wide choices of not your normal dishes to choose from.

Enjoyed a lovely bowl of sweet corn & butternut squash chowder....served with a choice of freshly cut bread & butter....well worth the £5.95 but could have been a tad warmer but we enjoyed it in spite of this....lovely fresh locally sourced produce...delicious coffee...cakes look amazing but as yet too full to try...always friendly service...the owner is hands on...very nice atmosphere, efficiently run...highly recommend

Lovely cafe/restaurant, friendly staff, good choice of delicious food on menu - we visited for lunch unfortunately this time the soup was served lukewarm, perhaps a Catering Thermometer should be used to ensure the soup is served hot.

This is one of my favourite places to eat. They offer gluten and dairy free meals and are very accommodating to any dietary requirements you have. Run by lovely people, very tasty food and a cosy atmosphere

Went for an impromptu Wednesday lunch in January. Fantastic lunch menu, my mum and I both items from the main menu, but the specials board looked exquisite and I shall certainly choose from that on my next visit. The bread was super delicious and we finished off with tea and cake, the brownie was the business and I know cake ;-). Aside from the wonderful food, the service was spot on, friendly and easy going. I look forward to visiting for brunch soon and taking advantage of the great outside seating on a sunny day. Great Job!

Whilst on a rare day off I popped into the village for a relaxing coffee. Coffee was excellent, but very disappointed there was not a newspaper to read. I will go again but make sure I take a book next time

Walk on the beach to blow the cobwebs away after a festive New Years Eve celebration, followed by the most AMAZING breakfast enjoyed by all of us, each choosing different meals, for me the scrambled egg and smoked salmon excelled, probably the best I've tasted. Happy new year and a successful 2019

Cosy little cafe with a warming touch from the staff. The G&G; breaky is amazing every item is fresh and delicious. The tomato and brown sauce is to die for put Heinz and HP to shame. Can never decide on what to order so will be returning to try all

Tried this place for coffee and snack astonishingly charge 40p extra for soya. Making it just under £4 for coffee alone. Complained to waiter and he apologised but no offer of refund.

visited for small family gathering, it was a little cramped in the back room and a little frustrating because larger table are at front was taken by only a couple of people and we had to squeeze round much smaller table but not the owners fault. food was excellent, nice that they had a couple of vegan options and good attention to detail. would definitely go back but aim for quieter time

We visited Grub and Gumption on Saturday night for their French themed supper night.

We had a fantastic meal at Grub and Gumption it was a French theamed evening on entry we was greeted by the owner Lottie who gave us a warm welcome and introduced our waitress Margaret ,service and food was exceptional all wines recommended accompanied the meal perfectly looking forward to a return visit .

I am so impressed with this cafe. It's in a lovely sunny spot in the morning which was perfect for our breakfast. I had the yoghurt pot which had honey, thick creamy yoghurt, granola and fresh fruit. It was absolutely delicious! The coffee was great, the staff were very friendly and gave good service. My husband had a cooked breakfast and enjoyed it. We sat outside with our dog as it was a nice day,I'm not sure whether dogs are allowed inside or not. The toilet was nice, clean and modern. All in all a brilliant visit and I would definitely return.

Really good, tasty food and friendly service. Felt really satisfied with my veggie lunch. This small establishment has outside seating and hidden depths inside. Dog friendly, not wildly expensive and worth a visit.

This is our go to place for breakfast as a family, for coffee and cake for my business and brunch with girlfriends. I have filled countless loyalty cards but a, yet to leave a review. I’m shocked to hear of people complaining about cold food or lack of customer service because this husband and wife team with their front of house troop of friends are the loveliest bunch and nothing is too much trouble.

We came across this café by chance when we rented a cottage in East Preston. The staff are very friendly and one feels welcome straight away. We had an excellent breakfast there, not at all heavy and greasy as in some cafés. We also looked at the menu and saw that there are a lot of healthy and interesting things to eat many of which are obviously based on dishes discovered by the owners during their travels.

Had a excellent lunch in Cafe Rouge in Bromley.Miriam and her staff are also excellent.Food very good

We were passing and in need of a drink and lunch. The pub was considered but the cafe looked interesting. We were warmly welcomed by the owner who went through the menu options. All very thoughtfully designed to tempt you back for more. Perhaps slightly more expensive than I would pay for a small lunch, but delicious. (We live in the north of UK and prices less expensive). We were told the menu will change regularly and there is a specials board. Shame the tea was not in a pot. We don't dunk teabags at home. They have a loyalty card stamped each time a drink is purchased. Nice touch

This is a relatively new eaterie in the lovely East Preston village located very close to the seaside...decor very much in keeping with the sea....great outside seating area, very boaty....driftwood ,sails & rope....inside lots of comfy cushions & you can see straight into the kitchen....everything clean & fresh...

We were all happy with the food and service here and it catered for all our varying tastes. Very popular so much so you can't always get a seat!
