No volveré a oscurecer tu puerta ¡Terreno! 3/5

Muchas gracias Jamie y equipo!

Popped in yesterday for the first time as was passing. Nice coffee, pretty friendly staff and seemed like a nice range of food and snacks available. Inside was comfortable and clean. Only thing I’d criticise is the bite sized flap jack sweet treat I bought to go with my coffee felt overpriced at a £1. 50p was probably a fairer price.

Not been here in a few months. It’s been refurbished and just feels cramped. The staff were clueless. No bright welcome of old, just ignore you for three minutes while they all appear busy doing nothing or making coffee painfully slowly. I asked for a takeaway after the awkward minutes of being ignored. Still no sign of it being made after nine minutes. I gave up, asked for a refund (I’m sure I got 20p less than I paid, but may be mistaken). I did get to sample some random free cake with no label while I was being ignored or waiting. I wasn’t impressed. Who stole the character of this place? Used to have a fantastic range of cakes, pastries and savory - just a few cookies, and a sorry looking lemon drizzle cake on show. If I’m passing again soon, I’ll try again, and review, but to be honest I won’t go out of my way!

I had black coffee prepared by AeroPress. I could smell its bad smell before I tasted it. It seemed to me the kit was uncleaned and old! Not sure where that came from! I could NOT drink it! This is a nice little coffee house in Kemptown, which does the basics really well! It has a great modern but low key atmosphere and the staff are always friendly. The sandwiches are simple and limited in range (a vegan, a vegetarian and a meat option...with some cakes) but they are always absolutely delicious. The coffee is artisanal and very good indeed. I come here to work, relax and grab a snack. Well worth a visit....

The place has a new layout which is nice. The till system is weird as you cant actually see what you're being charged for which I don't really like, especially as they use contactless payments for cards. A screen is needed to show what is being added to the order and the total price to pay.

The guys working there are probably the most polite, concerned and friendly you're likely to meet. I'm not saying both locals and travelers feel comfortable there, but I did see one lady tourist kick off her shoes and curl up with a newspaper! I felt it was astonishingly good value too. Been to Ground lots of times over the years - sometimes meet other school mums here for a coffee after school run & usually been fine. One Sunday morning I fancied a proper coffee shop coffee so went out specially with my little boy to Ground. It seemed a bit chaotic making the drinks & the guys were chatting a lot behind the bad so maybe they were distracted. We waited a long time for my latte to be made, during which time my son started coughing & choking - I said excuse me a couple of times and was part way through saying,'could I have a glass of water' when the bearded guy (sorry if they all have beards I didn't notice!) pointed abruptly at a jug behind me without saying anything & turned back to his chat. Got some water, son fine.. Still waiting for coffee at the end of the counter.. Could see it was very messy &dirty; behind there with dirty cups etc. the guy made coffees for people who'd ordered after me... Eventually he said,'' soya latte" and put a very light feeling cup in front of me & turned back to his mate... I wanted a sprinkle of chocolate on my latte as is my usual practice, but the guy was unapproachable & the shaker was right in front of me so I just took the lid off my half empty cup & sprinkled some chocolate on. For some reason this was enough to get the attention of the guy, who looked at me like I'd just taken a massive liberty & muttered "oh yeah right, go ahead, you just help yourself love..., you just go for it." I said 'pardon?' And he just turned away!! I felt awful!! I said,'excuse me? Have I done something wrong?' He laughed and said, 'no it's fine, don't worry about it' shaking his head. I said 'but you seem annoyed?' He said 'no I'm not just leave it!' & turned away. I slunk out of Ground with my son and a half empty, luke warm coffee, £3 lighter and feeling confused & upset.... Think I'll be going to meet my friends for a post-school run coffee somewhere else in future... :-(

This end of Kemp Town is definitely the better end. Good coffee is pretty tough to get but they lovingly make it here. As a fanatical coffee enthusiast and newbie to Kemptown, I was very excited to discover my local coffee shop Ground with the highest expectations. Even upon entry, I found that I was warmly greeted with smiles all round and was instantly put at ease. I made my way to the bar to order my drink and was served immediately and efficiently. It was as clear as day that the staff take their work very seriously with passion to ensure the coffee was of the best quality, which reflected brilliantly in my coffee choices of a flat white and a long black. Taking into consideration the quality of the coffee, I felt it was fantastic value for money; I have spent the same amount of money or more for coffee in endless amount of coffee shops and never found the coffee to be so delicious!

I am a great fan of Ground and regularly visit both Brighton and Hove branches. Recently I've noticed the standards in the Kemptown, Brighton cafe are dropping. This is a great shame. The coffee is, as always, really good but there is a bit of a "frat house" feel going on with some quite big characters behind the bar. Love a cafe with personality but not when it dominates and intrudes on the customers. Also hygiene standards from the lads are not good. A couple of times last week I saw sneezing while making coffee with no handwashing prior to sneezing and before continuing with coffee making. But even more off putting was that one of the more dominant baristas made a big deal of stroking a customer's dog and then, again, continued serving coffee without washing his hands. That really is not good. Please sort it out, Rick as I know what excellent standards you have and would expect from your staff. You are being let down at the moment I feel and it definitely feels like a boys' own club right now.

It is great for sitting with your computer with free wifi, however, they cannot make coffee at all. The first time I asked for a cappuccino and received a cold latte. It happened again the second time when I went in with my boyfriend, except his coffee was slightly hotter, and slightly frothier than mine, so this suggests that they are capable of making cappuccino's...just very sporadically. I think that f you are paying £2.50 for a coffee it should be one made by a well trained coffee enthusiast, rather than a laxadaisical student.

I left but not before telling the cashier that I would have drunk my coffee within 10 minutes. Small Batch website indicates that they close at 5.00 pm. BTW there were no other customers. Anyway, I went down the road and gave another coffee shop my business.

Unfortunately, even though there were many things right I'll be avoiding this place. The service was impeccable, good beer, perfect lighting and lovely music. So what was wrong? A coven of aggressive women believing they ran the place because they'd booked a table. At their request the music, that I'd been enjoying, was turned off so they could conduct their meeting whilst sipping peppermint tea. I'd suggest a pub isn't an ideal place for this sort of thing. Especially if you're hell-bent on spoiling the atmosphere for everyone else. Sadly, they're regulars.
