Grocer and Grain in Brighton and Hove

I would strongly advise against shopping at this store and urge others to do the same. Not long ago, one of the staff members / owner treated my mum in an absolutely appalling manner. To provide some context, my mum is a sweet, kind, elderly lady with a disability, and this man’s behaviour was completely unacceptable. He clearly has anger issues and thought it was appropriate to take it out on someone half his size. My mum, who has mobility difficulties, came to this shop to buy some milk. She mentioned that the oat milk was a bit expensive (which it clearly was compared to other places in Brighton, really overpriced). Her comment was neither rude nor unkind—just an observation. Shockingly, the man became angry, snatched the milk from her hand, and told her to leave, refusing to sell it to her. This kind of behaviour is not just ugly—it’s disgraceful. There are plenty of small shops in Brighton with kind, compassionate staff and owners who treat their customers with respect. I hope people think twice before supporting a business that allows this kind of behaviour. Shocking and unacceptable.

Absolutely delicious spinach and feta pastry from a really friendly owner. The sandwiches looked so fresh and delicious too! Very reasonably priced

The manager is very friendly and welcoming and the shop has a very warm atmosphere. Great fresh products and fresh made pastries.

This place is a little gem. Try the salami sandwich from the fridge and ask for it toasted. Great pastries and coffee as well.

We at The Treason Show absolutely love this shop/cafe! Lovely staff and very good food and drinks. We love a cup of tea and a brownie or snack. We will always come here when rehearsing nearby. Cannot recommend enough for a nice snack and kind service !

I was going to buy some eggs and as I was checking one was broken and it created a mess. Being a response person I told the owner who was serving that day he reacted very rudely and refused to sell me the eggs.

Great produce served by a true gentleman. The fruit & veg has always been a high standard, the homemade sauces (pesto, tzatziki) are excellent and brownies are addictive. Lucky to have such a great shop on my doorstep.

A menudo me subo a una de sus baguettes. Trabajo en la estación de ferrocarril en la carretera, por lo que la ubicación es perfecta. Su pan es tan fresco, junto con los ingredientes. Hermosa tienda de delicatessen escondida con una deliciosa variedad de pasteles caseros y comida saludable. Un café encantador también. ¿Tienes curiosidad de que un crítico anterior no haya podido ver el signo perfectamente normal sobre los perros? ¿Es bastante prominente, y seguramente es obvio no llevar a un perro a una tienda de comestibles? ¡El encantador comerciante me trajo mi café afuera mientras esperaba con mi perro! Muy recomendable.

My go to place for tiny cactus plants. Loads of different varieties and only £2.50. They do great coffee too!

Este hombre es de hecho abusivo. Tiene un cartel de minutos en su puerta con un cartel de "no perros" que no es visible cuando la puerta está abierta. Que era cuando entré con mi cockerpoo. Me dijo que los perros no estaban en voz alta. Empecé a salir pidiendo un café para llevar. Dijo abruptamente 'solo saca al perro' y luego dijo que estaba demasiado ocupado para hacer un café. . . Whilst visiting Brighton Pride Festival on Saturday 3rd my wife and I happened to notice Grocer and Grain with three table and chairs outside and we were able to be seated on one.We had a salami and cheese ciabatta (excellent) each plus coffee for £11.90.

This shop is like a gastronomic Narnia. It looks small on the outside but packs a mean punch with it's locally unrivalled choice of groceries, fresh food and sandwiches and beverages, not to mention the yummy selection of cakes. Also, they sell herbs and spices in any amounts that you need for that certain recipe. No more waste sitting at the back of the cupboard!

Great little shop for organic foods as well as delicious and reasonably priced soups and stews in the winter. Lovely owner and friendly staff.

I've been a regular at the Grocer and Grain for years now and that is mainly because of the excellent, friendly service and the very tasty food served there. There is a wide variety of sandwiches in ciabatta and baguette-style bread and a huge selection of organic products. The cakes are unique and light and the fridge section snacks are proper homemade food. Healthy nibbles and cooking ingredients are available in store along with fresh fruit and vegetables. Definitely worth a visit during lunchtime or just for getting yourself a treat.

The smoked chicken baguette is to die for! Such a lovely place. Lovely and quiet to sit at while enjoying a coffee. The quality of food and coffee is top notch!

Stopped off here for lunch before catching the train home after Pride weekend. We headed directly for this place as we have used it a few times over the years and the food is always excellent. Sandwiches are hand made and served in an assortment of delicious breads and baguettes. They also sell a lot of natural produce.

Dont work here if you are a young woman the manager has harassed my 18yr old daughter on a daily basis working there to the point where we have had to report him be warned !!!!

It's great having a organic supermarket so close and I do love to pop in to pick up some snacks or a piece of the lovely cake but it is pricey in here!

I nipped in here as I was in need of a coffee and sugar fix and I'm glad I did. The coffee was lovely and the cake was amazing,the staff are very friendly and like to strike up conversation with you which is good. They sell some really nice produce and most of it is locally sourced,no doubt I will return again.

Het kleine terras van dit winkeltje annex theeroom-pje ligt net buiten de hoofdstraat (Queensroad), dichtbij het station. Het heeft heerlijke koffie (helaas wel in paper cups, omdat die veelal meegenomen wordt) en jammie taarten (vegan). Fijn sfeertje.

One of the best things that's ever happened in Brighton. Loads of imaginative, delicious, healthy, very reasonably priced sweet & savoury things to take away (as well as a whole foods supermarket and warn drinks)

Best coffee cake I've ever had, and it was actually vegan! Well worth a visit for a snack on the train ride back to London or right then and there with their outside seating.

Would be interested to know the freshness of the food, as my tuna sandwich didn't smell or taste freshly made. Service with a smile is also a unfamiliar concept for the man running this "shop".
