Went on Monday 16th December as a family for a Christmas meal/drinks ( 15 of us in total), a large variety of meals and drinks were bought and enjoyed very much. Lovely local pub with a great atmosphere and fantastic staff, we will be returning again as a family.

This pub used to be a cosy, nice little local pub. It has recently been FILLED with huge digital advertising screens. They occupy such a ludicrously large amount of the wall space that from any seat you're pretty much guaranteed to be able to see 3 or 4. They have absolutely ruined the atmosphere and ambiance. Such a shame. Edit: For the head office, this is a local pub, not an "All Bar One" get the advertising screens out.

I don’t normally write restaurant reviews .. (as I feel you can just catch a place having a bad day sometimes?…) but I have to write about our The Grey Horse Sunday experience. No bad day here 😀 6 of us had Sunday lunch this Sunday and I have to say,it was the BEST Sunday roast I’ve had for years in a bar/restaurant. My hubby and I both had the triple meat roast,( Turkey, pork and beef) . It actually did come served exactly as the menu described.Beautiful tender meat. Every slice. Crispy roasties, creamy mash, and the veggies were fresh( not a frozen veg on the plate). Carrots, cabbage, broccoli, all cooked to perfection. Lots of tasty gravy-not gloopy. And Yorkshire pud…with extra roasties, Yorkshire pudsand gravy upon request… Can’t rate this place highly enough. It came served piping hot on a warmed plate which also gets a thumbs up from me. All in all a lovely afternoon.Lovely ambience in the bar too.. Will definitely return.

This was my first visit in maybe 20yrs in my home town. It’s always been great but can clearly see why its rival is dying a death. My visit to my old local was (to be polite) lackluster with staff that didn’t care and no mgt in site. So I took a venture to the Grey Horse, what a transformation! Alex the landlord was awesome, welcoming? Helen was understandably itching to get home, Jen (her family own half of Yark’shaaaa) and Vicky - who you can tell she runs it! - anyway what a great return great staff and good pub! Thank you team I did enjoy

Nice place which for years when it was the showplace for the local brewery Vaux of Sunderland which had a horse dray delivery until the brewery took the thirty shillings and left the area. It has good cheerful staff and has a pleasant feel to the place. Serves wholesome meals with deals at certain times during the week and mine host is not the grump who once was here but a pleasant fellow. As it is a bit of a walk for me from my place I haven't been too often recently but it is worth a visit, though at the price of the Single bells and coke fair made me wince during my last visit on Tuesday! They also have nice area as a beer garden and also outside seating if you can stand the north east weather for those of you with dogs it is more than considerate on that score - something that is hard to find in many places nowadays. Parking tends not to be a great problem as they have a large area at the side!

Ordered two meals. The chicken with cheese sauce was massive and my partner seemed to enjoy it. My tikka masala however, was bland, maybe 8 chicken bites, the sauce was a little thin, the poppadom was twice the size of the pocket pancake (supposed to be a naan) and no mango chutney - instead some yogurt based concoction which, apparently, is because of a menu change two weeks ago and not everything is available yet. Which is a shame cos I was really looking forward to the chutney. The redeeming point? The pint of Amstel. In my opinion, overpriced (which is the chains problem rather than the individual pub). I probably won't be back for food.

Having never been before I saw the favourable reviews and booked for Sunday lunch. When we entered my son said "Let's go somewhere else" because it was full of families with young children. Because I had booked, and didn't want to go back on my word, we stayed: big mistake. This pub has a welcoming feel to it and the staff are very friendly. Also the drinks are fine, but the lunch was nowhere near the standard we are used to. They had run out of all meat except for beef, which didn't bother us, but I could hardly chew through it. For quantity it was a ten, but the quality was a two. Tough meat aside the vegetables and gravy were very poor and the roast potatoes must have been in the oven for two hours or reheated. Only the Yorkshire pudding was edible. The gravy was thick and gooey.

Absolute belter of a pub to watch the match, apart from one drawback...letting people reserve tables. It's that busy a pub I don't get the reservation of tables to watch football. Attended Christmas day. Pub had a lovely atmosphere for our Christmas Day family lunch. Staff were friendly. Started well from arrival - lovely starter and main but one issues with the main we waited for the gravy for the vegetarian meal and the steak and veg meal. We ended up having to request this. As we were full we felt we were unable to eat our desert and asked for this to be boxed which was agreed. We continued with our drinks while waiting for our coffee and mince pie. We were almost finished our drinks about 20 minutes later and had to go to the bar and ask about the coffee assuming the mince pies would also come with the coffee. Coffee and no mince pies. As we had to ask for three items we did not bother asking again and decided to ask for the bill and leave. I understand it was a very busy time but also we did pay a total of £261.00 + drinks on top for the meal for 4 people so I don't feel I am being unreasonable.

Would definitely come back, the only reason it's not a 5 is that my roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were burnt. Something else to note, they had loads of parking available which was a major plus! 09/03/2023 Update I went back to the grey horse and the yorkshore pudding and potatoes weren't burnt so I would now rate the whole thing was a 10/10. We've always enjoyed visiting The Grey Horse, and never had an issue until today. We called in today as a family of four, two adults and two kids, for a late lunch. As normal we found a table, ordered drinks, and returned to order our food. The girl behind the bar was as lovely as ever; we call in every Saturdays for a drink and she always goes out of her way to make us feel welcome, and she's great with the kids. It appears an error was made when ordering part of our meal, as we had asked for nachos with beef, but when they came there was no beef on the nachos. No big deal, but we raised this with another member of staff, the older lady, as she was serving us. We expected a polite response regarding the error, and maybe an offer to rectify the mistake. As I said, it wasn't such a big deal, however what followed is quite possibly the worst example of customer service I've ever experienced. The lady said, and I quote "well you must have ordered the wrong thing". I questioned this, as both myself and my wife were stood at the bar with menu in hand, and pointed to what we wanted, as well as asking quite clearly for nachos with beef. As noted, it's no big deal and we weren't particularly bothered as we understand mistakes can happen, however when told by the rude lady that we had ordered the wrong thing I countered with "so you are saying it's our fault that you have brought the wrong food out". The response from the lady was "yes, it's your fault" who then turned and walked away from us mid conversation. I literally couldn't believe somebody could be so rude. In difficult times we have chosen to visit The Grey Horse over many other local options, and handed over our hard earned money. The very least we expect is common decency and manners from staff. The young girl behind the bar was brilliant, hence two stars rather than one, however the older lady who served us left us amazed with her brazen rudeness. No attempt was made to rectify the mistake, or offer an apology. After we had finished eating we sat and finished our drinks for 10 minutes or so as we had been joined by some family members. At no point was our table attended to, to remove dirty plates, and the ice cream for the kids that we had ordered never arrived. Maybe the lady was avoiding us having realised how rude she had been. This has totally put us off returning for our weekly Saturday drinks. We were due to stay in The Grey Horse today with the family members we met up with, but instead the six of us went down the road to The Black Bull, which is likely to become our new Saturday venue.

The place itself was a bit rundown upstairs, toilets were awful, slippy and hand drier didn't work. Could do with a bit money spent. We were here with our cheese cart as it was a present for my sisters wedding. Pity the bailiff came the same night and locked the gates. Had a nightmare getting our stuff out. Shame really as we had a great time up and downstairs

An aspirational menu that never really delivers. The food promises a lot but in reality we found it to be mean in their portions and use of ingredients. A couple of items were unavailable on the day of our visit too. And to add to the disappointment one of the plates was very old and the milk jug was chipped. Hardly a very inspiring start. In addition, the whole dining area was just a little grubby on the walls and windowsills. We were seated next to tall pot plant which keeled over every time we brushed past it! As we dined we observed a poor woman sit on a chair which broke! Finally, as a person with hearing loss the acoustics of the place is difficult, it is extremely echo-y and noisy, and not really a place where you can have a conversation. Coffee was great, food very mediocre and mean and the ambience was poor, so we won’t be back.
