I had my 60th Birthday celebration at the Green Man last Friday with family and friends. Mark and Becky closed the main bar for our event and provided a fantastic range of food for us. The tables were groaning with food, way more than for the 40 people I paid for and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating on the night. If you want a proper pub for a meal, drink or event, I'd recommend The Green Man to you.

Have been to this pub numerous times. Service is consistently welcoming and helpful. The selection of home cooked food on offer lunchtimes and evenings is always tasty and great value. Food arrives in good time without ever feeling rushed. Portions are hearty. The pub has a large garden with play facilities for children and numerous tables. There is a car park on site. Location in the small village of Great Wymondley just outside Hitchin and close to both Letchworth and Stevenage is very pleasant. This venue is definitely worth a try

Previously visited this pub/restaurant and recommended this to friends. They were surprised by how varied the menu was with so many choices to chose from. When the meals arrived they was good in presentation, they tasted first class and were very enjoyable by all. We sampled the desert menu, and was again please with the food. The price was good. Overall all of agreed it was a good meal and would be comin back

We had booked a table for 5, but on arrival we were told we could not have the table reserved for us because in the diary it had been recorded that we required a table for 4. So we were turned away!! …as seemingly it was too much trouble to move a chair to provide a table for 5. The diary says 4 you can’t have a table for 5. Surly, rude and totally unhelpful.

We visited this pub, in 2008, and after hearing it was under new management, curiosity got the better of us, and we gave it another look. Great looking pub, in a prime position, with parking to the front. Sadly the inside does not live up to it. The bar on the right, is laid out as a restaurant, so we went into the bar on the left. The guy behind the bar, asked what we were having. As neither pump was branded, we had to ask what they actually did. This bar is grim. Like something from the 1940s. No music, cold, no atmosphere. Unfriendly staff, who basically ignored us. With so many pubs closing in the UK every year, and so many good pubs, surrounding this, and Hitchin down the lane, I congratulate this pub, operating to this standard.

We returned having realised that food was again being served at the Green Man. We are very pleased we did. The bar have been redecorated and the tables are not so close together, so it feels more spacious. We enjoyed a lunch time special which is a main and a dessert for £11.25. We are so glad that we can reinstate this pub as a lunch venue.

Last minute birthday dinner and we were sat straight away. Fab menu for both the adults and child, with the specials being game meat; a delicious introduction if you've never had wild boar or venison. Looked after by the lovely (and very patient) Tom. Also very pleasant for solo diners; have had many a solo Sunday dinner there and was looked after brilliantly

Ate here with gf and her parents. I had steak and ale pie as did her dad, gf had giant yorkshire with cumberland sausage filling, her mum had a jacket potato with chilli. All portions were large with plenty fresh veg or salad and an additional jug of gravy and all were tasty. I had a mandarin cheesecake which was also really nice. We had two rounds so in total 4 main courses a dessert, 4 pints and 4 medium glasses of wine - the bill was 80 quid which I thought was a bargain. The food is simple and unpretentious but it is tasty and fantastic value. The service is also excellent - I made a mistake ordering chips instead of mash, the guy who served us overheard our conversation and a few minutes later brought over a side of mash. The £10.95 meal deal for a main course and a dessert is especially good value and it's no surprise the place is packed, mainly with older people.

Some two years ago I reviewed this pub as a "Little Gem", and have frequented it every two weeks on a Saturday night for the past two years. However since the turn of the year, the manager now likes to close the pub at approximately 9 pm if it is quiet. On a couple of occasions recently last night being one, my partner and I have been the only two people in the pub eating , when this happens you are made to feel uncomfortable by the manager hovering about, knowing full well he wants you out the door to lock up. One can understand he does not want to keep a basically empty pub open, however when you think we spend well over a £1000 p a with him there would be a little "customer care". I explained this last night and stated we would no longer be eating there on a Saturday night, I was told "well that's your choice."

OK so although the review is not 5* please bear in mind that the establishment serves a valuable function in accommodating the older generation ( yes I am in there at 55 years young) I took an elderly friend of mine (94 years young) out for a spot of early xmas lunch on the basis of rave reviews by several other elderly friends who dine there on a regular basis for lunch as a group. So please bear in mind that this would not be my preferred dining venue for lunch against the fact that lots of older folks love it and sing praises. We did arrive without reservation and bearing in mind the regular 'older group attendees' we were accommodated with a table for two. The menu is fairly simple and straightforward albeit I did observe pre-packed re-heated fare and to be fair the fish and chips we had was OK. They have pre-set menus for those over 55 years (very refreshing) and I would say that the staff were very welcoming albeit they were saying things like (not to us) 'she hasn't ordered her usual pudding!!'That degree of familiarity would not suit me but the 'elderly groups' did apparently appreciate the interaction. would it be my choice of dining venue again? Probably not BUT this establishment serves a purpose perfectly for those who like it - Many thanks to the staff they were good.

This is a lovely country pub serving Fabulous food with a friendly service. The venison burger was cooked to perfection as was all the food. Immaculate toilets too. I recommend booking on a weekend and the parking is a little limited. Am going back asap as I was too full to try a dessert and feel I've missed out.

We have been here on a number of occasions and had the over 55's lunch, we have also taken our daughter and grandson there for a meal. Our grandson has special needs and the staff couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful, we have also been for a lovely quiet Sunday lunch. The food has always been of brilliant quality, hot and tasty. This is most defiantly our favourite eating place and would recommend it to all. We wish it was just down the road and we could call it our local. Well worth a visit but recommend booking.

I had visited the Green Man on a couple of occasions before and whilst in the area arranged for a group of us to have a meal there. It's a traditional pub with a good selection of food on the menu, suitable for all ages. Excellent portion sizes, well cooked and very friendly service. When I came to pay I had a very pleasant surprise at the size of the bill; if it was in my home county I would have expected to have paid far more. If I lived closer it would definitely become my local. Fabulous pub, food and staff - please don't change a thing!

I have been coming here for a few years now and love it. It has a traditional pub menu with none of the fuss that you sometimes get from pubs and restaurants in the Hitchin area. Food is fantastic, service very good. Great value too. Please don't change a thing!

Recently took our in-laws for a meal here, having recently just moved to the area. We were looking for a 'local' pub/restaurant we could eat at now and again. All 4 of us left over half of our food. I appreciate it was only £7.50 for steak & chips. My mother - in - law's 'well done' steak was still pink inside. A medium rare at best. Vegetables took over 3/4 of the plate, cold and looked pale. To me they looked like straight out of a can (my opinion). Just an unpleasant meal and we all had 4 different things. We won't be returning and will keep searching for a local pub. Very disappointing.

Fantastic value for money, lovely food and friendly staff, what more could you ask for when you meet your friends for a lovely lunch without having to break the bank. If you have a large group book early and let the staff know what everyone would like from the special over 55s menu that you can download quite easily from the site - that will make the staff happy and cut down on the waiting time for your meal, also if everyone gets a reminder of what they ordered for lunch you can be sure of having a really good time. The roast dinner was very tasty and a really good portion, that just left a little room for the traditional pudding!

Been here before and it was good back then, hence why we visited again. This is a nice little pub set in the Hertfordshire countryside. Sunday roasts are good and plentiful and very reasonably priced at under £9 each. Highly recommend here if you fancy a drive out and we Will definitely come back here again.

Very friendly and welcoming. Well kept beer, Excellent menu with daily specials boards, including one for the over 55's - main and pud £6.50 I think. Lots of custom from retired folk for this at lunchtimes so it can be wise to book (by phone). My aged mum loves taking us there for a bit of banter with the staff. My favourite? Steak pie or big sausages in monster Yorkshire pud. Pleasant garden with both shade and full sun (when available). Decent parking and can be made part of good, local rambles.

One of my favourite pubs for a meal. Friendly staff and uncomplicated pub menu. The mixed grill needs a big appetite. Also does weekday evening special prices and over 55s menu at lunch time. You may need to book for peak times. Also note it is not open for food all day and check time the food starts in the evening (7pm?)

We haven't been to this pub restaurant for years but on a whim we called in on the way home last week. We had an excellent lunch from their Over 55s lunch time menu served promptly in a very relaxed atmosphere. The two course meal costs £6.50 per head and is excellent value for money. Needless to say we shall return and with friends.

Having been to different pubs in different places for many years, this might be my favourite pub ever. Absolutely packed at 5pm on a Sunday afternoon. Everyone smiling. Great staff and great food. I couldn't be happier.

The best local pub. Fantastic hosts... so welcoming, even for someone who doesn't go there that often. Beautiful old pub with nice garden. Highly recommended for a beer or two.

We visited early Saturday evening, such a wonderful experience. Great food, served in a timely manner and fantastic service from Toni who made us feel very welcome. The addition of a small soft play area was a hit with our children too.

Earlier today I dropped my dog at the Groomer in Vanstone Parks Garden Centre, my car to the car wash guys then went into the cafe after a look around the garden centre. It was just after noon. I ordered an omelette with salad and crisps with a pot of tea. Paid for my order and sat outside with my plant pot which had my order number on. The waitress came out with a pot of tea, going well so far! When the waitress brought my order it was an omelette on a rather large plate! I asked where the salad was and was advised this it the breakfast menu, you don’t get anything with it then walked away. I thought I’d read the menu incorrectly until the lady who also sat outside was served an omelette with enough salad you could say it had its own garden! What a pity the service wasn’t a patch on it as when the previous owners/ managers ran the Orchard Cafe. The Groomer did a lovely job on my dog and the car valets made my car sparkle. Just been let down by the cafe’ won’t be going there again

First visit to The Jester... Friendly welcome. Quick & efficient service. Food: Superb roast, a well presented hearty plate. Chicken stuffed with spinach, roasties, Yorkshire pudding with vegetables on the side. My partner had the Roast Pork which was equally tasty. Honey comb cheesecake didn’t touch the sides! A delight not to have to cook Sunday lunch, thank you all. We will be back 🙂
