Green Man in North Hertfordshire

First of all - I can’t comment on the food here because we had to get out of the place ASAP. Stopped in on a Monday to ask whether they had any rooms available for private hire for my recently deceased father’s wake. I spoke to a lovely young member of stuff who kindly said they don’t have private rooms, but small groups are welcome to take over an area, non private, for food and drinks. I visited the next day to show my Mother the pub. This time, we spoke to a short, balding, bespectacled gentleman. After greeting him, I explained the situation and my father’s passing, and that we were here to enquire about hosting a group to celebrate his life. Without one word of greeting, compassion, or basic hospitality, he snapped back “nah we don’t do wakes. Don’t need to do them. Look how busy we are, no need for them…” I began to reply “oh we came in yesterday and ….” and he interrupted with “no, no wakes here, don’t need them”. Then glared back at us in a “what are you doing here and why are you still in my pub” sort of way. We just stood there, stunned at his rudeness, and walked out shocked that someone who works in the hospitality industry can be so lacking in the basics. It would appear from reading other reviews, this is not a one off encounter. What a shame that such a beautiful pub, with many wonderful members of staff, seems to be managed or led by a man with such an awful disposition. I hope that when he goes through a traumatic life moment he is met with a rather different experience….

Great restaurant with a good bar. Nice snug corners and a great atmosphere in the restaurant. The indoor areas are airy and pleasant and the garden area is great with a nice view and outside bar area. We were served by Rosie who was very welcoming, friendly and attentive. Great service. A couple of good vegan options. Good selection of beers and cocktails.

Absolutely brilliant pub. Food delicious and property welcoming, well maintained and clean. Our waitress Sam was great. Nothing too much trouble, checked for food allergies and made suggestions for alternative dressing for my friends meal. Will certainly visit again and recommend to family and friends. Absolutely amazing experience at this restaurant. Food was absolutely delicious and exactly how it was ordered. Visited for lunch on 20th April, food and service was okish. Realised we had been overcharged. After much twoing and froing, this was supposedly sorted!!! Only to find afterwards, more money was taken from our account. Have tried to contact them by phone, and Facebook messenger, their lack of response implies to me, that this establishment is either up to no good, or just couldn't care less! We will be revisiting, but only to get reimbursed!

The drinks were good and the food was tasty but we waited quite a long time for it to arrive and the pub didn't seem overly busy. When the starter arrived the sourdough bread was missing which we had to ask for. Waited quite a while for the main courses to arrive. When they did arrive they were lukewarm at best. Why they were only lukewarm when we had waited so long, I have no idea. At no point did any of the staff check with us if everything was correct. Not a great experience and we are unlikely to visit again.

My partner and I have been regular patrons of the Green Man for several years. We visited last Sunday for lunch and were presented with a “ new menu”. We had always opted for either roast pork or turkey, both of which have gone. We had stopped requesting the beef option before , having found it tough to eat on occasion. It looked as though the replacement menu has been designed with the priority of reducing cost to the restaurant , and we did not enjoy it. Large chunks of bread with a tasteless spread were brought to the table, though not requested. Whilst fully appreciating the pressures on the hospitality business, this was all very disappointing. The waiting staff at the Green Man are always helpful and friendly, but we will not return

We went to the Green Man to celebrate a special occasion and went for the pub classic cod and chips. The food was great, the atmosphere was great, and Ella was a wonderful hostess. We are never disappointed when we head over to the Green Man. Five stars.

Visited over the years and always had a good meal, unfortunately this time was a different experience! We were greeted with a smile and told we could sit in the bar area as the restaurant was full (it was in fact half full!) however, this was not a problem for us and placed our order - starters and main courses x 3. We waited and waited and ended up having to chase our food more than once - being told it was on the way. After an hour we left without sight of any food. I did say to a member of the wait staff that honesty is best and they should let customers know if they’re short staffed. I was told that the wait was in fact due to the kitchen staff getting used to the new menu! Chefs should know what they’re cooking??? Also, the majority of fabric covered chairs were heavily stained and the decor is in need of some tlc. Sadly won’t be retuning.

Had a lovely evening with the girls! Out waitress Charlotte was so attentive and helpful the entire night! I had the hake from the Specials and it was gorgeous! Would definitely recommend, will be returning!

I had not been to the Green Man for over two years as the food and service was so hit and miss. However, I thought I would give it another go as it could have improved. The service was good but the fish and chips and the chickpea curry were awful. But worse than that the restaurant looked really dirty. The carpet was filthy and the upholstered seats at out table were badly stained. The radiator which was beside our table was filthy with food and drink stuck to it. The state of the woodwork leading up to the toilets and including the toilet doors was in dire need of painting and looked dirty. I won't be going back again.

Poor food, unfriendly staff. We booked a table for 845 . We were immediately told all orders had to be straight away as the kitchen was closing, with an attitude that we were greatly inconveniencing them. Why have bookings at this time if they do clearly don’t want customers? V v poor food. Overpriced. Tasteless risotto.,The most bland undercooked Bakewell tart ever . Coffee machine was turned off so could not order coffee. Poor waitress tried to make us feel more welcome, embarrassed by behaviour of the head staff. They clearly don’t want your business so I would go elsewhere

We went for Sunday dinner and very disappointing. It took three hours to be served two courses and most food choices were unavailable, including roast potatoes! Maybe just unlucky, but I would not recommend.

We needed a place to bring a close friend and the Green Man was perfect. Perfect because Chloe was an amazing host. The food was awesome and the ambiance was very homely with the log fires on a cold winter night. Highly recommended!

I met up with friends here for a catch up and we had a great time. Erin advised us that there was a slight delay with the food orders as it was busy but that was no problem for us. The food was good and we felt safe with plenty of room between tables and sanitiser stations etc. I would,like to do a shout out for Erin, what a great girl, friendly, happy and really helpful. Relaxed afternoon Sunday roast... we booked for 1700, and have a large dog, who is always made welcome, we sit at a table bar area not the main restaurant. Pin is spotlessly clean, staff helpful and polite and atmosphere always lovely. Erin was fabulous, nothing was too much trouble and even though it was busy, she was attentive and is a great member of the green man team!

Very pleasant experience. Food good, staff friendly, service good and Covid safe. We all enjoyed our lunch in a very comfortable setting.

We were served today by Erin. She got us our drinks and brought over our menus quickly. She then gave us plenty of time to make out choices. We all chose something different and they all arrived together Jenny had chosen the rump steak which was cooked medium as recommended it was lovely cooked to perfection. Mum has the lamb shank which was delicious. I had the Hake which was cooked to perfection and superbly presented. We all had sweets and then Coffee. Every course was delicious. We were very impressed with the whole set up. The one way system and social distancing measures worked very well. Head chef Craig has really put a lot of thought into the special's menu. The grilled lamb chops tonight were perfectly on the rare side, really meaty and accompanied by some great vegetables. The minted baby potatoes were cooked just right, nice and soft. I didn't need the jus, the tomato and pepper puree was enough. Lovely night out, thanks to Sam and all the team.

Very pleasant visit to the Green Man in Offley, met with a smile and went straight to a table which had been cleaned and sanitized.Ordered drinks which turned up very quickly. The food we ordered was excellent, Slow cooked Belly pork was amazing and my daughter's lamb also cooked just right. Will definitely be back again soon as the burgers looked amazing.. 10 / 10

Lucy was so lovely and friendly and made us feel very comfortable and relaxed given the circumstances. She kept our drinks filled up and nothing was too much!

Firstly, we were greeted by a friendly gentleman who sat us down immediately. A friendly waitress came and took our order. I had the slow-cooked lamb shoulder, others had the lasagne. Food was excellent. No faults.

We have visited twice a in the last couple of months and on both occasions we have had amazing customer service and food, on the last visit our waitress Sam was outstanding...would 100% recommend 👍

My partner and I went for a drive and stumbled upon this pub when we took a wrong turn. Decided to stop for some food. The welcome was great, all staff were friendly and very helpful. The pub is very clean, but has a rustic feel and decor which was lovely. Food - just amazing and the 'Supper Club' deal on their menu gives a choice of 2 or 3 courses and the choices are great. My favourite was the new cajun chicken fillet burger. Very tender. Tastes sublime. Prices are what you would expect and the as ive said the food is great. Staff throughout were brilliant, coming back to check all was OK and if anything else was needed. A top Greene King performance. We will be returning and recommend this place highly!
