Green Man in Uttlesford

We were drawn to the Green Man after looking at the menu, the food sounded great and the prices much more reasonable than we often find nowadays. We were delighted to find out on booking that our dog was allowed to join us if sitting in the bar area…. And WOW. What a wonderful place. From the decor, to the warm welcome, the food & the lovely bar area which was just a nice as the resturant. We didn’t get our waiter’s name but he oozed warmth, was professional and very helpful when navigating which of the many meals we wanted to eat. We ended up having 3 main courses between 2, but 1 as a starter - he and the chef were so accommodating. Everything was spot on and we couldn’t have asked for a better evening. Thank you.

I made a reservation for 12 friends to meet for our annual Christmas get together. When I arrived the table was beautifully set. The meal and service was exceptional. We all had a great time and I’m sure you will see us all again. Thank you for a very enjoyable evening.

Out for a walk and decided to just pop in for a coffee by the log fire but as it was lunchtime decided to have a look at the menu. Hubby had sausage,cheese and onion sandwich with coleslaw and I had the fish cakes which were beautifully presented with a little side of mixed leaves - yummy! Nick made us very welcome even though we were in our scruffies and was very attentive the whole time and always with a smile!

The Green Man at Linsell is a lovely out of the way pub that nearly hits the mark. The pub decor is great and a very warm welcome from the attentive front of house team. It's kind of pub plus, with white table cloths and napkins, making Sunday lunch feel more like a proper destination. This is a good job as you have an adventure down single-track roads to get here by following our adventure inducing satnav. Never quite understood why that's an actual option on car satnavs. There was plenty of parking when we did arrive, so no stress with that. Drinks are standard pub fair, but the wine list looks reasonable. Foodwise, we both went for beef for the Sunday roast. Everything was cooked well, but missed something - seasoning. I would normally not change anything on my plate eating the way the chef planned, but here, it needed more punch to make the plate sing to the level of the quality of the ingredients. The one confusion was a broccoli cheese thing. Mushed broccoli in a cheese sauce - very odd. The waiter advised that everyone else loves it. I'll remain happily outside that circle. Desserts we had the crumble and brownie bake. The crumble was pinned as apple and blackberry or blackcurrant, not sure what it was meant to be, either way the black whatever was missing except the colour. So essentially, this was a purple apple crumble. This was served in a bowl with no space for the custard - go figure. Brownie was nice, if unadventurous. Having said all of the above, we did clear our plates and felt suitably full, ready for an afternoon walk - if the dog has anything to do with it. The bill came in at £30 a head, including drinks, so very reasonably priced for a Sunday Lunch. Overall - worth a visit for a relaxed lunch in a nice environment.

We met up here with our extended family, the quiet location was chosen being a 'midpoint' from our 5 homes. Our food was nicely presented and tasty, and the service provided by James and his team was excellent. There were lovely views from the rear of the inn, and a large beer garden. The inn was relatively quiet, perhaps because it was a Thursday lunch time in late September, but in my opinion deserves to be busier.

The pub is nice and clean and modern, with a pleasant outdoor area if you want to sit outside but it needed more sunshades for hot days. Service is warm & friendly. Whilst the beer battered fish was enjoyable, the skin-on chips were a soggy disappointment - more like badly done frozen chips. Would have expected them to be so much better. However, the salmon dish with mash was excellent. Wines are pricey.

Just popped in for quick anniversary drink as had other commitments but really warm welcome from James and the staff and lovely complimentary snack with our drinks which was a nice touch - James is such a lovely host and always takes the time to speak to you😊

First visit to this venue. Booked a table for myself and my wife for the Tapas evening. Good atmosphere, great food and attentive staff that looked to make our evening special. Although first visit it won't be our last.

Perfect country setting and lovely garden at rear, ideal for kids to let off steam too. Brilliant attentive staff and chef will come personally and speak to you if required. Food is top quality, white tablecloths and wine glasses on the tables, looks stunning ! For real ale drinkers try the Colchester Brewery ales, Jack Spitty is lovely !

Visited this resturant for a family dinner table of 9 . Upon arrival this looked like a very nice resturant ,however it gets worse !! We noticed a couple of wasps flying around on the back window and they headed straight for our table this continued throughout our meal we counted at least ten wasps heading towards us . management tried to deal with this problem by getting them outside but it didn't help ,they just kept coming back and trying to land in the food ,and being successful on a couple of occasions . A member of our group actually had to get up and deal with a wasp whilst trying to eat dinner . This was appalling and had no apology from management at all , no sorry ,no discount ,no free drinks , all they said is you are in the country what do you expect !! Well we are from London so expect one or two but not ten plus .it wasn't only wasps but flies as well they clearly saw one landed on my daughters food she didn't eat it of course, however they still tried to charge us for changing it . This place is a total rip off food is way below average and I can confirm this is the worst roast dinner I have ever had .. clearly the management need to go on a customer service course because they don't know how to treat customers .. AVOID unless you want to risk getting stung by wasps go toby carvery instead

We used to go to the Green Man a lot under the previous owners and thought we would give it a try again for our wedding anniversary with our children. Bit of a mistake! You can see they are trying to improve the quality of the food, which was always good anyway but poor training and terrible service really let it down tonight. So we sat at 17:30 and it was 15 mins before we were offered drinks, not a massive deal. Food order another 10 mins. Both the kids ordered burgers so I specifically asked if there was mayonnaise in the burgers and if the coleslaw was separate and was told no mayo in burger and coleslaw separate. Starter sharing mezze was OK except only 2 bits of halloumi (for 4 people) and odd tasting sandy brown coloured olives. So the burgers turn up and have coleslaw chucked on the plate right on the burgers and mayo in the buns. So they went back and “replacements” came back from the kitchen very quickly which were the same burgers just in new buns with no mayo and the coleslaw in ramekins. Then the wife’s fish and chips. Looked nice and waited for service to offer condiments - however seems we are being left alone now we said about the burgers. So she starts tucking in and finds a short dark black human hair on the plate. So that gets sent back. To be fair to the chef came out and apologised that he had not put his bandana on and unfortunately one of his hairs had fallen on the plate. OK forgive that once and say thank you for apologising. However it’s the same but if fish (as the wife had picked a bit off the end) and probably the same chips. Lovely. Then we totally get left alone. The kids were enjoying the burgers but slightly over salted and the water had run out so we thought get more water so they can finish and that someone would come near, which they did but to serve the tables around us and completely ignore us, even when trying to get attention. So in the end we get up (and could totally have walked out without paying and none of the staff would have been any the wiser) that’s not us though, so we paid. Told the chap at the bar that we had to come to the bar as we had been totally ignored (him being one of the many staff fawning over the people on the tables around us) and he just said OK handed the receipt. Now was the time for an apology, maybe even some sort of discount (which most places just do regardless) but no, nothing, no apology, no discount. Not bothered about the money So I paid in full and will be extremely unlikely to (read - will never) set foot in the place again as there was no attempt at apology. Happy wedding anniversary! When you book there is a question “is it a special occasion” which we put yes it was our wedding anniversary and no acknowledgment- so they obviously ignore those bits on the bookings. It felt like it was very clicky, like if you are known or are loaded you get looked after. Not a place for mere mortals.

Arrived for dinner and was shown to requested table by the window. Good comprehensive menu well selected and wine list also interestingly describing the varieties Two of us enjoyed the liver and bacon main course whilst the others selected the risotto . Both excellent as were the desserts that followed .Service from the young waiter courteous and helpful Good to see a influx of people as we were leaving again being well looked after and appreciated the atmosphere Thoroughly good evening well appreciated by all Thanks and looking forward to coming back

I visited the Green Man at Lindsell with two close family friends who had recently celebrated their Pearl Wedding anniversary. This is the first visit we had all made here. I booked the table online which took me through to “Open Table”. The process was easy and trouble-free with the confirmation arriving by e-Mail by return. The day before our booking, Open Table sent another e-Mail with a button to confirm that we would still be coming. Once this was done, a confirmation screen popped up giving the details of the booking as well as a dress code described as “business casual”. On arrival we were warmly greeted by the staff who were all well turned out and extremely friendly and polite. We were given the choice if we wanted to eat inside or outside which was a nice touch given the recent hot weather. We decided to eat inside, but we were close to the entrance to the garden which provided a nice backdrop. The table was a spacious circular one set for the three of us. After our drinks arrived we ordered from a varied but not overlong menu. We were told beforehand the items that were not available. I started with the pork belly which was beautifully cooked and very hot, and followed this with the chicken supreme. Portions are very generous, and the accompaniments to each dish are all described in the menu, so no extraneous and unexpected and unwanted extras like side salad or garnishes found their way onto the plate. Each one of us was highly impressed by the quality and quantity of the food. Clearly the food was prepared with great care, so it was not a rushed event and the intervals between courses were sensible. Similarly, desserts were fantastic, and any that were not available was indicated before we ordered. The staff were amazing: very friendly, polite, efficient, professional. They contributed enormously to our wonderful celebratory dinner, and the value for money is evident. The chef is to be highly commended! In conclusion, the bright cheery ambience of the restaurant, the excellent staff throughout, and the fabulous food made for a superb evening. This was our first visit to Green Man at Lindsell; we will definitely return.

Excellent food in a wonderful old property. The menu is not extensive but does cover most choices... only downside there are no Vegan options on the menu and only one vegetarian choice.

The Green Man is back and on great form! We have been several times since the new chef and team were brought in and every meal has been superb. Staff are friendly and the monthly Tapas Night was awesome. So glad to get back to one of our favourite restaurants' Can highly recommend to all you foodies

Visited on Friday night, was surprised they were not that busy. Welcomed with a smile and the service was excellent the whole evening , nothing too much trouble. Good selection of drinks and the food was very good. We all really enjoyed what we ordered, pork belly , chicken supreme went down well. I had the haunch if venison which was fabulous, well cooked and so tender. Desserts also very good and floater coffee. We will be returning and telling our friends

A Sunday roast cooked to perfection. The beef was excellent. The calamari was soft coated in a gorgeous light crisp batter exceptional quality. The Bakewell tart was light and the pastry full of flavour overall a very pleasurable meal served with a smile

I had spoken with the owner 3 times in one month about a table for 10 for my husbands birthday.Obviously due to COVID and government restrictions we had to wait for confirmation of opening.Once that was confirmed And speaking to the owner a week before I booked a marquee in the garden for two tables of five, was promised staff would decorate and we could take a birthday cake.On the day of the meal I phoned to confirm all was ok and was told by the owner that they was unable to put the marquee up and that the restaurant was full!No phone call previously, no apology, just told nothing they could do!!!I had eight people arriving at the venue that night, if I had not contacted the Green man we would of all been turned away and a birthday celebration would of been ruined!!Thankfully I was able to get a booking last minute at a local restaurant where staff were fantastic and helped make the evening special.

We turned up on Sunday 9/2 for a pre-booked lunch at The Green Man made via the bookatable.com app.As we approached the entrance door we were told that the power had been off all day and, as a result, the restaurant was closed. We were told that the Restaurant had been trying to contact customers all day to advise this. This was surprising as we had received no phone calls or emails (subsequently we have checked missed calls and junk emails and received none of these). All our contact details (email and telephone number) were provided via Bookatable. Nothing about the closure was posted on social media.Not only were we very disappointed about the cancellation but also unnerved by the bizarre behaviour of certain members of the Restaurant Staff in the car park. Not wishing to go into detail in this review but it was one of the most surreal moments of my life.I sent an email to the Green Man via the feedback section on their website. I didn’t get a response so I left a message for the Manager to call me. We eventually spoke a few days later and he asked me to resend my email. He responded saying he would investigate and reply in a couple of days. I didn’t hear from him so chased him again at the weekend by email. He said he would respond the following day. I didn’t hear anything further and at the time of this review no communication had been made.So, a really disappointing experience. I really don’t understand why a Restaurant would not take a complaint of this nature seriously. There might be an explanation. I felt that to be fair I wanted to give Managment the right to reply but for whatever reason this has not materialised.The Green Man is certainly not averse to telling customers how good they are. Their marketing boasts that they endeavour to deliver a first class service and their tag line is “tradition and passion”. It doesn’t matter what the reason for the complaint is a customer should feel that their comments are valued. How you handle a complaint is so important.If I had received a meaningful response then I probably not written a negative review.

As we live in Dunmow thought we would give this place a try. Just got home, so much earlier than we would of on a usual night out. The noise level was the worst we have ever experienced in a restaurant. So much worse than a school dinner hall (worked in schools for over 20 years) The food is basic...burgers, fish & chips, sausage & mash, very limited veggie options. We went with another couple to celebrate 2 birthdays and we were all very disappointed. The staff were friendly and attentive and food was fine but we will not go again due to the noise level. We couldn’t hear each other and I felt that I was shouting which made me feel ill, I had to lip read my friend to try and understand what she was saying. It was also very warm in there.

This is the place where my family all meet up from various parts of the South of England for dinner and a get together on special occasions. On this, our latest party for my 70th Birthday The Green Man really excelled. Despite my youngest son and his partner and my brother and his wife being held hostage by the roadworks on the A14 for over two hours the staff bent over backwards to ensure my party was a success. The food was lovely (as usual) and I don't remember much being left on the plates. The children were well fed, happy and well behaved as always and the staff were so nice to all the children. Thanks once again. You will see us again I promise.

Table booked for 1pm - the pub was packed ! yet promptly seated and served by very attentive staff all of our food was delicious and the wines reasonably priced - go to destination for service and quality food

We decided to treat ourselves and have Sunday lunch at the Green Man. As always it was lovely! Great food, great atmosphere and the wine was delicious. Highly recommended.

Have visited this restaurant before and have had one reasonable meal and one poor one. On Christmas Day we paid £95 a head plus service charge so were expecting a top class meal. Starter and Dessert were of an acceptable quality. The main course of Turkey turned out to be pre-formed stuffed Turkey roll which did not look very appetising and am told did not taste that great. Mr. Toby carveries can supply real turkey cut fresh 365 days of the year, why not a place of this supposed quality ? Looked like a cheap option. The venison served to one of the party was undercooked and had little taste. The roast potatoes were generally found to be too hard. Staff were pleasant , efficient and worked well under pressure.

Visited twice in December, once with friends the other with family from the US. Both occasions excellent service as usual from the Green Man team. Sorely disappointed that we was not having Christmas Day lunch there but will be booking early so we don't miss out in 2020. Thank you and see you all next year.

Had a family lunch at the Green Man today; the staff could not have been more accommodating and helpful; going out of their way to meet our requests, including making changes to set dishes to meet dietary preferences e.g. vegetarian options. The food was lovely, with generous portions. Service was friendly and efficient and the whole place had a lovely friendly ambience. Highly recommended.

We attended the green man after hearing numerous rave reviews and reading so many positive reviews online. Unfortunately our experience left much to be desired. I am aware that my review may be lost amongst the flood of positive ones but I feel that my experience last night need to be shared.

Hi I went in there today 6-10-19 and I had a beef burger and chips my burger was sadly raw inside and had to send it back , the coffee was strong and when I got home I was sick and very poorly

We had the best Sunday lunch for a family/friends lunch! Brilliant service & amazing food! We didn’t have to ask for drinks etc they were there all the time asking if we wanted anything more! We couldn’t ask for anything more! The service and experience was brilliant!

Food here was excellent. Roast beef was tasty, served medium rare (ie pinkish), roast lamb also good, excellent Yorkshire puddings, nice array of fresh vegetables, etc. Desserts also good. We arrived late (missed a turning) for our booking; they were very nice about it. The bar-height table , with high chairs, we were were allocated was much more comfortable than it looked. Service was friendly and smiley. Downside, though, is that it was a little haphazard. A glass of wine took a very long time to arrive. The roast lamb was on the menu as coming with mint sauce and redcurrant jelly. Both had to be asked for when the meal arrived, and then there was no redcurrant jelly. Cranberry sauce was proffered instead. So, a few shortcomings, but we had a good time overall. One important thing:

I worked a the Green Man forty years ago, and it was a lovely country pub, with a reputation for good food. Sadly, after I left, the pub burnt down and has since been rebuilt. Gone is the cosy, warm bar , with grand piano and it is now more of a “ Designer “ pub. Wasn’t impressed at all and we just stayed for a couple of highly priced drinks. My friend is disabled and couldn’t sit on a bar stool and there was a total lack of comfortable seating for her. She was begrudgingly given a chair at our feet. The bar was cold and impersonal and I would say only suitable for the nouveau rich. I looked at a taster menu, which was nothing special at £75 a head. Not a good place to relive my happy memories and won’t be returning....not that they would want riffraff like us !!!

Lovely restaurant and very full. The menu doesn’t appear to have changed for a couple of years and still no vegetarian Sunday roast option! The waiter was lovely and we were served quickly. The doors and windows were open as it was a warm day but that led to an abundance of wasps and flys which wasn’t very pleasant when you are trying to eat, maybe invest in some fly and wasp traps. Expensive for what it is but the food was lovely.

We visited here for the first time on Saturday for my Birthday. We were pleasantly surprised by the modern look of the restaurant. Somehow it still managed to give the impression of a country pub at the same time .

Came last night and was very impressed with the restaurant, and the food, and the very lovely young lady who serviced us intermittently (sock in hair lady). However, the slightly older lady who first met us and served us throughout was sadly quite miserable, and unenthusiastic. It felt a complete effort on her behalf and it did taint our experience, sadly!

We Could not fault our experience at this venue for our parents 51st wedding anniversary. The food was absolutely delicious & well presented. The staff were so smiley & nothing seemed to much trouble for them. A wonderful atmosphere, staff were extremely busy but no flustering- just a flow of pleasant people working hard to deliver a fantastic service. Well done 5*

Excellent meal service,fortunately good size car park with the amount of patrons,which is needed,very popular,inside very well laid out,plus good seating outside,will definitely come again.

I dont know how so many people give this disgusting restaurant a good review, either you all eat at some Terrible restaurants or theres an epidemic of bad taste hitting the region, seriously guys and girls you get better food from the local kebab van.

After coming here several times and wanting to give the owners the benefit of the doubt as a local we decided to come back, what a mistake, over priced, none existent quality, rude staff and drugs being taken throughout the premises.

We were in the area as my husband had some business with a good local business. While in discussion he asked for a recommendation for lunch and they recommended the Green Man as being somewhere they often took clients. Thie is a very upmarket area and had high expectations. A rather plain exterior gave way to t very attractive interior indeed. Lovely set out tables with white cloths and shining cutlery, a lovely garden and outside seating area. We were warmly welcomed and seated. A dying gesture we were brought lovely bread and butter, The menu is a little strange but I though the Fish and Chips would be a safe option and my anticipation of something good to come was turned to great disapointmnet. It was so vastly overcooked. The chips were 50% inedible and the fish instead of being golden bordered on black.I have had far better in a budget pub chain. Certainly not worth the very high price charged. My husband chicken burgen looked more manageable but again not worth that price for a burger. A medium glass of wine as the price of a bottle anywhere. Such lovely surroundings should not outclass the quality of the food. Altogether very disappointing.

Visited the green man as part of a leaving doo for work about 15 of us.

Lunch with some 30 friends. The food was all pre-ordered, and was as excellent as ever. However wine-by-the-glass is inordinately expensive, and the service was incredibly slow - some two hours to serve just two pre-ordered courses.

We went for lunch - we have been a few times and each time it’s gone downhill- we kept trying but we won’t be doing it anymore. Our table was not ready, we had to ask for menus, no bread served although given to other tables, no water offered, zero service from the staff, food was average at best. Overheard a couple of tables asking for menus. We also overheard the manager being extremely rude to staff. We asked for a dessert menu- didn’t turn up so we paid and left. It was very noisy with lots of kids running around (I like kids but it’s not very romantic). The staff were totally ignoring customers- we won’t be back - don’t waste your time or money.

We have been to the Green Man several times and we always have a good time. Last night was no different. From start to finish the staff looked after us so well and the food was perfect - best pub/restaurant around for miles!

I visited this pub several times in the last few years and it’s never let me down. Last time I went midweek we were ten people (6 kids). The pub wasn’t too busy and the food came out all at the same time and very well presented. Oh yeah and it was delicious!!! Best burger by far I had in a long time in a pub. Everyone in the party agreed how good the food tasted.

3 men on 3 motorbikes on an explore. We came across the Green Man by chance as it was in the right place at lunchtime. Large car park and a welcoming sign, led us into what was a lovely pub with well above average pub food. We sat outside in the very large garden to the rear. Service was very good and the food was above average pub fayre.

Excellent food,location,plenty of parking,useful side bar as you enter for an early refreshment,service good,will come again.

Set in a lively location in the countryside a couple of miles from Great Dunmow. Unprepossessing from the outside it is spacious and elegant inside. The greeting was pleasant and immediate and we were offered a choice of tables. There was a good choice on both the menu and the wine list although the wine prices seemed high. The food was very well presented and tasty and service was excellent throughout. A definite find. Really good fine dining.
