What a great pub this is. The landlord is second to none a charming lovely man. You won't get a better public house with more charm it's so rustic. 3 blazing fires it takes you back in time we loved it.

One of the most spectacular pubs you'll visit.... Ran by one of the most bizarre families you will ever meet! Visited on a few occasions and not made to feel welcome. Visited again recently and qued for a long time whilst an elderly lady served. Asked for a pint and two cokes. Asked what Crisps she has and she looked at me as if I was stupid and pointed to a wall! Recently read online that the pub had closed and the community had bought the pub and was now operating it... Tried to make small talk and asked her about this... She bit my head off... "You need to check your information.... The internet is obviously wrong. Etc etc" Asked to pay on my card and she declared that she was 80 year old and can't see the machine... Offered to help but she shouted "why do people these days think it's acceptable to pay on cards!!! I can't see the machine I'm 80 year old" sighing and banging around... Clearly I a foul mood..... Ermm OK, sorry but before I headed off on my long walk over from Hawes I forgot to consult my crystal ball in case the barmaid was elderly and didn't like using the card machine ..... Or should I walk all the way back to Hawes use the cashpoint then walk back and pay for it... Hopefully this gem of a pub will one day get the landlord it truly deserves

I adore this unspoilt pub and been comming once a year for years . We mix with the locals next to the fire and are always made welcome. The landlord is always pleasant and makes you welcome please don't change a thing. Some reviews are not happy as no food available. This is an old pub not a restuarante and I hope it stays that way so many good times here and hope there are plenty more to come

We arrived at The Green Dragon having done our homework for Hardraw Force waterfall. We arrived in the pub.We asked very politely if they were doing food.WELL you would have thought we had asked for the Crown Jewels. The older lady behind the bar barked back at me “ we are a drinking pub,no food “.The pub owns the falls, behind the pub on their land we found YES a cafe doing food.No mention of this from the lady in the pub.Pub was very original ( Drovers Arms in new series of All creatures great and small ) but needed sorting out as it was chaotic.Be Advised.

Visited The Green Dragon today as we wanted to visit whilst in the area due to it being featured in the TV drama 'All Creatutes Great And Small". On the previous day I messaged the pub via their Facebook page to double check if they would be open on a Monday lunchtime as I'm aware some hospitality venues close after a busy weekend. We recieved a message saying "We usually are if the weather is good. From 12ish. We only serve drinks though. Mark" As the weather was good we visited the area and then made our way to the pub. After visiting the waterfall which was next door we went around to the pub to find it totally closed up and in darkness. (This was at 12.45 so comfortably past the 12ish time mentioned in the message) Two other couples were also looking to visit. One couple from America who were also fans of the TV show and were wanting to specifically visit. This was such a shame

What a gem of a discovery, was made to feel so welcome we went back twice before our trip ended. Fabulous landlord who lent me a book on local history. Great historical bar area possibly dating back to 13teenth century. Bags of character plus a certain puddle out behind the pub. Well worth a visit in fact it's a must before the Gentleman landlord retires, top pint of peculiar too. Thank you Mark, for us it was the highlight of our tour of north Yorkshire. Wanna go halves on a bid for Pendragon castle?😁

Called in for a couple of drinks after the steady walk over from Hawes, hasn't changed much in all the long time I've been visiting. Landlord was a very relaxed and amiable chap who was very polite and friendly. Cards, Phones and watch pay methods don't always work so it's best to have some good old fashioned hard cash on you. Will be returning shortly.

Fantastic little pub with some amazing history! Had my first ale here, which was great! Loved the atmosphere and the staff was very friendly and helpful! This is also a must do location for fans of the new "All Creatures Great and Small" series, you'll recognize The Drovers Arms as soon as you walk in. Apparently the business is still recovering from the Covid mess, and hasn't brought food back to the menu yet, but I can't wait to come back and try it in the future!

I am no stranger to the dales, myself and my family would visit when I was a kid sometimes twice a year, the green dragon inn in Hardraw is very familiar to me and I have seen many a iteration over the years. It’s been about 15yrs since I was last there and learned it had only been open for a little while before my visit. I was camping next door across the river in Hardraw at the campsite which was excellent and perfectly located for the pennine way and treks up on to the moors. I had some work to do and needed a place to use my laptop for a whole day, on my arrival I spent the evening at the Inn and asked Ian the barman and then the landlord Owen who were both massively helpful, he then introduced me to the owner Mark who again was another layer of helpfulness(also a talented draughtsman) and suggested that I can even use a seperate room to focus upstairs the following day. It transpired that I ended up spending the whole day in the bar(sober) with my laptop because the wifi wouldn’t extend through the 13th century walls(no bad thing). I got a real insight in to the comings and goings of locals and tourists alike which ended up being a big day for Owen and his partner who maintained such spirits throughout as well as plying me with the most amazing local cheeses and good coffee. I can’t thank them enough for accomodating me that day and in a place that holds such amazing memories too. I’d highly recommend a visit if you enjoy quintessential period architecture and not one but a couple of real fires on the go most of the year round. Wishing the team there the very best in their ventures and a continued footfall to keep this amazing place alive and well not just for you the visitor but for the locals too.

Checked into the Swaledale room @ 5.30pm. Good size room & clean with lovely view, however, very cold as the heating was off in the room. It was so cold we couldn’t take our coats off. We were told the heating had just been turned on & it would be toasty in no time. Went for a walk with the dog to return to the room & it was still freezing cold. We informed a chap behind the bar called Matthew who said he’d take a look. 5 mins later he returned saying there was a fault with the system but it was fine now. Apparently this was the first time it had happened. Convinced all was ok, we stayed in the pub for drinks & food(ok but over priced). We retired to our room about 11.30pm, it was obvious as soon as we opened the door the heating was still not working & the room was still extremely cold. Had a closer look at the thermostat on the radiator, it was on max, but no heat going through the pipes. Another trip to the bar to complain. Spoke to the very miserable landlady. She insisted she wanted to see for herself so came to our room. We mentioned that we’d turned the thermostat to max earlier, but still no heat. Landlady went to inform Matthew. 5 mins later he came to our room, walked up to the radiator & by some miracle, it was getting warm. We were accused of ‘playing’ with the radiator, which was obviously the reason it hadn’t come on, so it was our fault as they’d never had a problem before. The following morning - we had booked breakfast for 10am. Full English. The usual including deep fried bread, very dark in colour. Bacon was so well done it was difficult to cut without a chisel. Fresh coffee was served but was cold. Toaster machine took 10 minutes to toast bread. We pre-ordered our breakfast for Sunday. One full English & my other half requested 1 fried egg, 2 sausages & 2 hash browns. At breakfast we were approached by Matthew asking if it was 2 full English breakfasts. I asked if I could have scrambled egg instead of fried. He said that was fine & my other half explained about his pre-order request the night before. 2 minutes later breakfast arrived. Mine included a fried egg & no bacon. My husbands came 1 sausage less than he’d requested despite requesting 2 the night before. We were so looking forward to staying here with friends. The pub is a wonderful place with so much character. With the exception of John behind the bar & the young girl that showed us our room when we arrived, the rest of the staff have no idea about customer service & should not be working in hospitality. I was looking forward to saying how wonderful this place was, but sadly I am unable to do this.

Visited this pub as part of our family holiday to the Dales. It was raining heavily and we had just seen the magnificent Hadraw Force waterfall in its stunning glory. We decided to have our only lunch out in the Green Dragon. Having popped in briefly before we did our walk we spoke to a lovely couple behind the bar who shared stories of films and tv programmes filmed locally. On our return I probably experienced one of the rudest bar woman I have ever encountered. She certainly got out of the wrong side of bed. Arrogant and obnoxious as I ordered our food. Huffing and puffing. I apparently said what I wanted incoherently even though I literally read what it said on the menu. Having waited 45 minutes for our food it was slammed down in front of us and was cold. Usually I'd complain but feared the woman was in fact the green dragon.... There are lots of other lovely eateries in this stunning part of the country. Take your custom there. Food was way too expensive for what it was too. £9 for a childs meal.

The Green Dragon now accommodates varied travellers and caters for their needs. Before it was an old gtraditional pub with a mad landlord. Its main claim to fame was the waterfall to the rear of the property that famously was the setting for Kevin Costner's impromptu shower scene in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. There is camping at the back of the pub a bunkhouse and a variety of rooms to choose from. The food is good and plentiful and there are roaring open fires. Close to Hawes the central focal poit for that area of Wensleydale, there are numerous attractions to occupy the discerning tourist for several hours.

Words just fail me with what we have just experienced at the Green Dragon Inn in Hardraw. We are on holiday and decided to spend our last evening together in the Green Dragon to finish off a fantastic holiday in this superb area. When we arrived at 20.10pm, there was only one other customer in the pub. There was no welcome or hello from the person behind the bar which should have been an indication of the service we were about to receive but we bought our round of drinks and sat down in the only lit area which had a dying fire, so much so that it was struggling to give out any heat.As we couldn't ask for any assistance to put another log on the fire, we proceeded to do it ourselves to try and get warm.On the lady's return, we were duly reprimanded for what we did, and that the lady would now have to put water on the fire to extinguish any flames should they occur. If this wasn't enough to be confronted with, at 20.40pm we were then told that as the pub was quiet, it would be shutting at 21.00pm. Never mind that we had intended to stay until 22.30pm and would have spent another £35.00 at least - we were not given any thought what so ever. Our last night together - ruined. Is this any way to treat paying customers - I don't think so. It costs nothing to be polite and courteous. And to be so abrupt in the manner we were spoken to was beyond belief. We could have walked out at that stage, we chose not to - but wish we had. There is no way we will ever be put in that position again - it was an absolute disgrace.

an historical old building dating back to the 1200's. The beer is well delivered and the food is decent. Great place to visit.

Called this Pub to ask about eating there. was told just to turn up. Went in to a dingy looking bar. The bar had 5 locals taking up all the space with one blocking the route into another room. He made no attempt to move as I and my teenage grand-daughter tried to enter the other room. The other room looked grubby too and there was no indication as to food service, I decided this was not the sort of place I wanted to eat and had to push my way past the ignorant fool blocking the entrance. As we left he made an inappropriate remark . The landlord/barman never said a word of welcome or anything else for that matter. A wretched experience and I would say to others dont bother going there if the food is like the welcome, it will make you sick I a sure. The Landlord/barman should be ashamed of the his performance and that of the people he had in his bar last night. (But somehow I doubt that he will)

The location is simply fabulous. At the top of Swaledale with views all around. Set up for walkers - so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Mixing with fellow walkers meant a very sociable stay. Room was good size and comfortable. Restaurant bar and lounge were of high quality and brought a high enjoyable stay. Matt and Dave are great hosts. Thoroughly recommended.

No beer on draught, no food available. The only drink on tap was from yorkshire water. Don't know how the landlord makes a living, rumour is he has funds hidden in a barrel of Wensleydale Gold.

We visited 20th October 2024 for a meal for our sons birthday. We always go for special occassions however the meals were not as good as normal . Myself and daughter In law chose the bottomless Chinese my Husband and son chose trio parmos and my other son chose the Barney rubble mixed grill . Our table was booked for 6.30 we sat for 20 minutes and I had to ask Bar staff if we were to place our order at the bar to which she said I will come to your table . Long story short we waited and waited when the food finally arrived the trio parmos were extreamly dry and very hard unedible really . Very dissapointing experence .
