Grange Bakery in South Lakeland

Absolutely disgusting, my partner went to get a pie and salad bun today at 12.30 this is a Saturday! Only to be greeted with “very sorry we are closing look there’s no bread or buns left! Highly unlikely as 12.30 is peak business. Because it is such a sunny day they were packing the goods away so no one could see or buy them!!! Well Grange Bakery has slipped back into old habits. The other day it was the weekend and the Staff had cleaned everything off the shelves and had packed up!! I demanded they made me a salad and ham bun. The girl serving looked at me with distain all the buns cakes were under the counters and in drawers.Cakes were being sold at a £1 each, I got 2 to try( me and my partner ) AWFUL!!! Chocolate orange cake was dry must have been a week old and scones were like rocks! WHY IS NOTHING COVERED NOT JUST TO KEEP MOIST BUT TO STOP CONTAMINATION!! If the shop for filled its opening hours the cakes would have been sold and no negative reviews would be necessary. The staff could hardly speak English which was a problem,that comment isn’t racist it’s a fact! I don’t understand why that Bakery isn’t open till at least 4.30pm on a weekend as people (tourists) were looking through the windows thinking that they were closed. This is how businesses end up failing - loss of custom and revenue. To WHOEVER is in charge of this Bakery( I know there is 3) make them stay open to proper closing time because I can guarantee they don’t put on their time sheet or report that they were finished early! They were standing there cringing hoping no one would come through the door. It’s perfectly fine giving foreigners jobs but ffs make them do their job properly! No Bakery in a place like Grange closes at 12.30!!

Re. previous comment on pricing: a. You should display the price as not everyone wants to ask the price of things (it makes some people feel embarrassed) b. The law states (taken from the Gov.uk website): Rules for retailers If you’re a retailer, you must display: the price of products - this must be in sterling (pounds and pence) and include VAT where applicable the price of a single item (the ‘unit price’) for products that you sell loose metric measures (like kilograms, centimetres or litres) for unit pricing -

Why the 3 stars? As someone who lives just outside Grange, I have bought various times a number of times over the years, when I pop into the town. But on my last visit I was disappointed to see the pricing is not clear. To my mind, the cakes should be clearly labelled with their prices, alongside the name of the item. There was some sort of pricelist on the counter, but it was difficult to discern exactly what the prices related to. This is a time when people have to budget carefully everyone in Grange is a wealthy pensioner.

Lovely people, beautiful food and a lovely visit

We walked into this little bakery to see a lovely selection of cakes and bakes. We ordered a vanilla slice from a lovely lady with dark hair. We were standing at the bar area opposite the counter to eat it as it was raining outside, the lovely lady who served us even offered to cut it in half for us. We began to tuck in and it was truly delicious. My enjoyment was ruined when I looked over the counter and the other staff member with a short bob hair cut was scowling at us, she then very loudly 'wispered' to her colleague that this is "a take out place not an eating in place", despite having the bar counter to stand at and tables and chairs outside, which we would have sat at had it not been raining. Needless to say we left instantly. Had she informed us directly that it was not an eating in place, we would have happily left, however this rude woman ruined our otherwise pleasant experience.

We’d read on Trip Advisor that the croissants were stale but just assumed it was a one off or untrue. I mean, how could a bakery find it acceptable in any way to not sell freshly baked products? Well, it seems it wasn’t a one off. 2 almond croissants purchased from their counter on a Tuesday morning and they were like cardboard. The added star was for the friendly server, otherwise it would’ve been a one star review.

We thought we'd get a fresh loaf and some croissant for breakfast. Croissant was stale and possibly cooked from frozen. At £1.25 a croissant I wish I'd gone across the road to Tesco. The multiseed bloomer and £4.25 was also stale, it did not have a nice crunchy crust.

I really like Grange bakery but feel I have to let you know about my recent disappointing experience. On Friday I purchased a birthday cake which I had ordered several weeks ago. I went in to check the day before that everything was in order, the very helpful assistant read my order back to me. A lemon cake, to feed 10 people, fully fondant, iced in lemon and white, £48. My first disappointment was on collecting the cake, it had large pink flowers as well as lemon and white decoration. Not to be deterred, I looked on the bright side and delivered the cake to the special family party which was taking place in the NE. The cake was cut into, my daughter requested lemon cake, her favourite but to my absolute horror, it wasnt lemon, it was a vanilla sponge with jam and buttercream. I was so upset. I have to say there was no way of knowing what cake was inside the icing but I ordered lemon so that is what I thought I would have got! ....I would not have even ordered the cake if I thought my request could not have been fulfilled, I would have gone elsewhere. What was the point of the very helpful lady filling in the form and asking me all the questions ?? when who ever baked the cake never read it and just delivered what they thought I would want. 07/07/24 I now need to add that following my review I have received a satisfactory resolution. 3.7.23 @ 10:30. Purchased sourdough loaf costing £4.25. The bread was for our lunch and we discovered it was STALE.. Very disappointing - I assume they wouldn’t sell this to locals (who would complain) only to tourists who never go back to the bakery.

Gorgeous selection of locally sourced products. Bought a bottle of locally made whisky liqueur and I'd consider travelling all the way back up from London just to buy another few bottles.

The best pork pie I have ever tasted!! It was packed with flavour and the pastry was cooked to perfection! I can't wait to go back and try some more of their pies! Highly recommended. Definitely worth a visit.

Brilliant bakery, we always go there for their fabulous Steak & Kidney pies, beautiful thin pastry and always full to the brim with tender Steak & Kidney with delicious thick tasty gravy. Mouth wateringly beautiful. They have a lovely selection of cakes, breads and i believe they do take away sandwiches too. Would highly recommend. Staff are very friendly and welcoming, only 2 people allowed in the shop at once as it is a small shop.

We were staying in the area for a week and in need of some real bread to have along with pate for dinner and make toast the following morning for breakfast. We arrived mid afternoon and while there wasn't much left to choose from we did get a really good wholemeal loaf of bread.

The steak and ale pie was one of the best pies I've ever had. The bakery is absolutely spot on, pies, beef and gravy barm, slices of freshly made cake. Could of ate everything in that place and you can't go wrong with the price at all.

Amazing choice of bread & cakes served by a lovely & helpful guy. We also had soup & a super pasty which we ate at an outside table, great after an arduous bike ride.

Just went into the shop with my visiting family at 4.55. Can l buy some cakes ? I asked We are about close came the very abrupt reply. Yes but can l buy some cakes, l asked again. At this both ladies turned their back on us and just ignored us all. I had told my family about how friendly Grange Bakery was and how good the cakes and bread was. This is a regular customer who will not be returning !!

Popped in for food, after finding this place by chance, and it was lovely. Staff were great and the ham (made in house) was delicious. If we're ever in GOS again we'll be back

A lovely small family run bakery and Cafe. Delicious home made food and mouth watering menu. Plus, the cakes are gorgeous too. Must mention the most lovely helpful friendly waitress - didn't get her name but she's served us each time we've been and she made us and our dog so very welcome. A lively find, but don't tell everyone or we might not get a seat!!

Found this little bakery on our holiday to the Lake District. The staff were so lovely and the food was to die for, especially the steak and ale pie. Kids loved their rolls and cookies. It was so good we went a further twice before leaving. Will definitely be back.

I popped in for a nice bread roll but the cakes looked amazing so I treated myself to one of those too. Would highly recommend the flourless chocolate cake. The lady behind the counter was lovely

A great little bakery, always stocked with a variety of freshly made cakes, bread, rolls etc. There is also a small salad bar and cooked meets are also available for anyone planning a picnic. The staff are friendly and helpful.

We have bought from Grange bakery for many years and love their products. Always fresh and good quality products.

We were really impressed by the friendly service and wide range of products. The sandwiches we had made to order were very tasty and the loaf of bread something a little different - I wish this bakery was closer to home!

Nothing more to say other that it was overpriced. Nothing wrong with the food but I just think they are taking the Micky.

Grange is really lucky to have this bakery. As well as wonderful cakes, breads etc they make fresh sandwiches to order. Do not leave it too late in the day to visit as stock does run low.

Go hear for our bread which is excellent does the usual cakes with extras, along with snacks tea and coffee. Excellent quality and value.

They sell a range of Bakery products including hot savouries plus a selection of Coffees. We also chose to have food and drinks sitting outside the premises on tables provided. The savouries and rolls are tasty and high quality and the Coffee selection is international. Service was good but could do with more staff since there was only one serving on our late morning visit but this should not detract from the overall enjoyment. Very pleasant visit.

Well done Grange Bakery! They were very helpful when I called up from Guernsey to request a birthday cake for friends birthdays we were celebrating in the Lake District. The cake was very tasty and they delivered it in good time to the Masons Arms where we were staying! Thank you to all concerned

We recently purchased quite a few things from here for a day out picnic, the quality of food and the service we received from the staff was exceptional, nothing was to much trouble. great shop

If you want good fresh bread, cakes and pies, this is definitely worth a try. The fruit pies are great value, the range of bread is wide and interesting. Everything we have had from here has been good, most things have been very good.

One of the truly GREAT bakeries of Britain. An amazing selection of baked goods both sweet and savoury. GREAT selection of vegetarian munchies as well. If you like cakes and pies this bakery will fulfil and exceed your expectations.

Nice independent bakery with a very good selection of freshly baked bread. Very good cake choice and the 70pence I paid for a apple pie was money well spent.

Gorgeous breakfast and coffee is great. We decided to skip breakfast in the hotel to try this place as they bake there own bread and cakes. Had a scramble egg on crusty bap with sautéed mushroom. It was to die for. Service was efficient and it was value for money.

Excellent range of breads and buns of all sorts. Their cakes are all freshly made and delicious. Take away soup and sandwiches. They have a couple of tables outside for Summertime, very well regarded in Grange .

We arrived in Grange just before 4.30pm to find all cafes closed or closing. .. we were in dire need of sustainance... walked along Kents Bank Road and found the bakery... open until 5pm so enquired if they could cater for three weary travellers... answer was not a problem so we ordered coffees and cakes... both were excellent... even took away cues for supper... to be honest I think that the bakery will get my business... not impressed being turned away from cafes who just want to close up... would rather give business to somewhere that looks after its punters.
