Thank you so much for making our meal for our 40th wedding anniversary with our friends so memorable. The standard of food was superb and presentation exceptional, this was down to the dedication of the team in the kitchen and their mentors . The service we received from the young man (clover) was outstanding and he should be rightly proud as the rest of the serving team and mentors should be. £21 yes £21 for a three course restaurant meal and expirience. When we are next up this way on holiday we shall most definately be booking a lunch and will recommend to our family and friends. Finally a big thankyou for the marvellous cake which you presented to us. It was delicious and again a reflection of the superb team you have at the college including the your booking collegue. So once again thank you ALL Dave and Lin

We dined here on Wednesday and had the 3 course lunch which was Vegetable Soup or Salmon Terrine which were both delicious. followed by 2 roast carvery (Beef & Turkey) with Yorkshire pudds, Cranberry, Bread and Horseradish sauce. Vegetables were Red cabbage, Brussels, carrots, parsnips, roast potatoes (which were to die for) and mash and gravy. Puddings were Xmas pudding with rum sauce or White Chocolate Baileys Cheesecake. All made by the students of the college and front of house manned by them too. I can honestly say they done themselves proud. Price was reasonable and we would certainly go again. Just unfortunate there wasn't more in as only 7 diners on that day. Well done all the boys and girls.

The prices are relatively low and the portions are almost nouvelle cuisine size. However the atmosphere is all about training students in the college's cookery school. The service is therefore sometimes a bit hit and miss - eaten there three times so far and have been disappointed every time that the house wines, when I ask what they are find them grasping for the wine list to read what I could read. The menu is always limited but the food has always been excellent.

I booked as a birthday treat for my cousin. The restaurant was set out beautifully, the staff were attentive, prices unbelievably low. It was early November and when I booked they didn't mention it was Christmas Dinners only. The Carvery looked fantastic, My cousin had hot salmon starter which she pronouced fantastic. I had the veggie option. I was disappointed, root vegetable soup, followed by root vegetable crumble accompanied by vegetables was not really what I was expecting, no protein but at least 10 portions of veg that day. Cousin had the Christmas dinner and enjoyed it. We both had a lovely pudding. I'd heard such good reports and will go back but to say the veggie option was uninspired is being kind.

This is the 3rd time we have dined at Graduates, we are both fussy eaters. The food is delicious and this time students went the "extra mile" in our opinion. The menu which is fabulous was proving a little tricky to order from as there was no soup starter the evening we attended, chef's were notified and rather than one of us go without or order a starter that may not be enjoyed, they provided a gorgeous pea soup with fantastic home made bread. The mousse dessert was heavenly. Service from front of house was outstanding, will definitely be going again and before these amazing budding chefs break for summer.

If you ever happen to be in west Cumbria, you must visit the Graduates restaurant at the Lakes College, Lillyhall (between Whitehaven and Workington) – it is an absolute gem. Run by the college and staffed entirely by students, the restaurant is light, airy and spacious. The tables, all beautifully set, are sufficiently spaced out so that you don't have to listen to the conversations of other diners and the décor is simple but very tasteful. The menu is not extensive but nevertheless there is something for everyone, and the prices are extremely reasonable – between £2 and £5 for a starter, £4 to £7 for a main course and £3 to £5 for desserts. Tea and coffee is just £1.The food itself was delicious – everything is freshly made and cooked and the portions, which are beautifully served, are just the right size. And the staff are extremely professional and attentive without being intrusive. All in all, the whole experience was a delight and I will certainly be making a return visit very soon.

Such a lovely warm welcome from Ian, the server. He was so attentive throughout our time there. It is a limited menu but everything we had and we went twice in three days in Keswick, tasted great. There was three types of soup to choose from which came with different accompaniments, ie, sourdough toast, spicy chickpea bun ect. There was also a choice of about five different types of cake and I can highly recommend the ginger and raspberry with extra fruit compote. Note it's cash only and closed Sunday and Monday. Precis: Wow! Excellent! Any other superlative you choose! Full review: What a wonderful gem of a find! From the start the welcome was warm and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble for Gary, Donna and their team; what a diamond they have found in Jack! The quality of the furnishings is very high, the fittings top class and the home made biscuits in the bedroom were delicious! Even a welcome decanter of sherry to start off your stay! The hallway walls are adorned with award plaques from numerous organisations! The grounds were extensive and very well kept. We had read about the wild red squirrels and hoped we may get to spot one - no fears there; we watched them running around the garden and feeder each day! Now for the food! Absolutely excellent! Each evening started at 7pm with canapés and good conversation with fellow guests, most of whom seem to be repeat visitors, with good reason! Gary is very personable and quite the bon viveur, his knowledge of wine is excellent, after all by his own admission he has been in the game for a good number of years! The four course dinner menu is set, no choices, but the menu is on display each morning and I'm sure that alternatives could be organised if enough notice were given. Each course was exquisite, served piping hot (where appropriate!) and presented beautifully, as was the table in general. Service was efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. Breakfast was just as good! Hazel Bank has seven rooms and the restaurant is open only to residents. All this means that each guest gets very personal, and personable, service from start to finish! If you think that this review is a little enthusiastic then I doubt you've visited! Don't get me wrong, it isn't for everybody and nowhere is totally perfect, but Hazel Bank gets VERY close!
