Golden Mayfair in Southend-on-Sea

Absolutely delighted by my recent visit! The food was exceptionally delicious and truly authentic Malaysian cuisine at its best. I particularly recommend trying the Singapore Curry Laksa Noodles!

I’m a Malaysian and I will say that this place is amazing. We stumbled upon it while we were hungry after the journey to the beaches. Most of the restaurants are closed and we got sick of chips all day, missed home, found a Malaysian restaurant really close by! The owner was very pleasant and she cooks like no other here, brought the flavours straight from Penang authentically! I recommend anyone who comes here to try the Nasi Lemak and Fried Rice, it’s really delicious. Things to note, remember to make reservations ahead of time!

I got wonderful experience there. Service is awesome. Food is mind-blowing and so tasty. I felt real taste of Malaysia street food as i always enjoyed in Malaysia.

I’m afraid I didn’t see what other reviewers have experienced our visit to this restaurant was a disaster and we wouldn’t go back again. Firstly the restaurant was empty apart from two tables. The immediate impression is of stark unlit tables bright lights and no ambiance whatsoever. The tables were not all made up which looked sloppy. Each table had QR information which was unnecessary and also not very clean. The place needs some attention to how it looks it’s a big area and this could be improved a great deal. We ordered some starters which were basically frozen delights that were tasteless and not worth the money. I ordered us 3 dishes for the mains unfortunately one of these arrived on its own and was semi cold before the second dish arrived and even further for the third. These should have been sent out together there was clearly a problem in the kitchen despite it being a quiet period. The mains were poor. The beef rendang was dry the meat had clearly been cooked but this should have been slow cooked to perfection and it was dry and difficult to chew and swallow certainly not worth the £14 price tag. The nasi chicken also £14 was disgusting, it was so dry and overcooked and as stated earlier it was semi cold and tasted horrible with the sauce. The only nice dish was the Singapore noodles which was served hot and was tasty. Overall pretty bad I’m afraid. The wine was also disgusting. It was a Chilean Sav Blanc worth about £2 to buy but available to us at £22! We drank it out of desperation and commiseration of such a poor experience. We never left a payment for service which we always generously do as the service was poor in its organisation and in delivering the meal. Overall the meal cost over £70 for what we ate and drank this was in no way value for money. The food was in places cold dry and tasteless. The wine was expensive and insipid. We did not enjoy ourselves and will not be returning. I’m surprised the experience was so poor given recent reviews but this is a true and honest account of our experience.

The pumpkin croquettes and vegetable gyoza with sweet chilli sauce were a must, as were the kuey teow noodles and creamy beef rendang. The roti canai were melt-in-the-mouth delicate and delicious, all washed down - rather naughtily - with a crisp glass of Pinot Grigio. Can't get food like this where I live, so I ordered a take away of some of the above for the hubster's evening meal, for which I received a generous dollop of brownie points. If you love well prepared Asian food, do visit the Golden Mayfair, you won't regret it!

First went here a while back. We often travel to Malaysia and love the food this restaurant serves the best and most authentic Malaysian food I have eaten in the UK. Everything is freshly cooked, the Roti dishes are to die for as are the noodle and curry dishes. We have taken friends here who have also become regular customers and even taken a large group as a Chinese New Year celebration and everyone had a fantastic experience.

Really impressed, my mother isn’t the easiest to please with food and it was a gamble choosing Malaysian on a Sunday rather than a roast but both of us could not fault the food here! Everything cooked fresh and even the spring rolls were freshly made ! We will 100% be back

We have been meaning to pop into here for a while. As we were nearby on a Sunday we went for lunch, and we were not disappointed. The noodle dish I had was excellent as was the Roti Canai my wife had. We will be going back.

Chanced upon this Restaurant while walking into town. Malaysian classic street food . Tasty and Authentic. Give it a try. Good price point and generous portions. The Laska was good and.my wife had the mee goreng which she said was tasty. The chicken curry for the Roti Chanai was very tasty and lemak. Finally a Malaysian Restaurant serving classics which is decent.

The food was authentic and flavoursome which is hard to find in Southend. We ordered the laksa, nasi lemak, char kway teow, chicken satay skewers and spring rolls. The highlight was the chicken satay skewers, the meat was soft and juicy and the sauce was on point, which is hard to find even in central London. Shout out to the waitress Aled! She was super friendly and kept the two year old occupied whilst we ate. Overall, had a great meal and we will definitely be back as we want to try the hainanese chicken rice which is only available on the weekends.

Extremely kind and helpful staff and of course delicious food! They missed something on my order by accident once and the lovely lady delivered it to my house and added something on the house. Not promising the same but they’re good customer orientated people.

It was a little cold in there, they have some delicious dishes and their roti were something so light, crispy and perfection. The beef that we had was so tender and their flavoursome, apart from the wonton soup which was a little bland.

Food is delicious. Highly recommend the Malaysian chicken curry, beef rendeng, roti canai (breads) and fried chicken gyoza. Lovely friendly staff. Reason I couldn't give 5 stars is because they need to get meals out closer to each other. I had finished before others got their meals. Well worth a visit.

Great to have a different cuisine type in yhe area and these guys nailed it. There's a sign that says the meals may take some time as they are all cooked to order. That's fair. Make sure you know what to expect. We didn't wait long at all but it wasn't busy as we were early. The food was very very good and the service very friendly. We even got tips on roti making. Must visit venue.

I just love this place!! Quality of food is fantastic. We actually ordered three mains to share between us because everything sounded so yummy! The Malaysian chicken curry with the roti was delicious and the noodles with char Sui pork came with a wonton soup which was also lovely. Reasonable prices too!

Dropped in for an impromptu dinner on a Thursday night. There was a decent crowd but not full. We shared the xi long bao and the pork and crab spring rolls as starters. The xi long bao were passable dumplings but not soup dumplings but the spring rolls were great. We followed that up with roti (soft and flakey) and laksa. The laksa was fantastic. It had a slightly deeper flavour than a normal curry laksa, almost a cross between a Asam Laksa and a curry laksa. The price is incredibly reasonable and we live local so will be going back.

Loved our first meal eating in here. The service was really friendly, and the food was delicious. You can tell this was cooked fresh and care was taken to make sure it was authentic. Food was miles ahead of when it used to be Chinese. Will definitely be telling our friends and family to try this restaurant!

My husband and I just had an amazing meal at the Golden Mayfair. The food was so tasty and the owners who also cook the food are such lovely genuine people. They deserve every success as they put their heart and soul into the food and experience for their customers. They have only been open for 4 months after taking the business solely into their own hands and turning it around into something very special. This is a gem of place. Fab Malaysian food- casual dining - street food. In the past it may have been Chinese but it’s not now. We had roti canai with dhal, followed by penang char keow tao (apologies for the spelling) and then the Ayam Nasai something that had the anchovy Sambal. It reminded us of our travels through Malaysia, and we will be coming back here for more food - until our next travels abroad

I come here somewhat frequently and I must say I really approve of their rebranding into primarily Malaysian cuisine. It's so refreshing to see a thriving Malaysian restaurant, as those are hard to come by in Westcliff. Great food, and also great service. My personal favourite has to be the beef renddang but looking forward to trying some other dishes on a future visit!

The chicken Malaysian curry was delicious with really nice puffy flatbreads and coconut rice.

Went on Saturday night and had a great meal, Roti Canai, Curry Laksa and Beef Rendang. Served by very friendly staff and the price was very reasonable too. Highly recommended and a nice change from Indian and Chinese food

It is not easy to find a Malaysian restaurant in this area, but to find a good one with authentic tasting dishes is wonderful. The beef rendang is exceptional and we chatted the whole meal comparing our food to what we get on our visits to Malaysia. Good service, clean and reasonably priced added to a great visit. We will be back!

Fantastic food, this is the real deal folks, please go and try. After many years living in the Far East I was desperate to find a restaurant which reflected the best side of Asian - and particularly Malay - cooking. On a trip to Southend, we visited this new restaurant and it did not disappoint. The service was excellent, happy and helpful, and the food was out of this world delicious - proper authentic Asian cuisine. Big portions at very reasonable prices and the wine was good too! We went back 2 days later and then again for a take away meal, and will definitely eat there again on our next visit to Westcliff. Enjoy yourselves - I think you will!

I often pop in with my family as it’s so local. We have never had a bad meal. I really enjoyed the Chinese Food, always tasty and plentiful. Tried the Malaysian street food equally delicious and my granddaughter unfortunately fell in love with the Roti dipped in sugar. Will definitely be back.

Please try this restaurant if you want to have a taste of Malaysian hawker street food. Do try the chicken satay, roti canai, nasi lemak, curry laksa, hainanese chicken rice and iced milo. Big portion. I’m glad they serve these food now. Even though previous Chinese food was good but now you get to taste the exotic Malaysian food which you can only find in London.

First time back to Golden Mayfair since they rebranded into a Malaysian restaurant, the food was so delicious, everything was slow cooked to perfection and can really taste the depth of flavour. The service is always warm and friendly. Highly recommend the rangdang, curry laksa and Roti Canai! My partner has a peanut allergy and they are also very on it!

Very authentic Malaysian food - love the homemade chicken satay with peanut sauce, wonton noodles were amazing and also char kway teow. Teh susu- tea with condensed milk and iced Milo were heavenly! Brings me back to my childhood! Definitely recommend!

We found this place after a sunny day out at Southend. Lovely authentic dishes and the staff were very friendly. We ordered several dishes to share among 4 people. Took some photos at the start but got too engross eating and forgot to take photos of all the other dishes. The satay chicken with peanut sauce was amazing. Kan Lo Mein brought back the taste of home. Roti canai with curry was extremely tasty. The sambal chilli that came with the nasi lemak had little anchovies and was delicious. Beef rendang was very tender. My husband like the char kway teow as well. All the dishes were lovely and is hard to choose a favourite. We also had milo and milk tea which was just the right sweetness. All in all, a great dinner. Is a lovely place to go for a meal and we will certainly be back

Amazing food (also the best chicken fried rice I’ve ever had)

This is possibly the worst Chinese I have ever had. The duck was not crispy but soggy, the beef with ginger and spring onion was inedible and had to be binned and the beef with black bean sauce had no flavour. Nobody could possibly get this so wrong!!

The BEST Chinese in the area by far. The food is always good and the staff are so lovely! They are always accommodating to my allergies and the staff know the menu off by heart (literally every single ingredient), so I can always ask what foods are OK for me to eat, and the staff even change dishes for me too.

Superb! Best chinese food ever ! Amazing for quality and price . We were fasting in Ramadan and arrived early ,owner Senny was so friendly and made us feel very welcomed. If you're visiting Southend on sea, then this is the best spot for late lunch or dinner. 🤩🤩 Highly recommended!

First time dining out here with friends last week. The food was AMAZING! Really generous portions, super fresh and tasty. For four people we had three dishes to start (to share) and six for dinner, as well as a bottle of wine and four beers, and it only came to £125 - VERY reasonable considering how much we had. The staff were so friendly, and even gave us all a free drink at the end of our meal. 100% would recommend this place, and definitely will be returning.

NEVER AGAIN…. This used to be my favourite takeaway but now no thank you. Recently they have changed their chef and menu. BIGGEST MISTAKE IN HISTORY. Honestly I can’t advise people against this place more. The food was terrible. I had the lemon chicken which tasted like cardboard and the chicken was overdone. The egg fried rice, where’s the egg? This was plain boiled with the smallest amount of egg to be scene. When I went to discuss the issue with the manager she tried saying that the food was good and wouldn‘t listen to my feedback. When I asked for a refund she wouldn’t even offer a part refund or an apology. Not even offer to replace the food. We will never try this place again because of how poor her customer service was. I mentioned that in a restaurant, owners would offer to re-cook the meal but not here.

We had duck pancakes - No meat on the duck, it was all bone (rib cage), wasn’t crispy & just tasted of aniseed, barely any hoisin sauce. We had chicken & cashew nuts - chicken rubbery & tasted mostly of garlic, beef in black bean sauce tasted mostly of soy sauce, Singapore rice noodles were dry - not much flavour, prawn balls were stodgy. Worst take-away Chinese I’ve ever had!!! Really annoying as it cost £36 & neither of us could eat it 😩. Went for a meal in there a few months before & the food then was really good. Phoned & told them; the lady on the phone was polite & courteous but no refund or discount was offered. We won’t be going back.
