The margaritas had no salt on the rim, at £8 each, I think you could spare some saltThe nachos were disgusting, I couldn’t eat it, I told the waitress, nothing...... we used to be regulars before lockdown and it was our first night out in a year, we won’t be back . It looked like it was sloped on the plate and zapped in the microwave for 5 minutes

For some reason the manager decided not to take part in the eat out to help out scheme which was some what annoying. 6 of us met for dinner 2 of us stayed in the hotel for one night. Hotel very nice and clean nothing negative to say. The food was quite mediocre nothing very special but the staff were very pleasant. Breafast was good with plenty to keep us going.

Our first Sunday Lunch out this year!An unplanned visit, we were staying in the area and after passing by and checked out the menu decided to eat out.We arrived at that ‘in between’ time c1645 to a very quiet restaurant (perfect in these Covid times) The restaurant was well organised from a Covid perspective. Good menu selection but we decided to opt for the special Sunday Lunch menu, which in itself had a great selection. It was excellent. Absolutely delicious, beautifully presented, generous portions. We were looked after by Mike who made us very comfortable and welcome. Will definitely visit again

Called with my wife and family for an 80th birthday lunch. The staff were very good showing us to our seats and getting drinks ordered. My wife had the ravioli , mum in law tagliatelle and myself the lamb Henry. My wifes ravioli was just a white flavourless mush, full of water, we sent that back,my lamb Henry was only a lamb shank and not shoulder, tasted ok but not what it should have been. Mum laws tagliatelle was really tasteless, similar to my wifes ravioli. I did complain to the waitress and hopefully this was taken forward with the chef. Sad really as we have dined here of many occasions and always found the food of a good standard. Maybe this just a post covid blip, I hope so.

We visited recently for Sunday lunch and we were very happy so much so we came again the other evening to enjoy a bar meal however the food quality was poor in comparison to Sunday Lunch. The starters were honestly delicious as expected but when the mains arrived this is when the evening meal became very disappointing.I pretty much left the majority of my meal as did the wife and clearly the staff knew we were not happy as not once did they ask if everything was alright......Simply asking this is basic customer service and can make a huge difference in making the paying customer feel valued.Sadly we won't be back or be able to recommend to others, Such a shame. There's a lot of choice when eating out in Maryport and your lack of customer service is one reason which has simply pushed us to try the other local establishments instead.

No disabled access of facilities, went to a funeral tea was told by owner there was no disabled access but we could lift them in up the steps . Then we’re told if there’s a fire it’s your responsibility to get them out , once inside no toilet for disabled person . Funeral tea soup vegetable broth was Luke warm and a excess of cornflour used , then sandwich to follow which were ok . Still shocked that a new modern building had no disabled access! Shocking !

I had been wanting to give the new 'Antonios' restaurant section of the Golden Lion Hotel a taste since it opened and finally got in to use a Christmas voucher with my wife.Hospitality on arrival was good. The place has a modern look.We were shown to our seats at a table for two in the window, which was nice.We were asked if we would like a drink, my wife ordered a cocktail which was fine, but when I asked for a pint of real ale, the response was 'you can get that in the other bar in the main hotel, feel free to walk in and buy one then come back in with it', to which I responded 'it's ok, I'll just do without a drink, thanks', the staff didn't seem concerned that a customer wasn't happy. We ordered the food, it's a bit on the expensive side, but I already new this, so not a real complaint.I ordered the 'surf and turf' and asked them if I could choose how the steak part was cooked, the response was 'no', as the steak comes as strips, but I did think that at least mentioning that I like my normal steak 'blue'or 'rare' would mean they would take it into consideration. I also ordered the 'street noodles'.My wife ordered the buttermilk chicken and street fried rice. The food came very quickly, almost too quick to have been cooked from fresh, and we tucked in, it was instantly obvious that they hadn't listened to me saying that I like rare steak, it wouldn't of been too bad if the steak had been cooked medium or medium to well done, but it was well done to burned, so I left the steak. The prawns part of the surf and turf was beautiful as was the noodles. My wife enjoyed the chicken and rice as well as the cocktail. When we came to pay, we waited a while and then realised that we had to go to the bar, we had to wait 10 minutes or so as they were serving drinks to others. They gave us the bill, which we paid, but there was no question from them to ask if everything was alright with the meal, so I didn't mention it as I didn't feel comfortable enough with all the people at the bar to do so.If they had came to the table and saw that I'd left the steak and then asked if everything was ok I would of them felt like I could of mentioned the burned steak. My verdict is:Nice, fancy looking place, either understaffed or overworked staff, expensive, small portions.

We arrived early hoping for cocktails and food. The cocktails were very slow to arrive with items substituted because ‘we’ve run out of passion fruit’. Having to chase up another round was disappointing and the service didn’t get any better. The menu is extensive - perhaps this is the issue - we ordered two ‘small plates’ and. ‘Side’ each and then we waited, and we waited and we waited. No more drinks were forthcoming and the water that we ordered for the table failed to arrive. When the food did begin in arrive it was clear that several of the dishes had been sitting for some time because they were completely cold. These were sent back and returned - clearly microwaved. The food, generally, was tasty but disappointing. The Spanish potatoes had so much chilli on them that they were inedible. The teriyaki beef was tasty and probably the best item that we ordered. Such a shame that it was lukewarm. Having managed to order a bottle of prosecco when the waitress brought the re-heated food, we were again disappointed that no other drinks orders were taken or even offered. The room was noisy as there were groups of people who were just there for the drinks - that would be fine but it’s not great if you are there for a meal. Overall a very disappointing experience. I know that Antonio’s hasn’t been open very long and they have a lot of young staff. Perhaps the kitchen is understaffed on a Sunday at 6.00pm. The decor is strangely 1980s velour and the big windows mean you have the drunken locals staring at you while you wait for your food. Our bill came to £220 for six of us. We won’t be rushing back

We'd cycled from Maryport to Allenby this morning, and called into a bar there (I won't mention their name) who were advertising outside "two courses for £7.50", but when we got inside the menu was very basic and the interior a little grotty. So pleased that we chose not to eat there and returning to Maryport came across the Golden Lion. Such a difference. It was clean and comfortable, with an excellent Lunchtime menu offering a good choice of two courses for £7.50.I had a breaded Brie starter, then main of lambs liver, mashed potatoes, carrots and peas. My wife had Macaroni cheese bake and an enormous chocolate brownie with ice cream for desert. The service was really attentive and we felt the food was really well presented and good quality.I had a pint of Lowewater's Gold Beer which I also felt was a nice drink.I'd certainly be happy at recommending the Golden Lion to other travellers. The restaurant also has some history with Robert Stephenson attending a meeting here about the railway back in 1836.

Travelled to Cumbria on business, decided to look for a hotel in Marypor t as I had not been there before. What a beautiful little harbour area, with The Golden Lion' about a minute away. Friendly staff, excellent restaurant, decent beers.. Room was fine for me on my own, perhaps a little small for a couple but still manageable. Bed was again fine for me but not huge for two. View from my window, across and down to the harbour , was breathtaking! This is a town full of history and one you shouldn't miss!

It was derby football weekend after watching the match went to look for a place to eat. We spotted this place earlier in the day with its advertising board outside offering a festive menu. On entering the restaurant was empty except for a family just finishing off. Ashton showed us to a table and said she would be back to take our drinks order (she was also serving in the bar). Eventually she reappeared by this time our expectations were not high as to what to expect for the food. The menu was really extensive but we decided to opt for the festive menu. I had the mango avocado smoked chicken to start it was awesome light refreshing and so tasty the wife had pea and ham soup again she said one of the tastiest. We then had the turkey roast it was served with all the trimmings and it looked delicious arranged in a fine dining sort of way and it came with a side dish of perfectly cooked vegetables.

Ordered our food, 2 fish and chips....when it arrived the fish was barely cooked and raw/cold in the middle. Obviously we sent it back and as it actually looked very good we opted to try the fish again...this time it was well cooked although still a bit wet inside. Not sure what the meat was, some beef, some kidney and some bizarre veal or pork type cubed meat.. very bizarre and not very tsdty, in fact it tasted sour which I convinced myself was due to an ale gravy, did it have ale in it..? Eaten here a few times now and really enjoyed our family get together in the Golden Lion 8th March. Great staff, good food and faultless surroundings... I'm struggling to understand the previous (negative) review as it surely describes a different venue?Well done & thanks!

Romantic décor. Outstanding food in a good price - nicely presented on the plate. Friendly staff. The menu is very extensive so everyone can find something for themselves. Plenty to choose from for vegetarians as well. We had King Prawns and Breaded Mushrooms for starter (both cooked to perfection). For the main course we ordered Mushroom Stroganoff and Chicken Cordon Bleu. We enjoyed our food very much. Geoff (the head chef) definitely knows his stuff. If you are in Maryport and you are hungry this is the best choice. Recommend to everybody.

It never ceases to amaze me when people are helping themselves to spurious revues about food. Trip Advisor is by far the best web site for information about where to stay and eat in the world therefore it also lends itself to vindictive comments about a sandwich, Margerette,s comments are purely dumfounded. I ate at the Golden Lion last night with my wife the staff were young and very professional, i had the roast duck and my wife had a lamb henry, we ate everything on the plate and loved it, we did leave a rather substantial tip to thank everyone involved with our experience. We are back for the Blues festival at the end of the month and will be eating here again

A work colleague recommended the Golden Lion bistro so I visited with a friend last week for lunch. The menu is quite extensive so it was quite difficult to choose at first. I had the mushrooms in a filo basket, which was lovely and light, really tasty. My friend had the scallops, which he said were perfectly cooked. My main was the suet pudding: steak and mushrooms, which could have been really heavy, but wasn’t. The pastry was just right, obviously home made, and just the right amount of gravy. My friend had the pork loin which he said was excellent, and he was particularly impressed with the veg! As a previous reviewer mentioned, the carrot mash is very good. This is a hidden gem of a restaurant, which has obviously undergone a recent refurbishment. The service was spot on, without being intrusive. As I live near Maryport, I will definitely go again, especially for the suet pudding!

Came here for a nice meal with my friend (it's my 12th visit so far this year) I've got to say yet again I wasn't left disappointed. The food was lovely (scallops and trio of sausage) followed by fish and duck afterwards. Again all very beautiful and will definitely come back again.

I came to Maryport for the Harbour Festival earlier this year and tried this hotel for a Sunday lunch. I was eating on my own but it didn't feel too uncomfortable so the hotel scores points for this. Service was very timely considering it was busy. The roast beef was excellent, with lovely tasty gravy, obviously home made Yorkshire puddings and a great carrot mash. There was a family on the next table who kept saying how good it was, apart from there being "too much" salad! They seemed to be regulars, and the restaurant was full. I couldn't manage a pudding but did have a cappuccino. Will be back.

We attended a function here and were served stale dry sandwiches and about half a dozen chips each and a hot drink. I couldn't believe what they were charging for this awful food.It is a shame that the food was so bad because it is a great venue with friendly staff. We were going to book a large family birthday party here but because of the food we are now going elsewhere.Pull your socks up Golden Lion, I know there isn't much competition in Maryport but you could do so much better!

Im from Maryport and come from a family who've always had trawlers, so I know my seafood. And these scallops were terrible. We waited a ridiculously long time to be served considering we were the only table in there and when it arrived I was very disappointed. £7 for 3 very tatty looking small scallops & 3 small pieces of black pudding. As I've never eaten anything else there I can comment, but I'd strongly suggest that they take this off the menu as its appalling value for money & not worthy to be served to my cat!

I have visited the Golden Lion a few times now since it was reopened. I have yet to be wowed. The surroundings are beautiful in the lovely town of Maryport, and the views are fantastic. The decour is to a high quality and by the looks of it no expense was spared. However I have yet to recieve the quality of service that matches. The first time my family and I visited we sat in the bar area and ordered bar food. My partener ordered a mixed grill and his meal came on 3 different plates because items were missing or werent cooked correctly. Another time I went with his parents and our food took hours (literally) to arrive. There was only one other table occupied. Our party was only 4 adults and 2 children. When we eventually got our food it was cold and the steaks were tasteless. When my father in law was asked how his meal was he mentioned he wasnt happy but the waitress ignored his comment and walked off. This same visit we ordered some deserts... at a risk of waiting yet again... and my young son had previously enjoyed a chocolate pot with a shortbread biscuit, so he ordered it again. My son was 8 at the time. When he finally got it he tried eating it and kept playing with it. When I asked what was up he said it tasted funny. I tried it myself and it was swimming in rum. I was extremely annoyed that the waiter had taken this order from my son and not mentioned it contained alcohol. We were not impressed. The last time I went I went with my family so there were a good number of us, one of the waiters was fantastic and kept making sure we were happy. The food was better but we still had to wait a while for it, so we decided against having deserts. I would go back because I am hoping that it will get better, but like I said I am still waiting. This is a beautiful hotel that has a room for wedding functions etc.... just a shame that the waiting on staff let it down slightly. On a plus note they are all polite... just maybe need a bit more motivation.

The menu states that all dishes are freshly prepared on the premises, that is definately not the case!!! We were the only 2 customers in the beautifully appointed restaurant and were about to find out why the place was empty. We placed our orders and while waiting the nice waiter served us "homemade bread" i could not cut my roll open and when trying to eat was like rubber, due to being pinged in the micro for far too long.I asked the waiter to ask the chef to taste what he had just served and his response was as we had already discovered.our combo starter arrived, frozen breaded mushrooms, battered prawns, breaded chicken goujons ect. The chef admited to the chicken being frozen but would not confirm the freshness of the rest!!!!Main courses of Homemade chicken cordon bleu, was a reformed processed dish, accompanied with sour almost brown broccoli, most unapetising.Mine was roast rump of lamb, pan roasted vegetables, the veg was boiled and never went near a pan to be roasted. We asked the waiter to remove the horrible food we were served. The chef came to speak to us and assured us all the food he had prepared that day!! but did of course admit that the chicken was frozen. He seems to be confused between the diffrence of fresh and freshly frozen.Such a lovely restaurant that deserves food to match.

We're a team of women morris dancers, and with our husbands/partners, we have a "Winter Feast" each year in January, choosing a different local restaurant each time.I live near Maryport, and had watched with interest as the Golden Lion, which had reached a sad state of delapidation over the years, was completely refurbished from top to bottom by a local businessman. As soon as it reopened for business my other half and I went for a meal there, and thoroughly enjoyed it. We've been back a couple of times since. The big event was last night - a part of 27, with a variety of dietary needs. I, for example, need both gluten- and dairy-free food, and 2 others in our party are also gluten-free. I chatted to the staff in the weeks before the meal, and they assured me that their experienced chefs could make practically anything on the menu gluten-free so long as they had prior warning. They make things like bread and Yorkshire puddings from scratch for people like me on special diets, and actually, looking at the food the others had, I think even the ordinary bread was made on the premises. Nothing's out of a packet - all the food seems to be made from scratch in the kitchen. The evening was a triumph, and several of our group said that it was the best Winter Feast they'd ever attended. (The downside is that they want me to organise next year's one too...) Everyone enjoyed their meals. The staff couldn't be nicer. Not only are they friendly and helpful, they simply do their jobs well. There's always a small delay between the first and the last person being served when you're a large group eating together, but nobody had to wait too long for their food. (I've been in places where some people were still waiting while others had finished. Nothing like that here!)They didn't make a big deal of my awkward dietary requirements - just brought me my own specially made bread while everyone else got the standard - also really nice - stuff; brought my Lamb Henry with gluten-free gravy (so tasty!) and my "lucky dip" dessert (all I'd said was I'd eat anything so long as it didn't contain gluten, dairy or chocolate) was wonderful - pears stewed in wine or something with lemon sorbet on the side. The presentation of the food is good too, on big square or rectangular plates. All the meals looked as nice as they tasted. The actual premises are very tasteful, and the location just above the harbour is great. Even the fixtures and fittings in the toilets are good quality. I think everyone in our party will be recommending the Golden Lion to their friends. Well done everyone! I'm delighted to give this place 5 stars and hope they go from strength to strength.

We visited this restaurant last year and were blown away by the food. One year later, we did a revisit to see if it was still as good. It was noticably quieter but we stayed for lunch, and had snacks this year rather than mains. Two Jacket Potatoes were ordered, piping hot and enormous. I ordered the Prawn Marie Rose and my companion Cheese and Beans. To be honest would have loved more filling, the prawns were separate to the sauce if that makes sense, and wasn't as good as last year.Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and a good selection of beers competitively make me recommend it still, I just hope standards aren't slipping at a venue that was great this time last year. The view is amazing by the way

I had a latte which was lovely and my friendcsaid her cappuccino was one if the vest she'd had. The staff were so helpful and friendly and we will definitely return.

We stayed here for 2 nights and I cannot recommend this place highly enough. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. The rooms are large, bright with some spectacular views and those special touches such as little toiletries for your use. The bath in our room was so opulent I could have stayed in there all evening. The dining area is quite niche you can have quiet discreet corners for a romantic evening or more open. The food is excellent- if I had 1 thing to say that was negative, it would be that I wouldn’t have a starter so I could have a dessert, I found each time I did I just didn’t have room to have one! The main thing for me was the staff. The staff quite simply made it for me. NOTHING was too much trouble, they were friendly, welcoming and went above and beyond , yet at the same time let us be. If you want somewhere, where you can be comfortable, away from it all and have excellent accommodation and food this is the place.

Sad to say that our trip there was a a big disappointment when it come to the food. We all had beef, it was dry and chewy. When we talked to the waiter, we have been told that is the way the chef does it. It is a shame that they only sell well done cuts of meat...

My wife and I went for a trip to Lowther Castle and Gardens with the in-laws, and after such awful weather we decided to travel to Cockermouth to treat ourselves to the excellent Fredricks which we've visited many times before. We started with the seafood platter / selection with a portion of chips for the young one. It's a great selection of items for fish lovers! After, we ordered some lovely main dishes, enough for 3 adults and 2 kids (1 kids meal of pizza and chips!) Lovely meal to end of evening. Will be back when next in the area.
