Golden Galleon in Suffolk Coastal

Ate here Monday night, haddock and chips to a good standard, decently priced too. oddly they serve it in a bag, then wrap the bag in paper? Not seen that before!

£16.50 for a medium cod and a medium cod and chips. Small portion , whoever fillets the fiah should be sacked, full of bones, batter was slightly overdone, would not go back, another over rated fish shop on the Suffolk coast. Beccles Cod House is 100 times better.

The lady serving was very friendly and the food was great. I would highly recommend this. The condiments being regionally sourced was also a nice touch.

We stopped here for lunch when visiting Aldeburgh for the afternoon. The restaurant was full when we arrived so we had to wait outside for a short while, the queueing system was a bit of a pain as we walked up the stairs with kids and bags etc, only to be told we need to go back down and wait outside. Once inside we had a good table with plenty of room and the service was good. We ordered cod and chips and the food was very nice with delicious sauces. We had a nice meal and the prices were reasonable, it’s worth a visit.

Had a lovely lunch of fish and chips from the Golden Galleon today. Huge portion, cooked to order, what’s not to like . Recommended.

Slingin some serious fish this place a real ride on the taste train, the chips. The fish. The sausage. That sweet sweet curry sauce. Ima tell you now, hit this spot ! Most likely the best fish and chips in England. Proper🎣

Overpriced, mediocre quality , small portions. Battered sausage and chips. The sausage had a very fine smear of soggy batter, sausage was watery inside, chips had an odd texture and tasted of stale oil! Much like Thier other chip shop at the end of the street overpriced and small portion size.

It was a bit of a mixed bag, the chips weren't great, and the bun on my sons burger was rock solid, there was no onion vinegar. However the cod and nuggets were good, the kids menu is good and the prices are reasonable.

Had a large cod today 27/12, and it was excellent! Absolutely delicious! Ordered a medium chips to go with it, and the portion was just too large for me. I think it was very good value for money at £10, to be honest. Service was very quick and extremely friendly.

Tremendous fish and chips. Definitely the best on the coast and without doubt the best value too. Really generous haddock, delicious chips and you can't beat a bag of scraps!!

Best fish and chip shop in Aldeburgh. Had freshly cooked scampi and a medium cod, both with chips. The cod was so tasty and cooked in a light batter. Chips good and not too greasy. Always good to buy from here and eat on the sea wall by the beach. Good value for money.

Wasn’t much fish mostly batter which wasn’t great. Very over cooked. Whereas the chips weren’t cooked enough. Thought from the queue that it would be good. Very disappointed.

Brilliant staff, clean kitchen and quick service. The fish and chips were delicious and compared to the prices of the delis, bakeries and restaurants on the same street its an absolute bargain

We eat here on Saturday and were lucky to secure a table in the Upper Deck on the first floor. The service was excellent and the fish and chips delicious. Highly recommended.

One of the highlights of this lovely town included a visit to this famous establishment to enjoy the wonderful fish and chips. Not anymore! Tried to find some fish in the thick layer of batter and the weird, badly cut chips were a joke. The whole family were so disappointed. What has happened to this once fine fish and chip shop? Such a shame. We won’t be going there again.

Had the best fish and chips ever today. So many fish and chip shops fry when you order, but this place have them ready. So you have a fish that is drained of fat and no soggy batter underneath.They are so busy the fish is still freshly cooked, the chips are great too. I ordered a large fish and trust me it was large and great value. The staff are very friendly so an easy five stars.

Got a lovely take away here whilst staying in the town on holiday. Not too greasy. Chips and peas delicious. Large haddock well worth it. Friendly service

It’s part of th3 tradition in Aldeburgh but we ate last night and it was bloody awful. 40 minutes in a queue waiting for an undersized Piece of grey cod fried in a really heavy batter to make it look bigger . We have a house in the next and will be going to Seahawks in Leiston exclusively in future.

Best chip shop in Hereford with a brilliant menu 10/10. I would definitely come here again. Delivery was ready very quick

Well worth the queue on a Monday night, deliciously light and crispy battered fish and tasty chips. Despite being very busy on a hot evening, the staff were absolutely lovely.

Enjoyed an amazing lunch here of cod ( fresh and tasty with crisp batter), chips ( plentiful and delicious), mushy peas ( yum, yum), stoked tartare sauce ( quality) for a very reasonable £15.90. excellent value and no room for dessert! Very prompt service with friendly obliging staff. Highly recommend.

Medium Cod was the size of a fish finger with fatty soggy batter. Loads of fish sitting in the cabinet probably for hours. Steak pie was just gravy with a couple of pea sized bits of beef. The mushy peas were like a table spoon in a pot. Not acceptable. Seems this firm have a monopoly in Aldeburgh .. seems to me the market is wide open for an enterprising person to offer some competition to this lazy firm

Just used the 'take away' part. Fish and chips were incredibly good. Not tasted as good as that for a long while elsewhere. Not greasy. A lot of on street parking. A short walk of about 100yds and you can use the public benches along the beach front (beach is stones). Excellent experience.

Ordered large cod and chips today and it was honestly like a child’s portion. Handful of chips at most. Fish was ok but caked in batter. Lady serving was a bit moody too. Wouldn’t recommend.

Oh Dear. Absolutely tiny portion. Ordered a Medium Haddock & chips for £9. After a long wait I genuinely thought I'd been given a child's portion by mistake. Thick, greasy batter hid disappointingly dry, overcooked fish. Even the seagulls didn't bother me as much as usual. I've been coming to Aldeburgh for years but I'm afraid that The Golden Galleon is now off the list.

Very disappointed with the fish there was too much batter and it's was very thick not much fish at all. Sorry wouldn't visit again, but the staff were very nice.

Had medium cod and chips. The portion size was smaller than expected, the chips were cut thin, therefore mostly crispy and overcooked. The cod had so many bones it was unenjoyable to eat, due to the fear of swallowing a bone. I think it was poorly cut with at least a dozen bones remaining (pictured)

Nice upstairs restaurant with very good fish and chips. Low alcohol beer sold. Good clean loos.

Visited on 24th March literally 10 minutes before closure, what impressed me was they fulfilled every order cooking to the last customer. Rachel and the team worked like a well oiled machine, professional, polite and efficient. The portion size was more than generous and the prices were very good. Nothing quite beats fish n chips at the coast whilst watching the moon rise.

Simple service on wooden tables with great fish and chips. If you need to sit down then head up stairs and grab a table for a swift and friendly service.

We’d heard a lot of good things about this fish and chip shop but we visited today and the food and service was appalling!! We arrived around 12, so understandable they were starting the lunch time rush, so expected a bit of a wait. Luckily there was only one couple in front of us. The guy serving took their order, and ignored us as we stood there, didn’t acknowledge us at all, he wasn’t doing serving, or doing anything, just stood chatting to his co worker in the back. After almost 10 minutes he finished his conversation and decided to serve us. It didn’t take us that long to get our food which was good, but long enough to hear the staff shouting to each other about their private lives… He called us as he was wrapping, but didn’t actually wrap it. He threw it in a paper bag and shoved it at us! When it came to eating it, the food was below average, the fish was tasteless and definitely not fresh and the chips were quite hard. I certainly won’t be returning and from reading other reviews this shop seems to have declined from what it used to be.

A little apprehensive after earlier visits to their other shop and having been so disappointed, coupled with more awful reviews on this site from others and we noticed that there was no queue and an empty shop @12.30 pm on a Friday ?? (there was always a long queue at this shop even before it opened ! !.) We decided to try The Golden Galleon, the young lady behind the counter was bright and cheerful and took our order with a smile, the chips were freshly cooked and crispy, topped off with the pile of scraps we requested, the Haddock was absolutely super, fresh and expertly cooked with crispy batter and cooked in traditional Beef Dripping (if you are vegan, veggie, gluten intolerant or just faddy and horrified at finding the odd fishbone in your fish, go somewhere else) it was like going back to when this town boasted the best traditional fish and chips in East Anglia. Well done, Keep up the good work !

Fish excellent, chips could have been better, got a lot of bits.

Visited based on its reputation, what a disappointment. Scraps for chips and small fish which I doubt was cod. Will not return.

Not at all what I expected. We were actually quite disappointed. That must have been the dearest piece of cod skin I've ever had! I doubt the meat exceeded half an inch in depth and was quite a small portion. The chips, while not undercooked, were more like the air-fried variety; little colour and quite dense. I doubt we'll bother again.

Tastes great but fish is very small compared with the same price in Saxmundham. But without doubt the biggest problem is the amount of bones in the fish. Haven't had a piece of cod without bones in for ages.

Great chips but both haddock and cod had soft non-crispy batter. A big failing for chippy! Not sure how they can serve that?

Thought I'd give this place a go today, and I'm so glad I did! It was by far the best fish and chips I've had in a looong time, and I will be looking forwards to going back again!

Before visiting Suffolk recently, a friend living near us in France recommended this fish and chip shop, so we travelled over 50 miles to it. We think they depend on their recommendations because what we had was the worst fish and chip meal we had eaten in many years. One third of the chips were scraps, something most shops sell separately, and my fish had a longish inedible tail without any fish meat on it. The batter in places was soggy, so over half of the meal was dumped. We wish that we hadn't bothered to travel so far to buy a rubbish meal. We had another fish and chips at a further away place and this meal was far far superior, and cheaper.

Dried up chips with a bug crawling about fish was very measly more batter than fish AWFUL!!

It was a lovely sunny day so what better than getting 2 takeaway cod and chips to sit and eat on the beach front but sadly that's as far as our enjoyment went! The fish looked like it was double battered like cardboard but full of grease! What has gone wrong? We only ate the fish but left all the batter. The chips were passable. Considering the fish and chips were apparently straight out of the fryer they certainly weren't piping hot either....bitterly disappointed.

Called in whilst staying locally in Aldeburgh recently. Had two large portions of fish & chips and was not disappointed. Crispy batter on a huge piece of fish, and lovely well cooked chips. As others have noted the fish had some bones in, but fish do have bones and so you should always expect them in my view.

After driving 42 miles to go to the Golden Galleon on recommendation from friends, we tried the upper deck. When the Medium fish arrived I cut the Burnt Batter open and found just a few Flakes of Fish, in hindsight I should have complained to the waitress but instead we ordered another piece of large Fish to be able to eat Fish with our Chips. The Salad was not all that either. I left a healthy tip - Never again !! Very very disappointed, would never go there again. I think they are living on their Reputation!!!!!?

Large Cod was terrible, had been re-cooked in my opinion. Batter was like crispy cardboard, hardly any fish inside. Chips were okay, mushy peas portion was tiny, cans of coke were lovely :-)

We always eat here when we visit Aldeburgh. However, the older waitress was so rude to me that my husband and I had to walk out. In fact she really upset me but I was determined not to let her ruin my day. Suffice to say, we will not be returning, which I feel is a real shame as the food is usually very good.

Have just had the worst cod and chips I’ve ever had. It was all batter, very little fish, and had bones in it. It was totally dry and the chips were mostly dregs. Very disappointing. Should have checked the reviews before and saved myself the grief.

We enjoyed a gish and chip takeaway on a Friday evening from The Golden Galleon. Fish was tasty and the chips perfectly fried.

We ordered sausage, cod and chips. My friend enjoyed the chips and sausages, however the fish was very poor, thin and mostly batter. The staff were pleasent. We would go here again, but not have the fish.

Lovely family orientated fish and chippy - we have been 7-8 times now and the staff are always friendly, for quality of food is great and good value for money. A positive is also that the restaurant upstairs is air conditioned so a great escape on a hot day!

Just queued up for the famous Aldeburgh fish & chips. The cod was dry and the chips nothing special. I’ve had better at my local back home so maybe infamous is a better word!

Last night of our weeks holiday in Thorpeness and we thought we would try the Alderburgh fish & chip shop. Started off well, but then this disappointment. My wife’s medium cod was dry with quite a few bones. After the first mouthful with bones put her off the rest of her meal completely. Shame. If we weren’t going home tomorrow would pop back and complain. Hey ho.

Best scampi I have had. Cracking chips with very little grease. Also have the classy ketchup and mayo. Good prices too

Fabulous chippy. Great prices and numerous options. Friendly service and just across the road to the beach where you can sit and eat with the most wonderful view of the coast.

Quality cod and chips at a reasonable price good portion size and friendly staff

When we saw the exterior of the building we thought we were going to be paying premium prices for a thimble full of food. We were wrong! It was early evening and there was a small queue outside but we were served very quickly and efficiently. We ordered 1 large haddock (and it was) and chips and 1 cod and chips. The fish was cooked to perfection, tasty, crisp batter, not dry but not overly wet inside. The staff were very friendly and a large cooking team were obviously working hard to get fresh orders out. With the price of fish and chips going up nationally and being from the usually less expensive north we were very happily surprised at just how competitive the prices were. Would definitely return.

Great fish and chips - worth the wait.

Very poor quality fish and chips. Fish, thin dried out and chewy. We were 2nd in queue when they opened at 4.30 so expected hit fresh fish, this felt like lunchtime leftovers. Have been coming here for 25 years but not again. Wish we had gone back to the shop to show them the poor quality they had served. So disappointed and not cheap anymore. What has happened to you, used to be excellent but bit any more. Avoid

Ordered Haddock which was dry and chips were small and bit. Prices to eat upstairs were a lot higher than buying as takeaway from same place! Very disappointed. First and last visit.

YUCK Haddock did not 'taste' at all. Chips were soppy Waste of time and money.

we ordered 3 fish and chips. the cod was crispy, but nothing special. the chips on the other hand weren’t good at all. if you were lucky, you had 3 crispy ones, but the rest was soggy and not tasty at all. overall would not recommend. the staff was very friendly.

After being previously disapointed with the food from here we decided to give it another chance yesterday, Big mistake ! the chips were gritty ( what there were of them ) the fish, sausage and chips looked & tasted mediocre at best , this chippy has clearly become arrogant from its previous good reputation and no longer bothers to try gave two chances, will not be returning and advise others to look elsewhere to the many other local chippys that actually care about the food and custom they give

I had a Cod an chips takeaway and was rushed to A@E because ai choked on a fish bone. I later found 9 more. Im utterly horrified and am warning you to be careful. This could have been your Child. 😒

Having read all the reviews we were very excited to order takeaway fish and chips. However, what a disappointment. One haddock and a cod were dried out - obviously cooked a while ago. The chips were tiny, greasy and soggy. Curry sauce was given in error instead of mushy peas. The 3rd haddock was cooked whilst we waited and was good. Not impressed.

Fish was dry and old, and inedible really - the chips were horribly greasy and unappetising - from the take=away downstairs. Most had to be binned.

If there's a queue half an hour before a chipper opens on a Tuesday evening in a town full of restaurants......you know you're on to a winner. We went for medium cod, chips, & peas and medium haddock, chips, & curry sauce. We got fresh hot tasty meaty fish, as many chips as we could handle, & a nice fruity chipshop curry sauce. Very satisfied customers we took them to rather White Hart Inn down the street & matched with good beer. If you're eating on the seafront, beware the ninja Seagulls! They're impressively quick.

very disappointing. ordered medium haddock and chips, the haddock was small rubbery with no taste at all and chips were greasy. charged 8 pounds for this take away. would not use this plaice again.

Must have been an off night. Cod was dry, with more bones than I have ever had anywhere else, batter heavy and overdone. Chips OK. Not to be repeated.

Lovely cooked fish and chips.easy to find,parking is good,very reasonable priced,nice to get your chips and go up to sea wall to look out to sea while eating them,if your lucky you'll see the seals swimming close to the shore.

Reading the previous reviews I was slightly sceptical of whether to try but thought I would give it a go and share my own experience! We ordered 4x cod & chips, mushy peas & curry sauce. The portion sizes were big with plenty of chips and a large piece of cod. It all tasted good the only thing for me which let it down slightly was there was bones in all of our fish. Please remove bones in future!

Fabulous fish and chips. We always eat in the restaurant. Friendly helpful staff . Best part is the sponge pudding and custard it is huge!!! Best fish and chips in Aldeburgh and we are locals!

Hmmm, after all the hype about Aldeburgh fish and chips we had to try. Ordered ‘medium’ cod and chips and found that the fish portion was very small, chip portion ok and chips nicely cooked. Fish was also nicely cooked and moist and the batter...

Love it, we go there 2 to 3 times a year, nice portions, nice fish, nice chips. Just what you want by the seaside.

Check your order before you leave!! As part of family order included two fish and chips, handed over £35. On arrival back at holiday cottage found only chips no fish. Shop empty when arrived so no other reason for this to happen.

This was the worst fish and chips I have ever eaten. The chips were all bits. The fish was supposedly extra large. It was small and had been in the due heat oven too long. The women serving was extremely large though..

Lovely food as always. Probably a good thing that they are reasonably far away otherwise my waistline may suffer 🤣
