Great friendly gastropub in a beatiful village. We really enjoyed our stay here - there are two shepherds huts in the garden so we were able to enjoy afternoon drinks in the lovely garden followed by dinner, more drinks and then bed! Andy and the team made us feel very welcome, including our dogs. The huts are very comfortable and well equipped. Good value all round. We will be back :)

This was our visit and we were greeted by Andy who was warm and vibrant and welcoming. He suggested a marvelous German beer and a cracking glass of house white for my partner. We met Finn the chef who for age is quit possibly the most talented 20 year old we have ever met. Rebecca had the sea food chowder starter and it was full of flavour and bloody lovely! I had Finn's world famous chill for my main it was the best I've had out. Rebecca had the whygu burger that was melt in your mouth! We will be making it our local for sure! Great atmosphere as well!

Met friends there and had a delicious Sunday lunch, best we have had out for a long time. Staff were great, professional but not overly so. The meal was home cooked, the veg was delicious and the amount of meat was generous, in fact my husband had to finish mine. The meats on offer were beef and pork, 3 of our party had beef and one had the pork which he said was delicious. Desserts were reasonable and very delicious also. My only moan is that we were sat on a table next to someone with a dog, we like dogs and have had dogs in the past, we don’t mind if the dogs are under the tables and not wandering around, especially with the long leads which seem to be popular at the moment. Unfortunately the owner seemed to think that letting her dog wander around our table whilst we were eating was ok, it was a bit off putting as staff were petting the dog, I just hope they washed their hands afterwards and before serving meals.

Wish we had discovered the White Lion sooner during our stay in Ufford. Had dinner here on our last evening. Service was excellent and the chatty landlady made a point of ensuring that we were well catered for. A very friendly pub with a very good kitchen using locally sourced ingredients. All Covid-19 requirement were met and enforced.

I should declare an interest; I moved to this village in part because I have always loved this pub. Now it is “my local” I still love it. Yes, it has its own atmosphere, but if you make just a tiny effort to fit in, you will be made welcome. I have been amused by some of the reviews which describe Gaynor as the “Demon Landlady”; I’ve always found her very pleasant, but she does have firm opinions and a low tolerance of fools. Same for Steve. It is, after all, their pub. No the website isn’t always bang up to date (though it is this week!) but there is such a thing as a telephone...If you want good simple food, good beer and a log fire in winter or a meadow in summer, come here. If you want blandness, go to Wetherspoons.

As part of a longer walk we had this as our lunch stop. We arrived too early to order food, ut spent a pleasant 30 minutes enjoying a pint whilst waiting for the cook to arrive.Good on-site-brewed beer (Longboat) and our order of ham egg and chips was delivered soon after we ordered. Good value and nice simple food. The only eccentricity on display was the sutomer who was there when we arrived. He might have been normal for Norfolk, but this was Suffolk.

Pub of the Year winner 7 times and I can understand why. Beautiful old world pub in a beautiful quiet corner of Suffolk pub food of the finest quality and great cask ales including their own home brew! We shared a Brie in batter starter £7 what great value and beautifully cooked . I had fish and chips with a side order of garden peas (not on the menu) and my partner had the burger both dishes with chunky chips. No sign of a rude landlady just a great welcome and great service. For desert we shared a delicious rice pudding. Not a huge choice but that guarantees fresh food cooked while you wait. Can’t wait to go back.

Sunday lunch out can sometimes be a disappointment. Not however at The White Lion. I was served the tastiest roast lamb ever yesterday, by the wood burner with a very nice glass of Merlot. The pub was busy and we were served by Archie who was very charming . The lamb was plentiful and cooked to perfection, roast potatoes to die for , tasty seasonal vegetables and the best Yorkshire pudding and proper gravy . YUM Friendly atmosphere I would definitely recommend.

I always think of reviews as being the epitome of subjectivity; don't make decisions based on one person's experience of anything, and remember that for every one review posted, there are countless unspoken. The White Lion is a great case in point. How many pubs can you name that have family friendly games on hand, or a turntable for vinyl nights!?We were staying in the village for a few days this week, so took the advice of our hosts and wandered along one evening for a drink and a bite to eat. The welcome was friendly, with young and enthusiastic staff; I was invited to try the ale from their micro brewery before committing to a pint, which I heartily recommend. The food, as mentioned before, is excellent and really is exceptional value. We could have quite happily sat in there all evening. Our personal experience of the pub and the staff was second to none, and we are looking forward to visiting again.

As it was a beautiful day we sat outside in the beer garden. It wasn't busy at all which surprised us as it was a Sunday lunchtime and the outside area is large and attractive. It didn't start particularly well when my husband went inside to order drinks. He was promptly ignored by the landlady who continued her conversation with her small group of regulars. When myself and my friend came to order we were told abruptly that there was only one fish and chips left. As my friend was a vegetarian she asked what other non meat dishes they had. With a look that implied my friend was something she had found on the bottom of her shoe, she reluctantly told us about the small number of vegetarian dishes available. As we had children we asked if some of the meals could be child sized as there wasn't a children's menu available. When I enquired if the burger could be a children's meal I was abruptly told, well a burger is a burger size and there isn't anything we can do about that is there?! It goes on and doesn't get any better...When the food arrived it was actually quite good. It was hot and tasty and was nicely presented. I have since read other reviews on this site that mention the rude landlady and would totally agree about not feeling welcome at all and it very much being a pub welcoming to regulars only. That's fine if the landlady doesn't want any other business but maybe she could make it clear on the website so next time we won't waste our money going somewhere where we are made to feel like an inconvenience. I've never written a TripAdvisor review before but have felt compelled after our rather strange and even slightly amusing (we couldn't quite believe her rudeness!) visit to what could be a beautiful village pub. Luckily as we live in Suffolk there are a vast array of other more welcoming and friendly pubs to visit and we won't be going there again anytime soon!

We arrived ten minutes after the kitchen closed on Saturday so enjoyed our drinks in the sun and returned on Monday, when we ordered the sharing platter and had enough food for a family! Everything was tasty and fresh with a beautifully garlicky houmous, well seasoned chicken, lean ham, mature Cheddar and gorgeous mild rich crumbly blue cheese I forgot to find out about, colourful fresh salad, sharp tzatziki and crunchy coleslaw served with warm chapatti bread and garnished with fresh dill. We stayed @ a super holiday cottage over Xmas in Ufford & also booked in advance, way back in the year for a meal @ The Crown on Xmas Eve (which was amazing) & then an evening meal @ The White Lion for 6.30pm, boxing day. We walked from our holiday cottage, in the pouring rain to The White Lion Boxing Day eve to be greeted by a rather inebriated woman who told us that they were not open! We explained that we had booked months ago, she then tried to convince us that some chap had left several voice mails to tell us that they never open on Boxing Day! We've since read several very negative reports about the place. We've also enlightened our holiday home owners & we are sure they won't be recommending this so called pub to any future holiday tenants. VERY disappointed...

as our local pub we enjoy walking to the lion and meeting our friends. some evenings it is really busy and loud, with the heat from the big open fire incredible. it is a small pub with a large outdoors so summer is the best for a family visit, otherwise it is private parties and groups of drinkers with dogs. I would respond to one comment about the 'cliquey' nature they felt in that a lot of these drinkers are not locals but are obviously drawn to the pub anyway! there are sometimes more dogs than people but gaynor doesn't accept badly behaved ones!food can be really great and Stephen's suet topped pies are fabulous as are his desserts.there are a lot of events on during the year and camping during the beer festival and the fire works party usually squeeze the villagers out in sheer numbers!!

We recently visited The White Lion with some work colleagues for an evening meal. It was a mixture of good and bad but overall it was good enough to make me think I would return if in the area. The menu was limited as they are currently doing refurbishments. We ate outside at some, frankly, old and tatty picnic benches. I had Cajun chicken and specifically requested fries instead of salad however despite the server clearly writing this down my meal duly arrived with a large pile of salad which I do not eat or like at all. This often seems to happen and is very annoying. The meal was served on a circular chopping board and some of the salad and sauce fell off as there was no rim on it. The Cajun chicken was very tender but could have had a bit more Cajun flavour and the fries were excellent. My wife had crab which was served with salad and was very good but there wasn't a lot on her plate for the price charged. Most of the people in our group finished their meals so overall the food itself was good and with bit of improvement elsewhere this would have been a four star meal.

The outside is pretty with tables and chairs set in cubicles and also open. There is a large alfresco area under cover in a marquee and also a very big bbq come oven for the diners to enjoy food cooked outside. The car park is a big meadow which is mowed looking like a back garden infact. A friend had recommended this pub and as it was local to us and rather surprisingly we had never been we thought we would try it for a Friday Lunch. Car park had a couple of cars so we thought great not too busy a lady sat at a table said hello to us as we approached the entrance we replied courteously upon which she responded with " I hope you are not looking for food " err yes we thought about lunch. Sorry no food we have got the builders in with the floor up. Obviously a major event which was ongoing not a one day job. Now they have an all singing all dancing Website full of all the fine things they provide. I know this because I checked it out before we went, would you not think a banner on the web page to explain NO FOOD it is after all the busy season for lots of pubs. They have a microbrewery on site maybe the offer of a sample of their beers might have tempted us to return at some point. Some people just do not know about how to say sorry you have had a wasted journey. Well you had your chance The pub down the road, which we often use is at least reliable and when they had a kitchen problem they had a BBQ on the go so there was something to offer. Strangely the lady here said we would normally have the BBQ on the go a large purpose built job in its own building well you missed again as that was all shut up as well..

We were staying at a cottage in Lower Ufford for the second year running and just had to revisit the White Lion as we had enjoyed it so much last year. We booked for the Saturday night and when we arrived the pub was just about full. Most people were eating or had eaten and were enjoying a post dinner drink. I was served at the bar by Stephen, who is the owner, brewer and chef. I had a pint of his own brewed bitter and my wife and son had a lager. It was nice to see that the lager was not your usual Fosters, Carling, Carlsberg, etc. I cannot remember the name but I had not heard of it and according to my wife and son it was very good. The bitter was excellent - in fact so good that I had to have several more!!! There is a standard menu which is written up on one of the walls and a specials menu on a chalk board. We all ate something different and all agreed that the food was excellent. It was well cooked and the portions were of a good size. The serving staff were efficient and polite and when things quieten down Stephen always has time for a chat. If you are in the area visit the White Lion - you won't be disappointed!!!

My partner infact said it's the best steak he has ever had and was cooked to perfection. We couldn't manage a dessert but thoroughly enjoyed our time here and will definatly come back again

We recently booked a two night break at a small but perfectly formed cottage in Ufford. Having read the reviews of the two pubs in the village we opted first night for the White Lion as was a 3 minute bumble from where we stayed. What a warm welcome, especially for the dog. Ozzy thoroughly enjoyed the evening as did we. The food, whilst not fine dining is far more than average pub grub. Portions generous, produce great quality, prices very reasonable. The ambience is perfect, warming log fire, rustic furniture, candles and subdued lighting. I was with the right person and it was romantic! Needless to say it was hard to resist on the 2nd night too. Well we had lots of the local ales to try! The wine wasn't bad either!

We went on a quiet Friday night in October with the dog and had a lovely meal. We chose it because they take dogs and there were a few other dogs in there when we arrived and they weren't precious about anything. I even got a lesson on golden retriever pedigrees and went away feeling we had been in our own local pub away from home. A lovely atmosphere and would go back if ever in that area again.

This is a charming characterful pub. Very chilled and Stephen is a great cook. Combined with his own micro brewery and special events it's a hard act to beat. It's a 'must try' venue in Suffolk.

We had caught the train at Woodbridge to Wickham Market and were walking back to our starting point so by the time my companion and I had reached Ufford we were very hungry. The White Lion has a very unusual and attractive interior which we enjoyed, it also has its own micro brewery and a selection of barrelled real ales, We tried their own brew which was excellent. Our visit was during a Thursday lunch time and the bar area was very quiet. I ordered one of their pies which was fine albeit a bit bland but why was each component served in a separate receptacle? My companion's burger was okay although I'm old fashioned and would have been alarmed that it was very pink inside - I now its the modern way and as he is a trendy sort of guy it didn't faze him.The female owner/ manager, although a bit distracted, was pleasant. I would happily revisit as the interior is very attractive and in the right company would be very romantic. Perhaps on my next visit I'll choose an appropriate companion!

Myself and my wife recently spent a great week away in Ufford and enjoyed a pleasant evening stroll to the White Lion Inn. It came highly recommended and it didn't disappoint. Full of friendly locals and welcoming landlady. The food was excellent - Fish pie and bangers and mash. It would probably be worth calling to reserve a table. The pub's own beer, Ufford Ales, (brewed next to the washing machine!) was also lovely. - I tried both Longboat and Golden Hoard. There is also plenty of seating outside and parking too. It clearly deserved it's Community Pub of the Year Award.

Lower Ufford is a really great place, surrounded by beautiful suffolk countryside and some really great walks. The White Lion pub we found following a ramble around the village and what a find. The beer (it is a micro brewery) and food was really great and the staff were really friendly and helpful and went out of there way to ensure everything was ok. The perfect English Pub in a Perfect English setting !!!!!!

2nd review of the White Lion as this time we did eat, we have used this pub fairly frequently for just a drink but this time we had lunch, it was as good as we expected. There are not many reviews of this pub, possibly because it is a bit of the beaten track, part of its charm is the cosy but not crowded environment which could be spoilt if it does get " discovered'!

We ate here on our last night in Suffolk. Very quiet on a wet and windy night but the wood stove was a great welcome. I had the pie and mash. Huge portion with extra gravy provided without having to ask. Loved it! My husband had the fish and chips which also got a big thumbs up. No room for pud unfortunately. This pub is worth searching out.

Walked from Woodbridge along the river to Ufford and had lunch at this delightful pub. The welcome we got was lovely and the menu looked fabulous, something for everyone. Although probably not really needed as it was a lovely day outside there was a wonderful wood burner in the centre of the pub which on a winters day or night would be most welcome. I ate off the menu and my husband ate off the specials and the food was the best pub food we have had for a long long time. We shall definenately return to this wonderful little pub it was well worth the 8 mile round walk and our dog enjoyed it too. We think you have got it just right we found out that you have been at the pub for ten years, we wish you all the very best for the future.

I have only been here on a couple of occasions since I live so far away. The beer was always perfect, each part of the ham, eggs and chips I had was exceptional, the ham was cut from a joint, the chips were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle and the eggs were runny. I can think of few occasions when I have had a better pub lunch. Just wish I lived nearer

We stayed in Ufford for a wedding and, as the reception was being held here on the Saturday, went to check it out on the Friday evening. We got to the pub at 20:40 with the kitchen meant to close at 21:00.We were greeted warmly and our drinks provided promptly. The pub has a great, lively local atmosphere and everyone was chatty and friendly.I ordered the steak pie and this was without doubt the best I've ever tasted (I've tasted a lot of these!) - the meat was extremely tender and the pastry a delight. The meal was very well presented too - shame I was too busy eating to take a photograph.Whilst the pub had a £10 minimum spend rule for paying by card, they happily set up a bar tab for us, so this wasn't a problem. The desserts were equally impressive and the food is very reasonably priced. The owner told me their food is all cooked fresh - they don't use frozen meals like a lot of pubs. It clearly works as the quality of the food was exceptionally high.None of this comments on the wedding reception, where guests were also treated to a very high standard of service and food, but that's not what this review is about.Well done to Steve and Tania for giving us such a positive first impression of the area.

The pub it self is very nice and the beer garden was lovely in the sun.The food was not consistently good and some very poor. The starters were nice but again the chicken was neither crispy or had a smooth texture. The vegetarian option, which was a tart, was very watery and the pastry was hard. The rhubarb crumble was not nice, the rhubarb was dried out and the crumble gooey. The soup, prawn cocktail, steak and cheese board were all nice but nothing amazing. The food did not live up to the nice plates it was served in!! There are a lot better pubs in the area that serve better quality of food.

What an amazing find - this is a true pub through and through! Homecooked and delicious food, a barmy land lady whom we loved, a table purely for locals, log fire, dogs and walking boots allowed, a record player (hope you found Rose Royce...) - absolutely perfect. I will recommend this place to everyone and we will definitely be back......

We have never felt more welcomed in a pub. We visited the white lion twice over the Christmas period. Once was just not enough. The pub offers a selection of their own brewed ales, these are great pints and even the misses enjoyed the lighter one. The food is much better than typical pub grub and we were not disappointed on either visit. All fresh cooked local produce giving this place the edge. The landlord and landlady were great fun - really friendly and welcoming - we felt like locals! We cannot recommend this place enough.

The friendly welcome warmed a rainy day in this small pub, not least from the aimiable pub dog. Locals wandered in and out of the two traditional but comfortable rooms, some visiting for a drink and pub table games, some to eat.The landlady was relaxed about us sharing a main-course scampi as a starter, then locally sourced rare-breed sausage egg and chips were exceptional, and the fish and chips excellent.. My curry was dull, the papadums did not taste of anything - probably a bad choice of mine in a local pub and I think at busier times of year there is a wider menu. My companions spoke very highly of the local beer on tap.In better weather it looked as if there was plenty of outside seating and barbecue food and the pub also had a shop. You will not find this delightful place by accident, but it is well worth seeking out for the character, welcome and locally sourced traditional food and drink.

This is our local and we're regulars so I'll admit we're biased. But this really is a cracking place to eat and drinkThe pub is very small, with only about 9 tables, so you get a real homely feel. They brew their own beers, but also have a good selection of other drinks. Lunch and dinner menu is varied but all delicious (we've tried nearly all of the menu and there is lots to choose from). All the food is homemade in the kitchen. The landlord is originally a chef so you get the homemade feel in the menu, with a touch of sophistication! I'd really recommend this for locals or tourists. If you're on holiday in Suffolk and want to visit a real country pub then this is the one. There is a fire to sit round in the winter or sit outside and soak up the sun in the summer. Go down, have a drink and eat well. If you're still there after about 10pm, you'll probably end up with the landlord and landlady sitting on your table chewing the fat.

Popped along for food whilst staying at Ufford Park Hotel. This is a family run pub, very quaint, small (ish) and very traditional - but ever so slightly modern feel as well. There are casks of real ale on the bar (excellent), lagers, ciders and wine. But it's a simple pub with superb home-cooked food. The welcome was lovely. The landlord has a chat with you and we'd definitely go there again. Don't eat at Ufford. Eat here. It's 0.5 miles away from Ufford. Get a taxi there so you can sup to your hearts content.

Every now and then my husband and I go away, just for one night, to spend some quality time with each other away from family worries and work. We don't tend to go far as my father has dementia and I'm his medical contact should he fall ill. We chose The Cherry Tree in Woodbridge for our trip this time and arrived to find a beer festival was in progress and a band was setting up. Not the type of break we had expected, but what a great evening we had. The staff were lovely, the beer was amazing and the food... the best homemade steak burger I've ever had, and my husband was impressed with the think slices of ham, egg and chips he had. The menu was extensive, and we could of had anything from curries and steaks to jacket potatoes and fully loaded sandwiches, there was something for every taste and full children's menu board too. As for accommodation, this was in a building across from the beer garden. We had the loft apartment (above the other two rooms available). A spacious, clean, comfortable room with everything you would expect from a B&B (tea/coffee, TV, bathroom towels, shampoo and body wash), ensuite bathroom with over bath shower and an exceptionally comfortable king sized bed... we slept very well. Breakfast (served between 9 and 11am on Sundays) was from a list of at least 10 items, with batista style beverages. We enjoyed the Full English breakfast, it was delicious and extremely filling. To answer the usual TA questions, yes dogs were allowed, yes there is off road parking, yes a play area for children and yes we will probably go back again in the future. Surrounding area... Notcutts garden centre across the road, historic Woodbridge is well worth a look, fabulous walk along the river (takes approx 2 hours loop walk) and Ufford Park Golf and leisure just up the road through Melton (amazing Spa facilities) Happy travels x

Food was excellent and we particularly liked the possibility of having adult small portions for some meals. Wide menu and plenty of choice of drinks. Proper tasty home cooked food. Eaten here 3 times during our weeks stay in the area. The downside is the road from Debenham to Cretingham - it’s very narrow but nowt Yorkshire folk can’t handle. Although my hubby was a bit disgruntled that you only served Roast Pork as a roast on a Sunday lunch and no Yorkshire Puds - he’s a Beef and Yorkshire Pud chap!! the food has been exceptionally tasty and the staff amazingly friendly. Highly recommend a visit

First time back in here since new management. It's safe to say The White Horse is back!! Fully stocked bar, good choice of beers, very welcoming host. It has only been back open a month, so they have started with a small menu to get started and it did not disappoint. Absolutely delicious food and served promptly. They have just taken on a second chef and are aiming to expand their menu shortly. Will definitely be back! Oh and their Christmas Dinner Menu looks delicious and very reasonabley priced.
