Golden Curry in Thanet

Sadly, this is the last time we will be using them. Had many great meals over the years but the service is getting worse and so is the food. Waited 2 hours for a delivery last night. Ali said the delivery driver had not turned up. In the end his wife delivered it. When we got it, it was cold. The standard of food has also gone downhill. I ordered a chicken ceylon. What I got was just flavourless stew, the chicken pacora was salty and the poppadoms were not crisp. Such a shame.

Food want to bad but don’t go if your in a hurry it takes ages for the food to come out booked a table for 9 and didn’t get mains until gone 11 the waiter was ok to be fair though

One star rating is being generous. Avoid this restaurant. We waited nearly 1.5 hours for our food and we were the only customers in the restaurant! At least give your customers some poppadoms whilst they're waiting! Might have taken the edge of the waiting time and the fact we were getting very hungry. Dirty glass and plate. Plates also stained with curry. Flat Lemonade. Food item missing. Wrong item arrived to be told by waiter he didn't cook it - but he took the order! Burnt naan bread that arrived long enough after the food to make a difference to the meal. Restaurant owner/cook VERY old which could attribute to the waiting time. Told he's owned the restaurant since 1978 and it showed from the old outdated and somewhat dilapidated appearance. Definitely not worth it! Zero atmosphere. Felt like going back in time, even the music was outdated. Poor experience.

Ordered a takaway last night (29th may) at 6 pm to pick up at 6.45,got there at 6.40,the chef was cooking a takeaway for a very large group,and the taxi driver who was waiting to deliver it,told me i would have to wait for my order,and wait i had to,finally got it at 7.40. Took it home for my wife and i,it was awful,rice cold,bhajis dripping with oil,peshwari naan,massively undercooked,it was not eatable,my wife always has the meat dhansak,she said it was ok,but the worst she has ever had from here,I had the special Korai and the chicken in it was horrendously overcooked and very very dry,think that it was all rushed,I ate very little of mine,and my wife left quite a lot of hers also. been using this place for over 40 years,but wont be back. Myself and partner ordered from here.. we were provided with green chicken and a very unsympathetic person on reception who refused to even reimburse us. If you don’t want to live anymore I reccomend eating here

Great lamb phaal, good service, friendly!!!

One star rating is even too high! Tried for the first time from here and definitely won’t be using again! Two hour wait for delivery and had to chase it up. Food arrived cold and items missing that were ordered! Food was definitely not worth waiting for and prices on menu were different to what we were charged!! Very over priced for quality of food. This is probably the worst Indian I have ever had!! Ordered at 6pm to be told it would take an hour!! 25 passed 8pm I chased it up. 10 to 8pm it finally arrived. Cold and items missing!! TOTALLY OVER PRICED WAS TOLD THE OWNER WAS OLD AND HASNT CHANGED THE PRICES BECAUSE HE WAS OLD!!! Worked out prices from online menu £55.60 when delivered £74 !!!

Nice curry, I had a chicken dish and my husband a lamb, both very nice and the service was on point.

Over 2 hours for delivery to arrive. Vile. Disgusting slop. Worst indian meal ever in our lifes. Disgraceful to take peoples money then give them prison food. Every single dish was disgusting. They even managed to ruin the papadoms.

We went as a large group - they were understaffed and struggled with the volume of orders. It was a frankly bizarre evening but in a so bad it’s funny kind of way. The drinks and food came out late - very late - we sat down at 7pm and didn’t get food until gone 9pm. We were starving! It all came out together on a trolly. Majority of it was cold at this point and he had no idea what was what. I ordered a vegetable korma and found a piece of chicken in it (I spat it out and didn’t eat anything else). My friend is vegan and there was butter in hers. Service was slow, waiter kept calling us m’lady and when we eventually went to pay he said we had to pay on one card or pay cash. Which was just a tad chaotic with everyone trying to figure out what they ate and someone had to volunteer to pay the lump sum. The food was actually reasonably good, but it wasn’t hot and with all the rice and meat we were all worried that we would be poorly afterwards. Thankfully we were fine but I wouldn’t go here if you have any kind of dietary requirements and don’t go as a group!

The restaurant was freezing cold, service took forever. We left with no food after an hour and a half as we were so cold and needed warmth!

A nice local curry house, food was tasty but a bit cold. Service was good, but slow.

Been reluctant to give this review. This is the longest established, same owner and head chef, same stylised decor and same best Indian food in Margate. It’s actually Cliftonville - the secret cool bit of town. This restaurant makes this area cool. And if you don’t recognise the lifetime achievements of the owner/chef, the family and the dedicated team who make this great - you’re sadly going to be influenced by the latest passing fad and miss this gem. And I hope you do - don’t want the secret out 😎

DO NOT ORDER TAKE AWAY OVER THE PHONE. THEY TAKE YOUR CARD DETAILS AND USE THEM TO BUY SUBSCRIPTIONS ON APPLE DEVICES. Luckily my bank were vigilant and blocked most (not all) of these transactions.

First time finding this little gem absolutely lovely food and great service. Will come again

Years ago when I first visited Margate, I came across a hidden gem Indian restaurant upon arriving late at night, and I’ve been dreaming about those flavours ever since. 5 years later I finally made it back here and pin this restaurant down. The chef is an old guy who has been cooking in that kitchen for decades. The waiter has been working there for more than ten years. Just like us, sometimes things don’t go as planned and they get distracted. But that is okay. We could all be a bit more forgiving. (If you’re in a hurry, I’d suggest to order ahead and collect at a set time. ) I will not hesitate to recommend this restaurant, and will definitely go back when I next visit Margate.

Very pleasant experience, server attentive but not over bearing, we ordered lamb korma with pilau rice which was absolutely delicious and worth the money, will definitely return 😊 Only criticism is the decor is a bit tired , but dont let this distract you from this gem.

How anyone can give this restaurant a negative review is beyond me. The food is excellent and fresh ingredients seem to be used throughout. Service by very professional waiters is a welcome relief, especially in Margate. Prices seem to represent exceptional value, particularly these days. The crisp white linen tablecloths are a joy and the fact the chefs wear spotless whites is also a reassuring factor. The only negative for this restaurant is the naff name, I’m convinced if it was renamed with a contemporary title people would be rushing through the door. Go see for yourself.

The restaurant was nice, clean & staff friendly but the food was not very good, decent size portions but very bland, did not taste like curry at all.

Waited about 35mins to get r food!! And we got a pice of stone from the Curry!! The biriyani was not too bad but only small quantity for that price!! Not gunna recommend to anyone!!

Absolutely love the gold curry. The main cook is a diamond. Flavour we spit on, huge chunks of chicken. I always order the chicken dahnsak, no matter where I eat and the golden curry is spot on, no where does it better! I’ve tried a few different curries from here and they’re all banging, the naan and onion bahjis are perfect too! Highly recommend great food for a great price!

Ordered at 745 OK Saturday night, but told 30 to 45 mins, great, 2 hours and still waiting???? Phoned and on it way, still waiting, we've Ordered pizza.

Terrible service 1 .5 hours wait just for a starter i lost the will to live

This is the worst food I have ever had Only 3 customers in there . Took 10 mins to get a lemonade.20 Mins to get a coffee . Starter took over a hour to come my wife and I left half of it not nice at all . Then waited for the main another 30 mins to come In between the starter my wife ordered another lemonade which never came By this time I lost the will to live naan Bread was terrible burnt Food was gross . All this with only 3 customers in there hate to Think what it would be with a full house Don’t even bother Going there was a joke

Service slow and unpleasant. Decor unpleasant. Toilets disgusting. Food very salty and greasy. Overcharged on food and shifty waiter quickly took away the bill. Avoid.

Really love this place. Some of the best Indian food I ever had and I still think about it all the time even though it's been years since I last ate there

We have been going here for years, the best curry house in Thanet, ok so the service can be a little bit slow on occasions but the food is unbelievable you must try this place

We have dined at the Golden Curry in Margate frequently over the years The last two occasions were a disaster, when I ordered the takeaway for last night, I requested that the chicken not to be overcooked!! The chicken was again very dry, the grease oozed out of the meat. All of the containers were flooded with oil. There was a strong foul smell from the rice. The nan was overcooked and tasteless. Basically inedible. Three of us not feeling to good this morning. Suffice to say I shall not go back.

Every time I've ordered a delivery 4 times to be precise. I asked where my missing orders were and was told by Ali that I was lying . I told the owner that when he's ready to apologise to a regular customer , that I will be waiting. Instead 40 mins later the manager ( Ali ) sends out the rest of my order . The man has no respect for his customer service. And has now lost a regular from 20 years.

We have been to this restaurant for a long time over the years but over the last couple the food as gone down.just had a dinner tonight with my daughter and her partner and had to throw most off it away the chicken was like rubber and the lamb tikka was so fatty could not eat. and did not get what I ordered very disappointed i won't be going ever again might as well chucked my money down the toilet

Food OK but after waiting an hour and then only 2 out of 3 plates of food arrived. Chef forgot about 3rd persons food. Another 20 mins later 3rd dish appeared by which point I had sent 1st 2 plates back and I refused to pay. Chef wasn't happy and aggressively said to me, if I was a man he would he would punch me in the face. Appauling service and disgusting and threatening behaviour.

Food was delicious with big portion sizes and customer service was lovely! The waitress serving was very helpful with recommending dishes and looking after us. Would definitely recommend here again!

Seeing 4.4, we had high hopes but was left extremely disappointed. One poor old guy taking orders and cooking all the food; should have been the first sign to just leave, but again we were hopeful other staff members would turn up as it was 5:30ish almost 6pm on a Saturday. The food wait was long as he was doing it alone, which we accepted and understood…staff started turning up at 6:10pm which made very little difference. One guy couldn’t even put a plate of salad together to ease the pressure on the one chef dealing with all the orders so had a 5-10 minute wait just for a bit of lettuce, slices of tomatoes and lemon. When the food did eventually come out, the jalfrezi was quite clearly burnt and my sister found a hair in her food. Thankfully they didn’t charge for one biryani, but paid for the meal and ended up popping over to the shop opposite for more food as no one left satisfied with the “meal” we had at The Golden Curry.

I mean, first of all, the food was good, when it eventually arrived. There was a group of 4 people waiting before we arrived, for a reservation, around 9:15pm... The waitress, who seemed lovely but inebriated, took our order fairly promptly, and then it was LITERALLY about an hour and a half before we got our order. There's one elderly man who cooks, no matter how many people there are. When the food arrived, he barely knew what was what, so people got the wrong dishes. None of us minded that much, but it was SO slow and confusing. If he trains someone to work with him, it'll be a good restaurant.

Hidden gem of Margate. The meal deal for one is such good value for money . The food is excellent and they’ve been going since the 70’s so says it all . I’ll always eat here when I’m visiting the town 😁

Went with my granddaughter on 28th May while visiting Cliftonville. Had booked a table. Upon arrival the lovely waitress had decorated our table with dove and hearts confetti. She was so friendly and helpful. Food was delicious, we were choosy and they catered to us very well.

My girlfriend and I walked through the door moments before the kitchen closed, and they kept the kitchen open for us. The food was delicious and was prepared speedily. Thank-you for the special experience.

This restaurant is disgusting! The food was awful, very dry. We had drinks that didn’t taste right, we didn’t enjoy our meal at all. When we complained there was 2 others in there that also had mouldy milk served to them for their coffee!! When we decided to say something, the manager was very rude and started shouting, didn’t handle it very well at all. This is not okay. All 4 of us the next morning were really ill…

We had lamb bhuna(big chunks of lamb), rice, saag aloo, aloo gobi and poppadoms with dips.. we put 3 people on it n it fed us all. Quality and quantity. Superb service, quality food. Bookmarked for next time. Thanks peeps. Food was amazing

Wasn't impressed about the Golden Curry Restaurant, firstly the waitress didn't know much about the food they sell, was a young white girl. The waiting time was really bad, 45 minutes for the starter, then another 30 minutes for the main course. The food was just okay nothing special, the portions were large and the prices were reasonable.

I am very unhappy, on your website is specifically says that you open from 6-11, I phoned at 10:08 and was at the restaurant for 10:10 but you was closed. I don’t appreciate you making false advertisement. If you could please correct your times that would be great. Maybe in the future I might decide to try again but as of now I am very disappointed.

This resturant is a lovley place to have a meal and theres a great eat in only £15.95, never disappointed.

We’ve been coming here for years for birthday etc and I also order delivery. It was my 5 years anniversary with my partner so we went to have dinner here. Not a good experience, first of all there were teenagers servicing which is fine and they were nice and lovely but they don’t know much on which food is which and can chat unprofessionally. We waited ages for the popadoms and starters (the servers did apologise and obviously isn’t their fault) but I had a mouldy lemon on my starter and the lemon in my drink was dirty. We finally got our mains like almost 1hour 30mins later and the chicken wasn’t the best and the garlic naans were still raw and we sent them back. We did get that refunded but overall just a bad experience which is disappointing because this used to be the best curry place!! Just getting worse and worse :(

Lamb Bombay Curry and Nan Bread at £9.45. Service as usual was polite and fast, and it was more than I could eat. Lamb chunks were soft, not at all chewy, and the potato was soft enough to break with my fork.

I always have a soft spot for the Golden Curry. I grew up in Margate and the first time I ever tasted Indian food was at the Golden Curry way back in the 80s when I had my first ever Chicken Korma! I lived just over the road from it in Clifton Gardens. The owner Ali is a really nice , genuine sort of guy and it's good to see that his restaurant is still going strong. I've eaten there a number of times over the last few years and always enjoyed our meals. The prices are always very reasonable too. Lovely food and great memories too of some lovely evenings spent at the Golden Curry!

Busy early evening with numerous tables full. Lamb Bombay was a tasty main course. Large chunks of soft lamb, lean and well cooked, combined with potato. Flavoured just right, lots of sauce as I like. Accompanied with a Garlic Nan, well presented, cooked just right. Sensible price at less than £10, and served politely and fast from the kitchen.

Words can simply not describe how terrible this place is. Nothing went right from start to finish. Glasses Were dirty, plates looked like they have been washed with my dogs bed sheet. They obviously have a smoke machine in the kitchen because everytime they opened the door it looked like Freddy Mercury Was going to appear. We spoke to several tables who had similar experiences and were all laughing about the place because it had gone beyond the point of disappointing and simply became quite funny. When the food came it was cold and all had a layer of skin over it. We didn’t touch half of it because (sorry to go back to the dog metaphor) it looked like my dog had done his business on the plate. The only reason I would consider going back would be for a joke and would only eat the poppadoms. Going to be having nightmares about this place tonight and will be a funny story in my locker everytime I go for a curry

Lamb and Potato Curry with a Garlic Nan Bread. Huge curry portion, Lamb was tender and lean, the Garlic Nan was fresh and soft. £8.40, excellent value, served in under ten minutes, and they accept cards for payment.

Been ordering from golden curry for years now. Even after moving out the area I’d drive to collect it 😍 now they deliver to ramsgate for a little extra! 10/10

Was really good food served here and had a nice ambient feel to the evening. What made it shy of 5stars was the smoke alarm that was set off for around 10mins on and off.

£8.40 for a Bombay Lamb and Potato Curry and Garlic Nan Bread. Large size portion of meat, well cooked, Nan was good, and all served within 10 minutes of ordering.

Bombay Land and Potato Curry and Nan Bread at £9.40. A huge portion,meat was tender and lean,sauce tasty and plentiful,and the nan donelight and fluffy. Service was friendly and fast,this place is back to its best.

I had the best Indian take away last night. All freshly cooked and nice size portions. Polite service too. I will most definitely be returning and will look forward to dining in when it reopens

My partner called them at 6.30 to see if we could get a table surprisingly we were able to get one which made me think it can't be any good....... How wrong was I we were met at the door by a polite young waiter who showed us to our table, although he was on his own he served us all very well and the food oh my...... It was amazing, can honestly say best Indian I have had for years and the portion sizes were huge wr had to apologize for leaving so much as the portions where we are from are a lot smaller...any thanks for a fantastic meal. Gave this rating just because customer service is utterly appalling! 3 hours for delivery once and kept lying saying was on way....went to collect and was kept waiting in restaurant for over an hour.. all this for food which is acceptable at best....Ali Raj in Westbrook much better...

Our party of five had a booking for the end of December. Although the restaurant opens at 6 pm, we were told the earliest we could book for was 6.30 pm. On arrival the restaurant was cold and the waiter, a very pleasant young man (schoolboy actually!), greeted us and gave us a choice of table. It took some while to place orders and the waiter insisted on doing drinks before taking the food order, increasing the delay no doubt. When the food did arrive there was confusion over which was what. A very scruffy guy appeared from the kitchen who helped sort things out. The waiter was clearly not well trained, he started clearing plates while some of us were still eating, stretching in front of us. Portions were too large, four of the five of us taking some home. The meal didn't end with the customary orange segments or mints. The slow service and confusion means we will probably not use this establishment again.

Love the quality portion size and taste. Never had a complaint against this place always friendly and welcoming to me and my family. Delivery driver and rottweiler companion were also polite and friendly THUMBS UP!!

Need of new decor, flooring too. Staff is friendly. Chief needs a uniform , hat. Food is 7/10 it's not always the same . Owner has an attitude. Be nice.
