13.20, Tuesday July 30th. Stopped for family lunch. No reservation. (None required. It was very quiet.) I’ve experienced a wide range of service and politeness during our trip around the UK, but only one time has the greeting been so insolent and disrespectful that we literally turned on our heals and left. A man in an Iron Maiden t-shirt stared at us as we entered the pub. As he moved behind the bar I realized he was an employee. I said “Good afternoon” and he stared down at his wrist watch for a few seconds and eventually looked up and said “Yes” (as if to confirm that I was right to designate the time as “afternoon”). He looked like he was fresh from a medieval role play weekend with a little borrowed overconfidence lingering yet. I asked “Is it a good afternoon?” And he grumbled “I’ve been scrubbing floors all morning” - clearly he had peaked in life. I asked if they were serving food and he pointed nonchalantly at a table in the corner “Well, they’ve got cheese toasties.” A simple yes or no would’ve been sufficient, as would have a modicum of common courtesy. This man is an utter discredit to the establishment and life is just too short to tolerate such a poor attitude from service staff. He needs to be reminded that he is not on Reddit and actually dealing with real people in the real world. Someone needs an attitude adjustment, or a new “career”.

Really nice pub grub with homemade chips rather than the usual frozen ones from pubs. It was quiet on a Tuesday night and service was very quick.

We have just moved to Herefordshire and we visited this pub because my parents were staying with us for a small holiday. Well, what a lovely pub and a delicious meal had by all! Such a clean and friendly pub. Thank you to our server, Ellie, who was helpful, kind, and welcoming.

Went on my own for food and a drink in the garden. A really lovely pub, great outdoor area and the food was perfect. Lovely service from the bar staff - the other photos on here don’t do it justice - I recommend the steak!

We did an overnight pub stop at this friendly pub in our campervan. Good beer, very good food and friendly, welcoming staff and locals. My hubby said the Butlers cut steak he ordered was in his top ten best steak ever!!! We are very satisfied and appreciate being allowed to park over night in our camper for free. Thanks so much 😊

There were 12 of us for Christmas Day lunch. Excellent 3 course meal, which we all enjoyed. Lovely atmosphere and staff were great. We couldn’t have asked for more.

We were served by a really nice chap. We both had a burger and chips, the burgers were really quite nice but the chips, absolutely dreadful, they had been reheated, dry and tasteless. If it had not been a takeaway I would have sent them back.

It was ok, will be back. the barmaid today was ignorant and obnoxious i asked for a smaller head 2 week's ago, now I'm getting ignored, then my change is put on the bar, I've not got a problem with moods, it's my local! Am I now going to have to go to town for a drink?

Just had the most amazing steak at this place. Myself and gorgeous wife was staying at the granary 2.5 miles away and tried to get a meal around here (Hereford) cant believe how many places didnt serve food or was out of food on a SATURDAY! the golden cross inn gave us both one of the best meals we have had in a long time. We do many cruises each year and the food on those ships, I dont think any one can touch, but this pubs meal was one of the best. The Chef is worth his weight in gold. We did ask the barmaid to let him know how happy we both was with the food, the quality and value for money was great. A local village pub at its best. Well done and thank you. Doug Jones

Good food and a friendly atmosphere

Possibly the most friendly ‘random local’ I’ve had the pleasure to frequent. The staff and the locals are super friendly and helpful, and the beer and food is well kept/presented and fantastic value for money. I shall one day return. And the comedy noise that comes off one of the beer engines never failed to make me chuckle.🤣

A bit out of the way but a good pint of butty

Welcome was great, lovely pub, nice staff. Food menu gave good options and the all tasty. I had the hill Billy burger. Really nice. Well presented. Simple country pub food. Enjoyed with some nice pints of lager, a game of pool with step daughter. Will see you guys again soon

Friendly staff, friendly locals and a great pint.

Called by yesterday for a meal at 5 past 2 after dropping daughters off at chase Distillery. It was the nearest advertising open from midday. On arrival we found a sign saying closed at 2 due to staff shortages. This was confirmed by a gentleman sat outside in a chefs uniform. We went in had a coffee, a glass of coke and 2 bags of crisps and left about 3 only to see the 'chef' still sat outside. After travelling from the Forest of Dean in hope of having a meal. Ver disappointed as I had checked the website before leaving home in case of any changes. 2stars was for the cold coke and not too bad cup of coffee.

Played pool here last week. I've not visited this pub before, but it seems a very nice place. The food looks great, the staff are very pleasant also. Haven't tried the beer as I was driving. It's definitely a pub worth visiting. 👍👍

Decent atmosphere, but the ale is a bit warm/off

After eating regularly here for the last year, had such a disappointing meal on Saturday evening. Had specifically chosen this pub to take visiting family members to based on past experience and wanting to support a local business. Table staff seemed uninterested in making it a pleasant experience from the off. I had ordered the beef stroganoff. When this arrived at the table, it had been served with chips. My aunt questioned this as we both thought the menu stated rice. We were briskly told by the staff that she didn't think it specified in the menu that it came with rice, and that it was a choice of chips or rice. IF there had been a choice, I certainly wasn't asked my preference when our order was taken. This was then followed by a very unfriendly "Is that a problem?" Since the rest of my party had their food, and due to the tone of voice used, I begrudgingly ate my stroganoff with the chips. I'll never know what a timbale of rice is! Repeat drink orders were slow and arrived bit by bit. When I had rung up to make the booking, I asked whether I would be able to use a gourmet society card, and was instantly told "yes". However, when I went to pay and presented my gourmet card, was informed that I couldn't use it. I said I had been told I could use it. "We found out yesterday that it can't be used on a Saturday" I was told. Nobody had contacted me on the phone number I had left at the time of booking, nor when we arrived. Again, no apology and when another member of staff enquired what the problem was, was shut down by the main staff member. I paid the bill and left. When I got home, I checked through the bill again and found to my dismay that the scoops of plain ice cream that my 2 children had ordered had been charged at £5!!!! The same price as a full pudding served with scoops of ice cream! That was the final straw. Will not go back again.

Stayed overnight in our 6m Campervan had a nice meal & good night's sleep, limited space for parking but managed to find a spot.

Nice place, went for a darts match, found the beer a little more than I expected but hey, what's not going up at the moment,

Visited last night, cold empty experience, food barely warm, noise herendous could not hear one another talk due to loud mouthed lads playing pool. We were never asked was the food ok or even after would we like desert. The whole experience was dreadful.

Had two lovely Sunday lunches would definitely recommend this place

Nice looking pub shocking service shocking food, starter came out with mains, mixed grill terrible steak over cooked chicken dry black pudding had bad smell, mushrooms really chewy in stroganoff. Give it wide berth folks.

Came here for our dinner whilst on holiday. Brought our dogs and sat downstairs. Food was nice and tasty and beer was nice. Of all the pubs we visited this holiday this one seemed a bit soulless and lacking character. Can’t put my finger on it as food and drink was fine and the lady who served us was good. Possibly due to fact as we walked in had snide comments from locals, so maybe this tainted it for us.

A gem of a pub. We stopped here as a family for Sunday dinner. 4 empty plates was an achievement with our kids! Friendly staff, stunning food and an immaculately kept pub. What more could you want.

Tuesday lunchtime was a good time to visit. The food was excellent and the few locals were friendly and welcoming. More than happy to return next time I'm in the area.

This is a small country pub with a big heart. The Landlord was welcoming and knowledgeable. The fair was comprehensive and delicious. The range of ales was great all sourced locally. Attention to detail was everything. I order 3 coffees and a Tea at the end of our visit and suggested I would like a mug for the Tea. I got a massive cup and saucer and 2 little pots to fill it. It’s those things that make a visit memorable. Go and enjoy. Booking is advisable.

Great meals. Standard have not slipped over lock down. Cock and Bull and Beef Stroganoff eaten and enjoyed.

picnic box, [ for 2 ] to take out, excellent, will be having another one this week. good variety fresh roll, cheese, ham, pickle, salad, sausage roll, drink, 4 cakes, £ 6.00 for two can't go wrong !!

Lovely country pub with great food , has an upstairs restaurant and some dining downstairs, great for playing pool or darts , drinks are reasonably priced.

Reasonably priced though portion of meat felt a little small. Think would 'go large' next time. Everything was cooked nicely though, and the roast potatoes in particular were excellent. Nice selection of vegetables. Apple pie was nice though the custard (which was clearly fresh and homemade) seemed like the sugar had been forgotten. Service, by young girls, was friendly and they were eager to please.

Popped in here shortly after it opened at midday. Food didn't take too long and was really really nice. Also excellent value and the kids portions are huge! Was unsure whether or not they did food and so had to check their website and when I saw that they did we decided to give it a go and were glad that we did. They also do a senior citizens deal during the week which looks good value. Not sure how busy they get but it was quiet when we visited (although as mentioned it had only just opened) but I'd highly recommend to anyone.

We went there with a small group of friends for lunch. The menu was very varied with things to suit all tastes and appetites. There was a large range of full meals (which were very generous) alongside light bites, salads and children's meals. My husband had the surf and turf, which was excellent and all the reviews about the chips were not wrong - they were wonderful as was my salad. All the food was freshly cooked so there us a bit of a wait - but well worth it. The service was very good, the lady behind the bar was excellent and made us feel very welcome and valued. We will definitely go there again.

Me and my boyfriend were looking for somewhere to eat on a Sunday evening and this seemed to be the only place open and serving food in the area. We weren't disappointed at all, first rate service and the food was plentiful and excellent quality. Great value for money too. The waitress in the restaurant upstairs was lovely and friendly, will definitely be coming again!

Homemade 6oz burger, homemade chips and coleslaw with a pint and the cricket on the TV 📺. Marvellous.

Lovely afternoon/evening here. First time coming in to this place. Me and my partner had a couple of drinks and then we had food in the restaurant upstairs and the food was top class and greatly priced. We shall deffo be returning soon with a bigger crowd. The var staff were very nice and friendly. Great local.

We went last night 17th April.What a lovely place,such a friendly atmosphere & the food was amazing.We will certainly be back.We were using our merecat offer of two for one such an amazing deal,we were a party of four.The Steaks were fantastic & we certainly didn't need any side orders,I usually clear my plate at other restaurants but admit I didn't quite clear my plate,I was stuffed.I did manage a fabulous sticky toffee pudding though.Very reasonable prices throughout the whole menu for such quality food.

My gf and I arrived back in the area late evening and had nothing to eat and this pub was conveniently located close by. Nice traditional food and you won't leave hungry. Great value.

This is a hidden gem just outside Hereford. Has great bands with a good sound and is well run. Good size for all interest.

Booked this restaurant as we had Meerkat Meals deal and wanted to try an independent place rather than one of the large chains.We were visiting Hereford for the weekend. It is in a small village,which our Sat nav decided to navigate a very long,convoluted route,so we just used a map to get back to Hereford,much quicker. On entering the bar,downstairs,as someone else commented,it resembled a youth club,although we would add,there was a slight hint of the set of “Deliverance”! It is not a cosy,country pub! We were asked if we wanted to eat in the bar or upstairs in the restaurant,which was a far better option. The restaurant has several wooden tables,very little decor and brightly lit, which was slightly off putting. However, our reservations were ill founded,as the waitress was lovely.She was attentive,friendly and worked really hard,explaining the menu to us. We both had the “Cock and Bull”, consisting of strips of char grilled chicken and steak,with fabulous chips and a salad garnish. Even without our discount,the prices were far more reasonable and quality far superior to The Beefeater we had visited the previous evening. Well worth a visit,appearances can be deceptive!

The food was excellent, prompt and friendly service and amazingly good value for over 60's and others as well

Really happy with the food and service. We were a table of 9 and all food was served together, hot and was super tasty. We had three children at our table, their food came out on cold plates and they were served first! affording us plenty of time to get them ready before our food came out... We all really enjoyed it. And all in all a very good place to get some food and a nice atmosphere.

Food was very good and cooker fresh, but it was quite cold when I took my coat off. Next time I will layer up

Visited this pub with two other family members for a meal& it was live music night.Have to say the music was by far the hottest & best.All meals came on cold plates, food was cold &standard & presentation very poor.Definately won’t eat there again, may visit if a goodband were playing.

Wild Mushroom Stroganoff... It will fill you up and there will be some to takeaway! Great tucked away place.

Nice pub, very pleasant, great food, I love my steak and it was a good cut, very tasty and it was nice to see exactly as it was described on the menu, bursting with flavour..I agree. Very charming and chatty staff, a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Will definitely visit again.

Quiet pub but always a favourite to meet my mate

Two of us went for Sunday lunch, there's an option to upgrade to large which I asked to do, twice actually, and still got a standard dinner, when I asked if it was large I had the reply " no it's not sorry" no offer to take it back for me and get the one I asked for? Two tiny bowls of basic veg barely enough for one person let alone two, no veg gravy offered for the vegetarian option, desserts microwaved to death, staff barely knew the menu themselves, and struggle to get a please or thank you out of them also, terrible and will not return.
