Visited twice during festival. Despite being very busy, service was great. My wife and with friends had various meals, each of which was perfect. Not a word to use lightly. Finally we all tried the fresh made cakes. Eleven out of ten. We have booked festival tickets for next year but have agreed that we will eat at Gods Providence every day. It enhanced our stay

Each time I come to the Isle of Wight Festival I have visited this establishment. From my very first visit I have returned, because of the friendly staff and the delicious, quality food. They also catered to my small adaptations to their menu, much appreciated on my part. An excellent establishment to which I will be glad to return too. 10/10

I cannot agree with the previous review. We have been visiting this lovely place for the last few years and are regulars. The food & drinks are great and the staff so very friendly. I am sure if you would of asked for a table away from other people/dogs they would of happily provided it for you. Yes the toiets are upstairs but this building is I think the oldest building in Newport. There are toilets available elsewhere though in Newport. We run a B & B ourselves and now how difficult to please everybody. As they say you can't please all the people all of the time! Best wishes to Robin and his lovely staff who contine serving us with a very happy smile and greeting. Best wishes Caz, Mark & Jamie

Dog friendly cafe in a beautiful old listed building. Acknowledged as soon as we entered and shown to a table. Our dog was given a bowl of water and we were asked if she would like a treat! We both opted for the quiche, Sir had celery and stilton, I had cheese and onion. Both were delicious and tasted of cheese. The coleslaw was excellent, possibly home made, but the icing on the cake was leaf tea. With a cosy on the pot. It is years since we were served leaf tea, even in very up-market establishments. This would have been five stars except the place is a little tired.

We enjoyed a Sunday afternoon meal so much in God's Providence House, that we called in the following day. Big mistake ! Whilst our meals were exceptional on Sunday, sadly this was not the case on the following day. Whilst the decor was of course the same and the cafe was clean, and tidy on both days, the attitude of the waitresses, was so different - on Sunday it was lovely relaxed and a helpful word, even though the waitress were very busy. On Monday their attitude was so different, being unhelpful, and particularly disinterested, which was a shame as Sunday was so memorable. It is a very interesting place.

Properly oven cooked with crispy skin. My husband's steak pie was extremely good, high quality steak with proper shortcrust pastry. The setting was lovely, looking out onto the church and square. Really good service, we were so pleased to have gone there for lunch. I highly recommend!

Both my girls and myself had lunch at God's Providence House, during our day trip to Newport, whilst on holiday in the Isle of Wight. A few weeks beforehand, I e-mailed the owner, asking him, if he could put on their famous suet steak pudding on the menu, the day we were due to visit. He contacted me saying, as long as I gave him 48 hours notice, he would add it to his specials board - now that is 5 star customer service. The suet steak pudding, not only tasted as good as it looked - it was the best ever suet steak pudding I have ever had (served with roast potatoes and veg). My girls had ham sandwiches - extra thick succulent ham on thick bread and scones. Every item of food here is made with passion and love, I cannot praise this tearoom and cafe enough, it is outstanding. Their menu is varied and has something for everyone, so if you are in Newport, please call in, you will not be disappointed, they do not get excellent reviews for nothing.

I am a regular visitor to God’s Prov (actually I have been coming here since I was 8, so just over half a century). I am amused, astonished and exasperated in equal measure by some of the reviews posted on this site, so want to give a realistic perspective for potential visitors. This is a ‘one off’ establishment - not unique (you will find others in many other holiday locations) but particular (perhaps peculiar, to some). It is not part of a chain; it is quirky; it does things its own way. Sometimes things work well, sometimes less so. Prices are reasonable but not “bucket shop” but the food is always tasty, well presented and good value for money. All of this needs to be put into the context of an establishment of huge “soul” where everyone pulls together and battles through the outrageous vicissitudes of daily life with good humour, charm, and genuine, decent, honest endeavour. No, it’s not Joe Allen’s but it ain’t McDonalds either. Come here with an open mind and the willingness to see the good in people (customers and staff) and you’ll have a great time. Come here looking for anodyne corporate perfection and you are in the wrong place. Be human, be happy!

We had booked a table to redeem our daughters roast lunch gift from last Christmas delayed due to COVID. Roast pork was the offering and the food was hugely disappointing. A few stringy bits of pork, a morsel of cabbage, chopped suede and a few potatoes and a tiny ration of sliced carrot. Worst of all the food was verging on cold, tepid at best. I know we were receiving the meal at half price but frankly it wasn't worth a quarter of the stated value of £10.95. On the plus side the pot of tea was good and the service friendly though no-one asked if we had enjoyed our meal. Just as well.

We visited this restaurant today with the intention of having lunch. Unfortunately the only available table was in a area surrounded by diners with dogs sitting on their laps barking. Dogs should not be sat at the table with their owners, the idea of eating off plates previously used by these people and their dogs does not bear thinking about. Needless to say we went elsewhere, but this always used to be a such a very good family restaurant it's such a shame. Dogs under the table is one thing dogs up at the table with their owners is another.

Visit this cafe regularly and decided to go for a Sunday roast. It was one of the poorest roasts I’ve ever eaten. The menu said roast pork with all the trimmings - there were no trimmings, eg no apple sauce, no crackling. The gravy was watery and tasteless, I had 3 very thin slivers of meat. I have had fabulous home cooked roasts elsewhere for the same price.

Staff could not be more accommodating and friendly. My husband and I had a sandwich each and shared a mug of chips with a pot of tea for two that seemed to go on forever (in a good way), you got a good sized pot for two and a pot of hot water to top up, fantastic. The sandwiches had generous fillings and the mug of chips was perfect for the two of us. Visited God's Providence House earlier this year with family. It's an old place with history and as such you don't expect to walk into modern surroundings but honestly the establishment felt in need of some TLC. Decor is dark and old-fashioned and everything looked a dirty (carpets, the menu etc on tables). High chairs were so filthy I didn't even use one and I'm quite used to having to wipe them over when out and about. Toilets also in disrepair - the wallpaper in the ladies was peeling, somebody had pulled some of the peeling paper right off and a notice had been put up to say how unhelpful this had been. All a bit strange, why not just take the opportunity to freshen it up? Anyway we ordered - staff were friendly enough - but unfortunately waited a long time for food despite being almost the only people there!! Food was average when it arrived. Served warm and no complaints but certainly nothing special. Felt that prices were a little on the steep side for what was served.

My wife and I popped in here for a drink and a quick bite to eat before exploring our beautiful island. One of the specials was a cup of tea or coffee with a toasted tea cake for £3.75. This proved to be excellent value. The tea cake was beautifully toasted and it came with plenty of butter. The drinks were fine too. Service was friendly and professional. The tea room is quite large with different rooms to eat in and so it didn't feel at all cramped. One of the things I really liked was the layout of the menu. As you read through the choices there was information on the history of the building and how it got it's name. An extra special touch was a paragraph introducing the staff which also thanked them for their hard work and contribution to the success of the business.

However, for the food and service provided it certainly rated a ‘very good’. I did think that the cost was on the expensive side, and had a Tea/Coffee been included it would have been more affordable.

I have been coming here for years whilst visiting the Island. The place may look a little tired, but I think it’s old school decor is part of the charm. It has an amazing history which is well preserved by the owners. Loved the cute hand knitted cakes / tea cosies. Ordered a Ploughman’s which was huge and absolutely delicious- you can tell the produce is fresh and it’s reasonably priced for what you receive. Service is prompt. Overall I can highly recommend and I hope I can visit again for many more years to come.

This is a great 'out of the way' place to stop and have a quick bite to eat or drink, the cafe is set in the grounds of the abbey and there is seating inside and out. A lovely location on any day. There is a small menu of food available. Plus homemade cakes and hot drinks

We enjoyed a visit to the botanical gardens & decided to stop in to their cafe /restaurant for a bite to eat I must say that the views were stunning looking out onto the gardens , we were lucky enough to get a table on the veranda where a local choir were singing & it made our day The food menu is quite limited but there were a nice selection of cakes available & lots of unusual teas too The food we did order was delicious .. but they were small portions for the price ( I must admit it was one our most expensive eats while on the isle of wight!) All in all a great setting to enjoy a cup of tea & drink but maybe wouldn’t go back for food

Fantastic! Welcomed in with a friendly smile, the ladies were lovely at all times. Hot drinks all tasty, served with a cute little biscuit on the side. I had the steak burger, which came in a toasty hot bun, with proper grated cheese on top & between the two burgers that melted beautifully. This was served with chips & salad. It all tasted so good. Highly recommend, we'll be back soon :-)
