I am a regular visitor to God’s Prov (actually I have been coming here since I was 8, so just over half a century). I am amused, astonished and exasperated in equal measure by some of the reviews posted on this site, so want to give a realistic perspective for potential visitors. This is a ‘one off’ establishment - not unique (you will find others in many other holiday locations) but particular (perhaps peculiar, to some). It is not part of a chain; it is quirky; it does things its own way. Sometimes things work well, sometimes less so. Prices are reasonable but not “bucket shop” but the food is always tasty, well presented and good value for money. All of this needs to be put into the context of an establishment of huge “soul” where everyone pulls together and battles through the outrageous vicissitudes of daily life with good humour, charm, and genuine, decent, honest endeavour. No, it’s not Joe Allen’s but it ain’t McDonalds either. Come here with an open mind and the willingness to see the good in people (customers and staff) and you’ll have a great time. Come here looking for anodyne corporate perfection and you are in the wrong place. Be human, be happy!

We had booked a table to redeem our daughters roast lunch gift from last Christmas delayed due to COVID. Roast pork was the offering and the food was hugely disappointing. A few stringy bits of pork, a morsel of cabbage, chopped suede and a few potatoes and a tiny ration of sliced carrot. Worst of all the food was verging on cold, tepid at best. I know we were receiving the meal at half price but frankly it wasn't worth a quarter of the stated value of £10.95. On the plus side the pot of tea was good and the service friendly though no-one asked if we had enjoyed our meal. Just as well.

We called in to this cafe?/restaurant for a drink and a snack lunchtime. Nicely decorated for Christmas this appears to be a house that has been converted int it’s present use but kept in the original rooms, it’s just like eating in someone’s living room. Very novel. I like it.

We visited this restaurant today with the intention of having lunch. Unfortunately the only available table was in a area surrounded by diners with dogs sitting on their laps barking. Dogs should not be sat at the table with their owners, the idea of eating off plates previously used by these people and their dogs does not bear thinking about. Needless to say we went elsewhere, but this always used to be a such a very good family restaurant it's such a shame. Dogs under the table is one thing dogs up at the table with their owners is another.

Visit this cafe regularly and decided to go for a Sunday roast. It was one of the poorest roasts I’ve ever eaten. The menu said roast pork with all the trimmings - there were no trimmings, eg no apple sauce, no crackling. The gravy was watery and tasteless, I had 3 very thin slivers of meat. I have had fabulous home cooked roasts elsewhere for the same price.

Chanced upon this lovely tea shop and we are glad we did. Served very quickly and efficiently. Even your pooch gets their very own water bowl, none of this sharing lark :). Staff could not be more accommodating and friendly. My husband and I had a sandwich each and shared a mug of chips with a pot of tea for two that seemed to go on forever (in a good way), you got a good sized pot for two and a pot of hot water to top up, fantastic. The sandwiches had generous fillings and the mug of chips was perfect for the two of us. We spied a couple having a syrup sponge and custard, it looked to tempting but we were so filled up with sandwich and tea we could not even muster a pudding to share but it did look so tempting.

Visited God's Providence House earlier this year with family. It's an old place with history and as such you don't expect to walk into modern surroundings but honestly the establishment felt in need of some TLC. Decor is dark and old-fashioned and everything looked a dirty (carpets, the menu etc on tables). High chairs were so filthy I didn't even use one and I'm quite used to having to wipe them over when out and about. Toilets also in disrepair - the wallpaper in the ladies was peeling, somebody had pulled some of the peeling paper right off and a notice had been put up to say how unhelpful this had been. All a bit strange, why not just take the opportunity to freshen it up? Anyway we ordered - staff were friendly enough - but unfortunately waited a long time for food despite being almost the only people there!! Food was average when it arrived. Served warm and no complaints but certainly nothing special. Felt that prices were a little on the steep side for what was served.

This proved to be excellent value. The tea cake was beautifully toasted and it came with plenty of butter. The drinks were fine too. Service was friendly and professional. The tea room is quite large with different rooms to eat in and so it didn't feel at all cramped. One of the things I really liked was the layout of the menu. As you read through the choices there was information on the history of the building and how it got it's name. An extra special touch was a paragraph introducing the staff which also thanked them for their hard work and contribution to the success of the business.

My friend and I were on a short visit to Newport on holiday and had been looking for somewhere to have a cream tea for a couple of days, so when we spotted this tea room advertising cream teas and also saw there were seats outside in the sunshine it looked perfect. We went inside and stood in the entrance hall next to where the cakes were and could see a couple of plates with scones/jam etc in the fridge. A lady in the kitchen area looked out and saw us but completely ignored us. After another couple of minutes we noticed a sign saying there was table service and to take a seat so, thinking maybe that was why no one was acknowledging us, we went outside and sat down. After at least another 5 minutes of waiting my friend decided to go inside again, she returned very quickly saying she had asked to order a cream tea and the waitress' response was "we've run out of cream" and then laughed! No apology, no explanation of an alternative or offer to go to the Co Op two minutes up the road to buy some cream. Needless to say, we took our custom elsewhere, which we were very disappointed about, especially seeing the other good reviews on here. I am therefore only able to comment on the lack of customer service, and not the quality of the food or drinks.

Really needed a cup of tea when we got off a coach as we were cold. A decent pot of tea with baggy cosy and jug of hot water. £3.90 seems a lot for pot of tea guess we just blame overheads. Loos up a steep flight of stairs so beware if you have walking difficulties.

The food was ok, the service was acceptable. I thought the prices were expensive for the experience. a bit mundane.

We found this coffee shop purely by chance, it is next to Newport Minster. Very olde worldly with different rooms off the entrance area. Our coffee and cake were very good and the staff were attentive. Defiantly worth seeking out.

Interesting building, good range of fruit teas, almost spoilt for choice! Scones warm and straight out of the oven, absolutely delicious.

Lovely building, staff very nice and mostly the food is delicious. Sadly my macaroni cheese was not the best as the sauce had split but the staff were lovely ,offered a fresh meal which I declined as I had eaten the salad , delicious fresh bread and part of the macaroni. When we came to pay they only charged us for one meal. I would defiantly return .

This is the sort of place you simply don't get any more on the mainland. It's like stepping back into the 1950's in a wholly positive way. Real leaf tea with a strainer, made fresh in a pot; home made cakes; fresh salads and pies and polite and helpful staff who have time to talk as well as take orders. The building alone is worth a visit, a delightful rabbit warren with real character which comes with great age. The prices are reasonable too. What's not to like?

Sadly places like this are seemingly impossible to find, but thankfully this one is here in the heart of Newport, There are three different rooms to choose from inside and also tables outside too. An added bonus is, unlike many places that close ridiculously early, this one is open until 5pm, so if you want proper 'afternoon' tea at around 4.30 then you can get it here. Their meals too are extremely good, in value and in taste. Currently, in winter they are doing delicious turkey dinners with roast potatoes, stuffing and pigs in blankets, (and the place is decorated beautifully for Christmas with a lovely big tree inside) but all through the year they do roasts and delicious omelettes, and often have specials on the menu including American breakfasts which are very nice. They do lovely milkshakes too. Wonderful place, I go every week.

Upon our arrival we were welcomed and the staff were very friendly. Our order was taken quickly and the staff are very accommodating. The children were also made to feel welcome. Our drinks and food was lovely, my daughter loved her milkshake and especially how it was served in a milk bottle. The atmosphere was wonderful and and we will definitely be returning.

A wonderful, unchanged, old-fashioned teashop. You can get toasted tea-cakes, poached eggs on toast and lots of other classic and often difficult-to-find comestibles alongside delicious home-made cakes and pots of real (leaf) tea with real (jugs of) milk. Not cheap but fabulous. And not solely the habitat of the blue-rinse brigade - its very old-fashioned-ness makes it trendy with all age groups.

The seventeenth-century house retains its bay windows and they look out on St Thomas's church and its square. It has exposed beams, and when we lunched there it was pleasantly quiet. The food is simple, traditional and in good but not huge portions.

This building is very old and the tearoom is in keeping with a past era. The room is light with plenty of windows to people watch while eating. Our reserved table looked so attractive with bone china cups, saucers and plates and when our cake stands arrived, they looked really appetizing. A good selection of fresh, tasty sandwiches, a choice of four varieties of scones and to top it all off a variety of dainty cakes, a small trifle and strawberries, who could ask for more. Everything was absolutely delicious. The only disappointment was the Earl Grey Tea which was unfortunately tasteless. The service was good and the waitress charming. This particular meal requires a booking in advance of at least 24 hours, but all four of us felt it was very good value for money and will be visiting again.

Had a lovely cream tea. We had a child with us and she was brought a cream tea suitable for her age and even had a drink in a tea pot. We had 2coeliacs in our group and they were also able to have the cream tea. We all enjoyed our visit and can't praise them enough. The waitress was very pleasent and attentive. Will definitely make this a regular visit when we come over to see family in the future.
