Good food, good work. However, the portions were not very large, I did not understand that the pasta with white sauce was only half a small bowl, and the roast chicken I ordered for nearly 30 pounds was only half a small one. The atmosphere is great, suitable for dating and enjoyment, not for ordinary activities.

I was between 3 and 4 stars but given the price point I had to go with 3. The drinks were lovely and about normal price for a cocktail. Service was leisurely but that is good at this sort of dining experiences. It was quite loud in restaurant and felt like we had to shout to hear each other - some background music might have helped. It was also quite hard to hear the waitress. The food - they had run out of focaccia which was disappointing as a number of the dishes are just dips to go with the bread. The vegetarian dishes were truly exceptional especially the Jerusalem artichoke and that’s really what earned the stars here. The meat dishes were extremely over priced for dishes that were nothing special. It was £29 for a half roast chicken that was quite dry and really had nothing special about it for the price point. The pigeon was £15 for 4 very small pieces that were underwhelming. The meat dishes felt very much like an afterthought and came very plain for a very high price. I would return but I would only order vegetarian dishes.

Enough is enough. An “optional 10% surcharge” should not be automatically added to a bill. Bit worse, these people try multiple times to coax you out of the extra 10% surcharge- on top of their already expensive menu. Honestly, a really nice meal was ruined last night purely due to this. I spend quite a pretty penny on a yummy meal only to pay the bill and ask for the surcharge to not be added. I was greeted with a “oh, what was the problem, was the food slow or service bad?”. No, I simply just don’t afford an additional £20 for average service - that’s what your wage is for. The sass and outright rudeness I was faced with after asking for it to be … removed … when it shouldn’t even be automatically added just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I hope the management and waitresses read this and change it for the better. No one should be made to feel like a “c you next Tuesday” for not tipping, when the menu is always super expensive and it’s literally written down as an “optional 10% surcharge” Great food, well done chefs. Shame on you front of house staff. Oh, and they rush you to order food, only to then bring out mains as you’re still eating starters. Overall a great meal totally ruined by this ridiculous surcharge. I guarantee other customers feel the same way. Like many other reviews of Gloriosa mention, the staff are stern and cold, quite a let down considering they expect a 10% tip, keyword: expect.

What superb food we all shared today in Gloriosa. If you want a menu that is imaginative and original nowhere in Glasgow can compete with Gloriosa. For sure some days the menu may not offer as many amazing dishes as others, it is all part of the magic! But in my long experience of a few visits pa l have yet to notch up a single disappointment! The staff are quietly enthusiastic about the food they cook and serve and take inordinate delight when you take a moment to communicate your appreciation. Today we positively savoured the sheer pleasure that they derived from sending us off satisfied and happy once again!

Honestly, this place was pretty overrated. Food was tasty and enjoyable, but on the whole only ‘okay’ in consideration of the price and portion size. Wine size really skimpy. Our particular waiter gave off quite an impatient vibe with us. But honestly, the biggest issue was the fact we only saw one toilet, that was right next to certain tables, including ours, in which the children’s high chairs are stored literally beside the one toilet! Incredibly unsanitary, and if I were a parent I’d be appalled and not sit my kid in something so dirty.

Me encantó

food was excellent, server was pretentious and rude, unhelpful and pushy. we arrived 15 minutes late on friday 27/9, and were seated no problem. we were not asked if we had been before or had the menu explained to us (which i understand is standard in restaurants of this kind, and is what i expect when menu is not standard). despite this, the server came up to us 3 times within 10 minutes to ask for our food order, and did not ask for our drink order without being prompted. i understand wanting us to order quickly as we were late - but what happened was that this was communicated through childish passive aggression, and our server actively made it harder for us to order. the appropriately polite response would be to say “as you are 15 minutes late, we would ask you order fairly quickly. can i explain the menu to you, or is there anything else i can do to help you decide?” instead of this we were made to feel extremely unwelcome and rushed - and were given rude looks when we asked for the menu to be explained to us, which was extremely pretentious. our server was an english woman with a striped apron and long brown hair. the other servers seemed lovely when speaking to other tables, so i can tell this is a problem with this specific person rather than across the establishment. nonetheless, i was left feeling unwelcome and out of place, and would not return.

Went to this restaurant on a recommendation. I wouldn’t normally write a positive review when I didn’t enjoy my main course. For me too many herbs. But the hub of the issue was the staff asked for specific feedback on the dish and I stressed it just wasn’t to my taste rather than a bad dish. They offered to replace it and would not charge for the main course. Very stylish in my opinion. Anyway the rest of the meal was excellent , service first class and I would absolutely recommend this restaurant for a night out. Very good atmosphere as well

Disappointed as I had heard good things about this restaurant. There was no welcome when we arrived. We eventually found a staff member who pointed to our table. The service was perfunctory at best. We had to ask her to explain the menu concept as it wasn’t clear. Small plates that come when the kitchen has them ready. They came very fast. The staff did not engage in any way. The food was ok, apart from a cold focaccia. The wine was expensive and not great. We all felt underwhelmed by the food and lacklustre service. It was expensive for what it offered. We all agreed we would not go back, there are better places in the city that offer excellent food and service at a fraction of the price.

Would not recommend! Sadly had two bad experiences here - rude pretentious staff, long waits for below average food. At my most recent visit, not only did it take 30 minutes for them to take our drinks order, but the wait time for the food was horrendous. After waiting another 30 minutes, the focaccia was cold (as if served from the fridge), and steamed artichoke was underdone. Also we waited so long for them to bring out one of the other main dishes (around 40 minutes) we’d ordered that two of us had finished eating before my friends main came. No staff came to check on us during this, we didn’t get any further drinks, and when we explained we no longer wanted the last main as we had waited so long and two out of the three of us had finished eating staff were VERY rude and didn’t even attempt to apologise. Really really poor experience.

Disappointing and didn’t really make sense to us. You can order half a chicken or an 800g steak and there are no sides available at all to go along with them. So I had half a chicken and a little salad with it. Who is eating almost 2 pounds of steak on its own?! The famed focaccia, it was pretty cold and as a result the crumb of the bread itself just sort of flabby and not at all light, the crust was still quite crispy though, but it was as though the bread had been in a fridge. Starters were just fine but really quite expensive for simple cold dishes. Glad we tried it but would not return or recommend in all honesty. A nice cocktail and some perfectly decent wines.

I went here with my partner for a nice, quick lunch but ended up quite disappointed and confused instead. The menu was very strangely put together. It seemed very random even though it had a theme, which we found out after speaking to the waitress. I didn't understand how or what I was supposed to order and I also didn't understand what was starters, main courses, sides etc that you usually see on a menu because it was basically only names of different dishes lined up on a colourful paper. Had to ask the waitress 3 times about the menu because it was so unclear what everything was, especially since nothing was described in the menu. The girl who was serving us did explain the idea, but she was very brief and not clear at all which gave both me and my partner some initial stress because we were confused about the whole situation. The food was decent, very overpriced for the amount of food you got. Since it wasn't categorised, we didn't know if we ordered starters or main courses and in the end we ordered 3 dishes, that we thought would be good to share between the two of us and did not get nearly enough food for two people, even though they told us that the amount of food in the dishes was for two people "to share". So overall, not a great experience. The staff was quite distant, but not unfriendly. One thing I really did not enjoy was that they automatically put on a 10% additional service cost that they literally wrote out on the menu that it was optional and that my partner, who was paying had to tell them to remove it.

TLDR; Tasty food but very over-priced I've eaten here a few times and the menu changes often which is nice, however the last time I visited (18/7/24) I found the prices to be incredibly high and sadly not worth the money. Between 3 we ordered the beetroot salad (£11), steak tartar (£15), roast chicken (~£32) and the rack of lamb served with an aubergine puree type thing (£39) plus some desserts. We were told the lamb was a good size and between that and the chicken it would be enough for 3 people including the two smaller dishes - not the case. The lamb was 5 small chops, which were nice but nothing too memorable, and were smaller than a normal main meal, for £39! Crazy prices. The chicken was really tasty and juicy, but still not worth £32 - it came with about 3 roasted baby potatoes and a side salad, which is incredibly mean when you're paying over £30. Desserts were good, but almost £10 each. I had the almond tart which was a modest portion and again, didn't seem worth the money. The bill was £209 for 3 people (including service & 1 bottle of vino verde). Service was good, nice place inside, but extremely over-priced which is why I'm giving it 3 stars and I likely won't be back.

We ordered bread and a selection of dishes which arrived when they were ready. A slightly slow start perhaps but once all the food arrived we shared all the dishes between the six of us. I'd heard lots of people talking about wanting to visit Gloriosa but I just don't think the food deserves all the hype. For me, it is a case of The Emperor's New Clothes. A lot of potential. I appreciate the focus on excellence and simplicity. The cocktails and drinks were resoundingly excellent, with attention to detail and well balanced flavours. Simplicity is a double edged sword; while all of the food was good, it was not good enough. Between expectations set by the drinks, atmosphere/service and, ultimately, prices, the food lacked lustre and was disappointing. However, there were individual components of dishes which met the bar for excellence. At a different price point this could easily be 4 or 5 stars. But the bar is set very high. I think with some refinement it is not far away.

High prices for a small quantity of poor quality food. To be honest I am not quite sure what they actually did that can be described as cooking. A starter of a few radishes, olives and a spoonful of taramasalata on a plate followed by a main course that was almost entirely cold chick peas (straight from a can/jar I am prepared to bet) and three tiny pieces of indifferent tuna sprinkled with herbs and lemon zest. Bread was extra - almost £7 for four small pieces of focaccia with oil. One expects a mark up in restaurants but I doubt if the ingredients for all the dishes we had was a quarter of the price paid. To add insult to injury the 'optional' service charge is added to the bill when it is presented - i.e. you have to ask them to take it off if you don't want to pay it (and frankly there is no reason to). As others have noted, the decor is stark. This place needs to stop believing its own hype and drastically improve if it wants to stay in business. We skipped dessert and bought two pastries from the supermarket across the road and took them home, by far the nicest part of our meal and less than half the price of one dessert at Gloriosa.

Visited recently for the first time and it’s one of those rare places that lives up to and even exceeds their reputation. Some of the best food I’ve had in a long time, everything was delicious, atmosphere was good, and the staff friendly. Can’t wait to return.

I went months back now but I’m still thinking about how delicious the squid and mint chocolate choux bun I ate were. Proper nice food, not cheap but definitely worth it!

Gloriosa is a culinary delight of simple goodness. Honest , fresh and healthy food. The focaccia is to die for. I couldn't fault any dish in any way. Presentation, taste and portions 100 percent satisfaction.

I had the pleasure of eating in this restaurant the food was delicious and tasty, the staff were friendly and attentive and gave great recommendations for the dishes on offer. I would have no hesitation in recommending and will return with my family on my next visit to Glasgow.

We went as a family group. It was a great time. Followed the review by Jay Rayner . He , and the restaurant didn’t disappoint. It was fabulous. We listened to the advice of our waitress and shared plates. Focaccia amazing, served with anchovies. Sea trout and blood orange , carrot rappe and egg mayonnaise , spaghetti with cavelero pesto, red mullet, roast chicken, individual puddings . All wonderful. Service was outstanding. A great occasion!

A modern semi industrial ambience with a feeling of vibrant space. A kitchen that is in top form. Imaginative presentations of classic ingredients eg sea trout, chicken liver, artichoke. Focaccia that is a masterclass of how it should be made. A lovely menu that makes it difficult to chose. An eclectic wine list, reasonably priced. Try the white Scillian. A successor of sorts to the much loved, much missed Alcemilla. Same head chef and a new restaurant that shows what made Alcemilla amazing but with wonderfully new.

We have been many times to Gloriosa and always really enjoyed the food and general atmosphere. We have come with friends or just ourselves and like the mediterranean sharing plates. When we went most recently we got seated beside the front door which kept hitting us with wind and banging. The service was bad - while the small plates came fairly fast, we waited ages for the bigger plates (with no drinks as another wasn’t offered). We noticed that after the table next to us paid, the girl was waiting for her friend to use the bathroom to leave and she got told she had to move and couldn’t sit to wait, so she had to stand awkwardly between tables. The food was good but not as amazing as usual. The focaccia is amazing and I liked the eggs and panna cotta. But the clams were full of sand, the cavolo so salty it was inedible so that dish was way too expensive for what it was. The artichokes were ok but not incredible. I hope it was just a one-off but we were disappointed overall. We will definitely try again.

Had read and heard good things about this restaurant and it didn’t disappoint. Food, especially the focaccia and taramasalata, was outstanding. Service was good especially the main waiter who served us, his knowledge of the menu and wine was impressive. It was a real treat and am looking forward to another visit.

Superb menu and drinks list: really imaginative. Everything was beautifully cooked. The fish was outstanding and the vegetable dishes very flavoursome. The plates are not really small/sharing plates but are all quite big: 2 per person is more than enough. Very nice candlelit ambience.

In Glasgow for a conference and Jay Rayner convinced us to book here. The focaccia was indeed excellent, as were the starters (I had anchovy / chilli). My mackerel main was humungous - the entire fish perched on a bed of tomatoes, mash, and paprika. Probably the biggest main course I've been served for years - indeed, I just couldn't finish it. Tasted great - very Spanish and authentic. My wife's mussel + spaghetti was fine also. Rhubarb and almond clafoutis to finish. I could barely walk. Only negative was an apparently dumb wine waiter who neither spoke nor offered a taste before pouring; other service was charming. We got out for £60 each inc. service which is hardly cheap but hardly expensive either, given the very solid cooking skills on show. Well worth a visit - the is unpretentious, well cooked Mediterranean food and definitely a step above the chain alternatives.

Worst restaurant experience ever. Table of 6 for a birthday meal. Booked in advance. Shown to our table then basically ignored. Waited for 30 minutes without being asked for a drink. Had to leave the table and go up to the two waiting staff who were standing at the bar chatting and asked to order some drinks. At about 40 minutes after arrival, the waitress approached the table and took our drink order. Upon asking what a certain element of one of the cocktails was, the waitress brought over the bottle and asked if we wanted to sniff it. I'm not joking. Once we had our drinks we had to ask to have the menu explained a little and how many dishes they recommended we share. It was pretty painful and I think more staff training is needed. We sat for a few more minutes and decided to pay for the drinks and leave this awkward experience. We all felt like we gatecrashed someone else's party and trying to get some basic hospitality was a struggle. Won't be back. I'd say avoid all together if the service is anything like what we experienced.

Tasty food, great veggie options, polite staff and a lovely cosy/casual atmosphere. I knocked one star off as they no longer have a veggie pasta option atm and that was always my go to (always such tasty and slightly unique flavors) but hoping they bring it back. No other faults :)

We were gifted a voucher so had our first visit today. We weren't disappointed. The atmosphere might be understated but the food is delicious. Service was attentive and we had plenty time to enjoy the meal at a relaxed pace. From the focaccia to the trout pate, the denver steak and a wonderful chocolate and chestnut cake desserts, the menu is fresh and full of flavour. We loved it and will be back.

Visited for a late lunch on 28th December to compliment a trip to Glasgow and on the recommendation of a well known restaurant critic’s review. The focaccia did not disappoint and we ordered seconds. Menu was obviously more limited than usual given the time of year but we will be back to try the Globe Artichoke when it’s in season. Service was lovely.

My friend and I were wandering around the area, cold and hungry, looking for vegan options for me, then found this restaurant online. We popped in for warm drinks first, then ordered mains. Unfortunately I can't find the menu here to give the names of the dishes and we didn't think to take photos but both meals were beautifully presented and delicious! I had a thick 'stew' with aubergines, mushrooms, broccoli and red peppers, which sat next to saffron rice, gorgeous hummus and fresh salad. My friend also had an amazing spinach dish (with couscous) that looked like an Indian Saag but had more interesting flavours than any Indian saag that I've ever had. That also came with a separate salad and hummus. For desert, I had Baclava and my friend had chocolate orange cake, which, again, were delicious and both very generous portions. Service was excellent and, as an unexpected bonus, we had a surprisingly long, deep and meaningful conversation with the owner before other customers arrived. It was lovely to make that connection, as people rarely seem to engage with each other these days. The owner's colleague also had a very pleasant vibe. I have only given 4* for atmosphere but this is only because I was hoping for a VERY warm and toasty refuge from the cold outside. Nevertheless, it was warmer than the previous place we'd just tried and which didn't even serve decaf coffee. I'll be moving into the area in a few weeks, so I'll definitely be back regularly to work my way through some more tasty vegan dishes on the Bay Tree's menu and I'm sure my friend will also pop in for breakfast occasionally, if they still do it ....
