I would like to have written a positive review but having both called and emailed to enquire if they have wheelchair access and an accessible toilet I have had no response and will book elsewhere. I can only assume that they do not or they do not want my custom. Very poor.

Gilbey’s Restaurant was an excellent choice for the Red Kite Board Dinner. Sandra and Dace were very good hosts and everyone on the table for 10 enjoyed a very good evening. My liver pate was very good & others liked their salmon or soup. The main course of pork & crackling was good, my neighbours enjoyed their lamb & the steak was good. My cheese plate was slightly mean on the cheeses but my neighbours certainly enjoyed the whole meal. Please see photos. Would I return, I would hope to take my wife for a Sunday lunch, they are ver popular so Sandra suggested booking ahead on 01494 727242 or oldamersham@gilbeygroup.com

Enjoyed a great evening yesterday with friends for dinner at Gilbey's. Gilbey's is a trusted restaurant that always delivers whatever the occasion. As always we enjoyed great service, delicious food and some superb wine. Recommend the Brandy cured Loch Duart salmon or the wild mushroom tartlet for starters. While the sirloin steak and the seabeam were just perfect for mains. We love Gilbey's.

We had the pleasure of eating here as part of a group function. The food was extremely good and the service was fantastic. I highly recommend the lamb! They were very helpful understanding of my wife's dietary requirements, which is often very awkward to bring up. Whilst not cheap, for the standard of food I would say this is extremely good value as well. The place is clean and clearly well looked after. Wonderful place, I just wished we lived nearer and could come more often.

This was our first visit to Gilbey's which was for a special birthday meal. We managed to get booked at quite short notice for an early Friday evening treat. Our reception was welcoming and understated, being shown straight to our table. We started with a lovely raspberry cocktail followed by a beautiful beetroot tart which tasted as good as it looked, enhanced by a flower of apple. Main courses of pork and mackerel (different dishes!) were finished by affogato which was also delicious. All in all, a lovely meal but I would have liked bread to start with.

We found a very pretty restaurant with a terrace in Amersham high street while visiting the town last Monday and decided to return that evening to see if we could get a table. We were in luck and had a really lovely meal there. My husband had the 2 course 2 meal for £26.50 while I had the a la carte and chose Cornish plaice for £25.50 and a chocolate cremeau dessert for £8.50. His course was fish and chips and a delicious pudding, all beautifully presented. Service was excellent and we felt we were on the continent!

Meeting in a suitable restaurant for a large family birthday gathering we tried Gilbey's and were highly impressed with the food and service although the range on the menu was a little disappointing but well cooked nonetheless and the value for money was pretty good and all arrived together and well presented by the excellent chefs. Service was immaculate and we were all looked after very well considering large groups with elderly relations is never easy to get it all correct! Good wine choice available and apart from a limited menu was very good indeed.

Disappointing evening at Gilbeys. Sat down at 7.45 and by 8 our starters had been served and cleared. Asked for mains to be delayed “a lot” but they arrived by 8.20. So a two course meal finished in well under an hour; this might be a personal bugbear but it meant the meal (an anniversary) didn’t feel like an event at all.As for the food……obviously the starters were prepped well in advance (see above), so were ok but not startling. The belly pork main was tasty albeit about 50% fat, whilst the duck would have benefitted from a jus/gravy/sauce. Not bad food but given the level of cooking aimed for, a bit disappointing. Two glasses of wine and two courses each - £100, inc service……..not good value

This was a special treat to take a relative to a favourite restaurant of hers for her 80th birthday. She has been a number of times, and had previously always enjoyed herself. We arrived separately this time, and as I arrived, the staff were muttering under their breath because she asked to be seated outside when they had, mistakenly, booked a table for us inside. She is very concerned about Covid and would not have booked an inside table, but they were adamant and did not consider they could be wrong. From the outset, the staff were bad tempered. The food was bland, with the starter mainly inedible. £9 for an open cheese sandwich on a half baked crumpet is overpriced. When we came to pay, although we ordered from the early evening fixed price set menu, our individual dishes were priced without the set menu reduction. The waitress, still cross, disappeared inside the restaurant with my credit card, and seemed unable to operate the card reader. By that point in the evening, I wanted to leave so badly I didn't even question the bill. If it hadn't been a birthday celebration, which I didn't want to make any more upsetting by starting an argument with the waiting staff, I would have asked for the "voluntary" service charge to be removed, and the bill to be corrected. Very disappointing evening and we will not be going back.

Gilbey's probably doesn't need even more favourable reviews, but it is so unfailingly well worth visiting that it would be unfair not to repeat what has been said before: excellent food, with now a much enlarged open terrace that provides a really good venue for summer lunch in the shade of a massive umbrella. Always friendly service has survived the stresses of lockdown, as has the quality and variety of the food and drink on offer. And in how many restaurants is the (very good) house sparkling wine one that they actually make themselves? Irregular visits over a number of years have always resulted in the feeling of a lunchtime well-spent and the most characterful high street in Britain provides a much needed walk afterwards too.

I chose the 2 choice set menu as its was £23.50 which was reasonable but mainly I wasnt paying £33 for a 10oz steak. I had the ham hock terrine it lacked a bit of seasoning but was ok. The jelly stuff with it did nothing to the dish as it was just sweet. Then fish and chips. Chips were excellent but the fish although cooked well was under seasoned for me. Overall it was ok value wise for what I had.

Not only was the greeting from a rather obnoxious maitre d' insincere but despite it being only half full and the table empty, we were made to wait almost 5 mins to be seated in a rather narrow entrance. Our guest's starter was under cooked, as were the vegetables in the main, and the only saving grace was the quality wine list. It is difficult times we are all living in but the atmosphere was staid and we found the service to be unacceptable. We have eaten in Gilbeys for many years and it was our first choice to support local restaurants during August. We also took my mother who hadn’t eaten out since March. It is easy to move around without being near people and with a restaurant this is usually packed with tables and people it was lovely to have more space. Service is as always friendly and professional. And the lemon tart as always - delicious. However, I have always had a hard choice of selecting my choice as there is always - for me - more than one thing I want to try. So far so normal, but then later my husband said he also had the same issue. We are very different eaters when out so it was a little disappointing. The daytime menu looked much more exciting but only available in the evening 6-7pm. We had the parfait which was creamy but very runny, and the stone bass which had an interesting texture but the taste was drowned out by the pumpernickel bread. Two lots of fish cakes, offered as starter and main course, which were ok, a little dry. Best was the lemon tart and sticky toffee pudding. Just to point out that both mum and I selected the fish cakes as main course as neither of us fancied any of the mains. We are both fish lovers and the only fish on the main was accompanied by a chicken stock! Anyway, we hope this is a hiccup and we will continue to book Gilbey’s.

4 of us had booked to go to Gilbey’s in Amersham on a Saturday evening. Slightly rocky start in terms of welcome and service; our friends arrived ahead of us and were seated. It was a very cold evening and I was wearing a coat that was too big and heavy to put on the back of the chair. However, the waiter had disappeared without asking about our coats! I stood there for a few minutes, but then had to go to find him to take them - not a great start.Having ordered in a timely fashion, our starters arrived without any delay. All 4 of us really liked what we had ordered; things were looking up.Oh dear, our optimism didn’t last too long.2 of the party had ordered the same, vegetarian, dish. Both found it extremely bland; 1 bucked it up with some salt, the other asked for some Parmesan to put on it. Both agreed it was only marginally better, but didn’t want to make a fuss and complain.Halfway through our main courses a group of 10 people arrived. This is a tiny restaurant, with the tables VERY close together. These people were obviously celebrating something, had obviously already been drinking and came in shouting and yelling without any regard for fellow diners. Why, oh why would a restaurant as tiny as Gilbey’s take a booking for 10 people and seat them within inches of 2 tables with 4 people on each. GREED. The Prosecco corks were popping as this group walked in - they were obviously going to have a fairly large bill and other diners could just lump it.It was now nigh on impossible for us to talk.To add insult to injury, when the waiter came to clear the plates he asked if the food had been ok, but he obviously wasn’t at all interested in the answer because when the 2 people who had found their dish bland told him this there wasn’t a flicker of acknowledgement and it was very obvious he hadn’t passed the comment on when we paid the bill - without waiting for dessert or coffee. We couldn’t get out of there fast enough.Thank goodness for the nice chain restaurant a few yards down the road, which was very happy to welcome us in for coffee and dessert when we explained what had happened!!

The staff were charming, the ambience delightful, but....My starter was the goats cheese panna cotta which was very pleasant and I then chose the duck dish from the main menu. This was amongst the more expensive items on the menu. The dish arrived beautifully presented and the duck perfectly cooked. However there was just one small slice of the ducks breast and was totally overwhelmed by the accompaniments. It was a ridiculously small portion of the main ingredient.

Last time we came there was an Asian-European fusion menu that we did not care for. Now, it is back to its modern European roots. Excellent all round. Ham hock terrine as a starter was delightful. Lightly fried sea bream and (separately) a pea risotto were equally wonderful for mains.

Excellent service, fantastic food and lovely environment. What a joy to be in a quiet restaurant, that hasn’t followed the trend of making it has hard as possible to hear/speak to anyone.

It would be easy to overlook Gilbey's but that would be to do yourself out of a top notch meal in a small, cosy restaurant that has stood the test of time but has not just rested on it's reputation but continues to try and bring a fresh approach to seasonal eating.

Beautiful restaurant. Staff are experience and great at what they do. Good selection of wines, varying in prices. Pea and lettuce soup is really tasty and the lamb also very good. I’ve been here quite a few times and I’m never disappointed

I love Gilbey's Old Amersham. I've enjoyed lots of meals here over the years but this was my first visit since the recent refurbishment. I like the contemporary, light look. We visited for dinner with friends in July and ate inside at a lovely table near the fireplace. As always service was welcoming, charming, and efficient.

Last ate here in 2011 - I would say the food has deteriorated in quality. This time we sat outside, which was lovely, service was efficient. We were both very disappointed with the food. The squid and prawn starter had 1 prawn and everything seemed to be deep fried ! There are too many flavours on the plate, a fillet of bream (the waitress said it was sea bass) was ruined by a romesco sauce (not needed) and strange potatoes !

Celebrated my parents 50th wedding anniversary here. The room was decorated beautifully and the food was delicious and first rate. Service was excellent.

Had a meal to celebrate our anniversary, the menu was varied and the food really good although it did feel like we were put in the corner blocking the fire exit! Also, due to the confines, depending who is dining at the time; the atmosphere might be a bit loud with the tables so close.

Birthday party. 3 of us got food poisoning and we each ordered the same dish. We reported the incident the next day with no subsequent feedback. Then reported 4 days later and still a serious lack of ownership.

Food was pretty uninspiring. Felt pretty uncomfortable as we were squashed in and our table too close to others. It seems that if you are a couple and not a larger group expect a squeezed in a corner or walk way or by a door. Our small table wasn’t big enough for our plates which had to hang over the table! Felt a bit like we weren’t welcome.

Despite accidently reserving at table at the Eton eatery of the same name a window table was offered to us at Old Amersham on our arrival. Our drinks order was immediately taken and served; our mains of fish and chips, perfect sized potions, also promptly delivered. Pudding was delightful: Yorkshire rhubarb panacotta with honeycomb.

Thank you Gilbeys for another wonderful Sunday lunch. We came for my daughter's 25th birthday - just 6 of us for a family meal. (8 years ago, she used to work as a waitress for you. The standard is as good today as it was then). As usual, the food was delicious. We all enjoyed every course.

Service fine starter ok but main course adequate at best. Disappointing. We were upstairs in a very pleasant room but in a comparative market the offering feel short of the mark.

Came in to say "Goodbye" to the landlady. They're closing down. Awful sad... end of an era. The food was typical pub grub, with a twist, so it was tasty. Plenty of it. They had a good range of ales.

Our family decided they wanted a takeaway from the ‘new place’ in Great Missenden. With that they meant the Fish Bar and Mangal 😃. We can highly recommend if you are looking for friendly and fast service and delicious food prepared right in front of you. We will most certainly go back. Oh and ‘mangal’ means a Middle Eastern barbecue used to grill a variety of succulent meat and roast vegetables. Their decision to combine this with the more traditional fish and chips is really clever! So please give them a try - you will not be disappointed. We tried the chicken shish kebab, wings, spicy lamb skewer and fish and chips. Everything very yummy and decent quantity also.

Cycled past many times looked v nice so decided to pop in for a drink 2 weeks ago. Barmaid v chatty good feel about the place lighting perfect candles on nice background music. You could tell the lady working cared about the business! After this visit we decided to go back last night for a meal. So different no smile or hello when walked in 2 team working just didn’t look happy actually looked like they had fallen out. Sat at table one of them brought menu then we chose a bottle of wine which was nice and came quick. We then sat there 15 mins before getting up and asking if we ordered at the bar or were they coming over.one if them came over and took the order, food came around 30 mins later. The food was ok but pies could have been bigger with more filling. After finishing nobody came and asked if we would like a dessert in the end I had to get up and ask for the bill. We then left feeling v disappointed all round. Such a nice first visit what happened why such a let down. With prices high and pub in a small village out of the way it needs to be good every time not every other for it to survive in this tough environment. Not sure if will come back again 🤔
