Gilbey's Bar & Restaurant - Eton in Windsor and Maidenhead

Early dinner at Gilbey’s on the set menu. Nice quality food and friendly service. We were sitting in the bar area where staff will gather. Next time would sit in the main restaurant area. Overall a nice evening thank you

Food mediocre and very expensive Service dreadful - they gossiped about my partner when he went to the bathroom complaining that he didn’t ask where it was before he went - we’ve been there many, many times. I was in earshot. If they want to charge such high prices the wine list needs to improve and they need a better chef.

This should be a 5/5 rating but felt the owners overcharge on pricing. Delicious breaded fish & chips, exceptional fish cakes with elegant serving style. The price will exclude plenty of potential guests leaving tables empty and pub tables down the road full. Ensure you stay for dessert absolutely delicious. High rating for food and staff

Recently had our small post wedding ceremony event here in the private dining room. The organisation through Emma was easy with no issues. The staff were excellent and very attentive on the day. The food was amazing. We were very happy with the good selection of starters, mains and desserts for our guests to choose from. Great selection of wines to choose from. Very good value, amazing service, great quality food. Very happy we chose Gilbey’s and can’t rate the place highly enough. Thank you.

This is a restaurant that seems to be run by accountants who don't like food. The ingredients are poor - fish cakes with less fish than you would find at M&S, greasy smoked salmon, disappointing steaks. Very poor value for money. Windsor is not blessed with great restaurants but If you would like to have a meal in a non-chain restaurant try A la Russe or Sebastians rather than this place. Good service despite this.

We were a chance walk in having arrived in Windsor and decided to eat out. We weren’t exactly dressed for it but they found us a table and what a delight. Lovely friendly service. Tasty food and the most beautiful wine. We were also VERY happy to pay the £1 towards the hospice. What a lovely idea. Thank you for giving us a table and we will certainly love to come back

Eton - Windsor definitely - is frustrating when it comes to dining out. There are plenty of OK restaurants, complacently reliant on passing tourist trade, but so very few great establishments. Gilbey’s entices from the outside looking in - stylish, cozy, warm, characterful. And the welcome once inside is positive, the menu appetising and the choice of wine, comprehensive. The Reality on the plate however was disappointing. Pork belly, the portion of which can only be described as measly ( once the necessary fat had been discarded ) and uninspiring ( lazy ! ) veg that was less than hot. The fish dish was excellent however. Greater consistency and an injection of imagination would not go amiss.

Decided to stay in Windsor for last night in UK flying out of Heathrow. Stayed on the Eton side of the bridge and were so happy with our choice! This establishment is so classy and professional. The excellent staff gave us a parking pass and explained where to park. Easy. Our room was lovely and our dinner was superb. It is very very busy with tourists just over the foot bridge in the heart of Windsor. Loved walking over there and seeing the sights - castle especially! But enjoyed walking back to the peace and quiet of Gilbeys! The boys were on holiday so would Love to return when Eton is in session! Highly recommended this place for hotel and/food!

Lovely restaurant in a great location, really nice and relaxed feel. Serving staff were great and couldn’t fault the food. Great choice of drinks, especially wine. No beer on tap which would have been preferable but really great none the less.

We had our wedding meal at Gilbeys Windsor on 22.07.23 in the Gallery room. The service was incredible. They setup the room with our decorations perfectly, they were super attentive to all the guests and all the food came out on time and perfectly. Nothing was too much. Big thanks for making the evening stress free.

Extremely poor meal, starters were ok but tepid when they arrived. Steak was poor quality, cooked incorrectly to order, and tough with gristle. Out of a party of 5 (4 had steak) each steak was either over cooked and contained gristle.! Restaurant did compensate but unfortunately thus kind gesture was wasted. Staff openly blamed “a bad night” on a large party in another part of the restaurant. Didn’t want to risk the £12+ for a pudding so cannot comment. Sorry, it was just not good enough in regards to the £234 food bill! (Which was discounted did to the steaks) So disappointed as visited a number of months ago and had an exceptional meal, how things change’

Everything about this Townhouse was fantastic. Beautiful room very traditional spotless bathroom great shower. Coffee machine & kettle which we love. A short walk over the bridge into Central Windsor. Emma was so hospitable & helpful we will definitely be returning & recommending friends & family.

Went there with family on a special occasion dinner. The atmosphere of the restaurant is good, as well as the service. Nice variety of food on the menu and good portions and taste. The only negative was that some types of food were not taken good care of the presentation or little details. For example - we ordered a creme brulee for dessert which had caramelized cashew nuts on top. However, we also found a huge piece of caramel (like the size of a candy) on top, which could have been quite dangerous for the teeth if someone did not see it and chewed it. The price of some of the plates on the menu were also slightly overpriced but understandable since it is a family run business in Eton.

We go to Windsor once a year and tend to go to Gilbeys. Nicely varied menu and lovely food, drinks and service at a reasonable price. I had blue cheese, walnut, pear and Stilton salad for starters. Very nice if a little strong for my taste, but it was blue cheese after all. Wife had a lovely white creamed onion soup. Mains I had a fish ‘tagine’ with roasted cauliflower, golden onion and almond rice which was excellent. Wife had mussels and chips which was also excellent. Couple of nice wines and they do champagne by the glass too. Service good and not OTT. Looking forward to next year!

I don’t understand how this restaurant has so many good reviews - the food is presented nicely but could honesty cook far better myself at home. Massively over priced (maybe expected for the area), steak for £27 I’d expect from Wetherspoons and when ordering bread got two tiny slices. I don’t like bad mouthing restaurants, especially during the current climate...but it was bad.

1st time here and I have lived in Windsor for 5 years. The restaurant is much bigger inside than it looks from the outside. Four of us ate here on a quiet Monday evening. We enjoyed some of the most delicious food you could imagine in a wonderful setting served by attentive and helpful staff. Not too dear either but certainly not cheap. Between us we had steak, good old fashioned fish and chips, fish cakes and sea bass risotto all of which exceeded expectations. But for me the show stealer was an INCREDIBLE cauliflower panna cotta. Wow it was yummy ! Give it a visit

We managed to get a table in the courtyard garden on a warm summer’s evening, which was well worth it. Great service, food was delicious and the wine went down very well. Nice to support one of the few independent restaurants in Windsor.

Friendly staff and everything clean and chic. But woefully slow service all the way through the meal (and a one-hour+ wait between starter and main - with no explanation or offer of bread/olives as one person did not have a starter) and very, very average cooking (think home style, on a weeknight) with strange flavour combinations. Definitely not worth £50 per head - four of us had 3 starters, 4 mains and 1 dessert, plus some drinks. My sea bass (£21) was cooked well enough but with only one fillet, a few smears of two purées, a dessert spoon of spinach and two artichoke hearts from a jar on the plate, I was deeply unimpressed. Maybe there was a staff and/or supply problem - why not be honest?

We had a nice table by the window, allowing us to take in the lovely main street of Eton, while also enjoying the decor inside. The head waiter gave us a warm welcome, and served us well throughout - friendly and professional with perfect balance in our opinion.The food was from the lunch set menu, which was good value for the high quality on offer. We had duck liver pâté and blue cheese / pear / walnut salad for starters, shepherds pie and fish & chips for mains, finishing with sticky toffee fig pudding and coconut crème brûlée for desert. All were well-presented and exceptionally tasty.We had such a nice, relaxing lunch, and came away certain that we’ll return!

We enjoyed our evening at Gilbey's; nice food, good wine and efficient service. However, we couldn't understand why when I booked, the only time available was 20.45, as there were plenty of empty tables! This didn't distract from our enjoyment and we would eat here again when staying in Eton.

We are here on a Friday evening and it was perfect.We had the duck liver pate and pigeon to start. The flavour of the pate served with rhubarb was amazing and the presentation of both dishes was beautiful. We then enjoyed the steak and fish and chips which were really tasty. Followed by the sticky toffee pudding and the chocolate torte. They have a nice selection of dessert wines and digestifs, highly recommend the 10 year old port on the menu. It’s made by a family friend and tastes divine. The service was fantastic with friendly staff and it’s one of the best meals we’ve had in a long time. Definitely recommend and we’ll be back!
