Giannis Italian Restaurant in Scarborough

Honestly disappointing. Travelled over 2hrs after a recommendation. Walking towards the restaurant we really got the intimate, family run feel of this place. Unfortunately it just doesn't give the same vibe inside. The staff were serving, just that, no recommendations, no warmth or welcoming feel. In a place like this the staff need to love the food they're serving and bring the atmosphere people expect. We weren't offered any drinks once we were sat for food. The fries were undercooked, which we brought to the attention of the waiter and he assured us they would be removed from the bill, we did have to query this on paying as they hadn't been. The lasagne was black and so hot it has blistered the roof of my mouth. In 32 years I've never come away with a burn from food. The garlic bread was dripping in oil. Overall quite bland and underwhelming. We felt the seating was a little off. Tables for 2 around the room with a large family table in the centre. The family had every right to enjoy their meals but for a couple wanting a relaxing meal, 6 adults, 2 small kids and 2 dogs, made for quite the opposite. Given the various spaces available throughout the restaurant it would be a much better experience with a more intimate area for smaller/child free parties.

Food was excellent quality. I found the staff to be a little vague when asked about specifics on the menu, like they didn’t actually know. Also, served another table before us, though we were seated first. But they were all friendly enough and the food-delicious. A cute little cosy smoking area outside was a lovely little touch too.

Food was really nice and flavourful. I especially love the starter bits I had which is oysters and special garlic pizza. The wait is abit long, however. But overall really good and nice staff.

Service here was good the waiting staff were rushed off there feet and still managed to attend to all without a extreme long wait, they were all very pleasant and ploite, Food is lovely very rustic and traditional Italian food with all fresh ingredients. Very much enjoyed by all my family on our trip, just abit to rich for myself but would definitely return when we are back in the area tho to try more of the menu

This was a spur of the moment meal out whilst on a family holiday, sick of fried food at this point. We visited this place years ago and went for memory lane, was a spectacular choice with food to die for! My recommendation is that you must try the Rossini, to die for. The service was as good as the food with our waiter engaging with our youngest, who hasn’t stopped talking about her new Italian language skills lol. Seriously though, I could not recommend Gianni’s highly enough.

We had dinner here with a friend of my husband who booked the table. I started with the calamari, my husband had the chicken pâté, and our friend ordered fresh oysters – all of which were delicious. For mains, I had the seafood marinara pasta, our friend had ravioli, and we also shared a pizza. Everything was great, no complaints at all – we all really enjoyed the meal. We didn’t order dessert because I was already full, but I did have an aperitif – a Frangelico, which I enjoyed. The service was consistently great throughout the evening.

Gianni Italian Restaurant is an absolute gem! From the moment you walk in, the warm atmosphere and authentic charm set the tone. The food is nothing short of amazing—each dish bursts with rich, traditional Italian flavours that make every bite unforgettable. A true taste of Italy! However, I only had garlic bread and pizza, but the family loved it. Also, beautiful to look at a night

I went to Gianni's in Scarborough and it was the best Italian meal I have ever had and I have had quite a few. Service was good and friendly, prices were very reasonable. I will definitely be visiting Gianni's next time I am in Scarborough.

Lovely food and decor ...but a very grumpy head waiter took the edge off the evening.

Wow, everything was amazing. The food flavours and textures were perfectly balanced. The atmosphere was lively but not intrusive. The service was exceptional. The staff knew all about their food and wines. This is the best restaurant I have been to. It's worth staying in a low-budget hotel, just to eat here. Thank you, Giannis's, for the most wonderful and thoroughly enjoyable evening. 😍

I ate here during a recent stay in Scarborough & really enjoyed it. The food, service, atmosphere and wine were all really good and I do intend returning.

Food was really tasty and cooked to perfection, couldn't fault the service they couldn't do enough for us.

I had an amazing calzone ,we was sat on a lovely table in the corner by the window and our waiter Alex was amazing he spent time to speak to us and to tell us about the history of the restaurant and he was a great young lad and we will definitely come back thanks to Alex we had an amazing night ,I definitely recommend going and get a calzone !!!

Great, simple Italian food, friendly service, and a comfortable environment.

I'm sure the food is lovely, but for anyone who isn't local, make sure you book in advance - even mid-week. I'm glad they were fully booked, but with no indication on their website or on Google that booking is advised I think it's important to note somewhere for anyone else who might waste a trip.

Went for dinner at 7 pm on Monday evening with four other family members. We were greeted warmly and friendly from the out set. The food was wonderful, we had the oysters, creamy garlic mushrooms, spicy tiger prawns, and calamari with the warm olive bread to start. I had the house special salad with crevettes which was extremely tasty. The others had the linguine marinara and monkfish. The ladies finished with creme brulé and we all had coffee to end. Every single dish we had was a delight. The surroundings warm and welcoming, the service exemplary. The final bill, though not cheap, WAS good value. To Giovanni's - THANK YOU. I happily recommend.

Fantastic Italian cuisine with lovely staff for my 60th birthday celebrations. First time we have tried Giannis ,would highly recommend it .We will definitely be back soon .

Pleasant friendly staff, very well presented and good range of delicious meals and deserts on both evening visits. Welcome serenity at rear of upstairs dining area on first night, unwelcome exuberance from group table front of upstairs on second evening can be put down to the approaching seasonal works 'do's' . So if management can steer groups to front and couples to rear it would better mitigate against being hostage to a bawdy soap opera of in-jokez at high decibels from starter through to desert over the coming weeks. Service and atmosphere both dipped from 5* on evening #1, to just about 4* on second evening as staff likely kept a tactical distance in slight dismay from the chattering and guffaws. Pricing perfect for quality and experience 👌.

Everything was fabulous! The atomsphere, the food and the staff - we felt very welcome and comfortable in this restaurant. The food was surprisingly lovely and truly italian. I am normally always disappointed with spaghetti bolognese but here it was divine. We would definitely come back and visit when we come back to Scarborough .

Alessandro!! What a guy!! We've been twice when visiting the area, once back in July for my wife and I's anniversary and we were so impressed when we knew we were going to be back in the area we brought my farther in law and his Italian speaking partner who was made to feel welcome conversing in Italian and when it came to the rest of our visit we were not disappointed 😊 service 5 star, atmosphere 5 star and Food five star even with 2 off menu special orders, excellent!!! all round and Alessandro our waiter was excellent and such a gentleman and thank you for the recommendation on the red wine "eccellente" - Chris and family 😊

Nice good tasty food big portions size and friendly service but improvements to be made. Booked table but waited 15 mins to get the table. We were seated in the meantime and ordered drinks whilst we waited. The waitress when holding our empty glasses for the table held the rim with fingers inside the glass too for us to use. The waiter was chewing gum with mouth open which is off putting too. Also at the end of the meal another waitress was scraping our leftover food on to a plate to clear which made me feel like staff and not what a customer wants to experience. Just take the plates away and scrape the food in the kitchen please.

We've visited Scarborough a number of times this year and eaten at Giannis on three occasions. The food is always lovely, it's flavoursome and well cooked. My Monkfish linguini on Saturday was delicious. The meal and wine was very good value and the service very attentive. Definitely recommend Giannis to anyone visiting Scarborough.

Food OK. Some cleaning needed especially the banister to the toilets upstairs as it was very sticky.

Had dinner here a couple of nights ago . Food was fabulous and the service excellent. Will definitely come back when next visiting the area. Highly recommended *****

From the real fire that was so welcoming on the wettest coldest night of the year. To the very friendly staff to the amazing food. The garlic bread and sauce on my pasta were the best I have ever tasted. Can definitely recommend eating here.

We love this place; the food is great and reasonably priced. We've been 3 times now and it's always good. The only drawback for me is the steep stairs :-)

Visited the restaurant whilst on our honeymoon, the staff were super friendly and smiley, the food was nice, unfortunately our meal was disturbed by a baby crying and screaming constantly which isn’t the restaurants fault. I would like to visit again

Everything about Giannis was excellent! The meal was enjoyed at a relaxed pace, as good Italian food should be enjoyed, and the service was outstanding! As for the food…delicious, and very reasonably priced. For a shared starter, 2 mains, and a bottle of wine, we paid £50. Plus, there was an extensive separate vegan menu - I was spoilt for choice!

Just an average Italian - with some over priced food - Tomatoe and onion salad came with 6 sliced tomatoes with a sprinkle of onions £3.99 come on. All the staff seemed miserable and pre occupied except one member who was smiley all the time.

We went and had to wait as it was booked full, but we were very glad we waited. My wife and I are vegans, and there was a separate vegan menu that had a lot of options l. We had two pizzas and they were both delicious - vegan pizza cheese is often hit or miss but this cheese was fantastic, and the crust was great too. Can’t wait to be back! 🍕 🌱

We were extremely surprised by this restaurant. The food was excellent and couldn’t fault anything. Would highly recommend if going to Scarborough.

It was our 1st wedding anniversary, so we thought of Giannis and we were not disappointed. Right from the start we were greeted by a smiling face and our drinks and food orders taken by the most lovely and attentive waiter (Alessandro) what a credit to the restaurant he is! My wife had the chicken in the mushroom sauce with vegetables - it was devine. I had the fillet steak with peppercorn sauce - it was up there with the best steaks I've ever eaten. Try this place, you'll love it.

I went to this restaurant yesterday and to my surprise the service was awful. Unfortunately the waitress cleaned my table with a filthy cloth from the bin, they spoke to me poorly and were rude. The salt and oil containers were dirty and sticky. We were waiting far too long for our dishes and the food quality was very poor for the price

Absolutely loved it as did all of our group. We had a couple of cocktails which were great and then started on the food . It was busy as I believe it usually is amd it took about 25 mins from ordering to the food coming out which is fine by me I don't like it when you're rushed in and out of a restaurant. Food was fantastic and service good with the staff being social and talkative but not overly so that they are in your face . Overall a fantastic experience and I will definitely visit again when next in scarborough.

Perfect place with atmosphere. Excellent quality and quantity and presentation of food.. I have eaten in plenty of Italian restaurants in Leeds, Harrogate and York - this is so far the best and I will be returning. Highly recommended but you will have to book.

Very good Italian restaurant. Taste as well as the portion size was amazing. Had to wait 30 minutes even on Thursday but it was worth it. One of the waiter was bit rude but the other one was very helpful and smiling. The ambience is really beautiful and nice. Will definitely visit again.

Excellent menu and quality food, good service in a Victorian house

Absolutely fantastic!! From the minute we walked in, the staff were all smiling and welcoming. We were showed to our seat. We shared a ham and mushroom pizza to start with, absolutely amazing and very tasty. My husband had steak and I had chicken, they were so delicious and tender, it went lovely with the peppercorn sauce we enjoyed every single mouthful. The chips… well they were the best we’ve ever had from all the restaurants we’ve tried in Scarborough. We had rocket and Parmesan salad and tomato and red onion salad which we shared, they were delicious and very well presented. We had no room after our meal for a dessert which was a shame, the meal filled us up so much, portion sizes were spot on. I can honestly say that we throughly enjoyed our meal and the service, there was nothing to fault at all. Thank you to you all, we live in Scarborough so we will definitely be back soon.

Went here with a couple friends. The staff were absolutely wonderful getting us seated and taking our orders. The starters were amazing and came out very quickly. Then whilst waiting for our mains one of the brilliant staff Alex said he would ask the chef Pedro to stuff the calzone full of the toppings I ordered. When it arrived I was starstruck by its size. Even as a guy who can eat alot I must say I struggled! It also tasted amazing and is probably one of the best calzones i have ever had. My friends loved their meals aswell and overall was an amazing experience, would highly recommend.

We booked this restaurant whilst staying in Scarborough for the weekend and so glad we did. I'm a creature of habit when I go to Italian restaurants and often opt for lasagna, I have to say this was one of, if not the best lasagna I've had at an Italian restaurant and I've been to many.

Came here last week and ordered lasagna. I have eaten in numerous Italian restaurants in England but this surpassed ALL of them.Every mouthful was gorgeous from start to finish and there was plenty of it!! Italian food of the highest quality just the way it should be, in lovely surroundings , served by very attentive staff.WELL DONE!!!!

Fantastic food and great service!! Didn’t book and the restaurant was so full, however let us sit outside with heater and blankets, not that they were needed but nice touch. Staff got us a table after about 20 minutes and were very attentive even though they didn’t stop!! Couldn’t recommend more

I would like to give my utmost and genuine thanks to the staff at Gianni’s for making my birthday meal a very special night out. There were 10 of us, some with dietary requirements and others with allergies and every length was taken to confirm these items with the kitchen. The food was fantastic, I recommend the Kiev Calzone (bring your appetite!!) and limoncello cheesecake with cherry ice cream, and absolutely amazing night, thank you to all the staff!!

My partner rang your restaurant 8 times Saturday (22/06/24) from 4pm - 8pm to hopefully book a table and no-one answered at all. 🙄🤨 so therefore decided to just turn up and hope that we were able to get a table ( We walked 30 minutes from our b&b might I add). When we arrived, there was a young gent on the bar who advised us that 'unfortunately you were booked up' he didn't check to see if he could just squeeze the two of us in at some point during the evening even if it had meant us going and having to come back but this wasn't offered to us!. When we advised him of how we had been ringing 8 times his response was 'We don't answer the phone when busy' which was not busy at the bar when we arrived and I'm sure someone is around to answer the phone otherwise how are you supposed to book a table. Very disappointing service from several times of trying to get through on the phone and frustratingly no one answering to walking 30 minutes to get there and turned away without even trying to check if we could be fitted in anywhere throughout the night. This is a shame as we were recommended your restaurant and read from your reviews how good the food is. Maybe if we're in Scarborough again sometime I will try to ring a month in advance if anyone cares to answer the phone or just not bother now and go elsewhere as I feel this is bad service.

Food was top class. Had the sharing plate for starter and the mussels for main. Both were delicious.
