visited today with a friend had chips and peas and the drink and it was reasonably priced. Food was cooked. loverly best fish and chips. I have had in a very very long time. will definitely be returning when we are in the area again well done

I have visited this fish bar for years and regularly travel 10 + miles to it , never again grey fish loads of bad chips and curry sauce that was sweet??!!!we were so disappointed with it that I asked another customer if it had changed hands, it had . What a shame

I arranged our pre Christmas lunch for retired work friends, eight of us arrived at the restaurant and two reserved tables were waiting for us. Our meals arrived on the time book (1 pm) the food was absolutely superb, both fish and the chips cooked to perfection. So impressed we all decided to come again in December 2024! A big thanks to all At Nik’s, the food and service was absolutely wonderful. We wish Nik, and all his staff, A Happy Christmas, and a Happy and Healthy, and prosperous 2024!

Chips were hot, homemade fish cake actually tasted of fish( they usually don't) and was delicious. Seemed efficiently managed , great staff on counter.

Become very expensive for so little this is unfair ripping off the customers was charged over £10 for basic fish n chips

I'm really surprised with the negative reviews. We always used to use the other chippy in town but out child has allergies so we have to be careful what we order now. Nik's was able to provide me with a folder of allergen information which I was really impressed with and took away a lot of worry for us. We think the quality is great too. Only grumble is my last cod had a few bones in.

We have been visiting George's for many years. Since George left and handed over to his grandson, we felt the standard had dropped and the jury has been out. During this latest vist the chips were very poor quality, lots of black bits and we both ended up leaving a load of chips as they were not edible. I appreciate that it is always possible to have a bad batch but reading some of the other comments on this review site has made me realise the problem is with the supply and Nik would prefer to deal with a cheaper supplier to retain a higher profit margin. When we went to pay we said the chips were not good and we just got a bland message about trying to pick the black ones out but were still charged full price. I am sad to say, it is the end of an era for me now and this is the last time I will be contributing to Nik's profits.

Poor quality chips, they had lots of eyes and skin on, could only eat 50%. Also we ordered meals one with 2 fish guotions and 1 with 3 guotions, we were given only 3 guotions, which seemed like they had been made for a while. I would not go again.

To Georges Grandson, I remember when Georges started in Belper, consider you have let the side down. We have noticed, in our opinion the pre packed potatoes delivered to your shop have gone down hill in quality. So many `black eyes' in the potatoes, that you need to sort out the better chips to eat! We considered the chips bought on the 10th May dreadful. Fish usually reasonable, today very oily. You need to be on site and check the quality!!!

Nowhere near as good as it was when it was George’s. The last two times we have been in for takeaway we got home to part of the order missing (on one occasion one of the kids meals). Today the chips were 50% black and really unappealing. I think we’ll not return.

Great value lovely fish and chips great service from an overworked waitress working solo. Need to bring your own brown sauce if that’s your preference but otherwise a perfect meal.

Very disappointed with staffs attitude/service, the shop is advertised as being open to 21.00 on a Sunday and we travelled a fair distance to order fish and chips for us both as have enjoyed it before, we arrived at 20.35 i.e 25 minutes before their advertised closing time and requested large haddock and chips to be told that they had run out of haddock, i then requested a large cod and chips to be told that they had run out of cod as well !. It became pretty evident, as they were already cleaning out the warming case, that they were unwilling to put a fish of any kind into the frier and wanted to get away, I would have thought that if opening was advertised until 21.00 you should be able to order and assuming it would be cooked before then be served and cleaning down would occur after this time.

Really poor service and won’t be going back again! Seated for over 20 minutes without having our order taken. Table sticky, menu stuck to it, prices gone through the roof. What has happened to this restaurant? It use to be brilliant.

Went to George’s Belper today for fish & chips at 3.45pm. There were 3 tables already seated, 2 of which had their food, 3rd was supplied within a few minutes. We had been sat at our table for 15, still not served when a local couple came in and were seated. Waited another 5 minutes after which the waitress served the local couple completely ignoring us!At this point we got up and left in disgust!!This used to be our favourite fish & chip shop and we visited regularly. Although prices have gone through the roof we wanted to support them through this period but following this we will not be returning. TrueType shocking service and not as it was before.

Went to the Belper restaurant today with 2 friends, both who had been regulars pre lockdown. Both could not believe how George’s could advertise their lunch as special. It was virtually the same price as other meals with the previous included cup of tea and bread and butter being charged extra!!!!King Street Fish bar, here we come.

Can't order set meals anymore everything has to be separate because of covid ? £7 meal now £10 you can pay cash or card but we can't give you loyalty points on your card because of covid , using covid to hike your price is not acceptable

Went Friday evening, 6:30pm. Surprised there was no one in the restaurant but now understand why!! Floor was dirty with spilled food. Tables were really 'sticky' & unpleasant, so much so the menu & serviette stuck to them! Was told it was the cleaning material they used on the tables! General decor was tatty with pictures missing from walls but still with rawplugs in wall. Ordered large cod chips & peas and scampi & chips with salad. They didn't have any bread & butter, no pickled cucumbers & no longer licensed! When the food arrived there were hardly any chips with the scampi (15 to be precise!) & although the waiter did get me some more, he said that what I had been served was the standard portion with scampi! Now, on saying the above, the food was actually ok so no complaint on quality. But in relation to portion size & cost, their takeaway is much better value for money. Restaurant meals are smaller & more money - we feel ripped off!! A sad demise of what had always been a nice fish & chip restaurant. Won't be going again. Perhaps someone from George's Tradition HO should give them a visit......

My word the restaurant prices have gone up We reckon as much as £ 3 for a meal and drink each .We were the only people in on a Saturday lunch .I know things are tough for businesses but they are hard for people whose wages have been cut too.

George’s do Gluten Free fish and chips on a Sunday, and it’s super tasty. Feel ever so grateful whenever chains like this offer these options. Always have a great experience in the Belper restaurant - fast and friendly service.So if you suffer from gluten intolerance and don’t fancy cooking on a Sunday, definitely get down to George’s, we do it regularly!

Used to be the best around - fresh fish, crispy batter great chips - has steadily gone down in quality- last try tonight- greasy mushy stuck together chips that smelled of old oil, fish batter soggy- never going there again and that is a shame.

I visited George’s Tradition in March 2021. I ordered a large cod chips and peas.To be fair I thought the food was good quality tasted nice and fresh. My issue is value for money. The meal cost £7.85, the fish was not large just a small piece of fish, small portion of chips.Not good value for money I’m afraid. There are other venues in the locality of equal quality that provide far more generous portions for the same price.

Orded 2 X small cod deals at £6.20 each. 5/2/2021 Fish more batter than fish,few chips which were burnt and the peas mainly water. Very poor. They think they can get away with this type of service when orders are packed without the customer being there. Won't bother in the future, there are other better value for money establishment in belper.

Back to Click and Collect because of Tier3 restrictions, George's always delivers on portion size, taste and great value with excellent service from the staff.

Our large cod and chips portion contained the smallest piece of fish I have ever seen and our curry sauce was gravy! Too far to return it but when contacted them the didn't bother to reply. The staff had a very 'don't care' attitude.Won't be back. Chip shop in Duffield is much better.

Ordered fish and chips. Didn't bother with click and collect. Took around 6 min to prepare even when cooking scampi to order. Very nice. Large portions.

Absolutely disgusted at the service I received at Belper today, when I state a time on click and collect, I expect a simple order of cod and chips to be ready for that time. Not 16 minutes after the allotted time. I could understand it if it was busy but the shop was empty, except for 2 other people waiting outside. The staff behind the counter didn't seem bothered, it was a case of you have your chips now, of you go. The wait also cost me another 60p in the car park, as my time had ran out. I could have understood it, if it was a complicated order of several different meals, but when I place the order online, it asks you to state the time you require, so a simple order of cod and chips, ( nothing else ) should have posed no problems.I have sent George's a message online, to tell them how disgusted I was, and they have seen the message and not replied, so are they bothered, obviously not.

Visited today (11th September) for a family lunch of fish and chips. Very very please with our lunch every one enjoyed it. Social distancing, clean, friendly staff, waiting times we’re all spot on. Will 100% be visiting again soon. Keep up the good work all the staff at Belper

The place itself is really nice with social distancing markers and shielding inside. The cardbaord boxes that the fish and chips come in is a really good touch but then the curry sauce cam out in polystyrene!Chips were ok but a little anemic and the curry sauce again was ok , had better for sure.

We stopped here for lunch and both had the fish and chips. They were the best we have ever had. The batter was so light and crispy and the chips also not greasy and piping hot. The young lady working there was so kind and friendly. If we lived here it would be our regular spot.

Our first fish & chips since lock down. Enjoyed a great fish and chip supper using their easy to use click and collect service. All very well organised and 'safe'. Just wish people would follow the instructions and not turn up before their selected collection time!!......turning up fifteen minutes plus early and standing around outsde makes it difficult for those of us following George's instructions......

Fur the first time since the crisis started we took advantage of click and collect service offered at this establishment. Using the app was easy and once the order was placed confirmation was quick. I ordered our meal for 440pm. I got there 5 mins early. At 440 the meal was passed to me boxed and bagged ready to go.Food was hot with lovely fresh fish in excellent batter. No loss of quality at all. Indeed I commented that ordering it this way is actually quicker.It was quiet though.Excellent service start to finish topped with the usual high quality fish n chips. Well done.

Click & Collect for fantastic Fish & Chips works easily and very efficiently, placed the order travelling back from Carsington for a 13:00 collection, parked up and was handed our collection at 13:00, great quality food as always.

Belper shop.No problem with the food and very appreciative of the Click & Collect Service when it was introduced, the website functioned well, and the food was also ready on time. However, I was disappointed on three consecutive occasions, when my order was for four households, ours and three elderly peoples, at different locations. The order was placed on the website and it asks if you have any requests....for three weeks running, I asked for the orders to be labelled, and this was never done, meaning I had to open the orders prior to delivery, to try and determine whose was whose, not ideal during the Coronavirus pandemic! It’s also impossible to distinguish between cod and haddock and sometimes between a large and regular fish. Also, on one of those occasions, I was two meals short but fortunately discovered that in Belper, at the first drop off, before our journey home to Lea. I filled in the feedback request form about its service around May 10th, and chased it up three weeks later and have still heard nothing from the company, even though it says they reply in about two weeks! I have not used Georges since. I decided to patient as I did not want to leave negative feedback but unfortunately a response has not been forthcoming.

Click and collect was ready when I got there . Really enjoyed the fish and chips and as a treat we are them out of the box. NO WASHING UP.

Lockdown, online order and collection worked a treat, easy to order from extensive menu, order email received showing order and online payment, parked outside, ordered piping hot and ready on time, quality food, good portions will easily be using again.

Having visited Georges on numerous occasions for at least 10 years our visit this week left a lot to be desired , the fish was very small , my husband had the large haddock and it was no bigger than my ' pensioners special ' , not good quality , chips were greasy . The waitress was very loud , no objections to be called ' my lovely ' but was way over the top when she said it at the top of her voice at every opportunity to everyone . Sadly we will not be visiting again .

Have always enjoyed the fish and chips here but as we live some distance away we only visit twice a year en route home from a trip into Derbyshire. The large haddock has definitely shrunk in size. Both fish and chips were greasy and were probably cooked at too low a temperature. Mushy peas however were delicious.

Visited here recently. Nice inside, as was service. Only negatives were that small f&c were smaller than other places (Whitbys small f&c are larger for same price) and curry sauce was watery.

Stopped on the way home for a takeaway - we are no experts at fish and chip restaurants, but we found the experience disappointing.

Looking for really great fish and chips and enormous portions? This is the one. Takeaway or eat in restaurant. Highly recommend.

We were served quickly. The fish was slightly dry,possibly having been in the hot cabinet for a while. Chips were nicely coloured but just a little bit greasy for my liking. Premises clean and tidy.

Really excellent fish and chips. Since I have been here, fish and chips at other places is disappointing. The fish is fresh and very tasty, the batter is light. The staff are excellently friendly both here at also at the Ilkeston branch.

Brought fish and chips at opening time so didn’t have to wait,well wish I had not bothered,so disappointed,chips were cold and fish was cold and batter hard and very little white fish inside the batter,won’t be going there again.

Now... I have been a regular at George’s tradition and up till about 2 weeks ago I loved it I have now abandoned it let me tell you why. So... I picked up some nice chips with a large sausage and a drink of Fentimans, I was with my husband and he drove me to Morrison’s, while he went inside Morrison’s I opened my chips and began to eat, then I noticed the biggest fly ever! While I was locked in the car I couldn’t open the windows or door to chuck it out I was stuck there with it. It had crawled all over my chips which were very very dry by the way, so I had to shut my takeaway box and wait for my husband because I didn’t dare eat another one of those chips because they had probably had eggs laid on them by that humongous fly. It was a terrible experience and as a local in Belper I’m afraid I now am going to the Fish bar on king street. George’s an apology is needed and it would hardly suffice!

Called in for solids during The Amber Valley beer festival weekend. We sat in the restaurant and had a fabulous lunch. Their handmade fish cakes in batter really hit the spot . Fast friendly service and decent prices.

Lovely home made fish cakes that tasted just like the ones i had as a child. Good non greasy chips completed a great meal. We visit George’s every year when we stay in Derbyshire and always enjoy a consistently good takeaway.

We have not been to George’s for a couple of years and used to come here all the time, but we were not very impressed. I ordered a large fish with chips and it was more like a mini fish, very thin, more batter than fish. The batter was good as was the chips but please we want a thicker piece of fish. Not sure we’ll be back any time soon.

My husband bought me home a chip cob and there was 21 small chips inside, you couldn't even see 1 chip poking out of the cob. Perfect if you are on a diet but I am 9 months pregnant and was heart broken!!!

We called in on the off chance around 1pm on a Saturday afternoon. Me and my husband ordered 2 pensioners specials which included 2 lots of fish and chips, mushy peas, tartar sauce, wholemeal bread and a pot of tea for 2. The food was fresh and delicious with good size portions. We had to wait a little while as the food was cooked fresh next door but it was worth the wait. Good value for money and would recommend. We will definitely be returning.

Great but small restaurant and takeaway fish and chip shop in the heart of Belper. Recommended for its high quality fish and well cooked chips. The service is fast and friendly.

I ordered a large gluten free cod with chips and 1x large mushy peas and my partner ordered a large pie and chips with 1x large mushy peas and 1x large gravy (we didn’t receive the gravy).

I have been going to Georges in belper since i can remember. Im honestly sad to say i wont be going back. For the last few years now things have been going down hill. Soggy under cooked chips, i had a batterd sausage which tasted of fish. That says to me the sauages have been fryed in the fish fryer so i hope theres no pescatarian customers as you are probably eating meat now. If you fancy fish and chips go to king street fish bar. Much better. Can you remember the time when you were queueing outside georges for 20 mins before you got served? This is what king street fish bar looks like now. You do the math.

Had a takeaway at 8 PM Sunday evening. Portions were small and chips were soggy. Fish was also soggy and tasteless and the portion of peas was tiny. Indeed there was nothing to commend it. This establishment was ok until a year or so ago but seems to have gone downhill. Last time we went we ordered fish and chips for 8 people and after standing for 20 minutes and watching everyone else get served they admitted they had forgotten the order. Again the quality was rock bottom. Last time.

Called for some fish and chips today. Best I’ve had for some time. It’s nice to see you get a recyclable box with your meal as well. Just one thing though ditch the plastic forks and get some wooden ones, it’s good for the planet you know !!!

The other evening I popped into Georges Traditions at Belper for Haddock, Chips and Mushy Peas for my wife and I. We've been going to George's for years. The quality is always top notch and matched by excellent service. On this occasion though I was shocked to be told there was no Haddock. George's had fell foul to its reputation and simply run out. Every cloud has a silver lining though. I tried the Hake, a new addition to the menu. I am so glad I did. Wonderful sweet tasting fish served as two decent sized battered fillets. Lovely fish enough to take me wat from Haddock.

i have visited georges belper for many years and this by far is the best shop in the chain as its well staffed and the food is excellent.

George's fish and chips.....you would think they would keep both haddock and cod!!! No. We went for a birthday treat asking for haddock. Sorry we don't have any haddock left. This was about 4pm Sunday tea time.

Always had lovely food from here, but called last night and the peas were inedible. Rock hard, and had the consistency of water. The service was quick, but not in a good way. It seemed like the staff were having some sort of race against each other. Maybe concentrate on producing decent food, instead of trying to rush the service instead.

Went to George s in Belper at around 2150 staff didn’t seem interested and didn’t know the servers name but the chips were black in Color soggy and Luke warm and the roll was dry

Popped in on Xmas eve and had the 'Pensioners' Fish and chips x 2. Fish and Batter were perfect. Chips just right and looks like home made bread. Absolutely spot on

Despite what people tell you this original George’s remains the best chippy around. We are local and normally take away but we are in on this occasion. Fish is fab batter is light and crispy. Best chippy around.

Fast, friendly service with a wide menu. Great chips, good portion size and ‘real’ chicken nuggets which are huge and delicious!

Its back as my favourite Chip shop, its always popular an a great pit-stop while on a drinking session to get some chips, great chip shop menu served by excellent staff.

Popped in one night for some sit down fish and chips. The Haddock was absolutely beautiful and the batter light and crispy. Definitely room for improvement on the service but it was friendly enough just very laid back.
