Locked out at night, faced with velour thrones, a plinth bath, and the world’s saddest breakfast. Boutique in name only—possibly a performance art piece. Guests not included

As previously mentioned everything appeared to be shop bought. Budget value thin sliced ham as an example. Can't fault the staff or service provided. Afternoon tea is a very competitive market, the hotel could do so much better given its history and aesthetics appearance. We were seated in what appeared to be the sun terrace in a glass fronted conservatory with a retractable roof which over looked a small courtyard. Nice comfortable and airy. Let down slightly by the untidy courtyard edges.

Writing on behalf of my parents who booked for afternoon tea... Purchased a Groupon voucher £29.95 with procecco for them as a gift... they've had a few over the years!! Great place .. relaxed atmosphere and lovely staff ... Shop bought cakes ? Mr kipling cakes cut in half .. egg custards cut in half .. packet ham ... not what you'd expect at a afternoon tea ... also dirty cups.

Writing on behalf of my parents who came for afternoon tea... I bought this from Groupon as a gift £29.95 ... Lovely venue and friendly staff .. relaxed atmosphere.. Shop bought cakes ? Mr kipling cakes cut in half .. egg custards cut in half ... packet ham for the sandwiches? My parents have had a fair few afternoon teas and this was not worth the money for the quality of food presented to them.

No restaurant open all week which wasn't on the booking.com add, rooms very unkept, sticky carpets and suspicious red staining on walls/ table.. Holes in the walls roughly plugged with filler and not finished off, fire evac plan fell off the wall and was behind the night stand.. The bathroom was the best part of the room!! I was staying due to work, my job was cancelled for the rest of the week and i was asked to travel 150 miles south for another job so i attempted to cancel, and even showed the manager the email from my head office regarding this.. i went through booking to try and have the fees for the rest of the week waived, but this was declined by the manager. I should not have had to pay for the rest of the stay if i wasn't even in the same town as the hotel!! WOULD NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN.

Booked an afternoon tea with a Groupon. Lovely place, lots of character. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Sandwiches were fresh and tasty and ok, cakes shop bought but scones with jam and cream were delicious. Can't fault it for the price, we really enjoyed it.

Recently came here for afternoon tea, 1 person asked for a decaf coffee due to health issues, served a decaf tea, everyone's drinks were lukewarm, sandwiches were very small portions and hardly any filling, scones were dry and when tried to spread jam on them, the scones fell apart. I will not be returning and won't be recommending. Loads better afternoon teas out there. This was very disappointing.

What can I say? This is advertised as a luxury afternoon tea. There is nothing luxury about it. The setting is a tiled conservatory which is cold and bland and has a working kitchen in it!!! The food consisted of sandwiches using the cheapest bread and minimal fillings, cheap savouries and a poor selection of shop bought pastries. Once served, the staff never came back to our table to ask if everything was ok or if we needed anything, and we were the only customers!!! Sadly, an experience to forget. I do not recommend this venue for afternoon tea.

I had bought a Groupon Afternoon tea voucher . The venue was pleasant , toilets clean and the gentleman in charge was knowledgeable about the history of the building . The entrance , through a conservatory door , however , was open plan and the counter tops were stacked with dirty dishes. Not a good first impression. I gessed that this was where the pots were washed but it also looked like it wa s the breakfast area as there was a toaster and kettle on show. Unfortunately , the afternoon tea itself was very, very poor . The food consisted of a small tray of small sandwich triangles, ham, cheese , egg and tuna . The two scones were small and stale . Mass produced . The savouries were a couple of small bite- size Scotch egg things and two very small pieces of sausage roll . Mass produced , value range products . The cakes were very odd. Value range jam tart , custard tart and mini battern burg . One of each , cut into two halves to serve two people . Again, cheap, value range manufactured products There was also one bite size brownie , again cut into two pieces . The food was what would be served at a children's tea party , not as an afternoon tea . No luxury at all despite the description on the advert and voucher ., A few salad leaves and tiny pieces of strawberry decorated the stand. We also got one tiny pot of cream . one butter pat and a tiny pot of jam between two. We had to ask for the jam to be changed as it was dirty . It looked like a piece of string was in the pot . The cups were also a bit grubby. The tea came in a pot and we asked for some hot water . Neither were warm. The prosecco was one small bottle served between two small flute glasses, the extra bit left in the botttle remained on the bar! We chose not to eat very much as it was not appetising and we put the cakes into a box but threw them away on leaving the venue . Not a good experience at all . This was supposed to be worth £50 . The voucher cost me £25 . Value of food served was probably about £4 .

We came for luxury afternoon tea, this wasn't even standard quality. The place was freezing, we never took off our coats, sandwiches are where the 2 stars come from, the rest was embarrassing, Everything cut in half (jam tart, eclair, egg custard etc,) all cheap supermarket items, nothing other than sandwiches were made on the premises. Scones rock hard how can you have afternoon tea without fresh scones?, we left over half of what was there. Even the coffee wasn't hot! No way was this ever priced at almost £50. Worst one we've ever had. Shame because we tend to use a Groupon first then return to the venues to try other items, we definitely wouldn't go back here for anything. I'm so glad I didn't gift this one to anyone. I should've read the reviews on here before buying the voucher but the reviews on groupon are good (weirdly.)

This was by far the worst cream tea I have ever had. It was all cheap products like supermarket own brands. Some were cut in half. I could have easily made this myself. This is something I would do for a child's party. Only one tea and coffee was served and the coffee came in a tea pot with a lid that didn't fit.Yes it was a Groupon and only cost £25 pounds. If I'd have paid 49.99 for this I would have been devastated. This was supposed to be a nice treat for me and my partner. We visited this place in the past for a steak dinner and it was beautiful with the fire on. It's still a nice building other than it was cold . Shame about the food now new owners have taken over we won't be going back.

We visited here as looking at the website the place looked a lovely little gem in Rotherham. We booked luxury afternoon tea ( via Groupon but value should have been £49.95 which was for two with Prosecco) so with this in mind it looked a lovely looking place we had high hopes for the tea. Unfortunately there was nothing luxury about the tea. I appreciate we booked via Groupon but expecting a luxury afternoon tea as stated, maybe we shouldn’t have. The tea was of very low quality / poor in fact and something you would expect to eat at a children’s tea party. Shop bought produce ( all of value quality, especially the scones, which usually on a tea would be one of the highlights, defiantly not) we were served a very cheap dry scone, an eclair cut in two, a jam tart cut in two, value mr Kipling like slices cut in two, a brownie ( that was actually the only nice thing) a mini scotch egg, sausage roll and quarter of a small pork pie ( all that looked to be asdas 2 for £3.50 party food range) Overall a massive let down, for us and the place serving, as if they think this is luxury I dread to have something there that isn’t labelled luxury! All ok for a low quality kids tea, but not for a ‘luxury’ afternoon tea as described. When you go for afternoon tea, you expect a good standard of food, a treat, not what was received. Very disappointed in the ‘luxury’ offering

Visited today for afternoon tea, part of my birthday present. Easy to find location with sat nav! Mid town with own car park, validation required at reception. Greated by Amanda who was very welcoming and friendly. Shown to our table right under the heater which was perfect for me! Amanda bought out our stand of food which looked amazing then a separate plate of samwhiches! Great choices for both of us. Lovely selection of other savouries along with cakes and scones. We couldn't manage it all or the prosecco so we're given a container to bring the food home. Mini bottles of prosecco were not open so easy to pop in bag. Food menu looked great and so did the Sunday roast! Will definitely be back again. Thanks again Amanda!

The George Wright Hotel is located in the heart of Rotherham and boasts a remarkable 400-year history, showcasing stunning original features that have been beautifully renovated to a high standard. In my opinion, this hotel has the potential to be one of the finest in the region. However, the recent upgrades and renovations by the new owner seem to lack the necessary attention, reflecting the broader decline in Rotherham, where cost-cutting appears to be the primary concern. The presidential suite, the most opulent room in the hotel, initially impresses with its design tailored for honeymooners and couples seeking a romantic getaway. It features a period-style bath that fits two, located within the bedroom, alongside a separate ensuite bathroom with a wet room. The king-size bed is adorned with a chandelier and spotlights, offering views of the town and courtyard through the window blinds. In the bedroom, you'll find a full-length mirror, a clothing rack, and an armchair, while tea and coffee are served on a desk with an additional chair. The staff at the hotel are exceptionally friendly, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A real fire is lit most days, providing a cozy nook within the hotel. However, many original features are not complemented by equally high-quality furnishings, which detracts from the overall ambiance and fails to highlight the building's unique character. Breakfast is served in a pleasant restaurant surrounded by windows, which opens up to a courtyard with outdoor seating and heating for enjoyable evenings. At the back of the property, there is a large marquee designated for guests who wish to smoke. This hotel holds tremendous potential, but there needs to be a shift in attitude towards service. Currently, staff members often sit with paying guests during their shifts, and delivery drivers use the same entrance as patrons, disrupting the dining experience. A better coordination of these activities is essential. With some thoughtful changes, this hotel could truly shine by enhancing service and presentation. There are numerous pieces of unused equipment and furniture visible in the open that should be stored away to improve the overall impression. While discounted rates offer great value for a stay, the full price falls short of expectations. If improvements in service and an awareness of how to create an exceptional environment are implemented, this hotel could become outstanding; as it stands now, it hovers between fair and satisfactory.

Perfect start to a date night to the new cinema. We hadn’t booked but they were happy to accommodate our walk in request. Table for two for an evening meal before heading off to try the new cinema. The welcome was warm and genuine, the food freshly cooked but promptly served. Really relaxed atmosphere and great service. I opted for a pint of Moonshine, a citrusy pale ale served with a large slice of orange on the top. Who knew orange and beer worked but trust me it does. The manager introduced himself at the end of the meal and genuinely cared that we had enjoyed ourselves. You even get that warm fuzzy feeling that comes from supporting a great local independent business. Well done and than you Steve @ Louise

This could be a really lovely hotel but there were so many things wrong with my stay - only one person on duty when I arrived. On A SATURDAY night-m. She was checking people in AND cooking for the ‘restaurant’. As a result she wasn’t able to process my check in effectively. Although she was very lovely it all felt a bit like I was a hassle. The floors and walls around the hotel are very grubby although my room was clean. The lighting throughout is terrible so the place feels cold and dingy when you arrive. My room, although clean, was tiny with paper thin walls. The flat/building opposite could see directly into my room. The terrace outside my room has traffic of people outside who felt like they were in my room. I could hear the TV (and conversation!) in the next room. The bed was the smallest double bed I’ve ever seen in a hotel. The room was very very basic. Just bed. Chair and bathroom. No table to work at or do makeup etc. No cupboards. No art or anything to warm the bleak walls. The restaurant was cold and the kitchen was literally INSIDE the dining room. It’s the strangest experience. The bar was closed and lights off in the evening (did I say it was a Saturday ?) No veggie option for breakfast which made the morning start a bit rubbish. Despite me telling them the night before! It could be so lovely but it just misses the mark entirely. The 2 staff I met - one on Saturday and 1 on Saturday were very lovely though! That’s important to note. I know the room was pretty cheap to book but I will not be coming back. I felt like someone was playing a cheap joke! It’s not a boutique hotel at all

A beautiful hidden gem in the heart of Rotherham. My cousin and I stayed for one night, on a trip to visit our aunt, and we were delighted with the hotel. It has a good sized car park, which is always helpful, particularly in a town centre. The building is beautiful and makes a great first impression. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The manager, Bashar, was particularly helpful in suggesting a place to eat in the evening. Our room was spacious and stylish and the beds were very comfortable. We will definitely be returning.

Stayed here for one night for a concert at the Utilita Arena, and got the room for a very good price considering we booked 5 days before a sold out show. Was really easy to get to the arena by a quick 15 minute uber too. Check in was very easy, staff were very friendly and helpful and we got straight into our room. The room itself was pretty nice, very comfy bed, great shower and lots of space. A few areas were a bit dusty and there was some mould around the bathroom extractor fan, but otherwise it was all very clean and tidy. At around 8am we could hear some very loud drilling in the building which woke us up, and we could hear other guests talking through the walls, so our sleep wasn’t great after that unfortunately. Luckily they offer check out time up to 11am, so we had plenty of time to get ready. Can’t speak for the breakfast as we chose not to have this, but it all looked great. Overall, we were happy with our stay despite a few little bits here and there, and would definitely recommend this hotel!

Great pub for food, just make sure to book in advance as it can be busy. Its a little pricey compared to the other local pubs so I would only come here for the food, or one/two drinks if we are planning on moving. The outside beer garden is pretty average, not much of a garden, but it does have a large carpark, again ideal for going for a meal here.
