7.45pm on a Saturday night. Was told Chef was leaving now and there was a limited menu. Ordered a fish butty. Not quite what I wanted but limited menu now. The fish wasn't cooked properly. Grey and translucent. I said ' am happy to pay for it and don't want anything else. ' The Landlady stuck her fingers in it and rubbed the fish between her fingers in front of me. No .' it's overcooked she said. Disgusting. No customer acknowledgement or even nicety. I Asked to pay and waited . Offered some discount. Courtesy and etiquette not found here.

I can confirm all the other reviews saying how welcoming and lovely the hosts are here. We were staying at the YHA and are really glad we came here for dinner. Food is fantastic; the breads and olives amazing and mains delicious. Children are well catered for and excellent food for them as well. It gets busy, unsurprisingly, so do book. Great value for money and the beer is top notch as well.

Wow! What a find! Great staff. Great fish dishes that are restaurant quality and reasonably priced. The best fish we have eaten, beautifully presented with a lot of thought put into what is on your plate. Same with the desserts. Picturesque location. The pub has a lot of charm and the garden overlooks the castle. Interesting selection of beers. Try it, don't miss out. There is also a good deli shop opposite.

Great pub with atmosphere. We shared a fish platter - it was generous with prawns, crab, smoked salmon, gravalax and mackerel all beautifully presented and the accompanying soda bread scones were just delicious. Our hosts were both trained chefs - and it showed. Loved everything about it.Big thanks

What a great pub with fantastic Staff. Tim, Pat and Ian are doing a great job in keeping this local Pub going. St. Briavels would be a much poorer place without this pub. I should know, I'm originally from The Forest of Dean (check the gravestones in the local Church) and have seen what happens to the Villages when the Pub closes. Love it here, already stayed here twice this year and going again soon. The food is amazing, Tim and Pat are first class Chef's and nothing is too much trouble. There are lots of locals that go in and plenty of people who are just passing through. I sit in the beer garden a lot (I am a wheelchair user) and they are always very complimentary about the food and Staff. Shame they do not all pass it on. I have very limited walking but there is always someone on hand to help me up the stairs without being patronising. They also put on live acts. Amazing. I was sat, as usual, with a lot of locals on Sunday 16th June and we also invited some who were staying locally to join us. Topaz was playing, with lovely local, Dalton on the drums and we all had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Dalton couldn't show us his full potential as he was conscious of keeping the noise down but I'm sure no one local would have complained - the pub has been there for donkey's years, far longer than any of us. Very much appreciate all the support I got as it would have been my late Husband, Vic Faulkner's 80th birthday. You get more than good food and excellent service at The George, you get hugs too.

My husband and I were house/pet sitting in St Briavels when we walked to the village to check out the local pub. Since it’s pretty much the only game in town, we weren’t expecting much. Boy, we’re we wrong. Amazing, local, fresh, farm to table food, Welcoming owners and guests. Cool, old building that was built a looooong time ago. We wished we had more time in this town to better experience the food and the people. I had seafood both nights and my husband had a burger the second night. (I forget what he had the first night) The seafood was so fresh and the veggies were cooked just so!! My husbands burger was huge. We never get desert but one customer talked us into it. No regrets!! Just as good as the rest of the meal. All this for a reasonable price. We live in the US but trust that we will be back.

Returned after previous visits last Summer. The most friendly, welcoming and accommodating of hosts. Great place to stop when cycling as can sit out and keep an eye on the bikes. Never have we gone somewhere where the member of staff actually reduced the price of a meal because the accompanying chips were not required (diabetic so no carb diet). Generous portions of freshly home- made food. Perfect pot of tea too. This pub deserves lots of business.

We stayed just down from the George and I’d booked a table for our silver wedding anniversary. Good choice of food, several fish dishes. I had the platter of seafood which was good but just too much of it for me. Neither of us wanted dessert but Pat presented us with a plate of strawberries and truffles with “happy 25th wedding anniversary “ written in chocolate. That was very thoughtful and a lovely gesture. Highly recommend.

Lovely little village, sat outside in a nice court yard, locals were 😁, menu is strange, specials were all fish, hubby went for the pork pie and I had the fish platter, both came with a very generous side of chips and new potatoes. We heard someone ask for the meat menu not sure what that was about, but the food was good and the atmosphere, if we had been around another night definitely would return.

Welcome was different and we were told to wait as they were busy. We had pre booked a table but the table was not reserved. We were given a table that was reserved for someone else and was told they were sick and not coming. Food was quick to arrive my partner enjoyed his scallops. We could not order coffee after the meal? Because the coffee machine was in the kitchen and the chef was busy so the machine could not be reached. Long wait between courses in fact we gave up trying to order. Not a pleasurable experience for us. Sorry.

I was actually staying here but ate here everyday. Will review accommodation on the other site. I am a Retired Home Economist so can spot ping meals and bought in stuff a mile off. Tim, the Chef, is amazing. His speciality is Fish, but all the food is good. In fact, this is the third time I have stayed here this year as never have a bad meal. The Scallops, salmon, chicken, pork, etc. all spot on. Sunday lunch is meat cut from a joint and not bought in slices to ping. Everything is home made - mint sauce, gravy etc. In fact I was lucky enough to be here in April and what Tim and Pat can do with wild garlic!!! Even gave me a jar of home made pesto to take home. Ian, behind the bar, is very knowledgeable about the food and local history. Pat, Tim's Wife is lovely and nothing is too much trouble. Pat even suggested I have smaller portions as she noticed I am not a big eater (due to mobility issues). As an onlooker, sitting in the bar, I was amazed at their patience. Is it me, or are some people (just a few) being more demanding since lockdown? Vic and I worked in the hospitality industry and I do wish people would realise that it is better to be nice, like Pat, Ian and the great Staff. I am a Widow who is still missing my Husband, Vic and wish to thank everyone for being so kind and jollying me along. Never stayed on my own for long, there was always someone who was willing to chat. Have limited walking and must say this is one of the few places I come where I can guarantee all the Staff are helpful without being patronising. Will be eating here again next month.

Chantal the barmaid was friendly and efficient especially as there were a few issues with what was available or not with the potato toppings!! My husband's spicy vegan haggis hotpot was apparently excellent and my lamb cutlets were amazingly not fiddly little thin things but three sturdy chops. Just wish the price of a couple of glasses of wine at so many establishments does not add up to the price of the meals!

Pub nearby, the map said, 4.5 stars, the information said. I would give The George 5 stars out of 5 easily. A warmer welcome you could not wish for, smiles all round. The menu was a little different to most pub fayre, we chose the posk stack and chicken in a stilton and apricot sauce. The portions were very generous and the flavours fantastic. The service, thank you Sam, was faultless. The menu is not expensive, only slightly above most chain style pubs, the quality of food is way beyond what I would expect for the price, definitely restaurant quality in flavour and presentation. We will return to try more of the menu-hope the faggots are still on and will try to leave space for dessert.

We were passing and literally called in on the off chance as it was lunchtime. I had ham, egg and chips and my wife had lasagne. Both meals were very good and the service was good too after an inauspicious start when we’re were sort of left to our own devices. The ham was freshly cooked and the lasagne was served with a good portion of chips and salad so all in all a pleasant lunch. If the staff could welcome customers a bit more energetically rather than leaving them to wait then it would make a big difference. Even a simple “be with you shortly” helps to manage expectations. Would visit again if in the area.

Live in the area and stopped in for a pint and to use the internet as ours was down. Barman told me the internet was broken and then continued to show his mates a video on the phone (with 4ft thick walls I doubt he had phone signal) whilst the landlady occupying one room of the pub sat on her laptop. Beers better and staff are friendly at the Rising Sun in Woolaston. Or the Boat in Redbrook. Or the Foresters Arms in Parkend. Hard work being a pub when the competition is so good.

Visited on the off chance for dinner. Pub quiet. Shown quickly to a table. Staff polite and friendly. Food was just OK. I think it is bought in and reheated as another pub locally has the same menu. What let it was the service. Had to go to the bar to ask for dessert menu and waited ages for someone to clear the table and take the order for dessert. In the end we gave up, paid at the bar and left. Won't be returning

The best thing about this place is the staff. They’re all very welcoming, friendly and really do look after you. The food was just ok but it is cheap.
