Family and friends Sunday lunch. Roasts were awful; very very dry beef (only meat option); frozen shop bought dry soggy roasties; lacking flavour watery gravy and not a lot of it; soggy deflated Yorkshire pudding. My mouth was so dry after chewing so hard on the beef. Best thing were the boiled carrot batons. Lasagne seemed shop bought/ processed sauces etc, and the 2 slices of frozen garlic bread dry and lacking flavour. The sting was that the lasagne was around £18, and the roast £16 - the portions were very small too. Could get better at Morrisons cafe sorry to say! Service was friendly, and the free pool and darts made up for the very disappointing meal. We’ve been going to The George for at least 10 years and it was very good 10 years ago; good value for large tasty meals (especially the blue cheese burger on a floury bap with curly fries and salad for under a tenner - i know prices have gone up for various reasons so it’s not the price that’s an issue if the food is decent and a good portion, but I felt well and truly ripped off). Please improve as we want to visit more as we’re local and love Hayfield and don’t want to see another pub close (sad to see The Royal go - Sportman down the road and Packhorse are great! As is Old Hall Inn in Chinley) due to lack happy returning customers. Good luck!

We arrived at 6.45pm and decided to have dinner. The only other option available on a Tuesday night was the Italian restaurant. Unfortunately this is not dog friendly. We were told food is served until 8pm on the dot and to order by 7.40 at the latest. We both chose the Chef's 'speciality' Steak and ale pie, chips and seasonal vegetables. For £18.95 we were looking forward to delicious meal! When the food arrived we were surprised at the size of the pie. It looked like we had one slice shared between us both! The remainder of the plate consisted of pale floppy frozen chips and a spoonful of peas and carrots. The pie didn't taste homemade. There was not a hint of ale. The steak filling was OK but tasted manufactured as did the gravy. A couple came in at 7.35 and asked to eat. They were told the kitchen is closed. They were disappointed as they had a dog so there was no other option for them to eat in Hayfield on a Tuesday evening. There were very strongly worded (bordering on aggressive)signs glued on to the tables to advise customers on using the carpark. In general the place seemed unwelcoming with a chef that obviously can't be bothered! We did eat all of our food as we were very hungry after a long drive. We didn't complain. We just put it down to a disappointing experience we won't repeat again! The couple who came in after us were lucky to not have wasted their money!!

We stayed for two nights for a wedding nearby. After a 4.5 hour journey we had a lovely warm welcome to the George Hotel. We had dinner on arrival which was great. The rooms were nice, beds extremely comfortable. Breakfast each morning was a full English, portions were just what you need and was yummy. My wife had the scrambled egg on toast which looked great. Daniel was fantastic! Would definitely recommend staying at the George Hotel.

We stayed in the George as we were attending a wedding locally. I’m really glad we did. The room was large, nicely decorated with an extremely comfortable bed. The host/manager Dan was extremely friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was lovely and freshly cooked to order. It’s very dog friendly (sausages specially cooked for our dog for breakfast). My only criticism would be that the hallway and stairs could do with some TLC. Would definitely stay again.

I can honestly say I’ve never had food so badly cooked. Pork belly to start which was very hard and no crackling whatsoever. I had gammon which was extremely thin and cooked so much it was like shoe leather. The egg on top had suffered a similar fete, the white beyond crispy and the yolk solid. The chips in all fairness were ok and luckily the peas hadn’t suffered the same outcome as the gammon and the egg. The drinks and service were good though and the lady serving was lovely. Give the food a miss but enjoy a drink.

BEWARE!! I stopped here drawn in by a sign on the main road promising great food. It was lunchtime so I diverted into the village and found the hotel car park. I had an adequate but not spectacular lunch. The sting in the tale was that ten days afterwards I received a Penalty Charge Notice in the post requiring a payment of £100 for parking there unauthorised (£60 for prompt payment). Nowhere in the car park did I see any warning, and nor did the bar staff alert me though it must have been obvious I was not local. I don’t expect to be charged for parking at the place where I am eating. It seems to me a bit disgraceful. Needless to say, I shall not be returning!

Hayfield hospitality in decline! Quick family lunch proved to be really disappointing. Options have seriously diminished in the area since COVID forced random opening times and the closure of the Royal. We popped into the George for a quick lunch following a walk on the glorious Sett Valley Trail. So two main observations A) Price - £18.99 for the chiefs speciality, steak pie with chips and peas, £7.99 for loaded potatoes skins . I know that the Pack Horse has upped the anti from a gourmet perspective with prices to reflect, by this is a boozer not a gastro pub! Which gets me to b) this was seriously poor quality! The £18.99 special was a slice of pie that looked like it was from costcutter. Loaded skins were basically a small potato cut in half with a dollop of ‘stuff’ on it. We order a bolognaise that arrive basically lacking any form of bolognaise as it was just pasta and tomato. All so poor, which is such a shame as it could have been so different and it’s a nice pub. The lad behind the bar tried so hard and agreed a refund for the bolognaise free bolognaise! The kitchen really let him down. Please someone invest in Hayfield and revive its ‘value for money ‘ fortune!

Had the lasagna and it was ok , I ate it because i was so hungry. The size was so small and looked like a meal you get get from your local supermarket. It said it came with garlic bread but my meal arrived with no garlic bread. You are not allowed in the main room with dogs or muddy boots . When i have been before which I admit was last year it was excellent. Was allowed in all major rooms. Guy on his phone all the time. We were going to go to the sportsman In Hayfield and we wish we had. Its a village that is visited by walkers and their dogs and sadly this pub just puts you in a side room.. Very expensive as well

Came to the Geroge after a long walk for a bite to eat and a drink. We ordered the steak and ale pie, and a pizza. The pizza was described as a ‘sourdough base’ but could not have been further from the truth. The pizza came and the dough was completely raw, inedible. They apologised and cooked the pizza again. Second time around it was still awful. The dough had no bite to it and was grainy. It was the saddest pizza I have had in a long time, even a supermarket frozen pizza would have far surpassed the quality. As for the pie, flavour was OK, however the pastry was also raw. The whole thing just looked like it had been heated up from frozen. £17 for the pie and £13 for the pizza was outrageous for the quality of food received. Save your cash and head elsewhere.

Breakfast first morning was unfortunately not available due to unforeseen gas problem, Ben informed us immediately and offered to recompense us very generously, we agreed to take part of the offer happily. Breakfast second morning was traditional English which was very nice. WE joined in a speed quiz in the bar Thursday night which was great fun, all done by phone to eliminate all those that google answers. The host was excellent and prizes generous with profits going to KIndle Scout mountain rescue, our best hope was to be last and win booby couple of drinks, alas we were not last. Great friendly pub.

The George Hotel Hadfield. Food arrived & hubbies sausage & mash portion was so small for £14.50. 3 sausages & bit of mash & gravy. We queried if anything else was to come, like vegetables & was informed that nothing else was to come with it (although peas was described on the menu) No manager available to talk to. Eventually I had finished my own meal by the time the lady behind the bar came to speak to my husband. Again we queried the portion & the fact that no vegetables had been included. She said that they were vegan sausages my husband had received & that peas should have been included. At this point, I had finished my food. The lady said she would get the kitchen staff to cook the actual dish that we had ordered. 30 minutes later the lady said it’s on its way. 12 minutes later the meat sausages, mash & gravy arrived, without peas. Was informed peas were on the way. 6 minutes later fine green beans arrived (no mention of the vegetable would be different). So in total my husbands total food arrived 48 minutes after I had finished my meal. No offer of a complimentary drink as an apology, in fact no apology of any kind. We come to this area for regular walks but will not eat here again or recommend to friends & family to eat here.

A characterful old stone building in a characterful old stone village. The interior is mainly half timbered which gives away its history, and it offers some splendid stained glass windows. The pub downstairs is frequented by locals and tourists alike, and feels authentic. The hotel upstairs seems to be mainly used by hikers to nearby Kinder Scout. We stayed the night and ate lunch the next day joined by family, and were looked after admirably by Sara (the landlady…?) and her team. Sara is a lady who understands hospitality - she gets it that the idea is to have guests leave having had a good time and feeling they have been cared for and been valued. She was happy to organise a slightly later checkout for us which we hugely appreciated, and her service throughout our stay was just right. Meanwhile our room was comfortable though admittedly quite straightforward in its facilities. There was a tea / coffee station in-room, and a tv and en-suite shower, but little else. The bed was perhaps a tiny bit narrow for a double, but perfectly comfortable enough. We were happy to forego the bells & whistles for a very reasonable price and that excellent hospitality. We’ll be back when we’re next in Hayfield.

We have just had the most superb meal at The George Hotel, Hayfield. This was one of the pub 'specials' and was the roast beef dinner with all trimmings. The staff kept us informed about waiting times and were most attentive at what was a very busy time of the evening. The meal was superb. There were large slices of beef with mash and roast potatoes. The vegetables were perfect and there was Yorkshire pudding and sauces. I can recommend this pub as being fine cuisine at a reasonable cost. Four of us ate for around £90 and this was with a nice bottle of Merlot. EXCELLENT.

Have been in the past a number of years ago. Just called for a drink as passing, I had decaff coffee which was excellent. Cosy place. Did not eat but the meals observed around looked a little small.

Often call in here as it is local to me and never been disappointed yet! They have plenty of Specials on offer but the standard menu is also spot on! The lighter portions are a great little extra option too for those with a smaller...

Spent the weekend in a nearby B&B and happened upon this place whilst wandering around the village on a pretty wet and miserable night. Had a couple of pints and decided to eat in the restaurant where my wife and I enjoyed a delicious home...

Visited here whilst spending a weekend in the village. The visit for evening meal started OK with a warm reception to the pub and quickly seated and drinks order taken. After that it went downhill. Service was slow and when it came to desserts we...

Not eaten here for a while but the food was still just as good as last time. It is not a gastro pub but it is a good "pub food pub". The food is very tasty and the prices are very reasonable. This is possibly...

The staff superb also the very smartly dressed they came out of kitchen to check if everything was satisfactory which I thought was different to some establishments we have visited

When staying in Hayfield not many places to eat. The George was recommended to us. It has good pub food. Thai prawns with noodles was good and was Steak and Ale Pie. Average prices.

We loved our lunch here, and the service was excellent! It was a big contrast with another place we tried earlier, where they halted service for 10 minutes in order to "catch up" - how ridiculous! We were made to feel welcome at Stars, despite it being busy, and couldn't fault our delicious food, at a good price too 😋. They're missing a trick by not having Buxton pudding on the menu though - surely we're not the only people who like to sample local specialities when visiting a place for the first time?

Blonde woman who works here needs to learn how to talk to people nicely. Went for ice creams for the kids at 14:40 and on entering she snaps to not close the door behind us. I was only being polite and didn't know it was warm inside. Went to order some ice creams, cakes and a toastie but she said in an eye rolling manner 'we're not serving hot food' I said 'what foods are you serving?' Thinking it was something to do with the heat; maybe they were only serving cold foods/sandwiches? She said 'only cakes and coffees as we're closing soon'. I just left with out buying anything as I didn't want to be a burden to her 16:00 closing time. If the woman was polite and explained things in a less snappy manner I would have settled for a few cakes and ice creams (without the meal). I would recommend self reflection and possibly communication training skills (unless it is due to a severe learning disability).

Rude ignarant staff, don't go there as it's such horrible service and even the managers don't give a damn when you complain.

This Wetherspoon's pub seems to prioritise serving food fast rather than quality. We ordered the vegetarian burgers and it was delivered in about 4 minutes. However the burgers were cold and the chips were soggy and cold. Very poor meal.
