We visited here after reading some encouraging reviews and noting that “booking is essential for food”, we thought it would be a safe bet while we were in the area. Unfortunately, the 2 stars are for service along as the bar staff were very polite and helpful. They are also dog friendly which is a bonus. Other than that, the food was not impressive. We had the Sunday roast and the beef tasted of poor quality, and vegetables were not seasoned and lacked flavour. The cabbage served with the meal was pickled which wasn’t what we expected. We were still hungry afterwards but didn’t want to waste any more money on desert in case it was more of the same. The decor is very tired and the place does lack atmosphere unfortunately. We didn’t drink alcohol but they have a wide variety of ales to choose from behind the bar. We won’t be returning, sadly!

Great evening at the George and Dragon for Stu’s legendary pie night - delicious steak and kidney for me and rave reviews for both the beef and the rabbit. We were spoilt for choice for quality beers but for me the Rudgate Ruby was spot on. This pub has got it all and is not to be missed if you’re in the area.

Our first visit since Stuart’s return. If you want proper pies and ale, with great service then look no further. We both had the wild rabbit, leek & mushroom. We both had braised red cabbage. I had mash and my husband had chips. It was superb and the ales we sampled, likewise. The customer service and background information provided by Alex was first rate. We will look forward to our next visit soon.

The George & Dragon is in my opinion the best pub in Yorkshire. Been going for 6 years and although it’s had a few recent changes of landlord and is on the look out for another, as a community owned pub it is an absolute pleasure to visit. At the moment only serving Sunday lunch but worth the trip for that alone and plenty of choice of great beer. Give it a try and you will not be disappointed.

Due the last landlord moving on, the George and Dragon is now being run by volunteers until a new tenant is found. The drinks are up to their usual high standards, lots of choice from many local breweries. Food is only served on Sundays at present, a previous landlord is back in the kitchen to help out. The roast beef was excellent served with a good, and large, selection of vegetables. If you haven't been for a while, come up to Hudswell and give the pub another go, you won't be disappointed.

Came here on good trip advisor recommendations. Was very much looking forward to the home made pie but it failed to impress. All food came out ridiculously fast so was obviously reheated. Begrudged paying for it but didn’t dare complain as the chef is also the landlord so wouldn’t have got very far. Wasn’t nice to see him vaping inside constantly in front of paying guests. Barman was a delight of a man and couldn’t do enough to please. Garden is unkept and scruffy. Establishment appears to be riding off the back of positive reviews from the past owners.

Unfortunately the beer and the view outside (weather permitting) is the only good thing about this pub. The food is basic and somewhat tasteless. My husband had the steak and ale pie, which wouldn’t pass muster if I had cooked it! I had chips with pulled pork which was spoilt by the synthetic tasting sauce it was in. I wouldn’t say it was a friendly reception and the decor is a mishmash of old, uncomfortable looking furniture. Our visit was only because we were staying local. It’s really not worth the visit.

This is a very traditional Yorkshire pub with friendly welcoming staff and super views from the restaurant and terrace. The roast beef dinner was one of the best roasts we have had and included everything you would hope for: cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, crispy potatoes, plenty of gravy and an enormous, perfectly cooked Yorkshire pud. We had a table which we had to move from at 6.35pm when those it was reserved for at 7 arrived early. Anyway not too much of a problem until just gone 7 when the staff decided that everyone needed on their evening out to listen to the latest announcement from Boris Johnson!! Turned up to fill volume!! Sorry atmosphere destroyed!! And when asked if it could be turned down ignored!! Oh and if you want to be covid secure practice what you preach. Saw staff high fiving.... the table we moved to was not cleaned (tbh I don't really care) also the beer mats from the table we left were not changed. Oh and the one way system is just stupid because I could leave via the door I am sat next to minimising my risk to and from others, but no I am forced to walk through the pub last numerous other tables and people. Having read all the reviews was really looking forward to visiting and being blown away by the food but unfortunately we weren't, don't get me wrong it was nice but nothing amazing. We had asked if we could have garden peas instead of mushy but the chef was obviously not open to this request, was busy being the last night of the government scheme and by the looks of it by himself in the kitchen but they were offered on other meals. Everything is as Covidsafe as it can be - efficient and easy to follow - they've really thought about how to make it work and still be as pleasurable as possible. The staff are friendly, totally professional and attend to everyone quickly. Their job is much harder now as it is strict table service...and there are steps between the various levels people can eat. Although a reduced menu and gone are sharing platters they go all out to make everything the best they can. Beer is high quality too.. if you like real ale I've never been anywhere to better it as their many CAMRA awards attest..and the best beer brewed by the Landlord #livebrew.

A few of the party called for drinks on Sunday and really enjoyed - all tables booked up again for Sunday lunch and my son ordered a lamb dinner to ‘keep him on’ until our evening meal - said it was spot on.

What a great place - like going back in time to a traditional country village pub run by people with passion and providing great beer and fantastic quality pub food. If you are near make sure you go and whilst you sit drinking and eating smile as you are also supporting a community pub.

One of those Sunday dinner without anything green. Easy red cabbage, carrot only in bowl of diced roasted parsnips but was quite cold. Cauliflower cheese contained 3 florets between 4 of us. Meat not much taste. Another meal where you feel leaving disappointed.

Stayed in the village for a few days and visited here for an evening meal. Great ales and a very friendly atmosphere with a roaring fire. Food was great and plenty of it with gluten free options as well. Definitely recommend

Very welcome resting spot after a long walk and climbing a lot of steps. The brew was well priced and the views are stunning. Worth nipping in if you’re walking by. We didn’t eat but it smelt lovely inside.

Four, 5 including our dog, of us arrived on New Years Day for lunch and the place was packed with locals, walkers and dogs, we waited a while with a pint in hand for a table and were rewarded with a superb meal. The George specialises in pies, we a had cheese and onion, (Wensleydale of course) and steak and kidney pies, unfortunately they had run out of roast potatoes but the chips were of similar size and just as tasty. There were only two people that we could see, a barman who was very chatty and helpful with little waiting time for drinks, and a lady who served the meals, cleared the tables, avoided the various dogs and helped us with our choices. All in all brilliant, efficient service, it makes you wonder why other pubs and restaurants have so many people to attend to you.The range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks was extensive, As a community pub this is brilliant and well worth the support from anybody and everybody who visits the Richmond area.

Simple menu, brilliantly executed. Staff and service, friendly, efficient and polite. The cheese and onion pie was absolutely spot on as was the steak and kidney. Nice pastry and loads of fillings. The chips were ‘proper’ and the roasted veg a delight. Decent hand pulled beer and a fair wine selection means we will definitely go back!

Had rad about the pub and decided we would all go. They did smaller portions for children. Husband and son loved the cheese pie. My steak pie was very very tasty too. Happily full, we walked the mile back to lodges. Great service by staff on a busy night.

A menu based on pies was different but we were not disappointed. The cheese and onion pie was fantastic and something you never see on a menu. We also had the braised red cabbage and roasted root vegetables.

Staying just down the road, we decided to walk to the pub for our evening meal. We arrived ordered a drink and viewed the menu along with the specials. Although the menu is not as extensive as I was hoping for (really fancied steak) we both found something that we were looking forward to.

This pub is fantastic. Great food, beer and view. The homemade pies are delicious. There is a pie of the week along with other specials and a good menu of other pies and choices. There is an excellent choice of vegetables and potatoes and the extra gravy comes in a little jug.

We went to Richmond to wander around the castle and the shops.. had googled where to go for lunch previously and based on the reviews on trip advisor we chose this place. We walked along the river from Richmond which I can highly recommend (the route is described on a link on the pub’s website). Had a warm welcome and friendly service.

Whilst on a break in North Yorkshire we were lured from Upper Wharfedale, where we were staying, to a village just outside Richmond, by the promise of excellent food (according to trip advisor) in the North West Yorkshire pub of the year, the George and Dragon at Hudswell.Oh how we wished we hadn't.

Could not recommend enough! Staff are so friendly and welcoming. They make sure to go above and beyond for customers, making sure you have everything you need. Decor is absolutely fabulous and not to forget they grow their own fresh ingredients, you don’t get a better experience than that. Food is 10/10 so flavourful, definitely will be returning.

Great service and great food. Chef obliged me in spite of being 15 mins past his no breakfast notification. Very friendly. Quite a discovery this place, which is a bit tucked away. Will definitely be back. Just how cafés should be.
