Food was nice once it arrived to the table but it was a 45 minute wait for starters, no one came over to check if we wanted more drinks or to see if everything was ok. It seemed like it was just one chef on as all the food was coming out so late. It was a shame as we probably won't go back with the service being how it was.

We visited The General Elliot for Sunday lunch with friends and, unfortunately, left feeling very disappointed. The food was extremely poor, particularly the burgers. Three of our friends ordered burgers, expecting a hearty meal, but what arrived was underwhelming—two very small patties that were barely noticeable in the bun. The portion size and presentation did not match what was described on the menu. When a member of staff checked if we were happy with our meals, we mentioned our disappointment with the burgers, only to receive a dismissive response of, "That's how they come." There was no offer to rectify the issue or even acknowledge our feedback properly. We hadn’t dined here in a few years, and sadly, this experience has not encouraged us to return anytime soon. With so many great pubs offering quality Sunday lunches, we expected better. A real shame, as this used to be a lovely place to eat.

Christmas dinner As we arrived in car park customers who were leaving said don’t bother as service was no existent When we entered told to buy our drinks at bar.1st larger was totally flat and had to be replaced with an alternative which was not much better. Asked for a baileys to b told they had none . were told to go outside to tepi and wait to b called to table .after a 20 minute wait we were called to table looked like it hadn’t been cleaned since last sitting Went to bar to find only 1 staff serving When asked for a coffee was told i don’t work here and told I don’t know how to work machine .after a further 90minutes our starters arrived which were a poor imitation of what was advertised ie smoked salmon prawn capers then had to ask for dipping starter which was advertised but hadn’t been served as apparently had to request which turned out to a bowl of oil with I suspect to b basmati sauce and a bowl of olives and some stale bread As I was with a party of 6 people paying £82.50 per head i was expecting a slightly better service After a few enquiries was told the chef had died a few days ago My heart goes out to his family But why o why did Henry go ahead with opening on Christmas Day There was only a brilliant young girl of maybe 14 years of age serving all the tables who was the star of the day along with a woman who turned out to be henrys mother serving the whole event. why didn’t Henry just cancel the day in respect for the poor person who passed away I could go on and on about the food or service but to no avail as when I went to see Henry in the kitchen I was unceremoniously told to leave as police would be called grabbed by the neck and pushed out of the door Went back to table for his mother to come and whisper in my ear do I live in the village which I replied no to then b told not to come here again Having only had 4 olives Having returned a crusty prawn mush Waited a further hour for main to appear which was totally inedible At this point I was fuming and had to go outside to calm down 40 minutes later the party I was with came out saying they had had enough as desserts had not arrived My partner made a formal complaint to Henry The next day she received a email from Henry saying to supply her email address as he would return £517 .70 As of today 23/1 and repeated emails which he doesn’t reply to we have received nothing Would have liked to have found out why none of his staff had turned up to work

We had Christmas lunch here and it was poor from start to finish. We were shown to our table and waited but no-one came to take a drink order (unlike last year and precious visits throughout the year). I then had to go and wait in a queue to order drinks, only 1 person on the bar who was not in a rush and most beers were off, no alcohol free unless it was Guinness. Waited for the breads/olives only for the starters to come out, asked for the olives and breads, eventually sent olives out and also gave a large table next to us olives in the middle of eating Christmas dinner...no sign of breads. Sons starter didn't arrive, was told quality was not good and they could offer an alternative (fine) which he chose apple. Had to ask for cutlery and chase up his starter after a further 20 minutes, we had eaten ours by the time his arrived. The mains were ok but for a Christmas meal (and basing this on previous years) you would expect a Yorkshire pudding and some veg on the plate, we had 1 carrot and some cabbage.. Food was ok but not to precious standards, the meal was very expensive including our drinks for the day circa £300ish for 2 adults/2 children. For that price you expect good service and a much better ambience. Last year there was a jazz musician too. Instead lots were complaining or leaving due to the service or lack of. I used to love this place but sadly will be out last time as we will be looking for somewhere else next Christmas. If you can't do a good job, you really shouldn't bother.

When I made the booking, I told a member of staff that someone in my family has allergy to butter. We told the waitress this when we ordered because she never asked us, obviously came back with buttered bread on the pate starter. We asked again to make sure that the main course and dessert would not be cooked with butter when we were served both courses we asked if they contain butter and the reply was probably asked to see the manager and was told he was hiding in the kitchen and would not come out. Also not impressed with sexist remarks from bar staff.

Went today for Sunday lunch with family the pub was less than a third full. Waited quite a while for any drinks order to be taken with the young waitress unable to tell us what draught lager was available her excuse was she is didn’t know, being underage and can’t drink.Tip …train your staff. Waited quite a while for food order to arrive. The chicken Sunday lunch was dry, roast potatoes lukewarm and the gravy tasteless and watery .The roast beef on another was overdone . Maybe better luck with desserts?..The apple cherry crumble had to be sent back as the crumble topping was capable of breaking teeth .A substitute was given when brought to their attention. Chocolate brownie with one scoop of ice cream which was half melted before dessert cutlery was brought after asking.Tip again train your staff and up your presentation on the desserts. After 20 years visiting the General Elliott this will be our last time. The owner was very dismissive when we said it has cold, he went away shaking his head, he said it was cold outside as well!3 of us ordered Fish and chips and we were it told was not available even though we were first in to dine( one of the most popular dishes)We ordered steak and ale pie, there was no pastry in the pie just some puff pastry on top,the pie had quite a few carrots as a filler and one of my friends has quite a bit of grissle in. Will higher than average prices( ie fish and chips £17) we expected good food and service both of which were lacking. This is the my first trip even adviser review, our friends tried to persuade us not to go after reading previous poor reviews,we wanted to find out for ourselves and were greatly disappointed.

This is now an unrepentant Dog Friendly pub where you can't eat without being surrounded by the creatures. I'm happy they should be welcome but believe they should be kept away from areas where food is being served. Today some of them were so smelly it was horrible and we counted upwards of 12 at one point. I'd always enjoyed the food too until today. My Japanese burger was just battered chicken with not much flavour and my friends chicken stroganoff did not taste like strogonoff at all. The sauce was very watery. We did not receive any discount when we complained. Sorry to say we won't be back any time soon.

Disappointing, took my family from other side of Manchester here tonight after having a positive experience in the summer, went for the Sunday dinner after not having blade of beef on the menu which I can imagine is a big seller, we all went for the Sunday dinner there was no cauliflower cheese or red cabbage even there say there is on there “sample” menu they advertise so the main course didn’t fill us up, 3 choices of starters so we didn’t have any, waiters are lovely but it wasn’t busy, took awhile to take our plates away and also lost out on making more money for the business by not asking if we wanted anymore drinks when we had finished them half way through our meal, poor choices of desserts so we have come home hungry. Not one to complain about food but shouldn’t have too, we will stick with your competitive Sunday dinner restaurants within the area…

Waited over 40 mins for food, we ordered two roast beef dinners with extra potatoes. Firstly they brought the extra potatoes out first which where cold, few mins later the dinner arrived, the beef was very tough couldn’t cut it and the rest was cold , only thing hot was the extra pot of gravy. Staff seemed new as they didn’t really know what to do, apart from being told by some guy walking round on a laptop telling them what needed doing. When I complained I was either offered to have the meals recooked ( didn’t want to wait another 45 mins or a free dessert ( didn’t fancy a dessert after not eating my main. Still ended up paying for some thing I didn’t eat , very expensive for awful food , will not be returning !!

£160 bill for 3 adults and one child!!!! Straight away they didn't know what the soup of the day was and when it came it was the worst soup ever, definitely not leek and potato and it came 10 mins after the others had their starters. One starter was chicken wings said the sauce would come on the side but no it was all over the chicken. Said well stocked bar but no Malibu!!!! Fresh cod was frozen like mush best thing was the curry sauce. Asked for another beer, they forgot that. Kids meal worked out at £30, garlic bread, steak & chips, then a small bowl of ice cream. The GE has so much potential… but the execution leaves room for a lot of work. A quiet Sunday evening dinner that unfortunately didn’t deliver. The building, outdoor area and decor are elegant and very inviting. Then you sit down to ikea cutlery? We had the Sautéed chorizo and Burrata to start, the chorizo was over cooked and mulch like, but the burrata was excellent but be warned the chilli dressing is not for the faint hearted. Two roast dinners - pork and beef at £17.95 each were just ok. Gravy was almost jelly like and the giant roast potatoes lacked any flavour. All in all, probably won’t go back. Worth noting we did receive a discount on the chorizo. (PS you don’t need to call everything GE on the menu).

Not usually one to complain about food because I appreciate it’s hard enough out there for businesses however having been here for lunch I was so disappointed. I ordered cod goujons on open sandwich. The fish was nice but 2 pieces was nowhere near enough. The sandwich was a piece of French toast and I struggled to cut through it. The Side salad was literally filling out the plate to disguise the portion size. My wife had the mussels and she was okay with that although she felt it lacked a piece of bread to dip into the sauce. I would say that the surroundings were nice and the staff were friendly but the food wasn’t great and my meal cost £12 inc a glass of coke. Far. Too expensive for what was served and so with that in mind I don’t think I will be going back anytime soon.

Henry and the team worked with us to provide a menu that was delicious, easy to eat from picnic blankets, had options for children and was within the budget of our guests. We also had a no glass policy for the school field and this was catered to, to ensure the safety of our children on the field. The fish and chips were completely overcooked, even hard to chew - I was hungry and wish I had one from my local takeaway instead - really bad!, and the "beef and mash" - swim in liquid smoke like in a gravy - may be there was some small amount of pulled beef underneath potatoes mash, questionable quality, I do not know... what this dish was it ment to be?? On arrival at the pub you open the doors and think, hmm nice place shame only a few people are in here. despite this fact I had to wait 5 minutes to get served, Not a great start. I thought perhaps the staff were new. We had intended to eat that evening. Having not been in this place before (yet on several occasions passing and seeing it was newly renovated), figured it would be worth trying. So, despite it being like a library, and fear of being overheard when I chew, I was too hungry to try elsewhere. My luck got worse.... the service just to order the food took an eternity, When the food did arrive it was not only cold, but looked like something a child had put together. It is very expensive compared to other quality eateries in Croft, so I expected this to serve top quality produce, crafted by a skilled chef. Sadly every one of the dishes looked uncooked, cold or amateurish. Not at all anywhere near the standard you would expect for £27 average a plate. I hardly ever complain, but I had to say something on this occasion. At this point the owner of the pub walked in and the waitress asked him to speak to our table. We made it clear the food wasn't good ....the outcome..... Totally arrogant man and unwilling to offer any kind of recompense. Not even an apology. Just made out he was too busy. Nobody at any point had a clue about hospitality in this place. It is a shame as the building is lovely, but it is clearly run with someone who has absolutely zero people skills, and clearly no idea how to run a pub restaurant. Even Basil Fawlty would do a better job.

Mixed feelings. Having had Sunday lunch here a few weeks ago, which was great, we gave breakfast a go today. It was a very mixed experience. Firstly, we asked if they did fresh orange juice, which the young lady serving us said they did. When it arrived, it was a tiny serving, and definitely not fresh! I suspect it was a bottle of Britvic 55. Not a nice accompaniment to breakfast, and definitely not ‘fresh’! My husband and I both ordered the Full English, and as I dont like mushrooms, tomatoes or black pudding, i asked for extra beans and bacon instead. On arrival we were really disappointed to see very pale, barely cooked streaky bacon. The fat was so soft and meat pale pink you could barely see what was meat what was fat. We asked for it to be cooked more, so that it was ‘well done’. We don’t like eating the fat, but as there was so much fat to meat, we felt that if it was cooked really well we could eat it. It was returned cooked more, but definitely not ‘well’ so we had to spend time cutting the meat out - an unnecessary faff ! Why cant the chef order back bacon, the same as virtually every other restaurant serving English breakfasts?! The sausages, rosti, egg and toast were lovely, and my Scottish husband was delighted to get Stornaway black pudding, as he really doesn’t like Bury black pudding due to the chunks of fat. The GE baked beans were a huge disappointment. Clearly ‘home made’, we both really wished the chef had stuck to tinned! Some of the beans were soft, others hard and not pleasant at all. The beans themselves were tasteless, but the very thick, limited sauce tasted overwhelmingly off herbs. We both left over 3/4 of them. We ended the meal with a coffee, which though nice, was the smallest cappuccino we’ve ever had! So, a very mixed experience, but key elements were so poor that we definitely wouldn’t return for breakfast.

Nice, home cooked food and a bit of a different menu than your standard pub fayre. We were sat in the conservatory and it was a bit chilly so I had to keep my coat on! Would definitely return though.

- 30 minute wait for food after ordering starters. - £13.50 for three small scallops and two pieces of deep fried bacon (see image). - 25 minute wait for desserts after mains cleared. - When offered constructive criticism about delayed service and portion size it was met with nonchalant arrogance. - Goes without saying I would not recommended this establishment.

Made very welcome with our 3 month old puppy, given a nice quiet table, puppy settled right away, able to enjoy the most delicious food. Afterwards, puppy did a bit of socialising with two other dogs. A great night, staff friendly and very helpful.

It looks a really nice place and has a large carpark for easy parking.Staff were friendly and polite. Service was a little slow and the sea bass was good five minutes later than the other mains, which is never good. Menu reads well but didn't quite hit the mark. I appreciate prices have gone up everywhere but this seems a little expensive for what it is. There was nothing really bad about the dining experience it was just a little "meh". We were expecting something a little more. Sorry. Will try again in case it was just an off day.

Great gastrobpud feel to what seems to be a newly renovated pub/restaurant, with a nice rural feel to it. Food was lovely and a good selection of drinks at the bar. Will be revisiting soon! Only comment would be that we were sat in a large room with a vaulted ceiling with only a couple tables filled, whilst the rest of the cosier areas were full, so j have removed one star for the atmosphere where we were sat. Would be nice to have such a big room filled with people if possible. However, this didn't take away from the experience at a lovely pub.

Just home from the GE and feel robbed if I’m honest. I sent my dinner back, peri peri chicken. Chicken looked like it had come out of the freezer and been cooked, was placed on a cold, unappetising looking pitta bread, absolutely smothered in mayo with pale, tasteless chips. Quite frankly amazed at how awful this dish was. I tried a few mouthfuls but honestly couldn’t stomach it. My daughters ate some of their meals but simply out of hunger not because they were enjoyable. Extortionate prices for basic, lifeless meals that are even now repeating on us all leaving us feeling quite unwell. Just a taste of cheap, badly prepared food. Nobody seemed really interested in us or our opinions so just paid for what we had and got out fast. We will never be returning. Came away starving and so just made myself beans on toast with cheese that saved the day. Sorry GE but you really need to do a whole lot better.

Cannot fault everything here from pre attendance support to on nights service and excellent food. We booked a family of 15 for a visit for our visiting American family. We pre-ordered, all very smooth and friendly. On the night we were served by a young lad who had maturity and excellent service skills beyond his years. He was extremely attentive, friendly and nothing was too much. The food was a great mix of traditional and contemporary dishes and everyone loved their food, all really well presented and super tasty. And the end of the night was stress free, bill settled and everyone thanked when they left. Whether it’s a casual passing lunch or a little more, the General Elliot has delivered for us on all fronts and can’t be faulted.

The service was great and to be fair, so was the food 👍 my missus is a chef and it can be hard to find places that cook well with good ingredients. Our only critique would be we think there should be 2 chicken thighs on the Buttermilk Burger! It was tasty, and 1 whole breast would be enough, but for £17, I think it could stretch to 2 thighs! Quite the opposite of my massive fish 👌 In all though, we'll be back as it was lovely!

We have eaten here a few times recently. The service was excellent. Friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. The halloumi “fish and chips” is so tasty. The sticky salt and pepper halloumi is delicious. My husband’s fish and chips was enormous and he enjoyed every mouthful. He also enjoyed the burger. It’s a small team of staff who work hard. Every one of the staff is friendly and welcoming. It’s a busy village pub which serves delicious food. I’d recommend booking.
