Waited over 40 mins for food, we ordered two roast beef dinners with extra potatoes. Firstly they brought the extra potatoes out first which where cold, few mins later the dinner arrived, the beef was very tough couldn’t cut it and the rest was cold , only thing hot was the extra pot of gravy. Staff seemed new as they didn’t really know what to do, apart from being told by some guy walking round on a laptop telling them what needed doing. When I complained I was either offered to have the meals recooked ( didn’t want to wait another 45 mins or a free dessert ( didn’t fancy a dessert after not eating my main. Still ended up paying for some thing I didn’t eat , very expensive for awful food , will not be returning !!

We went for the breakfast on a Sunday morning and the food was delicious! We each had a full English and they were more than happy to swap some aspects of the dish. The atmosphere was lovely and the girl serving us from very sweet and polite. We went to the little shop afterwards and got some lovely brownies as well as some vintage glasses.

£160 bill for 3 adults and one child!!!! Straight away they didn't know what the soup of the day was and when it came it was the worst soup ever, definitely not leek and potato and it came 10 mins after the others had their starters. One starter was chicken wings said the sauce would come on the side but no it was all over the chicken. Said well stocked bar but no Malibu!!!! Fresh cod was frozen like mush best thing was the curry sauce. Asked for another beer, they forgot that. Kids meal worked out at £30, garlic bread, steak & chips, then a small bowl of ice cream. Staff had no idea and we will definitely not return. We don't mind paying for good food but this was poor service with dreadful food.

Two of us went for Friday lunch and had a fabulous meal. I had the Caesar salad with chicken and it is quite possibly the best chicken Caesar salad I’ve ever had. My friend really enjoyed her steak and Stilton open sandwich which looked delicious. I then had the chocolate mousse which was light but full on flavour and quite filling (in a pleasing way) despite the lightness. The staff were really friendly and the interior is beautifully done. This is my new favourite place for lunch!

The GE has so much potential… but the execution leaves room for a lot of work. A quiet Sunday evening dinner that unfortunately didn’t deliver. The building, outdoor area and decor are elegant and very inviting. Then you sit down to ikea cutlery? We had the Sautéed chorizo and Burrata to start, the chorizo was over cooked and mulch like, but the burrata was excellent but be warned the chilli dressing is not for the faint hearted. Two roast dinners - pork and beef at £17.95 each were just ok. Gravy was almost jelly like and the giant roast potatoes lacked any flavour. All in all, probably won’t go back. Worth noting we did receive a discount on the chorizo. (PS you don’t need to call everything GE on the menu).

Not usually one to complain about food because I appreciate it’s hard enough out there for businesses however having been here for lunch I was so disappointed. I ordered cod goujons on open sandwich. The fish was nice but 2 pieces was nowhere near enough. The sandwich was a piece of French toast and I struggled to cut through it. The Side salad was literally filling out the plate to disguise the portion size. My wife had the mussels and she was okay with that although she felt it lacked a piece of bread to dip into the sauce. I would say that the surroundings were nice and the staff were friendly but the food wasn’t great and my meal cost £12 inc a glass of coke. Far. Too expensive for what was served and so with that in mind I don’t think I will be going back anytime soon.

We recently held a Big Top Circus event in our local primary school and needed some catering and bar facilities on site for our 600 guests. Henry and the team worked with us to provide a menu that was delicious, easy to eat from picnic blankets, had options for children and was within the budget of our guests. We also had a no glass policy for the school field and this was catered to, to ensure the safety of our children on the field. Their set up looked fantastic, and Henry worked with us to find a layout that worked within our grounds and worked for his team to provide an excellent level of service and great quality food.

25 March 2024 We attend The General Elliott after receiving poor service from The Swan Public House at Winwick. On entering The General Elliott we were welcomed by an extremely courteous, professional and pleasant staff member who showed us to our table, where she explained current ongoing works being undertaken on the premises and where the toilets were situated. We ordered Salmon, Fish Pie and Sticky Toffee Pudding, all of which were hot and delicious. We will definitely make The General Elliott our first port of call for a meal, this being due to the professionalism of our greeting and the quality of food and service we received. We would ask that our comments and thanks be passed on to the young lady who welcomed and served us.

They changed the menu. Most of the dishes on the photos from other reviews are not available. We spent £100 for a family of 4. The fish and chips were completely overcooked, even hard to chew - I was hungry and wish I had one from my local takeaway instead - really bad!, and the "beef and mash" - swim in liquid smoke like in a gravy - may be there was some small amount of pulled beef underneath potatoes mash, questionable quality, I do not know... what this dish was it ment to be?? The young guy serving us was nice and got tips. Been there 14th of march, evening - not returning and not recommending.

On arrival at the pub you open the doors and think, hmm nice place shame only a few people are in here. despite this fact I had to wait 5 minutes to get served, Not a great start. I thought perhaps the staff were new. We had intended to eat that evening. Having not been in this place before (yet on several occasions passing and seeing it was newly renovated), figured it would be worth trying. So, despite it being like a library, and fear of being overheard when I chew, I was too hungry to try elsewhere. My luck got worse.... the service just to order the food took an eternity, When the food did arrive it was not only cold, but looked like something a child had put together. It is very expensive compared to other quality eateries in Croft, so I expected this to serve top quality produce, crafted by a skilled chef. Sadly every one of the dishes looked uncooked, cold or amateurish. Not at all anywhere near the standard you would expect for £27 average a plate. I hardly ever complain, but I had to say something on this occasion. At this point the owner of the pub walked in and the waitress asked him to speak to our table. We made it clear the food wasn't good ....the outcome..... Totally arrogant man and unwilling to offer any kind of recompense. Not even an apology. Just made out he was too busy. Nobody at any point had a clue about hospitality in this place. It is a shame as the building is lovely, but it is clearly run with someone who has absolutely zero people skills, and clearly no idea how to run a pub restaurant. Even Basil Fawlty would do a better job.

Mixed feelings. Having had Sunday lunch here a few weeks ago, which was great, we gave breakfast a go today. It was a very mixed experience. Firstly, we asked if they did fresh orange juice, which the young lady serving us said they did. When it arrived, it was a tiny serving, and definitely not fresh! I suspect it was a bottle of Britvic 55. Not a nice accompaniment to breakfast, and definitely not ‘fresh’! My husband and I both ordered the Full English, and as I dont like mushrooms, tomatoes or black pudding, i asked for extra beans and bacon instead. On arrival we were really disappointed to see very pale, barely cooked streaky bacon. The fat was so soft and meat pale pink you could barely see what was meat what was fat. We asked for it to be cooked more, so that it was ‘well done’. We don’t like eating the fat, but as there was so much fat to meat, we felt that if it was cooked really well we could eat it. It was returned cooked more, but definitely not ‘well’ so we had to spend time cutting the meat out - an unnecessary faff ! Why cant the chef order back bacon, the same as virtually every other restaurant serving English breakfasts?! The sausages, rosti, egg and toast were lovely, and my Scottish husband was delighted to get Stornaway black pudding, as he really doesn’t like Bury black pudding due to the chunks of fat. The GE baked beans were a huge disappointment. Clearly ‘home made’, we both really wished the chef had stuck to tinned! Some of the beans were soft, others hard and not pleasant at all. The beans themselves were tasteless, but the very thick, limited sauce tasted overwhelmingly off herbs. We both left over 3/4 of them. We ended the meal with a coffee, which though nice, was the smallest cappuccino we’ve ever had! So, a very mixed experience, but key elements were so poor that we definitely wouldn’t return for breakfast.

Only comment would be that we were sat in a large room with a vaulted ceiling with only a couple tables filled, whilst the rest of the cosier areas were full, so j have removed one star for the atmosphere where we were sat. Would be nice to have such a big room filled with people if possible. However, this didn't take away from the experience at a lovely pub.

Just home from the GE and feel robbed if I’m honest. I sent my dinner back, peri peri chicken. Chicken looked like it had come out of the freezer and been cooked, was placed on a cold, unappetising looking pitta bread, absolutely smothered in mayo with pale, tasteless chips. Quite frankly amazed at how awful this dish was. I tried a few mouthfuls but honestly couldn’t stomach it. My daughters ate some of their meals but simply out of hunger not because they were enjoyable. Extortionate prices for basic, lifeless meals that are even now repeating on us all leaving us feeling quite unwell. Just a taste of cheap, badly prepared food. Nobody seemed really interested in us or our opinions so just paid for what we had and got out fast. We will never be returning. Came away starving and so just made myself beans on toast with cheese that saved the day. Sorry GE but you really need to do a whole lot better.

The food was fantastic, and they even made me a cheeseboard for our family visitors the following day as a takeaway to save me catering! Outside, the grounds were great for our treasure hunt, to burn off energy, and egg and spoon races we held, and the indoor space brilliant for a games area around the eating space - ample room for all. Not surprised as the management didn't seem at all interested in the guests, after complaining about the meal, very overpriced for portion sizes and not cooked to our liking the very young waiter discounted our bill but the manager didnt seem at all interested. Cocktails were extremely expensive at £9 each servied in glasses that were half the size of the usual cocktail glasses making them vey bad value for money. I dont mind paying £9 for a cocktail if it is served in a glass the size that most other establishments use.

This was a great place for consistent top quality service and food. I ordered the chicken stroganoff which was incredible and my dad ordered the liver. Safe to say we did not leave anything on the plate, even though it was a good-sized portion for...

My previous visit to the General Elliot was years ago. Well before they closed to revamp the place. I went last weekend and I was really pleased with the whole place. The food was genuinely quality, the staff couldn't be more pleasant if they tried and the seating area at the back is a proper sun trap. It's gorgeous when going for lunch during the sunny weekends.

We came here as a family group for Mother's Day and both the food and service were shocking. The food was outrageously priced for the quality - honestly, I would've been happier with a Toby Carvery. Things were missing from the roast dinners, parts weren't...

Friends were visiting from Canada & chose the General Elliot for our get together. The pub had been one of our favourites in our young carefree days 50 years ago before we scattered all over the planet. The food was good but quite pricey. Four...

Five of us had Sunday lunch here on the recommendation of our in-laws who have been regular visitors lately. Booking via WhatsApp was very simple and I found it to be a novel approach I would encourage other venues to consider. We ordered roast dinners and the salmon, then desserts and a cheeseboard. We waited some time for our mains to arrive, but this was our only minor criticism. The meals were excellent and the portion size of the cheeseboard in particular was generous. The main reason for giving five stars is how attentive the staff were. Our young son ordered a sticky toffee pudding and drew a picture of how he thought it would look. The waitress (whose name I am afraid I didn't catch) saw it and took it to the kitchen. The chef then made the dessert to match the picture and brought it out herself directly to our table. Our son was overjoyed by the attention and it made his day. Going above and beyond like that was brilliant service in my opinion. All the staff were professional and friendly, but that gesture really stood out to us. I have no hesitation in recommending the General Elliot to anyone. We will certainly be back.

Awesome country pub with both spot on beers and cracking food. Awesome garden eating area. Better than other eateries in the area. They have a private area you can book for family occasions. Large car park. Definitely worth a visit

Took daughter and son in law out for lunch whilst they were visiting. Tapas was great. Sadly run out of prawns but the remaining dishes were great. Whipped feta v tasty with little crackers to spread it on. Chorizo in honey was amazing. Explosion of flavour. The plat of cold meats had lots of flavour. Good pickles and peppers on there. Some strongish blue cheese. Chicken wings were good possibly a bit cold. And of course patatas bravas. Lovely meal. Friendly team. Went for crepes for desert in the Xmas market after !

Absolutely loved our meal at the Jolly thresher, staff were so friendly and attentive, nothing was too much trouble, they went above and beyond., the bar man heard my Mum and I discussing the pump cider and without a word, gave us a taster to help us decide. Our meal was delicious, generous portions and reasonably priced. We will definitely be returning.

Came here for some drinks with family on our sons 18th. Our son was treated so well by the staff, and had an amazing time(as did we all). Regular customers (whom we had never met before) even joined in our celebrations! The food was delicious too. An absolutely brilliant time and amazing bar staff.
