Gee's Restaurant in Oxford

We went to Gee’s for our anniversary and it was just gorgeous! Beautiful surroundings, lovely staff and delicious flavoursome food thoughtfully presented. Couldn’t fault it, will definitely be back!

Lovely dinner with friends, great atmosphere even with our late seating at 8.45pm. Great food, loved the burrata and croquettes. Staff fab too, very friendly.

Desafortunadamente, hubo un problema importante con la factura y la gerente del restaurante (creo que este era su papel) se enojó mucho y básicamente fue acusada de tratar de no pagar. Estuve allí con colegas y dos de nuestros cuatro miembros tuvieron que irse temprano y pagaron por lo que tenían en la caja. El tercer miembro de nuestro partido pagó su comida, dejándome pagar el último. Debía alrededor de £ 50, pero luego se me presentó una factura de alrededor de £ 170. Después de revisar el proyecto de ley punto por punto y pedir a nuestros colegas que enviaran capturas de pantalla de sus recibos, estaba muy claro que se habían tomado pagos, pero algunos artículos no se habían eliminado de la factura. Intentamos explicar esto con pruebas fotográficas de lo que se había pagado, pero en repetidas ocasiones nos dijeron que estábamos equivocados y debíamos 170 libras esterlinas , a pesar de que esto claramente no era cierto. Incluso admitió en un momento que había tomado un pago completo, pero no eliminó ningún artículo, pero aún así no aceptaría que esto significaba que parte de la factura había sido pagada! ¡Nunca antes me habían echado gas por una factura! Ella se volvió tan agresiva y nos estaba gritando tan fuerte a través del restaurante que los otros huéspedes e incluso el personal de la cocina estaban deteniendo lo que estaban haciendo y mirando. Esta es una lección para mí de no pagar la cuenta por separado como nunca más, pero fue una experiencia horrible, confrontativa e innecesaria que podría haberse tratado tranquilamente y con calma. Finalmente se me permitió pagar por lo que había consumido, aunque no sin tener que pedir enérgicamente que me quitaran la propina, lo que también fue un poco una pelea. Por favor, asegúrese de revisar su factura cuando pague!

The management was like Fawlty Towers! We were a party of four for Sunday lunch. Of the main courses two arrived followed by mine which was the wrong dish despite it being double checked by the waitress at the time of ordering (there being two different lamb dishes on the menu). I sent this back. The fourth main dish arrived 5 minutes later without any explanation for the delay. When after 10 minutes or so the correct dish arrived for me the lamb was completely overcooked and I sent it back. The waitress had been very plain that the restaurant only served lamb pink and I was plain that I would not want it if it was cooked any more than this! The manager asked if I would like anything whilst I waited which I declined. We all thought this meant that this was being offered whilst I waited for my main course to be cooked again. Nothing arrived by the time everyone else had finished and when I enquired about my main course the manager said she thought I did not want anything else to eat!. No sincere apology for the incorrect main course nor for the overcooked main course and nor for misunderstanding about the offer of something else to eat. My main course was removed from the bill the manager offered nothing else to compensate for this disastrous experience not even the coffee which I had ordered.

We found this place on Trip Advisor and got intrigued with the space so booked a dinner reservation. It was beyond our expectations! The space was amazing, it used to be Mr Gee’s flower shop the waitress shared with us. It gave it the good bones the designers worked with. The food was amazing. Beet carpaccio, oyster and steak salad with a bottle of wine. The patio doors were open and there was a lovely breeze (we looked it was 107 degrees in Dallas when we ate dinner!). Highly recommend.

I have reviewed Gees through Open Table many times and always given it top marks as my favourite Oxford restaurant. I was a guest today on Sunday 25 February and chose the Sunday lunch special, the lamb. The cut was a poor one, but more seriously, it was hopelessly over-cooked.

What has happened to Gee's????? Having not been for a while, we decided to treat ourselves to a Thursday night supper. Dreadful! And so unexpected. What's going on? My wife had an awful starter (badly spiced carrot soup - virtually uneatable - someone's hand had slipped in the preparation) and then a perfectly pleasant main course (loin of venison). I had a lovely starter - a gorgonzola and mushroom pizzetta - and then an absolutely appalling main course - pork belly, beans and greens. The pork belly was a great clarting lump (huge and mainly underdone fat) with its crackling not crackling at all. The beans were utterly tasteless. And the greens had been cooked within an inch of their lives, unpleasantly bitter, and not a hint of the advertised garlic. I cook a lot and I know what is badly prepared food. In fact, this whole dish was ill-conceived - tasteless, dry, a culinary failure. Of course the staff are utterly sweet and charming - it's ever been thus. But that's no good if the food is poor. We paid a hefty bill for what ended up being a scandalous disappointment. Oh - and by the way, we did talk to the staff about our dissatisfaction. But what's the point, when all they're empowered to do is say sorry over and over again but never to actually DO SOMETHING about it. Management take note. Perhaps you just don't care? So should you go? That's simply a matter of whether you're prepared to take the risk. But don't say you haven't been warned! It may just be that Oxford is such an easy franchise that the owners don't have to really pay attention to customer comments. Certainly they shouldn't bother to reply to this review. We'd rather you spent those moments improving your offering!

Good quality food and wine with attentive service. Little bit noisy when full due to it being all glass and tables slightly close together

This is an exceptional restaurant and if you’re in Oxford, you must visit! We came to celebrate a birthday and we had a wonderful time. Every dish was full of flavour and fresh. I look forward to coming back when I’m next in Oxford!

Visited for the first time today for a belated anniversary lunch . Absolutely amazing. Lovely relaxed atmosphere, great service from Hannah , Thankyou. Food outstanding, couldn’t ask for anything better. Such a wonderful place, well worth a visit .

Birthday dinner with my other half. I said on booking it was a birthday but hadn’t planned anything- it was just intended as a retreat after shopping. Setting in the greenhouse was lovely. Service was impeccable and timely. Food was soooo good. We were both impressed with all courses. At the end not having ordered desert a bowl of home made chocolate ice cream arrived with a candle - a really nice touch. Thanks to the chefs and front of house team for such an awesome early evening experience.

A birthday lunch could not have been a happier occasion - beautiful room, wonderful food, excellent wine (and beer) and super service. A truly 5 star occasion.

Very pleasant evening. Lovely staff offering excellent service of food that was extremely good (if not outstanding), complimented with very good choice of wine. A lively ambience within this busy and historic venue. Being glass, it reflected sound and was quite a cacophony with the chatter from the tables although it didn’t particularly detract from enjoyment of our evening. Would we go again? This is the place to go when you’re looking for a cozy and romantic place to eat. They welcomed me and my partner with a big smile and the whole experience was so atmospheric. Even though the prices were a bit high for me, the food was a positive surprise for my tastebuds.

The food overall was a real disappointment to both of us. I ordered the fish special for the day, when it arrived it was under seasoned and bland, the leeks it came with were still watery, and made the scallop sauce even more tasteless. My wife ordered the hake that came with some black-eyed peas, that again had not been seasoned at all. The portion sizes were tiny so we both left feeling hungry. When we complained I was expecting some sort of apology or olive branch, I certainly was not expecting to see service charge added to the bill. It is a real pity as the building and atmosphere of the place was nice.

Oh dear…after 2 dishes taken back to the kitchen in a group of 8 people…Always awkward ..! Over cooked chicken dish & totally chard ribeye steak medium dishes ..came back chicken edible but steak full of fat plus side orders of fries full of old cooking fat and unedible …Not the service you want plus over charged for side dishes we didn’t have..Very smoke and mirrors restaurant tbh…We won’t be booking again…!! Btw these comments won’t make a difference to the bigger picture but hopefully will make it’s way to the head chef….!

The last time I came to Gee's - a number of years ago - I didn't get to eat my dinner. We had had lunch somewhere else and it didn't agree with me - between ordering my food and it arriving, I started to feel very unwell and had to go outside and never came back in. So, I was very much looking forward to picking up where I had left off last time and wasn't disappointed. The dining room is pretty special, particularly when it gets dark and the atmospheric lighting comes into its own. The food was very pleasant and the service was good. I don't know when we'll be back in Oxford, but I would happily come here again.

Not sure what happened to Gees. Use to leave wanting to return and always had nice experiences there, but I l just had one of the worst meals ever especially as a birthday lunch. Starter was some shrivelled up tasteless artichokes far smaller than those I saw on other tables as I was leaving. There was actually no taste to it. It didn’t even taste bad because there was actually no taste at all. The main I had came with a large pat of butter jammed with bacon that never melted and no lemon wedge. Bacon and butter as a cold lump anyone? Lukewarm to cold temperature fish it seems was the reason. The service was nonexistent with no one asking about the meal at all. Very unlikely to return though it’s a shame as the restaurant itself has quite a nice ambience and architecture.

We have always loved dining at Gees and decided to hire it as a private venue for our wedding earlier on this month and have to say that the whole experience was absolutely fantastic. The whole evening felt effortless and we know this only happens because of the incredible hard work going on out of sight to make it so. Courtney, Sam and the team were absolutely flawless and we could not have wished for the evening to have gone any differently. The one comment that keeps getting mentioned by our guests again and again is just how amazing the staff were. I don’t think anyone's glass was ever empty and everyone really appreciated the friendliness and attention to detail of everyone working that evening (and generally, the exceptional hospitality). Overall the food, drink and service was just absolutely perfect.

We had several very pleasant lunches in their delightful garden which is utterly relaxing and beautiful. The food is extremely good but what makes it special are the staff. Always friendly, helpful and accommodating - I can’t praise them enough and you won’t find better service anywhere!! Also very good value for money. Highly recommended!

Very disappointed with the food. Gone there on a Sunday for the advertised Sunday Roasts but none available. Had a burger that was very dry and not unctuous with lovely things as you expect a burger to be nowadays. Onions,too many and raw one slice of tomato and a measly slice of cheese. Very overpriced. Nice place though and nice people.

This was a special occasion (wedding anniversary) with family, and needed special treatment. We received that, in abundance. From a warm and gracious meeting at the front desk we were put in the care of Jorge. This is probably the best waiter I have encountered, anywhere, any time. Sharp, intelligent, witty, knowledgeable, and self-effacing with a wicked grin. He was able to respond instantly to all questions about each and every dish, and he ensured we all had a good time. He even turned out to be an expert photographer, using our iPhones. The food and drink were wonderful. My lamb cutlets were succulent and unrivalled in my own experience of lamb cutlets in many countries. The starter sardines were perfectly crisp and tasty, delicately served with subtle garnishing. One of our party had fish of the day which was superb. And much more besides: prosciutto pizzetta, avocado vinaigrettes, chocolate nemesis, Eton mess... all delicious and served with appropriate garnish and embellishment. A great occasion.

This place is in a very pretty building and had been recommended to us because of the glasshouse setting. Unfortunately the food was a disappointment. The schnitzel is a particularly strange dish. When we mentioned this, the waitress agreed that they’d had similar feedback from other diners. Our guest found it almost inedible and left more than half of it. The peppercorn sauce for the steak was lacklustre and bland. The burger was basic pub standard, at twice the price. We found the food to be overpriced for the quality and not at all as good as we’d anticipated. The service was fair. A nice setting, with potential to do much better.
